For years I asked, pleaded for a chance to own my work. Instead I was given an opportunity to sign back up to Big Machine Records and ‘earn’ one album back at a time, one for every new one I turned in. I walked away because I knew once I signed that contract, Scott Borchetta would sell the label, thereby selling me and my future. I had to make the excruciating choice to leave behind my past. Music I wrote on my bedroom floor and videos I dreamed up and paid for from the money I earned playing in bars, then clubs, then arenas, then stadiums. 

Some fun facts about today’s news: I learned about Scooter Braun’s purchase of my masters as it was announced to the world. All I could think about was the incessant, manipulative bullying I’ve received at his hands for years. 

Like when Kim Kardashian orchestrated an illegally recorded snippet of a phone call to be leaked and then Scooter got his two clients together to bully me online about it. (See photo) Or when his client, Kanye West, organized a revenge porn music video which strips my body naked. Now Scooter has stripped me of my life’s work, that I wasn’t given an opportunity to buy. Essentially, my musical legacy is about to lie in the hands of someone who tried to dismantle it.

This is my worst case scenario. This is what happens when you sign a deal at fifteen to someone for whom the term ‘loyalty’ is clearly just a contractual concept. And when that man says ‘Music has value’, he means its value is beholden to men who had no part in creating it. 

When I left my masters in Scott’s hands, I made peace with the fact that eventually he would sell them. Never in my worst nightmares did I imagine the buyer would be Scooter. Any time Scott Borchetta has heard the words ‘Scooter Braun’ escape my lips, it was when I was either crying or trying not to. He knew what he was doing; they both did. Controlling a woman who didn’t want to be associated with them. In perpetuity. That means forever. 

Thankfully, I am now signed to a label that believes I should own anything I create. Thankfully, I left my past in Scott’s hands and not my future. And hopefully, young artists or kids with musical dreams will read this and learn about how to better protect themselves in a negotiation. You deserve to own the art you make.

I will always be proud of my past work. But for a healthier option, Lover will be out August 23.

I’m writing this post about the upcoming midterm elections on November 6th, in which I’ll be voting in the state of Tennessee. In the past I’ve been reluctant to publicly voice my political opinions, but due to several events in my life and in the world in the past two years, I feel very differently about that now.  I always have and always will cast my vote based on which candidate will protect and fight for the human rights I believe we all deserve in this country. I believe in the fight for LGBTQ rights, and that any form of discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender is WRONG. I believe that the systemic racism we still see in this country towards people of color is terrifying, sickening and prevalent.

I cannot vote for someone who will not be willing to fight for dignity for ALL Americans, no matter their skin color, gender or who they love.  Running for Senate in the state of Tennessee is a woman named Marsha Blackburn. As much as I have in the past and would like to continue voting for women in office, I cannot support Marsha Blackburn. Her voting record in Congress appalls and terrifies me. She voted against equal pay for women. She voted against the Reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act, which attempts to protect women from domestic violence, stalking, and date rape. She believes businesses have a right to refuse service to gay couples. She also believes they should not have the right to marry. These are not MY Tennessee values. I will be voting for Phil Bredesen for Senate and Jim Cooper for House of Representatives.  Please, please educate yourself on the candidates running in your state and vote based on who most closely represents your values. For a lot of us, we may never find a candidate or party with whom we agree 100% on every issue, but we have to vote anyway.

So many intelligent, thoughtful, self-possessed people have turned 18 in the past two years and now have the right and privilege to make their vote count. But first you need to register, which is quick and easy to do. October 9th is the LAST DAY to register to vote in the state of TN. Go to vote.org and you can find all the info. Happy Voting! 🗳😃🌈

Nashville, last night was the first time I got to headline that stadium. Every second of the show meant so much to me, and I’m so grateful to Tim McGraw and Faith Hill for coming out to sing ‘Tim McGraw’ with me. I first came to this city in search of a record deal when I was 11! I’m just as enamored by being here now all these years later. Thanks for an unforgettable night.

Long Post Ahead- A Thank You to Taylor <3

So here it goes, this in no way is a sympathy post, nor am I seeking attention from her. If I could meet @taylorswift, I would tell her how much she means to me. I would thank her for getting me out of a rough place. I would thank her for making me smile during all of the times that i thought I couldn’t, giving me a purpose to keep going, for all of the times that I put her music on to calm my anxiety during a panic attack. I would tell her about all of the times she made me happy when I was depressed, and thought I had no reason to be happy. I would thank her for being there for me, when I had nobody, when all of my friends left me during my darkest times. I would thank her for being my friend. For telling me that no matter what people think of you, it doesn’t define you. I needed that; one of the songs that I constantly have on repeat is clean. A song that has so much meaning, to a lot of people, not just me; to me, clean is me saying that I can finally breathe after a year long rain storm. All of my problems are gone, and I can finally move on, and learn to love myself. I just want to hug you and tell you thank you, for just being there, letting me know through your music that you love me no matter what I’m going through. While, she can’t be with me physically, her music videos and funny compilations always help. Taylor has always been a huge part of my life; I don’t want to make her cry, but she basically saved me when I thought I couldn’t save myself. Your music is the reason I strive in life; your happiness and smile, is the reason I’m still smiling. For the first time in months, I can actually smile. Your concert is something for me to look forward to; I bought tickets to your show after years of not being able to afford them, and I couldn’t be more excited to rock out with you, and for once be able to feel like myself and actually loose myself for once. Taylor, I know you get a lot of similar posts, from young girls like me in hopes to get noticed by you just to meet you. For me, it would just mean a lot if you read my post; I’m incredibly thankful for all you have done for me, and I don’t know if there is any other way of saying thank you. Thank You, Taylor you truly are a special human being, and I’m so grateful that I get to call you my role model. Thank you, for everything. I Love You T!!!!! Also 48 days until I can finally see you, and sing along with you. I’m taking my dad with me, who also happens to love you just as much I do, and I can’t wait for us to have fun and forget about our problems for a while. You seem to bring us closer together. Hellooo! I just wanted to tell you a little bit about why I’m extra excited for our girl TayTays concert on AUGUST 4TH!! It’s only 18 DAYS AWAY and I’m highkey losing my mind but YEAH ok so story time!

I actually moved to Toronto on my own when I was 17 to attend University. It was super terrifying but as per usual, when in doubt - listen to Taylor’s music! It helped me get through this new stage in my life and for that, I’m extremely grateful. But, what helped me get through this even more was my best friend, Kirsten. I met her my first day moving in, and ya know what we bonded over? TAYLOR! We would blast her music all day every day in our little residence apartment, and keep each other up to date on all things Tay.

I’ve been fortunate enough to see Taylor live a few times (all wonderful, wonderful times might I add). BUT, after meeting Kirsten and talking with her about the shows, I learned she had NEVER seen Taylor live! She never got the chance to and she has always regretted it. SO, flash forward three years later and Taylor announced the reputation stadium tour! No questions asked, we immediately bought tickets. The girl that has loved Taylor since 2006 will finally be able to see her perform LIVE ON AUGUST 4th and I am so happy to share this experience with her!

THANK YOU FOR COMING TO TORONTO, TAYLOR. You have no idea how excited we truly are to see you perform. We hope one day we can give you a big ol’ hug to thank you for bringing us together, and for helping us no matter what we’re going through with your music.
