its really hard to express my thoughts on the dynamic of esteban and ash but ouhh. they make me crazy. theyre such good mirrors of each other.

TLDR: Ash NEEDS someone weaker than her to keep her company. When victor stands up to her, she needs a replacement. / Esteban NEEDS someone to tell him what to do. When he can’t be in the safe arms of his family anymore, he takes the first hand offered to him.

like obviously 100% ash is just going to use esteban to get what she wants and as soon as she gets it he is not going to be in the picture anymore. they both know that. esteban goes along with her anyways mostly out of fear i suppose but i think also just out of a perceived lack of other options. which is the same reason ash sought out zopilote, and the same reason esteban ended up staying with shuriki even after her true colors showed. GRGRRGHHHH.

i also think its soooo fun that when they team up properly its the point of no return for both of them. ash froze victor and carla forsakes her for it and ash is once again alone. esteban runs from his punishment, abandoning his family, and is once again alone. so they have this really bizarre camaraderie.

ash doesnt have to pretend like she isnt going to ditch him once she has the power she wants, because esteban would follow regardless. esteban doesnt have to pretend he hasnt done wrong because ash doesnt care and even encourages him to get Worse and take “revenge”. they validate each other in the WORST way because they really just dont care as long as they arent alone. UGH!!!!!

and while its really obvious esteban hates being alone- i think the same is really true for ash. she does seem genuinely torn up that carla doesnt want to go with her, and that she missed out on her childhood. shes legitimately upset when zopilote dies, goes out of her way to bring esteban along even though he actively impedes her effectiveness in battle. even before takaína, before he poses ANY kind of threat whatsoever. plus her song one and only. she believes that being alone is the only way to prove youre the strongest, and not get hurt anymore. but shes lonely!!!!

Our Story as LGBTQ Ugandan Refugees

We are LGBTQ Ugandans who fled our homeland, Uganda, because of the severe homophobia from both the government and the people. Some of us were at risk of being killed, others faced arrest. We each ran to different countries to save our lives. I fled to Kenya, where I met fellow LGBTQ individuals who had also escaped.

In Kenya, we were placed in the Kakuma Refugee Camp by UNHCR officials. However, life there was extremely difficult. Just like in Uganda, the camp was full of homophobic refugees. We faced constant attacks and discrimination. It was nearly impossible to access basic needs because the Kenyan government was not supportive, and even some UNHCR staff members showed homophobic attitudes.

On December 19th, 2023, the Kenyan government announced that it would no longer provide support, documentation, or protection to LGBTQ asylum seekers. We were told we were not welcome in Kenya anymore.

With no options left, many of us decided to flee to South Sudan, as it was the closest country. Upon arrival, we were taken to Gorom Refugee Settlement Camp with the help of UNHCR. We’ve now been living there for a year and a half. However, the UN told us they could no longer provide basic support and were instead trying to relocate us to safer countries. The United States was identified as a possible destination, and our resettlement process was progressing well.

Unfortunately, when Donald Trump returned to office, everything changed. Our process was halted and placed on hold. This has left us in a dangerous and uncertain situation once again.

The South Sudanese government has now stated that we are no longer welcome in Gorom Refugee Camp. Society here rejects us, and UNHCR says they have no other option but to remove us. Eight days ago, we had a meeting with both government officials and UNHCR. Devastatingly, they gave us a 10-day deadline to evacuate the camp. A government official made this announcement, and it left many of us in deep despair.

We pleaded with them, explaining why we cannot be separated or live individually due to the dangers we face. Our situation was so painful that even a UNHCR representative cried during the meeting—but it changed nothing.

UNHCR explained that they had tried everything but that Trump’s immigration policies were the reason our resettlement process was stopped.

The government has now warned that if we do not leave the camp by the end of the 10 days, we will be imprisoned. Our cases will be canceled, and we will be taken to court to explain why we are in South Sudan, despite our sexual orientation being criminalized here.

We used to write emails to organizations and allies for help, but we were warned to stop because we wouldn’t receive support and could face more problems.

We are now left with no option. We are in our final day and have no funds to leave. We fear for our lives and do not know where to turn next.
