Afternoon of the dead
S1 ep3: Jobs and job training
“Wake up.” The voice said again and this time it startled Tanja awake, her reflex kicked in and she kicked whoever said it in the balls yet again. Then when Tanja pulled off her sleeping mask she realized it was soldier Seynar that she had kicked in the balls.
“Oh my god I’m so sorry! You just startled me and—” Tanja blinked her eyes until the adjusted to the daylight and she saw soldier Seynar struggling to not dopple over and hold his groin.
“Don’t worry about it kid…just change and get ready for your job training…” soldier Seynar said with a grunt which Tanja chalked up to the pain inflicted on his sensitive area.
“Job training?” Tanja stood up.
“Yes job training, after being kicked in the groin by you yesterday the other soldiers and I thought it would be a great idea to put your painful reflex to use…” Soldier Seynar told her “now go get ready and wear something you can fight in, bring a weapon if you have one.”
“Just exit the area and wait outside first.” Tanja crossed her arms and without another word soldier Seynar obliged, leaving Tanja alone to change.
When Tanja changed into a luxury purple dress and redone her makeup in purple including the lipstick, she proceeded to grab her priceless gem sword and exited the room. Soldier Seynar led Tanja to the training range and there was one other soldier waiting there, soldier Sanchez. They told her to practice her swings on a training dummy they set up and then they’d move on to punches and kicks after they finished the sword lessons. Tanja stepped forward unwillingly and unsheathed her priceless gem sword and both soldiers just stared at her with a raised eyebrow on each one.
“That’s quite the sword young lady.” Soldier Sanchez spoke.
“Yeah, daddy insisted on me having a sword to protect myself in case I needed it.” Tanja rolled her eyes, but inside she really missed her father and his over-the-top security measures.
“Why not just a regular sword?” Soldier Seynar asked.
“Because for some reason dad had it so it was made out of sapphire gems and the handle encrusted with rubies, gold, and emeralds.” Tanja explained. “I don’t even know why but I’ve always been an only child so I got all the goodies and all the gifts.”
“Alright let’s just start the sword lessons…” soldier Seynar spoke, he walked over to the training dummy and marked out the targeted spots on the dummy with red x marks. One on the head, one on the shoulder blades, and even one on the legs. The final x mark was located on the neck point, and Tanja started to stare with a raised eyebrow herself, what the hell would these lessons entail? Tanja thought, but she had a feeling she was about to find out.
“Alright the x marks point out where you should aim for, so far all we know is that those things beyond the walls of the camp are only taken down by sustained trauma to the head.” Soldier Sanchez spoke and explained, then he breathed out before saying “there could be variations though, so far there aren’t but it’s not far fetched to assume so, never rule out any possibility even the most unlikely ones, you might be surprised.”
“Now you guys sound like Izon when he’s watched too much of the walking dead…” Tanja sighed exhasperatedly.
“You mean your boyfriend with all the weapons?” Soldier Sanchez said.
“We are not together!” Tanja shouted, but then her cheeks turned as red as freshly picked tomatoes.
“Yeah sure whatever you say kid…” soldier Seynar responded.
The sword lessons went by without a hitch aside from afew notes here and there to make things perfect. A higher swing to better stance, then it was the shooting lessons, and oh god the soldiers were silently preying for death because it was almost as if they knew she couldn’t shoot shit. It was going to be a long day and Tanja could feel it, not just because of the job but all day the scent of death was bothering her nose. Decayed flesh from whatever those monsters outside of their walls were kept filling the air around the safe zone and it bothered Tanja to the point where she sprayed herself with perfume several times. The whole afternoon was spent teaching Tanja to fight with sword techniques and how to shoot anything other than snipers in virtual reality games, and Tanja discovered that she was surprisingly good at archery with a bow and shooting with a crossbow, guns were still iffy for her but it was better than nothing. Tanja was given her first assignment shortly after and it was simple enough, scout ahead and report back with visual observations. Tanja was nervous about going out alone but then she saw Izon was headed out for the scouting mission too, Tanja wouldn’t say it out loud but she felt safe with Izon by her side and he was armed to the teeth with weapons, two guns strapped to his back, two swords on either side of his waist belt, knives and daggers sheathed in the backside of his belt, and arrows in the front of his belt. Not only that but he strapped sticks of dynamite to his upper and lower thighs and to his knees and below were strapped ninja stars in the colour grey. And finally all throughout his arms were attached ammo clips in case he had to resort to firearm usage. In his hand was an archery bow and in the other one was the arrow he was going to first shoot from it.
“Is all of that really necessary Izon?” Tanja rolled her eyes.
“It is if you wanna survive the zombie apocalypse or whatever hell-of-a-plague this is.” Izon stated matter of factly.
“Oh for heaven sakes…” Tanja facepalmed.
“Careful sweetheart you’ll smudge your makeup!” Izon said jokingly.
“Sweetheart?” Tanja raised an eyebrow and blushed a little bit.
“Seriously that’s what you took from that sentence?” Izon smirked.
“You’ve never called me sweetheart before…” Tanja spoke under her breath.
“Yeah well no time like the present to start now right?”
“Oh for gods sake Izon…”
And with that the two of them set off for the mission ahead, the goal was to scout ahead and report back with visual information, and that meant reporting how many zombies were in the area. Tanja was still gagged by the scent of death lingering in the air and she was tempted to bathe herself in perfume by dumping a whole bottle out on herself but she resisted by a shred of a miracle. They kept walking for what felt like an hour but was actually only twenty minutes until they came to the checkpoint and Izon helped her into a tree before climbing up himself. Then they climbed higher and higher until they couldn’t anymore, either because of thin branches or because they were already high enough up. Izon took out a telescope and extended it enough to see what was ahead.
“Looks like a group of zombies down there, ten or fifteen” Izon said “but there’s afew more stumbling around not too far away, so maybe thirty.”
“Might turn into a horde if it isn’t dealt with” Tanja said.
“Yeah but we were only tasked with doing a scouting run, not dispatching those zombies” Izon pointed out.
“Fair point but I still think if they don’t get dealt with soon that it’ll get too big to deal with” Tanja remarked.
“Then I’ll radio back to the safe zone and explain things to them” Izon spoke as he went for his walkie talkie.
“Good, because those things are not eating me alive!” Tanja rolled her eyes and several things were clouding her mind at once, everything ranging from what those things were to wondering what could’ve been.
“I’d hate to see the queen of insults be eaten alive too” Izon joked.
“Hey!” Tanja laughed and she punched his arm.
“Let’s go dispatch those walking corpses now, you’ll need to if you have any hope of living” Izon said bluntly.
“Well fu—” Tanja started but they afew stray zombies noticed them and started trying to claw their way up, and failing.
“Might wanna upgrade that to a double fuck sweetheart!” Izon shouted as he dispatched a zombie and then another one took its place.
“Izon we have to hurry, before the rest of the forty-some walkers catch us!…” Tanja yelled and she jumped down from the tree, regretting it instantly because it made her ankle soar upon impact.
“Why would you jump down like that? Your ankle is hurt now!” Izon said as he jumped down after her with a concerned gaze.
“Yeah yeah scold me for it later! Let’s just get back and inform the soldiers!”
“Then we deal with that ankle of yours!”
“Oh come on Izon I can just walk it off!”
“Tanja there aren’t any luxury hospitals anymore so don’t be so damn stubborn!”
“Let’s just get back before I change my mind!!”
(Missy & Jenny POV)
Missy and Jenny were doing alright with their jobs so far, they weren’t failing royally so that’s something. Missy loved the peacefulness the garden gave off and she was very tentative with the plants, giving them a little extra fertilizer. It was a pleasant job over all and since the newest cook was one of her friends that saved her from the awkward introductions of others. Jenny wasn’t so lucky though so she just avoided talking to the if it was at all possible, thankfully though today it was.
Everyone has their own issues to deal with among everyone there, especially those too young and those old enough to understand. The world is a vast place where different races are possible and yes, as fictional as it sounds, impossible colors too. Among the friends though they all have issues, Missy missed her parents and they all did, they were all aware their parents likely died already since they haven’t seen their families around. Jenny wanted to go back to her sports and schooling because she had dreams of one day being a multi athletic sports professional just like her grandfather and father were. Arianna although she missed going to skateparks could turn any place into a skatepark so she made do with what she could, and she also stocked her hat up with new foods when it started getting low on her favourites. Felicia missed her frozen treats, she always would and now she might never eat the again, but she was starting to adjust to the new life so far. Tabitha wanted her boredom to stop on the days she had absolutely nothing to do whatsoever, but she didn’t really have anything but her parents to miss. Kennedy was often found reading books in her spare time to gain extra knowledge on different matters and situations so she would be well equipped to handle them in the future. All of the girls were going through with their jobs and then the evening hours soon came, Tanja and Izon had told the soldiers that brought them to the survival camp that there was a group of walkers where they were scouting and the walkers were promptly dealt with.
In the evening hours everyone was hanging out in Tanja’s sleeping quarters and the girls were snacking from things in Arianna’s hat, and they were talking about the lives they’d now have. It was all smooth sailing for now but most of the girls decided to try and make this place like home, all of them except for Tanja…
Tanja was mostly silent the whole time, just focusing on her cosmetics and makeup the entire time. She still didn’t like it here and she wasn’t sure of what she had wanted yet, she was like the oddball of the group if you wanted to put it that way. She even had an overly pricy sword made entirely out of gems of different kinds and gold, some probably thought she was spoiled and some understood her as well as they could. She still wore her luxury clothes as a small defiance against the world for taking away her childhood house, but Tanja had a sickening feeling that something was coming…
“You okay?” A guys voice said, and Tanja didn’t even have to turn around to see that it was Izon talking to her.
“Yeah,” she responded “just…thinking, I’ve got this real bad feeling in my gut that something awful is going to happen soon but I can’t shake the feeling of what…”
“I have too, honestly…some people are built for this world and others will never be, something tells me that whatever is going to come will come full force.” Izon told her, he wasn’t ever one to sugarcoat things but being blunt was just him.
“Yeah but it’s a really bad feeling, the kind so bad that it actually makes you sick…”
After those words left Tanja’s mouth Izon looked up at her and for a moment it seemed that his one facial expression would change, but it didn’t change. Izon knew whatever it was coming that it couldn’t be good…whatever disaster it was would definitely be severe. They both felt it, and Izon’s gut feeling was never wrong…
“Well whatever it is we’ll prepare, have escape protocols put in place until the last stance fails and we have to fall back.”
“But Izon, what if—”
“Tanja we won’t die in the process, besides I was born to survive a zombie apocalypse, it’s…it’s what I’ve been training for really, I guess part of me always knew it was coming…”
“If you say so Izon…”
And with that reply Tanja sighed and fell asleep in her clothes she wore that day, she was exhausted from the fight training and the fact that she and Izon had scaled a tree wasn’t helping the case at all. Izon knew she was tired so he just decided to let her sleep, but he carefully grabbed her shoulders and head and safely layed her down in her sleeping cot. Izon wasn’t all that sleepy however, his gaze lingered momentarily on Tanja before he averted his eyes and started staring at everything around him. He knew Tanja wasn’t holding onto all of her luxury things because she was one of those brats, she was doing it because now they’re all that’s left of her old life. More specifically her parents…her parents got her the red dress she always wore when she was just entering high school, and the cheap but simple and heartfelt gift her friends all chipped in to make her was the very thing she wore on stressful days, she didn’t wear it yet but he knew she would soon. Izon thought about his life before the outbreak, about the accident that claimed his parents lives when he was eleven, about the fire that killed his aunt Lucille and uncle Henry, about how everyone always thought he watched too many horror movies to be sane. Basically he watched everything about his life on fast forward in his mind and he wondered what could cause this, was it a twisted wish of sorts? Was it a bio weapon?
He couldn’t be certain but one things for sure, even Izon couldn’t have predicted the fall, Izon couldn’t predict that the dead would start walking, Izon couldn’t even predict what tomorrow would look like…
Not even the huge disaster that would one day hit the survivor camp…

Hey Zari who are all the agents there at acme? I only know afew of them…
Hello! Let me give you the rundown (under the cut because there are a lot of us)
Chief: Our head honcho. You probably know her. She runs everything. Founded ACME. Usually a hologram. The works!
Tumblr media
Agent Zari: Higher ranking agent, she's been around as long as anyone can remember. Very serious unless cracking the dumbest pun you've ever heard. She usually trains new agents and is partnered with Agent Bronson if she isn't training someone.
Tumblr media
Agent Argent: Depending on when, sometimes our agent. She's smart and analytical, if a bit of a dreamer. Everyone knows about her thing for Carmen Sandiego except her. She partnered with Zari when training and now partners with Devineaux.
Tumblr media
Agent Devineaux: Number one car wrecker, but gets the job done! Sometimes. He looks before he leaps, but if he leaps right, he leaps RIGHT. Again partnered with Zari when training and then Argent afterwards.
Tumblr media
Ivy: [OOC: We pretend she's here if it's relevant but most of the time Team Red has her LOL. Same with Zack] One of our newer agents who specializes more in mechanics (fixing the cars Devineaux wrecks or our drones or pens) than field work, but can get a job done like nobody's business if asked. She's technically partnered with Zack but might stay at base while he works in a bigger group so it's more of a formal pairing.
Tumblr media
Zack: The other newer agent who turns out to have the exact same sense of humor as Chief. They get along like a house on fire. Not to mention he's got a shockingly good brain for strategy and picks up new languages like nobody's business. He's become seriously good. Again partnered with Ivy but works in groups better.
Tumblr media
Agent Bronson*: Affectionately referred to as Jawline by me. He was Zari's partner before Devineaux and Argent came along. He doesn't talk much, but he's very competent and serious.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Agent Dobson*: Our good natured guy in the tech seat. He looks over monitoring suspects and things. He avoids the field as much as he's able to because he tends to freeze up, but you can see him on those huge operations where we need a lot of field agents because we pull like everyone. He sometimes works with Rodriquez but is usually solo.
Tumblr media
Agent Rodriguez*: Another one of our best in the field. She helps a lot with hands-on investigations, taking suspects into custody, etc. She partners with either Dobson or Sokolov depending on the work. She's very pretty 🥺
Tumblr media
Agent Morgenstern*: Another great field agent, if a bit impulsive. She loves to talk and act. I actually think her and Devineaux would get along great. Or maybe hate each other. Anyway she and Jacobson are partners.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Agent Sokolov*: I cannot for the life of me find a great picture of him. Sorry, Agent Sokolov. Unfortunately the pictures are only about to get worse. He works with Rodriguez, usually, on field stuff.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Agent Jacobson: Also can't find a good picture of her but she was on the Stockholm job. Another field agent and I have not if I'm honest met her very much so I don't have much to say. Sad. Partners with Morgenstern.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Agent Lombardi*: Obviously camera shy because THIS IS THE WORST PICTURE YET. He's got red hair if you ever see him you'll know. Especially because he likes to crack jokes all the time. He and Zack look similar almost until you hear them talk (Zack is from Boston and you can hear it. Lombardi is from Spain). He was assigned to the Mumbai job if any of you are familiar. He actually usually like flies our helicopters and stuff as backup which is why you may not see him usually.
Tumblr media
Agent Anderson: Our resident crime scene photographer. I also again can't find a good picture to save my life when she had blonde hair. She after all is usually the one taking them, not having them taken. That last picture is also her she just dyed her hair because everyone kept mistaking her for Zari from behind LOL. She usually works solo as she's usually for crime scenes, not field.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Agent Williams-Green: Another field agent I confess I have not met much. She was on the VILE HQ bust. She's partnered with Agent Silva.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Agent Silva: Williams-Green's partner. Again I can't say I've met them much but they do exist LOL.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
[OOC: *Names with an asterisk were done by Dusty from @carmensandiego-dreams-collection. Please check out this fic they did with the ACME agents it is FANTASTIC. https://www.tumblr.com/carmensandiego-dreams-collection/762099749041078272/this-is-a-test?source=share ]
And, finally (as far as I can remember meeting, there are way more who work office jobs or I've just never met), there's me, "Apprentice." I'm basically ACME's intern and I run their social media. Which is just Tumblr. yippee
Tumblr media
That's me and VILE's Intern. Who I hate sooo much. Drawn by @tiredguyswag :)

Afternoon of the dead
S1 ep2: The beginning of the end part 2
Everyone heard the tires screech outside, they watched from the windows as army soldiers came and entered through the door, rather quickly, quicker than they thought possible. The group of friends still never understood what was going on but Izon had a pretty good idea.
“Everyone get your stuff and get in the cars now! Move it this area is being evacuated!” Soldier Sanchez spoke with an authorative tone.
Nobody dared disobey, that is…except Tanja, she never wanted to leave her house. Nobody knew why but everyone always assumed it was because it was her house, the one she grew up in. Tanja looked on in disbelief, she thought this was just a gigantic prank and the military were crashing her sleepover now.
“I’m not leaving my house.” Tanja crossed her arms.
“Tanja are you really going to stand here and argue with the army right now?” Izon looked at her with a raised eyebrow.
“Yes because this is my house! And I’m not leaving until my parents come home!” Tanja shouted, she was starting to get wore down with the situation and now she was beginning to get frustrated.
“You do realize that either way the army is going to make you right?” Izon pointed out.
“Come on, you really think that this won’t blow over Izon? Seriously?.”
“Come on Tanja, if this was a prank would the army really be involved?. I also know it’s not gonna blow over in afew days.”
After Izon saying that Tanja hesitated, she knew pranks never got the military involved and she was starting to run out of options. She stood there in contemplative silence for a moment and started mulling it over, if it was a prank why would the military be there? And if it were a prank it would’ve been called off way before everyone got scared out of their wits. Tanja got nervous at the thought of leaving her house, but now seeing her friends hastily packing up their sleepover bags she knew what had to be done.
“Fine…” Tanja sighed as she went to get the necessary objects. She was still reluctant to go, but she was starting to understand…there was no winning in this situation. She never wanted to leave but no amount of arguing was going to solve it. One of the soldiers, soldier Roddes, was following her, and Tanja understandably was getting mildly uncomfortable.
“Why are you following me?.” Tanja stopped and spun around on her heel.
“Following orders kid, you’ll need protecting.” Soldier Sanchez replied, in a deadpan tone.
“Listen sir I doubt those things can climb stairs, and even if they can they’d get lost because of the mansions sheer size!”
“Still orders kid, now get your stuff”
“Why can’t we just stay?”
“Because kid your lives are at risk and everyone’s in the city as well. There’s an unknown disease going around and if you’re infected it’ll turn you into those rabid people at the end of your driveway.”
“Oh wow, I doubt that would suit makeup and expensive red dresses at all…”
After some time everyone was ready and in one of the military vans, Tanja, Izon, Melissa, and Jennifer were in one military van and Arianna, Felicia, Tabitha, and Kennedy were in the other one. Tanja still wasn’t happy about leaving her house behind and she had her arms crossed all the way there, but not even ten minutes into the ride her two girl friends had her laughing. Izon was relieved, ‘at least she wasn’t upset anymore and that’s the main thing’ Izon thought to himself. Meanwhile in the other van Arianna was munching on one of the waffles she had in her hat, her friends were still baffled by how all that food stayed in that hat while she was moving around but they avoided asking.
“Hey remember that time we accidentally glued our fourth grade teacher to his chair?!” Tabitha said through laughs.
“Yeah! He was so mad!” Kennedy laughed too.
Felicia laughed and added “he couldn’t even change his clothes for days!”
The girls spent the drive there talking and laughing the time away, reminiscing about the day and childhood memories. None of them could believe their world had been flipped upside down, no more social media, no more trips to the mall on Saturdays, no more homework assignments, it’s the little things. They took the little things for granted and now they’re gone, but the thing they missed most of all? Their parents…Tanja’s parents were on a business trip to Italy so she couldn’t really say goodbye before the phone signal cut out for good. But her other friends did, they were so afraid that they’d die they said their goodbyes to their parents after Tanja told them about the military rescuing survivors. Tanja wouldn’t say so but she was really worried about her parents, she didn’t know if they were sick with this unknown disease, she didn’t know if they were dead or alive, and she didn’t know if they knew what was going on right now…
They arrived at the military safe spot at shortly after ten o’clock and soldier Rodger told them to wait in the makeshift medical tent they set up. It was what you’d expect to see for a medical tent, the military were patrolling around so sneaking out was never an option, and the base was filled with other survivors. But the girls just did as they were told and the nurse came in, this was nurse Trinity. She was instructed to ask the girls and Izon each the routine questions that would be asked nowadays.
“Alright so have any of you been bitten?” Nurse Trinity asked them.
“No we haven’t” Izon spoke.
“Nothing could get past our friends security anyway” Kennedy added.
“So where were you all located when the military came for you?” Nurse Trinity looked down at her clipboard.
“We were at our friend Tanja’s house for a sleepover” Arianna responded.
“And what about any symptoms you may or may not have experienced?” Nurse Trinity jotted their responses down on a clipboard.
“None at all, the only symptom of anything we experienced was at school and it was extreme boredom” Jenny answered. “We all couldn’t wait for our sleepover but those plans were kind of haulted…”
“I see…” nurse Trinity wrote down the answer again. “Seeing as it took so long to get to your general area we will assess you for how fit you are tomorrow and assign you jobs”
And with that Tanja’s eyes widened like somebody said they were about to jump off a cliff into shark infested waters.
“Excuse me what?”
“Yes young lady I said jobs, everyone needs a skill to contribute and until we find one you can’t have a job to do around here” nurse Trinity began. “Not only that but we need more hands in afew departments”
“I could do anything that has wheels, I was actually studying to be a mechanic in my time at home” Arianna volunteered.
“Alright what other skills do you ladies, and young man, have?” Nurse Trinity began writing down Arianna’s response.
Each of them took their turns listing off the things they were good at, Missy was good at gardening, Jenny was good at cooking, Felicia was good at determining which plants were poison and which ones weren’t, Tabitha was surprisingly good at medical care, Kennedy was a surprisingly skilled marksman, and Izon could fashion a weapon out of anything. Nurse Trinity kept jotting these responses down until it was just Tanja to ask, but when nurse Trinity asked Tanja about her skills Tanja just said.
“I’m not really good at anything besides makeup and sketching”
“Well…any other skills that might be of use?”
“Sorry but not that I can think of, I’m not anything special like my friends are, I don’t really have any valuable skills” Tanja spoke.
Nurse Trinity went to write that response down and Tanja just so happened to be standing by the entrance of the medical tent. The soldier who hadn’t made his or her presence known before had was really gonna regret it.
“How’s the checkup goi—“ was all soldier Seynar could say before Tanja jumped and roundhouse kicked him in the balls.
“Holy shit!” Soldier Seynar grunted in pain and Tanja’s friends tried so hard to not start laughing right then and there.
“Yeah sorry about that, Tanja has a really killer kick…” Tabitha spoke in between snickers.
“Oh my god…yeah your friend might be good at fighting…” soldier Seynar grunted out.
“Yeah that’s just a nervous habit, I’m not actually a fighter…” Tanja winced.
Soldier Seynar winced before responding. “Could’ve fooled me…”
“Anyways final routine question, does anybody have any underlying conditions?” Nurse Trinity spoke.
“Except for Jenny being restless, Melissa having OCD, Tabitha having ASD, and Kennedy having ADHD there really isn’t anything of specific importance.” Arianna answered “none of us are allergic to anything though”
“Alright good, good, we’ll have your jobs sorted out for you girls by tomorrow” nurse Trinity answered as she was writing down their responses on her clipboard.
“Well that’s tomorrow’s plan ruined…” Tanja sighed under her breath before walking out of the medical tent.
Everyone just raised an eyebrow after she left, Tanja wasn’t one for jobs but for a totally different reason than everyone might think. She’s not spoiled rotten impolite, she just doesn’t know how to do a lot of jobs that aren’t about makeup or hair. Tanja started roaming around the camp and eventually stumbled on another medical tent ‘how many medical tents does this place need?’ Tanja thought to herself. Then a doctor roamed out of the tent staring at her clipboard.
“I take it you’ve already seen the nurse and been asked questions?” The doctor spoke, she had a pixie cut with a small ponytail and she didn’t look up from her clipboard.
Tanja just nodded and walked around some more, she wasn’t able to comprehend this place yet so she walked around. Then lunchtime rolled around and it was soon one o’clock, the friends chose a table in the corner and Izon chose a seat next to Tanja. Meanwhile throughout the entire lunch Tanja just picked at her mushed vegetables and mystery meat, it’s not that she was a picky eater or that she refused to eat it, she just wasn’t hungry. After lunch ended they were escorted by soldier Rodger to their assigned sleeping quarters so they could settle in. Missy decorated her room, Jenny unpacked her things that she managed to grab, Arianna hung up her skateboard helmet, Felicia made her bed, Tabitha organized her atuff by color, Tanja sat on her bed, and Izon was busy making his sleeping quarters into a bunker. Tanja took a walkie talkie from her bag and spoke into it on their channel reserved specifically for them.
“Anyone else think this place completely sucks?” Tanja sighed and leaned her head against the wall. There was hardly anything to do and she really wanted to be in school right now despite how much it sucked. Only one person picked up and it was Izon, he obviously propped up the walkie talkie since the sounds of sharpening could still be heard.
“It might suck but we’ll have to make do, just think of it this way…” Izon paused and then spoke again. “At least you didn’t die”
Tanja rolled her eyes, although he couldn’t see it. “Hooray me…”
“Look Tanja if this world ever goes back to normal you’ll get your house back and your parents…”
“How can you be so sure? They’re all the way in Italy!…”
“If Italy was hit then they’re probably at one of the designated safe zones, I’m sure they’re worried about you too.”
“Izon that’s sweet and all but atleast you know where your parents are…”
“Yeah, I can’t imagine what not knowing is like but I promise you if this place ever falls then we’ll try to trek all the way to Italy to find your parents…”
“Thanks Izon, just don’t get yourself killed alright? Other than my friends you’re the only one I’ve got…”
“Relax Tanja, I’m not going anywhere anytime soon.” Izon smirked on his end of the walkie talkie “now get some sleep, it’s going to be a long day tomorrow”
“Alright Izon, and thanks…I needed that.” Tanja spoke before she put the walkie talkie aside and changed into a sleeping gown her friends had gotten her for her sixteenth birthday. Then she grabbed a sleeping mask and put it over her eyes, she didn’t bother to wipe off her makeup. Tanja just went to sleep like that and covered up with her blanket that she had made herself out of her old baby clothes and clothes she had outgrown.
The night passed by fitfully for Tanja, she kept having nightmares about what could be and dreams about what could have been. Tanja still slept through the night though but not without tossing and turning, and it wasn’t until 3am that Tanja finally fell into a restful nights sleep. She dreamed of the days leading up to the present moment, of her past birthdays, and fragmented moments of when she met all of her friends. It was all the little things she wanted back and Tanja felt like the world of her dreams were the only place where she could escape from reality. She also dreamed of life growing up with her parents and how she missed everyone that was in her mansion. The maids were home on their day off and Tanja was generous and let her personal butler take the day off for himself. Tanja did that throughout her life, giving the servants and butler’s days off out of the blue and did the same with the maids.
Tanja also dreamed about her mothers cooking and her fathers odd request about giving her a sword made entirely out of priceless gems. Then Tanja never saw a point in it but now…now she may have to use it one day, and Tanja dreaded when that day would come. Tanja wasn’t sure how long she had been peacefully asleep but it wasn’t long before her unexpected awakening came by one of the soldiers.
“Wake up…”

Afternoon of the dead
S1 ep1: The beginning of the end
Prompt: The school day started out like any other regular school day, students were in the hallways chatting along. Teachers were getting stuff ready for their classes, students doing their thing, and even the principal was in his office. Little did anybody know though was that it would be on this day that their lives would forever change…
Missy was taking selfies as she was walking through the hallways towards her friends who were just chatting away about their lives.
“Melissa! Come join us!” Jenny spoke, and Kennedy added “yeah, we were just talking about guys!”
“Of course you were…” Melissa replied as she tucked away her phone. “So what’s new?”
“Tanja has a crush on a college guy!” Jennifer stated.
“No, I don’t.” Tanja spoke flatly and before the group started to ask questions she quickly shut it down with- “I’m going to class, see you nerds and gossip hounds later”
And that was the last normal conversation the friends had before going off to their separate classes, and Tanja had a free period so she spent it in the washroom trying out different things with makeup. Melissa was in her math class and tried not to fall asleep, she got a lot of answers wrong that day. Jennifer was in her P.E. Class shooting afew hoops and playing volleyball at the same time, her friends still wonder how she does it. In Arianna’s history class she was just imagining being in a skatepark and eating the snacks she’s had in her hat (nobody knows how they stay there when she’s skateboarding) and writing down the little snippets she’s actually paid enough attention to hear. Felicia was busy in her science class trying to understand what the heck an atom was and what purpose it served in science, but on the plus side she did like the frog dissection part of the class. Tabitha was just sitting in home economics taking a pop quiz and chewing bubblegum wishing the day would just end already so she could get over to the sleepover her and her friends had planned out two weeks in advance. Kennedy was busy herself with student council work because she had no unfinished assignments from her class in English, brainstorming ideas was her best trait even if they did not always work out.
By the time recess rolled around all of the friends were excited and started to chat about their sleepover plans, and Kennedy decided to tease Tanja about her (not so secret) crush on the college guy named Izon. Just as he was passing by he and Tanja waved to each other, but when he left Tanja’s friends could tell even with all the makeup on her face that she was literally blushing underneath her blush. Those girls had known each other since they were in diapers and despite being very different they all had a close connection despite their differences.
The school day went by in a blur and soon it was lunchtime and the friends all sat down in the cafeteria at their favourite table, not so surprisingly Tanja was doing her blush (again) and her eyeshadow (again) meanwhile the rest of her friends sat down looking like they wished it was Friday, holy hell those friends look like they’ve been bored to death, Jennifer even looks exhausted as if she ran thirty laps around the school.
“How do you do it Tanja? We all know you get bored quicker than all of us!”
“I just focus on something fun, like dress shopping, purse shopping, and even spending time with my dumbass friends”
“Was that a compliment or an insult?”
“Both”
The girls continued laughing at that and cracking jokes throughout the rest of their lunch period, even Tanja laughed at a really bad joke involving three guys walking into a bar. Life was simple at that time and the girls never knew the hell that the unknown disease spreading around would cause…nobody knew their lives would be flipped upside down. Not even the zombie enthusiast that Izon was could have anticipated the world flipping, everyone only got suspicious when students started to cough and display alarming symptoms. The day went on like that, some students the disease took and others remained clueless, after passing out while sick with the unknown disease the sick person would then go after the first one they saw. The school was almost put on lockdown because of it too, then when the buses came to take the students home Tanja and her friends all sat on the bus at the very back. Then her friends of course decided to pull one last teasing move and invite Izon, the college guy to sit with them and he sat with Tanja, and Tanja shot her friends and embarrassed glare.
“So what are you girls doing today?” Izon looked Tanja’s way and she just said “sleepover plans, Tuesday spanning to Thursday”
“You girls always spend everyday together don’t you?”
“Yeah, we’ve been close friends since our diaper days”
“I figured as much, some things never change” and as Izon said that he pulled out a baby picture of Tanja, still in red clothing and an infant sized blue tiara.
“Where did you get that?!” Tanja’s eyes widened and she looked at him, then to a not so guilty looking Melissa.
“What? We’ve all got pictures we aren’t proud of, even the richest among us!”
“You guys are such idiots…” Tanja chuckled, her tone laced with affection.
“Yeah but we’re your idiots!” Felicia said, licking a chocolate icecream.
“Okay guys why don’t we just get to my house and continue our little chat there?”
A collective chuckle resonated within the group and they started talking all the way to Tanja’s house about their favourite shows and movies and Izon’s to no surprise was The Walking Dead, he literally had an entire collection of TWD merchandise. The bus kept dropping the teenagers off to their stops until it was just Tanja and her group, when they approached her house all of their eyes widened. They knew their friend was rich but they had no idea she was THAT rich to have a house bigger than all of their average houses put together and then some. The girls all went inside and Izon followed them, and somehow the inside of the house was much bigger than the outside.
Tanja led them all to the snack room and they all grabbed snacks before heading off to the game room and gathering around their individual consoles, logging onto Minecraft.
“Hey guys what happened at school today? I heard a couple of students bit the teachers” Kennedy spoke up.
“Yeah, the teachers started getting sick too shortly after” Tabitha added.
“Well whatever it was I doubt any of us would want to find out for ourselves” Jennifer added too.
“Yeah, it’ll probably smooth over in afew days time” Tanja shrugged her shoulders and then the girls and Izon all started to have a battle royale in Minecraft to see who the last one standing would be. It was all fun and games for afew hours until police sirens and ambulances were flying by every few minutes. By this point Tanja was starting to think that something was off but she couldn’t place her finger on it. Neither could Izon but he knew it too, and not because he’s watched too much TWD either, but because police sirens and ambulance sirens never passed by nearly that often. By the time 7:00 rolled around people were running on the streets and others were attacking those ones by biting them, none of the friends dared venture out for a closer look, Izon didn’t need to…
“Notice anything off about those people attacking?” Izon asked Tanja, who just responded in a slightly nervous tone of voice.
“No, but whatever it is it’s not good…”
“They almost look like zombies…”
“Izon that’s not funny!”
“Tanja I’m serious, some people’s eyes are glazed over and now they’re acting all crazy, and that’s only after the bite!”
“Well even if you are serious the army and military will soon get things under control” and with that Tanja walked back to her friends, but Izon mumbled something incoherent that only he could’ve heard.
“It’s going to take way longer than afew days for this to be sorted out…”
{Day: Tuesday, time: 9:00}
The chaos outside didn’t die down, if anything it only got worse and worse from the time it started, after several hours and nothing changed everything only escalated, all of the friends were starting to worry at this point…
What was going on?
Why were people attacking each other?
Why are people acting so strange?
…What is that unknown and mysterious virus that was all over the media?
All of those were questions the friends had but decided not to voice, and Felicia was the only soul brave enough to even consider it without immediately shutting the thought down. Tanja went on her phone and started checking her Instagram, Snapchat, Facebook, Tumblr, and every other social media a teenager would have to see if there’s anything on there about the events.
“Uh guys…the military is ordering an immediate evacuation of the whole town…”
Everyone turned their heads to look at Tanja and she knew that look on their faces right away without even thinking.
“Yes guys I’m serious, the military is going around and picking up any people who haven’t been bitten or those who’ve survived the violent brawls…”
Izon sighed and shook his head “I told you so…”
“I told you so won’t help! Okay this place is a little far out even with military jeeps going several miles an hour, maybe we could fortify this place and ride it out until then”
“Tanja I love that idea and all but it isn’t going to work, even if it’s not a zombie apocalypse right now then we’d still be forced by the military to leave our location”
“We have to atleast try!”
“Tanja your talking about disobeying a military given order, I’d rather not have to drag you out”
“Fair point I guess…I’m not shredding this dress”
“I’ll stop asking why…”
Everyone started to replace their stuff at the imminent evacuation protocol the military was putting in place, Tanja was not happy about it and she was hoping that it was all just an elaborate prank, but to her dismay she later finds out that it isn’t…
(Time: 10:00)
Everyone was on the edge of their seats with nervousness and sending out their final goodbye texts to their parents just in case something happened to them. Tanja was looking at all of this and by now even she was starting to freak out a little bit, but she chose not to show it and went back to her makeup. Izon was making sure he had plenty of blades sharpened just in case anything were to go wrong, even handing Tanja her (needlessly expensive made) sword out of different kinds of gems and gemstones. Then the gang keeps awaiting anxiously for the military to roll through, silently freaking out but not daring to scream. Then after an unbearably long wait time…
Screeeeeeeeeeeeeech!
(To be continued)
