Today I will write about song Under the water by Aurora. Aurora is a Norwegian singer of the indie genre that began to be known worldwide in the middle of 2015.

I know this song for more than six months and have always heard it when I was on the bus on my way to college or focused on other things like work, so I had never really paid attention to the lyrics. Now that I'm on vacation from my college classes I am able to fully exercise one of my favorite hobbies that is to listen to music and reflect on them. A few days ago I was listening to one of my playlists when this song completely took my attention.

This song’s lyrics are very subjective, so as to allow multiple interpretations, so I'll leave mine here. The song’s speaker begins by describing a place called "under water" and in this description he makes it very clear that it is a bad and dangerous place. Then there is a very important questioning "Then why do we jump in?". Here the speaker gives two important information: the first is that the people who are "under the water" went there for own will, they did not fall nor were pushed, they are there because they jumped with their own legs; and the second is that he is also "under water."

Continuing we find more questions and some clues that help us to better understand the situation. The souls that went "under the water" are souls that have lost control of something and they are there looking for something. The speaker asks himself " Where did they fall?", If we put together this two clues with the last two lines of the first stanza ("Under the water there is no one watching, Under the water we are alone ") we will realize that this place called "under water" is not a common place where everyone jumps, but is a particular place, as if each person had his own place "under the water".

So far the speaker has a pessimistic discourse, saying that people go "under water", a dangerous and lethal place, which leads us to think that these people are walking towards death themselves. But everything changes drastically in the chorus, the soft sound of the synthesizer that seemed to simulate something like water waves is replaced by strong synchronized beats, which reminds me very much of a ritual, accompanied by extremely optimistic phrases. And then the key phrase appears: " Wash away the sin ".

We have the custom of using the word "sin" only in religious contexts, but this song is not a religious song. In my viewpoint this is a song that brings as the main theme the transformation, using as analogy the baptism ritual of Protestantism. Baptism is a ritual belonging to the Protestant religion and symbolizes a transformation in people. This ritual is done between pre-adolescence and adolescence and its greatest significance is to witness to the church and the world the Christian faith of the one who is being baptized. The process of baptism is very simple: a pastor prays for the person, submerges that person into the water for a few seconds and then raises it. It is believed that the moment the person is submerged the "old self" of the person dies in the waters and there is born a "new self in Christ". In the biblical context this "old self" represents a sinful soul who had no commitment to follow principles defined as right and the "new self" symbolizes someone determined to follow the footsteps of Christ.

Considering the fact that the Christian religion represents almost half of the Norwegian population, I believe that here Aurora used the symbolism of baptism and sin as a metaphor to bring a message: "Learn from your mistakes and forget them." All these souls plunged into the water were seeking for something, and that something is redemption, not in a religious context, but in our daily life. How many times we continually blame ourselves for our mistakes instead of learning from them? How many time did we not doing things because of them? How many times did we not smile because of them? Do we not live our lives because of them? Here Aurora says it will not be easy, the process of learning from mistakes is a complicated transformation process. It requires you to go inside yourself, a dangerous and uncomfortable place for most of us, so that you can "wash away your sin" - which in this context represents freedom yourself from your mistake. And so you can emerge and leave this place, so your heart will dream again and your lungs will breathe again. So in this context emerge symbolizes a new beginning, as expressed in the phrase " It's where it begins ". A beginning that brings confidence, because your feet will not fail, and that there will be help, because arms will not let you fall.

The process can be painful, but it's worth learning with your mistakes and starting over again, rather than living a life struggling daily with them in vain.

Hoje falarei da música Under the water da cantora Aurora. Aurora é uma cantora norueguesa do gênero indie que começou a ganhar destaque mundial nos meados de 2015.

Já conheço esta música a mais de seis meses e sempre a ouvi quando estava no ônibus a caminho da faculdade ou focada em outras coisas como trabalhos, então eu nunca tinha realmente prestado atenção na letra da música. Agora que estou de férias das minhas aulas na faculdade estou podendo exercer plenamente um dos meus hobbys favoritos que é escutar músicas e refletir sobre elas. Há alguns dias estava ouvindo uma das minhas playlists quando esta música tomou completamente a minha atenção.

A letra dessa música é bem subjetiva, de modo a permitir múltiplas interpretações, então vou deixar aqui a minha. O eu lírico da música começa descrevendo um lugar denominado “sob a água” e nesta descrição ele deixa bem claro que é um lugar ruim e perigoso. Então mais adiante há um questionamento muito importante “Então porque nós saltamos?”. Aqui o eu lírico nos dá duas informações importantes: a primeira é que as pessoas que estão “sob a água” estão lá por vontade própria, elas não caíram nem foram empurradas, estão ali porque saltaram com suas próprias pernas; e a segunda é que ele também está “sob a água”.

Prosseguindo encontramos mais questionamentos e algumas pistas que nos ajudam a entender melhor a situação. As almas que caíram “sob a água” são almas que perderam o controle de algo e estão ali procurando alguma coisa. O eu lírico se questiona “Onde é que elas caem?”, se juntarmos essa informação com as últimas duas linhas da primeira estrofe (“Sob a água não há ninguém nos vendo, Sob a água estamos sozinhos”) perceberemos que este local denominado “sob a água” não é um local comum onde todos pulam, mas que é um local particular, como se cada pessoa tivesse seu próprio lugar “sob a água”.

Até o momento o eu lírico trouxe um discurso pessimista, falando que as pessoas vão “sob a água”, um lugar perigoso e letal, o que nos leva a pensar que estas pessoas estão caminhando para a própria morte. Mas tudo muda drasticamente no refrão, o som suave do sintetizador que parecia simular algo como ondas é substituído por fortes batidas sincronizadas, que me lembram muito algo como um ritual, acompanhado de frases extremamente otimistas. E então a frase chave aparece: “Lave o pecado”.

Temos o costume de usar a palavra “pecado” apenas em contextos religiosos, mas esta música não é uma música religiosa. Ao meu ver esta é uma música que traz como tema principal a transformação, usando como analogia o ritual de batismo do protestantismo. O batismo é um ritual pertencente à religião protestante e simboliza uma transformação nas pessoas. Esse ritual é feito entre a pré-adolescência e a adolescência e seu maior significado é testemunhar perante à igreja e ao mundo a fé cristã daquele que está sendo batizado. O processo do batismo é bem simples: um pastor faz uma oração pela pessoa, a submerge de costas na água por poucos segundos e então a levanta. Acredita-se que no momento em que a pessoa é submergida o “velho eu” da pessoa morre nas águas e ali nasce um “novo eu em cristo”. No contexto bíblico esse “velho eu” representa uma alma pecaminosa e que não tinha compromisso em seguir princípios denominados como certos e o “novo eu” simboliza alguém determinado a seguir os passos de cristo.

Considerando o fato de que a religião cristã representa praticamente metade da população norueguesa, creio que aqui Aurora utilizou a simbologia do batismo e do pecado como uma metáfora para trazer uma mensagem: “Aprenda com seus erros e esqueça-os”. Todas essas almas mergulharam na água buscando algo, e esse algo é a redenção, não num contexto religioso, mas no nosso dia a dia. Quantas vezes não ficamos nos martirizando pelos nossos erros em vez de aprender com eles? Deixamos de fazer coisas por causa deles? Deixamos de sorrir por causa deles? Deixamos de viver por causa deles? Aqui Aurora diz que não será fácil, o processo de aprender com o erro é um processo de transformação complicado. Ele exige que você vá sozinho para dentro de si, um lugar perigoso e desconfortável para a maioria de nós, para que assim você possa “lavar o seu pecado” – que nesse contexto representa libertar-se de seu erro. E assim você poderá emergir e sair deste local, assim seu coração voltará a sonhar e seus pulmões voltarão a respirar. De modo que nesse contexto emergir simboliza um novo começo, como é expresso na frase “É assim que começa”. Um começo que traz confiança, pois seus pés não falharão, e que haverá ajuda, pois braços não lhe deixarão cair.

O processo pode ser dolorido, mas vale muito mais a pena aprender com seus erros e recomeçar do que viver uma vida lutando diariamente com eles em vão.

I think one of the saddest things is when two people really get to know each other: their secrets, their fears, their favorite things, what they love, what they hate, literally everything, and then they go back to being strangers.
