"Oh, honestly," Numair grumbled under his breath as he made notes from a scroll he was reading. Whoever had written it apparently liked to be obtuse on purpose because the mage couldn't make heads or tails of what he was saying until he read each paragraph multiple times. It was giving him a headache, and he had a meeting.
Headaches always made meetings so much more tedious.
As chief mage, one of his duties was testing the pages for magic and then teaching them the basics of how to use their Gifts. He didn't mind the task at all, as watching new mages learn how to hone and control their talents was always interesting, but there were always those who resisted his training and lessons and figured they could do well on their own. Numair was certain he hadn't been so obstinate as a child, but then, he wasn't willing to write his mother and ask.
When a knock came on the door, he put his scrolls away and went to open it himself, stretching his back as he went. He needed to petition Jon for a more comfortable chair for his office.
"Hello," he said, smiling down at the young woman in his doorway. "Do come in, won't you?" According to Daine, some of the pages thought he was scary, so he tried his best to show them the sillier parts of his personality to offset that.
He waved the girl into the chair on the other side of his desk and then sat down in his own chair. "Well," Numair said. "What can I do for you?"
Asha had the Gift, in much the same way that people had appendixes. Magic did run in her family. Her mother had a knack for scrying, and her brother Nathan showed particular talent— something he liked to remind Asha of constantly when they were younger. And it wasn’t as if Asha had anything against it. She wasn’t afraid of magic, like some people were, and of course she was impressed by the way other people could use the Gift for all sorts of useful things.
But that was other people. Asha just wasn’t good with magic. Her family kept several teachers around, to teach the gifted children of the household, and Asha had learned to dread her tutoring sessions with them. She had to exert far more effort than her relatives for the simplest spells. When it came to Seeing, she only got the vaguest hints and images, and that’s when she ended up seeing anything at all. Her attempts at healing were just as likely to make the injury worse, and her shields did exactly nothing.
Her Gift was so minuscule, so irrelevant, that she had hoped the Duke would just decide it was best not to teach her at all. But no, like all the other pages with the Gift, Asha would have to learn how to use it.
The girl tried not to drag her feet as she was escorted to the office of the chief mage, tried not to slouch her shoulders or let her annoyance show. Maybe he would see, upon meeting her, how pointless it was. He would realize how utterly untalented Asha was, and he would tell the Duke, and Asha wouldn’t have to take any more magic classes for the rest of her life.
"Please." Asha whispered, hoping with all her heart that the gods would hear her. And then, after an uncertain glance to the servant who had escorted her this far, Asha knocked on the door to the chief mage’s office.

etcorvis:
It was only then that he realized he had been gaping, snapping his mouth closed with an apologetic smile.  Truthfully, he hadn’t ever thought on such things.  Crows did not think about the fates of other animals except for when they directly interacted with them.  Hawks, snakes, grubs could all be very interesting, but Nawat knew this was not the reason this human mage decided to speculate on such things. Nawat  supposed that now as a human, he might be freer  to wonder on such things as well.
"No, it is fine. It was interesting, even. I had not  thought about the animals that used to live in the  shells before, is all. Perhaps we could find some more of shells on the beach? I don’t think they would have  the animal inside anymore, but they might help you speculate further?”
Numair smiled at him, pleased that Nawat didn't seem to shy away from Numair's inability to control himself where learned was concerned. He could imagine that there were a great many confusing things that Nawat had to learn as a human now, and he wouldn't have wanted to make things harder for him.
"By all means," Numair said. "At the very least, it would be interesting to see if there's a way to find out what the toxin is made of. It's amazing how nature already has all of these defenses and weapons that humans struggle for centuries to perfect. And their simply born that way. Created that way. Amazing."

This is why it’s a compliment when people say “it looks like you’re just sitting there!” because that’s how it should look.  Your aids should be nearly invisible -it means you’re a quiet but effective rider.  That’s why the muggles are duped into thinking it’s ‘easy’.
(via longwhitecadillac)
…Riding a horse isn’t what it looks like: it isn’t a person sitting in a saddle telling the horse what to do by yanking on the reins. Real riding is a lot like ballroom dancing, or maybe figure skating in pairs. It’s a relationship.
