Why Pets?
What makes a person want a pet and be so invested in having a furry animal? Well other than the fact that their cute, fluffy, and adorable they sure play a big role in your life! A pet whether it’s a dog, cat, bunny, or bird can give you unconditional love and help you with your stress more than anything else can. As a part of life,, we deal with a lot  of uncertainty and stress and there are days when we need a little extra love and support and a pet can provide that. Every time you are having a rough day and walk in while your pets greet you can make your day much better. For example, every time I get home from work and my dog runs up to the door it makes me happy and excited to be home because my dog is there to show me his excitement for me to be home and this makes me feel loved. Playing with your pet not only reduces stress but can actually improve your heart health! In addition to this, there has been research done on how animals can influence a child's development specifically children with autism, ADHD, and other conditions. Dogs help kids with ADHD by helping kids focus. There was a study done that kids spending a 30-minute session reading to a therapy dog tended to have better social skills and, cooperation, and tended to volunteer more. They also had fewer behavioral problems than the kids who spent their time reading to a puppet. This shows that the kids focused on the dog and the dog actually motivated them to do better. Dogs can help kids with autism because they are there as support and kids feel like they can rely on them. Also, having dogs around the house when a child has special needs can decrease their anxiety and stress because the kids can play with the dogs. Dogs love receiving attention and want to always play around so this can help a kid play around. I’m sure you have heard the saying that dogs sense their owners being sad. This is true! When a dog senses their owner being sad they don’t leave your side and they try to comfort you by cuddling up with you! There are many reasons why people choose to get pets but the most common is that their kids want a pet to play around with, people feel depression and anxiety at times so they would be fond of the idea of getting a pet for extra support or some people might get it for medical needs for their kids.

Behavior of Cats
As mentioned in the previous posts I discussed the behavior of dogs and how we can try to understand our dogs. Cats are also common pets in most homes and just like dogs, they try to communicate with us as well but in their ways. At times you can find your cat doing odd things and you just think it’s cute that they are acting that way but this can mean they’re trying to tell you something. The most important behavior to understand for cats is when they are meowing frequently or if your cat is arching its back and slowly backing up. A cat constantly meowing can signify that they are experiencing discomfort or pain and they are trying to communicate that to you. Understanding your cat is in pain can be important for their health because it could be something serious. Usually, when this occurs it would be a good idea to take your cat to the vet to make sure everything is normal. Another behavior that can be important is when you see your cat arch its back and back away this can either signify fear or aggression. Anytime you see this behavior it’s best to stop what you’re doing that is causing this fear or look around and see why your cat is in this situation. This can be helpful as pet owners so that you avoid your cat possibly attacking someone. Another behavior of cats is when they are twitching their ears back and forth which can mean that they are experiencing anxiety.  Cats are constantly curious about being this way they are constantly on the hunt and looking for things to either play with or a space to go to. Cats love to be in small closed spaces because it makes them feel secure and safe from their surrounding so you might find your cat in areas where you wouldn’t have ever imagined. Have you ever heard or felt your cat purr while being near you? I had my kitten lying on me and heard her purr and I was so confused about why she was acting this way and started to wonder if there was something wrong! After taking her to the vet for a regular checkup I asked the vet and she told me that it was because my kitten was happy and she was trying to communicate that to me! Cats purring is common but it could mean one of many things such as stress, hunger or to get attention from another cat nearby! Understanding your kitten can help you build a better bond and help your cat feel at home!

Dog Behavior
Has your dog ever done something odd and you questioned what it could mean? Well just like humans dogs try to communicate with us in different ways. Dogs do various things such as barking, growling, whining, barking, sniffing , shaking their tail or head, or even just looking at you directly. Understanding your dog's behavior can help your dog feel more at home. A dog can show that they are angry and aggressive by growling or by keeping their posture a certain way. If you pay attention to your dog and the hair on the back of their back is raised that means that they are being aggressive and can attack what they fear.  A dog can tilt their head and you might think, what does this mean? A dog tilts their head when they are curious about what they are seeing or hearing. It might be a sound that they haven't heard before and now their curious about what it could mean. They are curious about what it means.  Another behavior that dogs do often is shaking their head which could mean one of two things. Either they are shaking their head because they are relieved from tension caused by being aggressive or it could mean that that they got what they were waiting for a long time. One of the most important behaviors to understand about a dog is when they are whimpering or whining which can identify that they are feeling pain or want your attention directly on what’s scaring them or causing pain. Other behaviors such as eye contact and tail wagging can mean that they are being playful and want you to play with them or give them attention. Dogs barking can be a way of a  dog greeting but if it is constant and intense it can mean they are trying to alert you of something such as someone being close to the door trying to enter. While you may not understand your dog at all times it helps to know a few things just for you to be able to meet their needs at times. This helps you grow close together and build a better relationship with your dog. Understanding your dog can also help you train them to communicate with you better which will help your dog feel less anxiety and stress.  For example, recognizing and understanding when your dog is being aggressive can help you train your dog to not be aggressive and attack others which will help you train your dog to be friendly with others which then decrease safety concerns when around others.
