that was what filled your mind every night when you closed your eyes and drifted off to dreamland

your mind was overflowing with the fading memories of him and it consumed you fervently every waking time you tried to make sense of his blurry face

you wish your photographic memory didn’t suck so bad

he was vanishing, day by day, and you were going crazy

you have to see him again

you set your mind in this new quest of figuring out who the hell was that crazy hybrid that saved your even crazier self that went out alone at night

thankfully, your job was remote, so every day after your shift ended you dived deep into google pages trying to find some answers

you spent your waking hours researching about canine hybrids, absorbing any and all content about it

you found that dog hybrids were the most common types and had dark brown eyes and fur of the same color as ordinary dogs, especially the breeds they descend from

wolf hybrids had blue eyes and usually mixed-colored fur with brown, grayish and yellow, but depending on the rarity of the specimen they could have solid-colored fur too 

also, only well-off people are able to maintain wolf hybrids due to their demanding care and appetite, so it wouldn’t be likely to see a wolf hybrid on the streets by himself

and last, but not least, the dire wolf hybrids, long extinct, that were said to have yellow eyes, dark gray and white fur and were very much different from the wolf ones

while wolf hybrids tend to eat only meat, the dire wolf appetite is broader, so they consumed everything, just like a human, but in larger quantities

scientist believed that dire wolf hybrids would gather in packs, just like the wolves

but they soon discovered that, due to their unstable genes, they could not be close to one another without a fight, specially males, so they had to live in solitude

and one incident leading to the other only confirmed that those hybrids were too dangerous to be let loose in society

so they canceled the project and dire wolf hybrids only became whispers of a long-forgotten time in history books

that was not the case anymore

you met one dire wolf hybrid, you are sure of what you saw

and you know that you won’t rest until you find him again

so after exhausting your google sources you decided to roam around town

you couldn’t ask people in town if they had seen, by any chance, a dire wolf hybrid

you had to work more on the sly side

you started hanging out more after work hours, just passing by the stores and seeing if you somehow would spot him inside

maybe he lives nearby?

it’s been over two weeks now since your first encounter, but nothing yet

you were feeling hopeless, you couldn’t believe that your search for your savior was becoming fruitless

that was until you heard people talking around about a well-known cafe

it was located on the outskirts of town and they had some pets up for adoption

if they had regular pets, they might know one thing or two about hybrids, right?

it was your best shot at the moment, so you decided to pay it a visit on a Saturday morning

since you were new in the city, you didn’t know how to get there, so you had to ask for directions and got a little bit lost, but you finally reached the place

the cafe was quite cute, the animals had a special place for them to eat and rest, but most of the time they would hang around with the customers

they had all sorts of pets available, and even though they were all really adorable, that was not your focus today

you ordered a cat-themed hot cocoa and a bunny bun just to mingle and have a seat

looking around and observing the staff, you quickly noticed the manager

maybe you could talk with him and ask if he knows something about hybrid adoption

and maybe you could take your research a little bit further

you were able to stall your departure by playing with the pets, reading the menu over and over again, until you saw an opportunity to strike a conversation with the manager

he was extremely friendly and after a short small talk, you got straight to the point

“do you have different pets? asides from dogs and cats”

“yeah, we’ve got ferrets, bunnies, foxes, and even a quokka, he’s really cute” the manager smiled “Chan takes care of all of them”

“but like… do you have more exotic pets, maybe?”

“what are you trying to say, sorry I can’t quite follow” he let out an awkward chuckle

“i’m wondering if you know about a place for hybrid adoption” you almost whispered

“oh, no… sorry, but we don’t deal with hybrids as pets. You’re new around here, aren’t you?” you nodded “yeah, I figured”

he grabbed a mug to dry with a cloth

“you see, this area is known for hybrid equality, we are not like other places that sell or trade hybrids as human companions” 

he placed the now dry mug on the rack and grabbed another one, still talking

“I mean, they are like companions to us, but not like pets, if you know what I mean. More like one of us, but better enhanced by science”

you both laughed and you were happy to know that hybrids were treated properly here

“you don’t seem the type to look for a hybrid to own” he commented

“and I’m not, I’m totally against it, but I was actually searching for a hybrid… long story short, I owe him big time and I was trying to make up to him somehow, but I guess I’ll never find him again”

“well, that’s bad, sorry to hear about it, but don’t lose faith, this is not a huge area, maybe your paths will cross again one day”

“I truly hope so” you sighed

“but if you’re interested in regular pets, I can have you take a look at the ones available for adoption” the manager wiggled an eyebrow and you smiled

“yeah, maybe another time, I’m still setting in”

“no problem, feel free to come by whenever you want”

you were returning to grab your belongings at the table when a white cat zoomed in your direction

trying to quickly move out of the way of the animal, you ran to your left, hitting a hard surface

“gosh…” you sighed due to the fright and noticed that you were feeling fingers grabbing your arm

you looked up and saw blonde hair, then blue eyes that bulged when looking at your face

the hand swiftly left your body and the guy stepped back

you were looking for him for what it seemed like endless days

but damn, you weren’t expecting to meet him like this

who would have thought that he was working as a staff member of the famous pet cafe?!

you wouldn’t, otherwise it would be your first place to go to

“excuse me” he said dipping his head when he noticed you deeply staring at his blue eyes

you were sure they were brown that night, and they changed to yellow very briefly

he let out an annoyed huff and you realized you were right in front the of the passage to the animals area

and you were probably stopping him from doing his work

“sorry, sorry” you moved to the side and he walked by without even acknowledging you anymore

you are especially fond of the small fennec fox, that only comes to your lap when it wants to take a nap, and the ferret that likes to hide inside your notebook backpack

the cafe sells treats you can give the animals, so you are always trying to feed them too, but those two are just content with being around your presence

and dare Chan try prying them away when it’s time to put them back in their habitats

they cause a scene every time, and Chan used to be really annoyed by it, but now he only rolls his eyes before carefully taking them in his arms

yes, the fennec fox has run away many times, forcing Chan to chase after it in the cafe

and also yes, the ferret has screeched and pretended to faint many many times when Chan takes him from your hands (because he won’t touch your belongings)

you laugh, amused by their antics, and a few times it has worked because Chan lets them be for a little longer before coming back to collect them

but today was different… you had another visitor by your table, and this time it was the quokka

it stole the lettuce from your sandwich and started munching on the leaf before you could even notice

“Hannie, no” Chan said and ran to the table, but the small quokka jumped in your lap and hid under your arm

“so cute” you whispered looking at the bright boba eyes staring back at you, its cheeks filled with lettuce, before plopping away to God knows where

“they always come to you, huh” Chan mentioned, a little bit annoyed, but you didn’t mind

this was the first proper interaction between the two of you

“animals can sense when a person is good, no?” you smiled and Chan scoffed

“I guess it’s true cause I don’t think you would’ve risk yourself to rescue a bad person” before he could say anything, you were speaking again

“which, by the way, thank you… a lot” you looked at him “I can only imagine the terrible things that would have happened to me if you didn’t save me that night, so thank you”

since he seemed to be froze in place, maybe shocked by your words, you decided to seize the opportunity to continue talking to him, mouth running faster than your brain

“I spent a lot of days trying to find you again, trying to somehow pay you back for your good deed, and I’m glad I finally found you, even though I’m not sure what more I could do to show I’m really thankful”

“I’ve been coming here often in hopes of becoming acquainted with you enough for you to open up and maybe become friends, but I guess that’s not how you roll” you let out a snort

“I say I would know that because I’ve also spent a loooot of time researching.. well… you…” you moved your hand in his direction “as a hybrid, you know?” you whispered, looking around to see if anyone was listening

“I see how much you struggle with the pets sometimes because of me, and I can see that my presence makes you a little annoyed, you are in your workplace after all, and I understand, I would be too if the roles were reversed” you smiled to assure him

“You alright?” you asked Hyunjin while you were walking down the street, taking in the cool night breeze. Although you were the one feeling sick at the huge birthday party his family planned for him, he was the one acting weird now.

“Uhm” he muttered.

“Do you wanna go back? I can stay here by myself” you suggested, but Hyunjin just shook his head no.

“Are you sure? You were having so much fun there talking with everyone, especially your friends from school”

“So you saw that?” he inquired.

“I did” you nodded.

“And you’re okay with it?”

“Yeah, you looked really cute being so talkative, I’ve never seen you chatting like this” you answered laughing.

“That wasn’t just chatting” he muttered again.

“What?” you asked, confused.

“Nothing”

“Jinnie” you called his attention. “What is going on?”

“Nothing” he shook his head, but you weren’t convinced.

“Did someone say something bad about you?” silence fell between you, but you waited until he spoke again.

“My high school crush was hitting on me” he explained looking up. Before you could even let your brain process his words, Hyunjin was whining.

“I told her I’m not interested, why can’t she let me go? It's been ages since I confessed, she rejected me, what does she want with me now? I’ve got you! What else could I wish for? Ah, honestly…” he was like a four-year-old throwing a fit, stomping his feet and all. You tried holding back your giggles, but it was hard.

“Jagi” he whined again seeing you laughing at him.

“Oh baby, c’mon, cut her some slack. She’s now realizing she made a huge mistake. I mean, look at you, who wouldn’t want to snatch you away? I know I would” you giggled again.

“You already did” he crossed his arms unamused.

“Yeah I did, didn’t I?” you smiled wide and hugged him tight, forcing him to uncross his arms and wrap them around you. “Want me to stay like this with you until your party ends?”

“That’d be nice” he smiled a little.

“I can even give you some kisses to show them you’re taken” you wiggled your eyebrow in a funny way. Hyunjin smirked and you melted a little. You were so in love with him.

“And how will you kiss me?”

“Like this” you pulled him to you, brushing your lips over his, but dodging and kissing the corner of his mouth. “Like this too” you kissed his chin. “And like this” you kissed his cheek.

“Jagi” Hyunjin pouted, hugging you tighter as a warning to stop provoking. You smiled and nibbled at his inviting lower lip, finaling giving in and kissing him like you hadn’t seen each other in months.

“Better now?”

“Mhmm” he hummed, searching your lips for a quick peck.

“Let’s go back?” your suggestion made him smirk again.

“Eager to kiss me in front of everyone?” you knew he was teasing you, but you played this game better than him, so you just nodded, biting your lips before replying.

“And other things too when everyone’s gone” his blushing cheeks and shy smile was all you needed to know you won again.

“Babe” you called from the kitchen, staring at the empty shelf in your fridge where your dinner was supposed to be.

“Yeah?” Changbin replied from the living room where he was working on his laptop.

“Did you, by any chance, eat my leftovers?” you heard him shuffling before showing up in the room.

“No, I only ate what was in the green tupperware” he replied looking inside the fridge too.

“Those were my leftovers”

“Really?!” Changbin scratched his head. “I’m sorry darling, I had no idea! Was that your dinner tonight?” you nodded.

“I was looking forward to eating it, I’m starving!”

“It was good, though, not gonna lie, but seriously, that was so little. It couldn't even fill one third of my stomach” 

“That's because you have a black hole instead of a stomach” you laughed trying to hide your pain.

“I'm sorry, baby” Changbin hugged you. “Go watch tv or something and I’ll fix you dinner” he kissed the top of your head.

“You’ll order in, right?” you checked just to make sure he wouldn't actually try cooking for you.

“Yes, your favorite, don’t worry”

When you start feeling your body get colder, you open your eyes and sigh. Chan isn't there in bed by your side. He usually wraps himself around you like a human comforter and you don't even feel the need to use blankets, his body warmth being enough for you to sleep soundly. But it sucks when he gets up first and leaves you exposed to the coldness of the room.

"Channie" you whine, but it isn't loud enough for him to hear, you realize after he doesn't show up like he always does, grinning from ear to ear and asking if you slept well.

You decide to get up and drag yourself to where he is, not wanting to be apart from his presence any longer, so you wrap yourself in the blanket he uses and goes on a mission to find Chan.

Lucky for you, the first place you decide to check is the bathroom, and ta-da, there he is in all his nakedness glory staring at his reflection on the mirror above the sink.

You wanted to enjoy the view a bit more, but his glare at himself makes you worry. He's probably having a hard time because things aren't easy lately. Chan has been getting a lot of unnecessary comments and you wish you could stop them from reaching him somehow, but that's out of your hands.

But you know you can support him whenever times like this come, so you wrap yourself around him, pulling the blanket too, and pepper his back with tiny kisses. Chan jumps a little from the surprise, but relaxes while holding your arms that are circling his waist and chest.

"Mhm" he hums and you feel the vibration on his chest "Morning to you too" his voice is so sexy, especially after waking up. "Slept well?"

"Uhmm" you answer him, moving your kisses to his nape and then finally the side of his neck. Chan lets out a small laugh saying that it was tickling him. You smile at his reflection, holding him tighter against your body, basking in his warmth and safe presence. You both stay like this, in silence, for quite some time, until you finally speak, voice almost like a whisper.

"Let's do it today" Chan's face drops hearing your proposition, but you squeeze him and speak again, more assertively. "C'mon, I know you can do it".

"Do we really…?"

"Yep" you nod your head and stare at him through the mirror. Chan whines a little, complaining about it being stupid, but he knows there's nothing he can do or say to make you change your mind, so after mustering up some courage, he takes a deep breath and stares at himself again, this time with a much more softer expression on his face.

"I am a valuable person. My emotions are valid. My intrusive thoughts or other people's opinions don't define who I am or what I'm worth. I deserve to be happy. I deserve good things. I appreciate my dedication and hard work towards my job, but I also deserve to relax. I am at peace with myself" Chan said calmly, breathing slowly between each sentence, and for his awesome work you reward him with a kiss on his cheek.

"Ready for round two?" you ask, lazily running your fingers on his abs. Chan takes a deep breath and closes his eyes for a moment, opening them once he starts exhaling.

"I am grateful for my body. I accept myself as I am today. I am choosing to do kind things for myself. I am learning to be comfortable in my own skin. I will only welcome positive thoughts about my body today. It's okay for me to love myself, and today I will love myself." Chan continues. "And today I am also grateful for my nose. I like my nose, even though I can't properly breathe with it, but it's my nose and I appreciate it and we'll have an amazing day together today" Chan's sentence makes you laugh a little. "Wow, well done, Channie" he says to his own reflection and gives it a thumbs up while smiling.

You melt a little at the sight, and kiss his shoulders. Chan turns his head to you, pecking you on the lips as a small thank you for supporting him. You know how hard it is for him to accept himself sometimes, so you came up with this idea to hype him up before starting his day. At first you would say whatever positive thought came to your mind that would show your love and affection for him, and Chan would repeat. After a few months he started feeling more confident and began talking to himself, and you couldn't be happier at his personal growth.

"Great job, love. I'm really proud of you" you also decide to speak your mind while looking him in the eyes. "Never forget that your very existence makes the world a better place and that I love you a lot, alright?" you smile, letting Chan kiss you again.

Honestly, you were feeling like shit. It wasn’t just a bad day, it was a bad week and probably a bad month too. It was hard trying to recall the last time you actually had fun or felt good about yourself. You felt yourself spiraling into a dark place with every minute that passed by, not knowing how to fight back your thoughts.

It was even harder to keep yourself composed when you arrived home and found Jisung wrapped up in your blanket, eyes shining and cheeks puffed from munching on popcorn while watching Howl’s Moving Castle for the umpteenth time. This was his comfort zone, and you realized he was yours.

“Whoah, what happened?” you suddenly couldn’t see anymore due to your tears, and you curse yourself for crumbling down so easily, but you were already holding back for too long for your body to handle. You only felt Jisung’s arms around you, taking you to the couch and wrapping you both in the blanket while he laid down so you could lay with him. You grabbed his shirt and entangled your legs like he was your life-saver.

“Help me disappear, I can’t take it anymore” you hiccuped and cried even harder. Jisung just held you even tighter, making it impossible for you to even move your face from his chest to breathe better.

“If you disappear I’ll come after you, I can’t live in a place where you’re not in. There’s no me without you, so I promise I’ll do my best to help you through this. I love you, you’re strong and amazing. I know you can handle whatever it is that is giving you a hard time, you just need to recharge a little, hm?” he kissed your temple. “So take your time, darling, I’m right here with you.” his presence and words were enough for you to see a faint glimpse of light.

moving in from another state was tiresome and you had worked nonstop since the beginning of the week

you knew it wasn’t recommended to go out so late at night, but you wanted to know a little bit better of the house’s whereabouts

you’d just walk around the block and go back, you didn’t need to go too far for now

at night the city looked completely different, and you understood why some people told you to stay in

it looked like an abandoned movie set

there wasn’t a single soul around

you sighed, thinking it’d be wiser to just walk down the main street and return instead of going around the block

so you began walking, doing your best to breathe in the night cold air to loosen up

it didn’t take long for you to reach the main street, and it was also almost dead

it was hard to believe that it’s so quiet around when you know this place is hectic once the sun is up

you just decided to walk a little bit further, maybe until the next bus stop

and so you did, looking at the closed stores and their big bright signs

you passed by the alley right after the closed bakery and you got chills

even though it was dark, you saw three suspicious silhouettes there

oh no, oh no...

your heart beat increased and you wanted to run away as fast as possible

but something inside your head said you were being too afraid, too irrational

they’re probably friends hanging out, they won’t do you any harm if you pretend you didn’t see them

but the thing is… they saw you

and they wanted your attention

you felt goosebumps rising on your skin upon hearing footsteps behind you

before you could even think of an escape route, a hand covered your mouth and a strong arm enlaced your waist

your body was dragged back to the alley and harshly hit the floor

when facing a dangerous situation the nervous system releases some specific hormones that result in changes all over the body

people call it the fight or flight response

as the name explains it, you either fight the danger or flight from it

and since you lost your chance to run away, you’ll have to fight

and so you did

throwing punches aimlessly, kicking and biting anyone who dared touch you

but it just wasn’t enough

three versus one wasn’t a fair fight to begin with

that was until he came

your hybrid savior

with a few powerful punches and kicks he was able to do more harm than you, even if you had fought ‘till dawn

he was fast, strong, precise and aggressive

and when he grabbed one of the guys by the neck and turned to look at you and commanded you to run, your body promptly obeyed

and so you ran away in fear, heart pounding inside your ribcage

you ran until your legs felt heavy and your blood was boiling through your veins, even though you were chilled to the bones

you couldn’t even breathe properly, it seemed oxygen was hurting your lungs in every breath

but that didn’t make you stop

what made you stop was the thought of him

that crazy hybrid who jumped out of nowhere to defend you

you didn’t even know who he was or what he actually looked like

you just saw his glowing yellowish eyes in the middle of all that darkness

and his angry voice ringing in your ears forcing you to run for your life

but now thinking about him facing those men all by himself was filling your heart with guilt

you couldn’t leave him alone

he probably had an owner who was worried about him

and if he gets caught by the police, he’ll get arrested

it isn’t fair that he’ll be punished for hurting humans because of you

you, a random stranger that shouldn’t have been walking alone so late at night

the guilt eating your heart made you turn back on your track and run again until you reached the dead-end street

the sound of your loud heartbeats was echoing in your ears

you never ran like this in your life, you felt like passing out at any moment

but your own problems seemed stupid when you saw him on the floor

motionless

you would have screamed in panic if only you had the strength to do so

but you just looked around scanning the street to see if the demons who attacked you and him were still out there

and when you saw no one, you checked on him

he was breathing, but there were some ugly bruises on his face and arms

there were probably more on his body, and he was probably bleeding too, but you weren’t sure since he was wearing black clothes

as you propped him up a bit on your lap, his hoodie uncovered his hair

the bleached hair made his huge grey ears stand out

and as soon as you connected the dots and recognized what kind of hybrid he was, you panicked

he was a freaking dire wolf hybrid!

dire wolves were extinct ten thousand years ago, and scientists somehow were able to not only de-extinct the wolf but also create hybrids from its DNA

turns out people found out that prehistoric wolves are too wild and dangerous to be domesticated

so they stopped producing dire wolf hybrids and killed the ones they had created

but that was over fifty years ago, you only heard about it at school and you didn’t pay much attention to it

but how come a dire wolf hybrid was passed out in your arms right now?!

as if hearing your thoughts, the hybrid snapped his eyes open, and took a large intake of air

his eyes fluttered from yellowish to a really dark brown in a fraction of second

your heart was pounding again inside your ribcage, and the hybrid turned his head quickly at you

you’d be lying if you said you weren’t scared for yourself at the moment

but before you could have any reaction, the hybrid quickly jumped from your arms and ran away without looking back

and that was what you also did

your legs muscles were exhausted from too much running

you were about to give in and fall on the sidewalk

but you got yourself together until you reached home

you locked yourself in your small apartment, closing the blinds and trying your best to keep quiet

you were scared, nervous, tired and, most of all, confused

you didn’t have enough strength to do anything else but throwing yourself on your bed

and so you laid there, staring at the ceiling of your dark room, trying to recall with as many details as possible what the heck has happened tonight

there you were, barefoot, pacing back and forth on the warm floor of your tiny one bedroom apartment. the hours seemed to go by so slowly that you even questioned if time was actually passing. to say you were restless was the very least at this point, but you couldn't really calm down, not when you've been waiting for this moment for far too long for your liking. you sighed looking at the phone that was being held with a tight grip of your hand.

nothing.

you sighed again closing your eyes, trying to have relaxing thoughts to see if your heartbeat would steady a little bit. it didn't last long though, cause you just couldn't concentrate on anything besides him. his gorgeous face, his sparkling eyes, his cute smile, his soft hair, his inebriating smell, his enthralling presence…

the beeping sound of your door's code being typed made you turn your head to the door so fast you almost got dizzy.

and there he has, one hand on the doorknob and a shy sideway smile that knocked the air out of your lungs.

you stared silently at each other for a few seconds, your brain still not fully comprehending that he was indeed in front of you after all those painful months waiting to see him again.

"you’re back” you smiled, barely containing the tears that soon flooded your eyes.

“sorry it took me so long” he whispered coming inside and closing the door.

“don't worry, you’re worth waiting for” you said before propelling yourself into his arms for a tight hug. he was back. Hyunjin was finally back.
