literally my second tumblr post ever but I love spree (the movie) and I NEED to rant about it, I’ve had this rant in my notes app for over a month although I have edited it a lot right now and I also haven’t watched it in a month but I watched it like 5 times in a row 🙏 please tell me if I get like facts wrong!!
THIS CONTAINS SPOILERS FOR THE MOVIE SO WATCH OUT 🙏
— SO I’ve seen a LOT of people talk about how “It’s not realistic” it isn’t supposed to be completely realistic, it looks and “seems” like it is set in our world but if you actually look closer it also doesn’t seem to be; you can tell from the stream comments and the reactions people have to the deaths and even with what Kurt himself says. In the start of the movie Kurt says something about no one should be able to tell what he is doing is real after Bobby says “fake news” about the first murder.
Later on in the movie when Bobby dies, the comments in the stream all say how fake it looks and how it is a prank, which might actually mean that they have pulled pranks like this before which Kurt could have planned to help him get away with it. And for quite a bit of time after Bobby dies people keep asking where he is and when he is going to pop back out again.
There is also the whole social media aspect of the movie, in this world it seems like EVERYONE is on social media and that it is a huge aspect of their lives, much bigger than it is for us. Which could explain how and why Kurt is the way he is and why he has such a need for validation and views on social media. How important social media is to this world becomes more and more apparent throughout the movie, such as the how there were a lot of videos of the police chase after the taco truck scene leading to the scene where Kurt talks about how homeless people basically don’t exist because they have no social media presence to the comedy club scene where like EVERYONE is live streaming what Jessie was saying on their phones.
There is also the scene where Kurt stops to get gas and there is CLEARLY blood on the car and there is a cop right next to him, there is no way that if this was our reality that the cop wouldn’t see that, Kurt was not being very conspicuous anyway. Kurt is clearly acting nervous throughout this scene, but thanks to this reality he is in, he is actually able to get away with it.
We also just have the fact that Kurt is living streaming this whole thing. I would think that at 1000 viewers let alone over 10 thousand viewers that someone would report him to the police or that he would have been caught but he wasn’t because it’s a freaking movie and it’s not supposed to be realistic.
Another thing that might be relevant to this is how much it does seem that “god” is on his side. Most of these scenarios can honestly be played off as miracles. The one scene with the taco truck which he says like “thank you god” or something along those lines which, to be fair, doesn’t really give me a lot of faith (haha get it) in this theory. He has a LOT of very lucky moments throughout the movie that could just be played off as him being lucky or just how the writing was but it’s fun to think about other theories to go along with how he could get away with all he did and no one notice.
Although Kurt is like actively losing it throughout the movie so any reference to what he says can just be from his mental state deteriorating and I could be wrong about those parts but there are still so many other reasons why this movie is very much not set in “our reality” which explains how it isn’t “realistic.”
Thank you for reading have a nice day :3
