Today I wanted to walk out of my job, so after work I took myself to the movies. I watched a movie that made me cry, and when I got out of the theater, I saw a young dad carrying his daughter on his shoulders down the street. It made me smile. Reflections on building a better me
Exercise is not optional. Mental satisfaction from completing yet another workout cannot be overstated. Physical satisfaction from feeling good and enjoying your body in clothes, the mirror, and photos cannot be overstated. Stop messing around, stop info hoarding, go exercise. And tomorrow. And the next day. And the next day. And the next day.
Looking your best depending on circumstances (ie, casual, dressy, bedtime, etc) is not optional. External confidence from taking care of your appearance top to bottom and loving what you see in the mirror is highly valuable.
You feel better when you eat better. You’re proud of yourself when you eat better.
Hobbies, hobbies, hobbies. Do you feel embarrassed when someone asks what you do all day and you can’t come up with an honest answer that doesn’t make you sound like a loser with no life? You need hobbies. Some that are outdoors, some that are indoors. Some that are taxing, some that are relaxing. You will enjoy life more, become a more well-rounded individual, and have positive ways to spend your time rather than racking up more hours on your phone. Get some hobbies. Plural.
Procrastination and laziness should disgust you. You shouldn’t be able to relate. You should strive to be above that. You like yourself better when you complete your tasks and get things done in a timely manner. You’re proud of yourself when you’re on a roll and have a productive streak. You’re impressed by productive people and no one likes a lazy bum.
Decide what you want from life and pursue it ruthlessly. Don’t take advice from people who don’t have the life you want, unless they were once on your desired path and fell off. Even then, you listen to them when they say what NOT to do (learning from their mistakes) but clearly they don’t know what TO do bc they didn’t make it to the finish line. Take “do this” advice from people who crossed the finish line and have what you want. You’ll find that the amount of input that is actually valuable to you has suddenly dwindled. Good. Less chatter in your ears.
Get yourself in order before you go around critiquing everyone else. Get YOUR face in order. Get YOUR body right. Get YOUR money up. Get YOUR style in order. Get YOUR relationship together.
Stop coming to everyone for validation like a toddler. Validate yourself. Do you like it? Okay then. Are you over it? Okay then. Stop being so weak. Stand tall, lead yourself. Stop being such a follower.
Be a good person. Help your family, lend a hand to strangers, give back, say sorry, do things for loved ones just because, show affection, work things out, watch your mouth, speak respectfully, remember that the world owes you nothing. Stop being an insufferable freak.
You can’t change anyone but yourself. Get yourself in order and be a good role model. That’s all you can do. Give people advice when they want it and then go about your business. Get yourself in order. Get yourself in order.
Outrage content is the lowest form of entertainment. Engage in things that make you happy or educate you. Doom scrolling only leads to doom. Don’t like this person? Don’t click on their articles or videos. Unfollow and block. Don’t like these people? Leave their spaces. You don’t have to be outraged every day.
Always keep your word to yourself. Make a plan, stick to the plan, always deliver. If you can’t be reliable for yourself then who can you be reliable for?

Can you please give an example of how to take a history? Love your blog.
Hello! I hope I’m not too rusty, I haven’t taken a history in a while. So, taking a history varies a lot depending on the situation, the medical problem, the age of the patient. For example, if it’s a obs/gynae problem you’ll usually want to ask about previous pregnancies, if it’s psych then you’ll probably go more into their personal life, etc.
But we usually use the same standard formula and I’ll use an easy example - lets say someone who fell over and hurt their arm.
- don’t ever forget to introduce yourself and ask their name!
- start with the presenting complaint (i.e. what’s happened to them now). With pain, I really like using the SOCRATES acronym:
Site (where)
Onset (when did it start)
Character (like is it sharp, stabbing)
Radiation (does the pain radiate anywhere)
Associated factors (any symptoms associated with the pain)
Time course
Exacerbating or relieving factors
Severity (e.g. out of 10)
So that usually gets more of the info about the pain. And with any fall it’s always important to ask about how it happened. Depending on what they say, you might need to ask more questions. Remember, it’s not just about just asking your pre-set questions, it’s also about listening to the patient and responding to their answers. For example, if they mention they got a bit dizzy before they fell, pick up on that, ask them about it.
- then we usually move on to past medical history, which is pretty self explanatory. I usually say something like, ‘do you have any other medical problems’, and then maybe prompt them with something like ‘like diabetes, or high blood pressure?’ (high blood pressure is something patients often forget they have). In this situation, you might ask if they’d broken any bones before
- I usually then ask about medication history. Remember to also check if they buy any meds over the counter, or use any herbal remedies. Oh and in girls I find they often forget their contraception is a med, so maybe check for that. In this situation, you might check if they’ve used any pain meds for their arm.
- family history. E.g. I usually ask ‘does anything run in your family, like diabetes or heart problems?’ Remember to adapt it to the situation - e.g. if this is a patient with a DVT or something, ask if they have a FH of blood clots.
- social history. This will vary a lot depending on the situation. E.g. here, you might ask how their living situation is and if they’ll have people to help them if their arm is broken. Always ask about smoking and alcohol use (be specific with these - ask how many they smoke a day, for how long. How many drinks do they have a week).
- general health review - I like to use the acronym SAWTEM:
Sleep
Appetite
Weight
Temperature (fever)
Energy levels
Mood (i.e. checking for depression, low mood)
- as well as the main facts, it’s important to also get the patients views. Something we use a lot is ICE (yes I love acronyms):
Ideas (what do THEY think is happening)
Concerns (what are they worried about - this is REALLY important to ask about and address)
Expectations (what do they hope/expect to happen now)
This is sooo important, it shows that you actually care what the patient is thinking, and helps to address their ideas and concerns. You can ask this near the end, or you can try incorporate it into the history. Again, pick up on things - e.g. they might say that they’re worried about something early on in the consultation, and instead of skipping over it you could delve into their concerns.
Another important thing to do is recognise and acknowledge their issues and feelings. This shows empathy, which is important in a doctor. It’s hard to sort of say how to do this, because it should hopefully come naturally, but yeah. Things like ‘i realise how hard this must be for you’ and ‘it’s understandable why you’re so worried’ etc. Validate their concerns.
Other tips:
- remember to look at their body language too. Do they look nervous? Sad? agitated?
- if they’re upset, give them time. Find them a tissue and some water, don’t press them to keep talking until they’re ready
- signposting. Examiners love this, and it makes more sense for the patient too. Things like ‘i’m going to ask a little bit about your lifestyle now’ etc, just so that there’s a bit more warning before you ask quite different questions
- summarise. I often do this after I’ve asked about the presenting complaint - summarise it back to the patient. This helps get it clear in your head, and also allows the patient to add stuff or correct you
- make sure you leave out the medical jargon! Even asking for their ‘past medical history’ sounds a bit wooden and they might not understand you. Use clear, normal phrases.

G's Productivity Challenge
Hello amores!
So, I've decided to start a productivity challenge.
Since I've always focused on self care along with academics, my challenge is going to be a balanced mix of both too.
Duration : 25th January'22 to 31st January'22.
(initially i'm starting with a week. I'll definitely be extending it.)
Tasks :
Meditate and manifest for 10 minutes daily.
2. Study for at least 10 hours everyday.
- I prefer doing pomodoros (50/10 with long break after 4 sessions) usually but if I'm feeling exceptionally tired or distracted I do (27/3 with long break after 8 sessions.)
- Since I have to do three major subjects everyday I like to divide my study time into three blocks; chemistry -> biology -> physics.
If you're doing this challenge feel free to use your own study techniques; whatever you're more comfortable doing and keeps you productive.
3. Do a 10-30 minutes workout daily.

4. Eat at least one healthy meal once a day.
I've been on a diet for a couple of months. Speaking from my personal experience I feel so light and since I have to sit and study the whole day it is very helpful.
Honestly healthy meals are tasty asf ngl. They make you feel 😙.
Also I like cooking for myself so I make sure to atleast make one meal a day for myself. It is a stress buster for me. ( Make sure to clean the kitchen later tho lol. )
5. Do anyone thing that makes you extremely happy daily.
- It could be listening to songs, painting, talking to your friends or family, going out for a stroll, literally anything.
Before going to bed you must reflect on your whole day and ask yourself the following questions :
1. Am I satisfied with how I spent my day today?
2. Do I feel happy in this moment?
3. Where did I waste my time, if I did? How can I stop the leakage?
4. Is there something I could've done differently to make my day better, feel happier?
5. What are my goals for the next day?
