While waiting for the summer rains to pass, I take a refuge to the inconspicuous park off bul. Vasil Levski. In the middle of that quiet and lush park stood an attractive domed pavilion that holds the entombed Prince Alexander I of Bulgaria (1857 - 1893), the first head of state of modern Bulgaria. In three years I live in Sofia, I lost count on many times I pass this bridge. I only know that in the old day this bridge is the eastern entrance gate towards the old city.

Today, as I (finally) decided to sketch it, I looked for the story behinds this bridge.

Turns out this Eagles’ Bridge [Orlov Most], designed in 1891 by Czech architect Václav Prošek, was one of the first monolithic bridges built in Sofia after the 1878’s Bulgaria Liberation from the Ottoman Empire. The stone bridge flanked by four bronze eagles atop four granite columns was seen to mark the eastern entrance to the city and the start of a new era. The chosen site marked the place where Sofianites welcomed back the figures from the Bulgarian National Freedom Movement in 1878 who have been sent in exile to Ottoman jails in Diarbekir, and the eagles were seen as a symbol of freedom. The beautiful wrought-iron ornaments and railings of the bridge are made in the famous Viennese Company of Rudolf Wagner.
Wow…
I’m glad I decided to sketch it… I learned something new today and it’s not just another bridge anymore. (at Eagles’ Bridge, Sofia)
