every minute spent on planning saves you ten minutes spent on execution. short essays probably don't require that much preparation beforehand, but if you're writing something longer you should probably spend some time planning first. this is the process i go through when planning my essays, and i find it works really well!

How to Really Comprehend a Scientific Paper
**credit to my research advisor, she’s an amazing mentor and I aspire to be just like her someday :)
Read the abstract. Write down what the paper says it is going to be about.
Read the introduction. Write down what the paper says it is looking to accomplish and how.
Read the conclusion. Write down what the paper actually did accomplish.
Go through and find all the pictures, graphs, or diagrams. Write notes explaining these images to yourself.
Read the whole paper start to finish. Write a summary of the paper as though you are explaining it to a layperson, and then another summary as though you are explaining it to a colleague.
Throughout all of the above steps:
If there are words you don’t know google them and write down the definitions
If the paper defines a formula, law, variable, etc in a certain way write that down
If there are references to or recommendations of other literature write those down. After the last step if there’s anything you’re uncertain about or would like more information on look to that list for further reading

dear former “gifted” students...
1. you are allowed to pursue arts, humanities, etc. degrees if that is your passion. by doing so, you are not “wasting your gift”.
2. it’s okay to ask questions. asking questions doesn’t make you dumb, and it definitely doesn’t make you look dumb. nobody on this earth has all the answers, but everyone has questions. don’t be afraid to ask yours.
3. if you aren’t good at something immediately, don’t give up on it. mastering a skill takes practice & patience, no matter who you are. this doesn’t make you incapable or dumb.
4. on a similar note, you don’t have to always be the best. you will never be satisfied if you are always in competition with everyone around you. strive to be the best that YOU can be, regardless of what others are doing.
5. don’t strive for perfection (hint: it doesn’t exist). once again, just be the best you can be.
6. try to work on not needing constant validation. learn how to complete tasks without expecting praise for doing so, & remember that you are smart, even if you have been told so recently.
7. if you feel like you don’t know how to study now because good grades always came easily to you when you in your early years, feel free to check out my blog or other studyblrs - we constantly post study tips, study inspiration, etc. if you have a question that is specific to you, my asks and messages are always open.

hey!! i used to have a huge problem with procrastination but i would say i’m holding up pretty okay these last days and doing a good job at balancing out my days. i’m by no means perfect and still waste time every so often but i hope i can help some of you hehe.
do what gets you in a “productive“ mood 🍊
for me, it’s getting ready and putting on a fun outfit, for you it may be working out in the morning or completing some quick tasks like putting some things away etc. figure out what gets you started. this helped me a lot, especially after i laid in bed doing nothing, it’s much easier to do these kind of tasks than just start studying.
have a fun morning routine 🍊
something to look forward to. i love breakfast and listening to an audiobook. you can try to incorporate journaling, playing with a pet, listening to your fav music, doing fun makeup, … it will get way easier to get up in the morning.
maximize your space / use it in a smart way 🍊
i have a sofa bed so i make to sure it’s in the sofa state when studying, so i don’t get tempted to lay down. you could also make your bed in the morning and make a rule it’s only for sleeping. when you like to work in bed just change the layout like moving the pillows. make your brain associate studying with certain things. turning on a specific lamp, candles, certain music, idk even smth like putting your hair up. also best invention ever made are theses thingies making your books stay up (how are they called???). first of all your neck doesn’t hurt as much anymore, books take up less space and they’re also really practical for your laptop.
practice 🍊
when doing exercises you already have the answers to, try doing them without help and then correct yourself like a teacher with a red pen. i find i then know which mistakes are typical for me and remember the correct answer better.
be flexible 🍊
if you make a plan and find it doesn’t work out for you, change it. adjust your studying for subjects. i can read for 50mins but i can’t revise flashcards for that long. that may be completely different for you. i also don’t really like making a schedule because it just always seems to get interrupted. you may work fine with one. just try things out and find what works for you.
have things to look forward to 🍊
i need breaks. i like to take a midday break and watch youtube or a show and i study in 50min tacts with 10min breaks in between. i rest in the evening and do something i like. organize your days in a way that doesn’t make you burn out.
get enough sleep!!!!!!!!!!!!! 🍊
hear me out. i didn’t want to believe it. but it makes such a huge difference. i know this is (sadly) not realistic for everyone but ever since i sleep enough, i’m way happier? and motivated. i can concentrate better and in the end get more done than when i would sleep less.
revision 🍊
if you need to memorize material go through it trying to repeat it without looking. then mark the stuff you don’t know (highlight/sticky notes). if you go through your material later you will know what you really need to revise and save time.
and most importantly: be gentle to yourself. don’t overwork yourself. don’t compare yourself to others. forgive yourself when you are not “productive“. your worth is not messured by that!!! okay?

Weekly Spread
Thank god I went through all my classes and wrote down what needed to be done. It helped me out a lot the other day, and still is, with getting everything done on time, but without all the running around frantically vibes.
In other news, I actually really like how this spread turned out. It’s simple, not overcrowded, but still really pretty.
How’s everyone holding up this week?

How I Started a System (For work or for anything else):
I recently watched one of Rowena Tsai’s videos on how to set systems as a habit and it has helped me find the motivation to get back into the groove of doing my schoolwork and procrastinate a bit less. With the whole pandemic end of the world thing, I’ve definitely been unmotivated and I’m sure most of you are, too.
For school, my system is this post it note thing pictured. I have columns for:
To Do
Doing
Done
The To Do column helps me remember what I still need to do, the Doing column helps me stay focused on the task at hand so I’m not multitasking, and the Done column is there so I remember that I completed something and I’m not a failure.
You can use this system for any other tasks you need to do, not just schoolwork! And remember, it’s okay to not be motivated or start some big passion project during this. It’s a global emergency, not a vacation.
