I genuinely think Mouthwashing fandom is a good example on how real life misogyny is very wired on people brains and influenced how they engage with fictional misogyny.
You have a story about a woman being assaulted and telling a man he trusted but being dismissed because he is friends with the attacker, and people fixate on shipping her with either of those me.
You have a story about how men that downplay their male friends violence, assume neutrality is the safer option, unintentionally help create an environment that's unsafe to vulnerable people, at a risk becoming a victim themselves. And people make it about toxic yaoi.
You have a character kill herself because she didn't want birth the child of her abuser. And people make AUs where she happily keep the baby.
Misogyny isn't just "I hate this women", it's also downplaying their trauma, defending those who caused it, and reducing them to mothers or wives against their wished under this idea of what womanhood is about.
I don't think we can separate fandom misogyny from it's real world influence, not yet.
#never heard of mouthwashing but i agree#in fiction i don't take it too deep but most cannot differentiate fiction and reality#so it all just tangles up into one big mess

gamble your life away | aventurine
Bullet-point scenario of you, a fisher(wo)man meeting a merman with beautiful eyes
A/N: merman!aven popped up in my head now this is what you get btw wish my drawing skills were real :( would've been sick to draw and design him what. also here's a small warm-up, i'll possibly be taking a gap year and this is what i warm up with smh
You were one of the many lone fishermen at sea, catching schools of fish and selling them to put food on your table. To say that you were a complete amateur to the profession was not entirely true, but to call you a professional was a bit far-fetched as well. It didn't really matter how the villagers wanted to perceive you. All you wanted was a peaceful life in this small town by the ocean.
Alas, no remarkable tale carves a place into people's minds by being mediocre.
Right now, you were face-to-face with a half-man half-fish creature. A mermaid? No, perhaps a merman would be more accurate. There were no little seashells covering what seemed to be the nipples of this strange creature. And that smug grin on his face...
"Like what you see?" His voice was melodious to the ears. It would not be a surprise to anyone if he wanted to lure a human with his voice to devour all he'd like.
You turned your head away from him. An inexplicable heat was rising, pooling from your stomach and all the way up to your face. Thank goodness it was already dark. You could only hope the moonlight bathing the two of you would not make it obvious to him that you were embarrassed beyond belief right now.
The merman chuckled, a sound akin to an angel's voice, tinted with a bit of amusement. You were not sure if angels could feel emotions, but the fact that this creature was laughing meant you were caught red-handed.
"I eat a variety of things...but maybe not you. You're too cute to just sit in my stomach and digested to nothing." The merman continued, slapping his tail against the boat as if calling for attention. Your attention. "Hey, entertain me for a bit."
An angry and annoyed frown snuck its way onto your lips when you turned to him. "You think I have time to be your little jester? You've scared away all the fish! I might sell you instead." Indeed, the waters had been cleared and devoid of fish. It was unclear if this merman had eaten them before climbing onto your boat like he owned it, or he scared them away with his majestic presence. You were too focused on having no fish to catch to care at this point.
"Hm...yes, a cute little jester, all for me to keep. Let's make a deal. I'll give you all the riches you want, and you stay where I want you to; in this case, by my side. What do you say?"
He held out his right hand. Lithe fingers uncurled from a fist to a more relaxed open palm, on top of it a chip. It looked like one of the chips you frequently saw the crusty old men at the saloon use on Friday nights, drinking and gambling their money away from their wives.
To say you were not the least bit intrigued by his proposal would be a lie. You wouldn't have to go out to sea early in the morning and return late at night just for a dime or two. The woes of land mortals would not strike you down with unlimited riches in your possession.
Yet, to gamble your life and possibly freedom away; was it a risk you were willing to take?
The merman smiled as he watched you with his eyes, colourful and striking yet retaining an elegant quality. "Come on. Gamble your life away with me for a better one."
Thank you for reading!

Apparently a lot of people get dialogue punctuation wrong despite having an otherwise solid grasp of grammar, possibly because they’re used to writing essays rather than prose. I don’t wanna be the asshole who complains about writing errors and then doesn’t offer to help, so here are the basics summarized as simply as I could manage on my phone (“dialogue tag” just refers to phrases like “he said,” “she whispered,” “they asked”):
“For most dialogue, use a comma after the sentence and don’t capitalize the next word after the quotation mark,” she said.
“But what if you’re using a question mark rather than a period?” they asked.
“When using a dialogue tag, you never capitalize the word after the quotation mark unless it’s a proper noun!” she snapped.
“When breaking up a single sentence with a dialogue tag,” she said, “use commas.”
“This is a single sentence,” she said. “Now, this is a second stand-alone sentence, so there’s no comma after ‘she said.’”
“There’s no dialogue tag after this sentence, so end it with a period rather than a comma.” She frowned, suddenly concerned that the entire post was as unasked for as it was sanctimonious.

I hope western leftists know that standing for a free Palestine is not the end of decolonization. I've seen far too many white leftists who proudly stand for freeing Palestine which is good but then get nervous and apprehensive at the idea of decolonizing the very land they are on. Norway will recognize Palestine but actively tear down Sámi liberation. Liberation for one people means it for us all. If you support Palestinian liberation but deny it for the Indigenous people of the land you're on then you didn't stand for Palestinians or any of us to begin with.

I've been vocal about my support for Palestine on my main blog, but I wanted to reblog this here too so no pro-terrori$ts interact with me
Fuck Israel and fuck everyone who still wants to pretend this is confusing or complicated. Is it really that hard to point out the "bad people" in a scenario where a multi-billion dollar military apparatus is handcuffing and killing children and medical staff inside a fucking hospital?

the unseen lovers | alhaitham
prologue
Series masterlist | Word count: 749
On his days off, Alhaitham found that the silence in his home was a bit too heavy to endure alone.
He occupied the living area on his own. A pot of freshly brewed tea still piping hot sat on the coffee table, a thick book on quantum physics he was rereading for the seventh time in his right hand and the lack of noise filling his ears. That was what his usual Saturday morning would be like.
Alhaitham never knew he would grow to eventually disdain it.
Some Saturdays, his hatred was fierce enough to propel him to use other rooms. Sometimes he would read in the kitchen but not while eating a bowl of soup. He always told himself it was difficult to read while eating soup. Other times he would read in bed, only to find his eyes more prone to closing than staying open.
Perhaps that was why he found himself in the library now.
This house’s library was somewhat smaller than his late grandma’s, but it didn’t really matter. The shelves were still full of the books his grandmother would read to him — and eventually, he would read them himself when he was grown enough to do so — back when he was a wee little boy.
The light teal lounge chair in the room was his grandma’s favourite. It was never just an ordinary lounge chair; to him, it was grandma’s. Grandma’s chair. The one she sat in from when she was an energetic old lady until she was a sickly and frail one. Alhaitham did not know if he was having hallucinations, but sometimes he swore he could see her sitting there, even after her passing.
His footsteps were light and nimble on the wooden floors. He approached the chair, feeling the soft carpet beneath his feet as he sat down. His body leaned back; he was relaxed. A soft smile played on his lips as he basked in the glorious morning light seeping through his window.
The silence in his home may have been deafening, but right now, he was at peace and content.
— ᯓᡣ𐭩 —
Alhaitham’s eyes fluttered open, his eyelashes that were previously resting peacefully on his face now more energetic than before. He had fallen asleep. The grandfather clock’s needles on his right showed him the time; 1:43 pm.
While he was cradled in the sweet arms of slumber, his left hand had landed atop a thick, hard-cover book on the small table beside his grandma’s chair. His widened eyes scanned the title, how did he not see this book when he came in? He prided himself on being observant regarding things he cared about, which is why he felt this was a bit bizarre.
‘The Star I Aim to Reach’ was written in big, clunky letters on the cover. The design was relatively simple. There were small drawings of stars and planets surrounding the title in white with a black background. Simple it may be, yet it was enough to capture his interest.
Alhaitham flipped the cover carefully after putting the book onto his lap. The words that greeted him were the ones he least expected.
‘Grandma’s Favourite Book’ was written on the very first page with black marker. Beneath it was a message written with a green pen. Neither his eyes nor his mind could deceive him; this was grandma’s handwriting.
Alhaitham’s eyes immediately wanted to read the passage in green. Green was the colour his grandma would use when she wanted to highlight important things to him, as it was the ‘colour of my beloved grandchild’s eyes’, as she always said.
The passage read:
‘My beloved grandchild, Alhaitham.
If you are reading this passage, then I am happier than a man who won the lottery. This is my final wish for you that I could not convey when I was alive. Forgive me, you were too young back then. It would have been inappropriate to entrust this to you when all you wanted to do was read and learn.
Read this book and find the girl whose entire world lies behind the curtains. Find the girl who works tirelessly to ensure others would smile, and befriend her. Should you want to go beyond the boundaries of friendship, I shall not reject her; and if you do not find her suitable to even be a friend, I shall not reject you.
Many kisses,
Grandma’
Alhaitham shut the book close. What in the world was his grandma talking about?
Thank you for reading!
