In this post, I’m going to talk about the study methods that have worked for me and that I learned during my time at UCLA!
(see another post like this about being healthy here)
Short Term Productivity
Use a stickynote/index card and write a couple goals for today only. Don’t write too many or you will feel overwhelmed! Stick it on your laptop or planner or notebook (somewhere you will see it)
Have a whiteboard at your desk and write down things you need to remember (like a simple equation or some vocab)
While waiting for something (the bus, your coffee, the shower to warm up) have something to recite in your head (probably something you already know, but would like to reALLY KNOW)
When you read, try to tie big concepts to things you would remember easily (like acronyms or symbols) like for example i remember gen chem oxidation as OIL RIG: Oxidation is Loss (of electrons) and Reduction is Gain (of electrons) and I remember the first four unordinary hydrocarbons from Me Eat Peanut Butter (lmao): Methane, Ethane, Propane, Butane
Longer Term Productivity
Plan out your weeks!!! Plan when you will study on each day of the week and keep track of due dates
Make it a habit to do homework/assignments AS SOON AS YOU CAN (like right after you snack or something after classes)
Try not to think about how long you will study and rather think about the number of topics you will study
Don’t stop until you feel confident in your knowledge OTHERWISE YOULL JUST LOSE IT IT ALL
Keep your notes organized because you never know when something is gonna bite you in the butt again in the future
Review everyday. Like, Serioouslyyyy. It helps a lot.
Read before going to bed instead of being on your phone for 400 hours :C I THINK ITS TRUE THAT THE STUFF YOU READ BEFORE BED STAYS WITH YOU BETTER BC YOU GET TO SLEEP ON IT
Try to keep your area quiet or have only white background noise because if someone is talking about the weather and you’re studying math, best believe you’ll only remember the weather
Reading a Textbook
Most of the time, you don’t need to read the introduction paragraphs.
Read the bolded titles to see what you will be getting into
Before class you can skim lightly!! It will help you not feel lost in class
AFTER CLASS you will now FOCUS YOUR READING ON WHAT WAS SAID IN CLASS because most of the time, class-covered topics ARE THE MOST IMPORTANT! save yoself some time!!
When reading after class, do NOT just read. If you go over something that makes you go ??? in even the slightest way, read it again to understand. Look it up. Do it in THAT moment because you’re gonna forget to do it later.
If you don’t wanna read the whole darn book because ur lazy (like me) or you are cramming, READ!! THE!! SUMMARY!!!
The back of the book might have some seriously useful appendixes
Try not to skip the diagrams and pictures lol they’re there for a reason
Taking Notes in Class
dont be on your phone or whatever during class time Like actually PAy attention because if you learn it now, you won’t have to try to learn it again later (you can be on your phone later)
Take down everything written on the boards FOR SURE because if the professor/teacher thinks it’s important to write it, you better think it’s important too
Be an engaged listener! Don’t let it slide straight thru ur head
Try not to scribble your notes so you can read it later
Make CLEAR HEADERS for the topics so you can find those notes quickly
Def make friends in class in case you miss something on the notes ://
Doing Practice Problems and Homework
Get yoUR HOMEWORK DONE FIRST OF ALL
Homework is seriously a great study tool because your instructor assigned that FOR A REASON (aka it’s prob gonna be tested on)
Try to know what you are doing before you start the homework so that you don’t feel lost as heck doing it
When doing practice problems, if you have the answers, don’t be afraid to look at the answer the first time around if you don’t know how to do it. IVE SELF TAUGHT MYSELF SOOOOO MUCH by just looking at the answer to a question.
DONT RELY ON THE ANSWERS THO
Don’t memorize how to do the practice problems, you should memorize the method of solving the problem and understand each step clearly (and understand WHY you do that step!!!) just in case the test pulls some funky stuff on you
The more you can do, the better. But don’t be sleepy and do them because you won’t really retain anything
Other Random Things
My organic chem professor actually did a funny study on sleep and test scores. He said on his final exam he asked “How many hours of sleep did you get last night?”
and like obviously the more hours of sleep reported, generally the higher the student scored on the exam
SLEEEEPING IS GOOD FOR YOUR LEARNING
WHEN YOU SLEEP AND HIT THE REM CYCLE, YOUR BRAIN PROCESSES THE INFORMATION BETTER and it will really stay with you. So yall need to sleep. Don’t do the all nighters. You won’t remember anything
anyways like nike you should Just Do It
I hope you guys find this useful!! Remember that everyone has different needs and preferences, so take these tips as just tips and not rules!! Experiment with things, see what you like best, see what gives you the best scores.
Good luck with everything~ thank you for reading!

Any tips for studying without falling asleep?! It never fails as soon as I start studying I get really sleepy and can’t stop yawning!
Here are a few ideas:
eating something that gives you energy - apples are probably best, but I guess a few sweets might be more enjoyable hah!
have a coffee - obviously, not the best option but reliable for most
have a very cold drink - water bottles with ice holders are great!
put on some of your favourite music before - you might just get into a bit better mood and wake up a little.
have a cold shower in the morning/before studying - this tends to make you feel more alert and productive.
chew gum - apparently, it helps you stay focused for longer!
don’t rely on your laptop - this can be an easy way to procrastinate and lose your attention. If you try using pen and paper, you’ll be more engaged in the content and should help you maintain focus.

How can I be a [more] decent person?
You know, I’ve been thinking about this message for the past few days. I would hope that I’m a nice person and have good intentions but I’m definitely not perfect! Here are a couple of things I’d recommend (or I’d like to do myself):
put yourself first - seems counterproductive, but it is important for you to make sure you’re having time for yourself. You can’t constantly be putting other people’s needs before yours.
do something kind each day - I think this is a cute rule to live by. Just one act of kindness each day can help you feel better. It can be a friend, a family member or a stranger.
spend time on your hobbies - as mentioned above, it is important to spend time doing the things you enjoy. You’re learning and enjoying yourself by doing your hobby so you’ll feel better inside :-)
make more effort with your friends or family - I am one of those people that easily thinks people might not care about me and can be dismissive if I’ve not talked to them for a while. I think I get it from my mum! But, I am making more of an effort in spending time with my friends. I definitely feel better when I’m having regular social contact :’-) This is a bit off on a tangent, but I really like gifting nice things that people will enjoy. I have a list of names and potential gift ideas so when someone’s birthday comes up, I have a few or a great idea that I know they’d like! That little effort makes me feel happy and the recipient too!
read the ‘Subtle Art of Giving a Fuck’ by Mark Manson - I feel this book was a really good eye-opener. It helped me to learn to decide where I should place my values, my mindsets and what I care about. If you can’t get a hold of it, I will do a review on my Youtube of it - say like a “5 things I’ve learnt” so you can get the main gist.
put more effort into learning - over the past few months, I’ve started listening to more podcasts! It is a great way to gain knowledge, insight and different perspectives from other people. I have so many that I love to listen too!
remember, you don’t need validation from others - the only opinion of you that matters is your own! Take small steps to feel more confident in yourself :-) I definitely feel better about myself when I have taken more pride in my appearance and just general wellbeing.
If anyone has other suggestions, I’d love to hear them! xx

| Friday, October 27 2017 | *taken from my instagram: @academnotes* Okay so ASDFGHJKLD I can’t stand the fact that I messed up the order of the rainbow and I wasnt thinking at all asdfghjkl. I don’t want to redo my notes because thats a waste of time and the mistake is so small it’s unjustifiable. So my “fix” was to draw arrows and make sure I knew that the colors are supposed ro be reversed 😫 Ugh the perfectionist in me is screaming but oh well..

it is i, another studyblr introduction
hello everyone! i’ve been stalking the studyblr community for a while and i finally decided what the hell, might make one of these things since all the other kids are doing it (also my old blog has some really cringey stuff on it from freshman year so…yeah…time to say goodbye).
my real name means “illusion” which is where my blog name comes from, but you can refer to me by my pen name, pyxel (or if you’re like, really cool, pyx).
i am female so my pronouns are she/her, but i don’t have a problem with they/them.
i am mixed race (half white half desi) and am from the southern u.s. i do not speak any other languages, unfortunately.
i guess i am…bi or pan? idk, i’m still not really out.
i’m fairly political and i lean center left, so if that’s something you don’t want in a studyblr you can block my tag.
i’m pretty heavily geeky also-lotr, asoiaf, mcu, dcu, hp, sw, wot are a few of my main fandoms.
i’m not super into k-pop like a lot of people on here, but i do enjoy it, especially bts and blackpink.
i’m kind of a writer, so i may post some stuff about it from time to time.
i’m a junior at a competitive public highschool currently, and i hope this blog will help me get off my ass and do something.
ap classes i’ve taken: ap human geography, ap european history. i got a 5 on human and a 4 on euro, so if you want tips you can message me. or i might make a post about them, idk.
ap classes i’m currently taking: ap biology, ap english language and composition, ap u.s. history, ap psychology, and ap us government and politics. the jury is still out on these but i hope to get a 5 on all 5!
i’m more of an language than a science person, but i want to major in the sciences so…we’ll see.
i have really low confidence in math, which is something i’m working on, because once i learn a math concept i’m not bad.
i’m taking two classes (ap gov, precal honors) online this year which is…hell, but ya girl’s gotta graduate.
i’m a member of science olympiad and model un at my school, as well as my school’s (dying and underfunded) drama program. i also volunteer at my school’s writing center and help refugee kids in my area with their homework once a week. so…yeah, this year has been kinda busy but i wouldn’t miss it for the world. extracurricular activities are super fun and rewarding if you get into them.
around my friends i’m kinda wild but around people i don’t know very well, i come across kinda standoffish. is that called being an introvert?
blogs that inspire me: the og @studyblr the nicest most helpful human @emmastudies calligraphy overlord @sprouht-studies bujo queen @sadgirlstudying total aesthetic @studylustre the love of my life and handwriting goals @tbhstudying
more blog faves: @the-girlygeek great wallpapers aaaaaah @fuckstudy who did u kill to get the url my guy @studyquill jasmine’s ap euro notes got me screamin @studytherin of the hp queue @bookmrk and @einstetic i appreciate y’all for not just reblogging the popular blogs posts @gloomstudy and @athenus for quality bujo pics @academiix for the fighting perfectionist culture @jiyeonstudies wnd @chrissiestudies for the k-pop and so so many more
