August Spread
I’m really looking forward to the last month of true summer! I fly to London on August 31 and begin my study abroad program so there is a lot to prepare for but also a lot to enjoy until then. Anticipation is part of the journey! Here’s to fresh strawberries, Hong Kong style boba, warm nights, binge watching Star Wars, and finishing the books that have been waiting for me to come back to them all year long. 🍓

11.08.18    How are there only 2 months of 2018 left? I feel like it’s going by fast, but a little too fast… because that means I only have 2 months left to do college apps and get my grades up ew. But kinda excited too!

Ok so I promised I would make this post a few days ago and I never did so here we go!
I have a booktube channel!
It is a joint channel with me and my best buddy, Colleen ( @booksandrec and @tina-goldstn and @chilly-october-nights we have many blogs between the two of us tbh)
If you like reading and books and stupidity please check it out and hit subscribe if you like!* We are still definitely a new channel (we started it in February but have only been consistently posting for a couple months) but we plan to stay consistent and put out good content!
*Disclaimer/request: if you know me in person and ESPECIALLY if you are related to me please do not let this channel get to my parents or immediate family. They don’t know about this channel and I would prefer they didn’t for the time being. But, you know, you can follow cuz we need the subs lol

5 THINGS YOU CAN DO EVERY DAY TO BE HAPPY
1 - Brisk 20-minute walk. Studies show three 20-30 minute walks a week outperform, from a happiness perspective, test groups on anti-depressants and test groups doing both the walking and taking the anti-depressants. (Penn State / Babyak, American Psychosomatic Society)
2 - The 20-Minute Replay. Journal for 20 minutes about a positive experience you had during the day. Your mind will relive the experience as you write and relive it again when you read your journal. A tripling effect. (University of Texas, “How Do I Love Thee, Let Me Count The Words”)
3 - Commit A Random Act of Kindness. Surprise someone a coffee, hold the door open for your coworkers, send a thank you note to an old teacher. (Lyubomirsky)
4 - Meditate. Studies show meditation increases the activity in our pre-frontal cortext – the part of the brain responsible for attention and focus. (Massachusetts General Hospital)
5 - Write down 5 gratitudes. If you can be happy with simple things, it will be simple to be happy. The research here had students write down five gratitudes, events, or hassles. Those writing down gratitudes vastly outperformed the other two groups after ten weeks. (Emmons / McCullough)

types of study breaks for every situation
if you realize you’ve been studying for hours: grab a snack to refuel your body and watch a sitcom to refuel your brain. then back to the books.
if you’re feeling stressed out: take some deep breaths, text your friends, maybe stare at a wall for a few minutes. gather yourself.
if you can’t seem to focus: get moving and get outside. take out the garbage, check your mail box, maybe walk your dog. just get moving and get fresh air. it’ll help bring you back.
if there’s something else going on in your life and you can’t get it off your mind: write down what’s going through your head, sort of like a diary entry. it’ll help you work things out.
if you’re just mentally and physically exhausted: set a timer for 25-30 minutes and take a nap. any longer and you’ll hit REM and you’ll wake up feeling just as tired. once you wake up, get some caffeine in you.
if the material is boring as hell: find another way to study. see if there’s a crash course video online about it or draw out what you’re trying to learn in diagrams and pictures to make it fun.
if people around you won’t shut up: listen to some music. soundtrack and classical music is always good because they won’t absorb you as much as music with lyrics. white noise (like ocean waves, rain sounds, etc.) also works.
if you only half understand a concept: call/message a friend who’s not in the class and try to teach the material to them. this will help you mentally work through the material and will help you remember it as well.

4/26/18: An Update of Sorts
So I have been insanely inactive on this blog this entire semester so I thought I would explain why and give anyone who cares an update on what’s happening.
So in my major we have a semester long internship and that has been the bulk of my semester. I did my internship at a local retirement home in the wellness department and it was… pretty boring. I was working on reorganizing the library computer system and I also helped with a few events. It was ok, but I know I probably could’ve gotten a better experience elsewhere. But, hey, I got free lunches and stuff so it was chill.
Other than my internship I literally only had four classes and two were online. They were all really chill classes so I spent a lot of time doing nothing because there wasn’t much to do. It’s been a really relaxing semester and after three semesters of pure hell I was really happy to have that. So, I kind of went missing because there wasn’t anything to post about and I didn’t feel like focusing too much on school honestly.
I finished my internship up yesterday and I am graduating on May 13th and I’m nervous as hell!
During this very quiet semester I decided to take up writing again. I have always dreamed of being a writer and I am very seriously working on a duology. It still feels like a stupid dream, but I’m really trying to pursue it at the moment.
That being said: As many of you may know (or not, I don’t know) I was applying to grad school for occupational therapy last semester. I had two interviews this semester and ultimately,,, only got into one of seven schools. I got waitlisted by two others, but it was quite the disappointment. However, since approaching graduation and rediscovering my dream of writing, I’ve started considering taking at least a year off before going to grad school, if I go at all.
I’ve struggled with depression for many years and at the moment I’m the happiest I’ve been probably since I was 13. And I attribute a lot of that to graduating and moving out of my parents’ house and getting a cat (yes I’m getting a cat, not yet though, it’s a long story). And overall writing again. Being in the position I always thought I would be in since I was a kid is a dream come true and I want to keep living that.
I’m writing this when I am because tonight I told my mom that I am hoping to take a year off. She was wayyyyyy more chill about it than I expected and I’m really happy about it. So hopefully come August I will be living in an apartment with my cat and writing and working a shit job like I always dreamed!
So, besides updating you all on this situation, I also wanted to explain the future of this blog. Obviously I will not be studying much in the near future so this blog will continue to be less active but will hopefully not be inactive. In the summer I tend to bullet journal a lot more and I want to use my bujo for writing stuff so I will likely be posting things about that on here. Also I might try to learn a language now that I have more time!
If for some reason you like this blog and want to find me elsewhere I have a pretty inconsistently run booklr called @boooksandcats and I just started a writeblr that I’m hoping to post on more called @writingtomorrow! Check them out if you’re interested!
But overall, yes I disappeared, but I had good reason and I’m hoping to come back in a sense soonish!
TL;DR: I didn’t post this semester cuz I had an internship and not much else. I’m graduating soon and hopefully taking a year off to write, but I’ll be on this blog sometimes!

How I prepare study plans
Preparing study plans is one of my favourite ways of planning my work.
They allow me to know the exact amount of work I have to do and the exact amount of time it will take meyou to get everything done.
I suppose we all have a personal way of doing a study plan, so here’s an easy, step-by-step post about how I prepare a study plan !
1. Take 10 pages out of your study material
Whether your study material is a book or notes you took in class, choose 10 pages out of it.
Do not pick the easiest ones ! This would ruin the whole experience.
2. Start studying and time yourself
Start studying those 10 pages, and time yourself while doing it.
Study normally, like you would do on any particular day of studying : you can highlight passages, annotate your notes/textbook, draw a mind-map, make a short flashcard,… Anything work-related that you would normally do.
3. Check the time it took and don’t worry if it seems like a lot
At the end of the 10 pages, stop the timer and check the time it took you to go through your work. Write that result down.
Do not feel like rubbish if it took you a lot of time to get through 10 pages : you might have made flashcards or mind-maps, or wrote some things down… There are subjects that might be tricky to study (like anatomy or other horrible things that med students have to go through - they are the bravest after law students ;-) ). There are subjects you’ll hate and those will take an awful lot of time… In short, some things will be hard and it’s better to know exactly how much time they take than just roughly estimate it… and get it all wrong !
For instance, it takes me an hour to get through 10 pages of Family law. This is because I highlight my notes and my statute book, I add post-its to my statute book and I quiz myself with the little exercises that the teacher gave us in class. All this takes a lot of time.
4. Repeat steps 1 to 3
And do this for every subject you are studying during the semester.
5. Estimate the time it will take to study the entire material for each subject
After having gone through 10 pages for every subject, divide each of your study material by 10. It will give you the amount of time (in hours, days or even weeks) that you need to cover all the material for every subject.
For instance, I have 279 pages to study to master Family law. Since I need one hour to study 10 pages of it, I’ll need 27.9 hours to get through all of it. One again, write the result down for every subject.
6. Prepare your pens and write your chapters down !
This is when things get funnier !
Take back your study material and write the headings down. By headings, I mean the subdivisions of your material. Depending on the subject you’re studying, it could be “parts”, “chapters”, “sections”,… Whatever the name, write that down and do not forget to note how many pages are included in each headings.
7. You can make step 6 funnier but do not lose too much time !
When preparing your study plan, you can unleash your creativity and end up with really good-looking things.
A really cute study plan can motivate you to study.
You can also use bullet points and check them when you’ve finished a heading. This is what I do and let me tell you something : it’s extremely rewarding to check headings. You feel accopmlished, serious and hard-working !
However do not lose too much time working on your study plan. It is there to help you going through the real work you need to do, and should not distract you too much from all the stuff that needs to be done in order to be ready for finals.
8. Prepare a weekly planner
If you already have a weekly planner, use it.If you do not, prepare one. There are cute ones available here on Tumblr (check @emmastudies : her printables are awesome).
Use it to write down your classes, your commuting time, your meals, the time it takes to wash your hair… everything you have to do in a week. This is what I call “Group 1”.
Do not forget to plan some “mental-health” time = activities that allow you to forget about college : sport, reading, meeting up with friends, shopping, family time,… This is what I call “Group 2”.
Group 1 activities are compulsory : you cannot cancel them and have to build your schedule around them.
Group 2 activities are not compulsory : you can move them around in your schedule.
9. With that weekly planner, draw a plan of action !
Using your weekly planner, check how many free hours you have. By free hours I mean the periods of time when you have absolutely nothing to do : no classes, no commuting, no essay writing, no laundry to wash.
Compare this result with the time you need to get through the study material of your different subjects.
Fill the blanks in your schedule with the headings of your different subjects. For instance, every Monday, I have a three-hour free period between two classes (Family law and European and Comparative Law of Torts, just so you know - we’re getting intimate, don’t you think ?). I’m staying at uni during those three hours and usually go to the library. So, if a chapter from my Corporate law class takes three hours of studying, I will write this down on my weekly planner and plan to study this chapter during that period.
Alternate the subjects ! It is no use studying one single subject for a whole week : you’d end up studying things that were not covered in class (this is difficult). Plus, studying the same subject for a week is just boring.
10. If you end up not having enough time, cancel a “Group 2” activity
If you realize that you won’t have the time to cover everything you need to cover during a week, move a Group 2 activity (from Monday to Friday night, for instance) or cancel it(apologize to your friends of family if they were involved and agree to meet them later).
This is an extreme solution, but you might need to resort to doing it if your week is really busy with Group 1 activities. Here’s my method for a perfect study plan. I hope it will be useful.
Good luck with your studies. I’m sure you’ll all ace your exams !!

eleven little self care tips for students
Get enough sleep. Your brain needs it. Set yourself a ‘bed time’ and fall into the routine of going to bed and waking up at the same times each day.
Drink water and lots of it. Aim for 2 litres a day. This one’s easy, you can do it. Ditch the juices and carbonated beverages, just add a slice of lemon to your water if you feel like something fancy.
Allow yourself to switch off. Don’t be afraid to read books that have nothing to do with your studies. Go to the cinema. Work out. Take your mind away from your workload.
Take care of your skin. Wash your face every morning and night. Moisturise after every shower and bath. Don’t go to bed with your make-up on, no matter how tired you are.
Talk to your friends and family about something other than school. Don’t let your studies detach you from the things going on around you.
Work out. Even just once a week, or whenever you can. Go for a walk or a run, maybe just for 15 minutes. Follow along with a YouTube exercise video from the comfort of your own home or try out some yoga moves.
Make time for your hobbies. Studying is your full time job, but there’s plenty of hours left in the day. Don’t neglect the things you love.
Cook. Sometimes all we have time for is microwave noodles, but don’t fall into the habit of relying on the basics. You’ll feel the difference.
Don’t forget to laugh. Watch a hilarious film. See a comedian at a local venue. Watch funny videos on YouTube. Reminisce with friends. It’ll do you good.
Ditch the caffeine. Don’t rely on Starbucks. It’s delicious but you don’t need it. Save up all the money you’d usually spend on coffee and treat yourself to something instead.
Make your bed every morning. You’ll be grateful at the end of a long day when you can get into a cosy bed that doesn’t look like you just rolled out of it.

hottest language learning tip
write a diary
literally
just write a diary, it has helped me sooo much and i dare say it has been the most developing thing i’ve done while learning french, nothing else compares
1. you’re exposed to the language daily
2. you quickly see which words are missing from your vocabulary
3. you learn to write about the things you think about a lot
4. learning to actually think in your target language
5. having to look up words and when reading the entry back a couple of days later you can’t even remember which words you didn’t know
6. going back to the earlier entries and seeing all the mistakes and knowing how much better you’ve become
7. when you’ve been writing for a few months and your target language becomes a natural way for expressing yourself
8. when you’ve been writing for a few months and you start seeing the diary writing as a way of self-expression and stressrelief, and the language learning aspect becomes natural and secondary
9. filling out a whole book using only your target language and physically seeing how much you’ve accomplished
