Hooray, it’s done.

This is because we decided to make Sunburst OC content. I had to design uniforms, it was a shit time…

But here. Have some pre-Sunburst. Ayame was tasked with walking Ray to school cause she got lost so easily. When you have a new, pretty much silent stepsister… sometimes  you get a little nervous.

And sometimes your giant stepsister isn’t paying attention at all and sees a kitty.

So I was thinking about the schools the Sun Girls would go to if they all did idol schools and it would break down like this (asterisks for current school):

Ray - Dream Academy, the only school that be able to handle her attitude

Lila - Venus Arc, because they only take perfect students and actually care about academics

Lena - Four Star Academy*

Ayame - Star Harmony Academy*

Ai - Starlight School (* because she did go there... but transferred out in middle school when she quit being an idol the first time around)

Ji-min - Shining Star School (* Again, drop out. But lol Shining Star crossover!)

I just realized that Sunburst’s coord cards are the Aikatsu equivalent of TCG proxy decks.

Because, listen. Some of them aren’t idols with legit brands. Most of them don’t belong to idol schools. Where are they going to get legit cards on their allowances? 

Enter proxy cards. They come up with the design, AI codes it into the system, and they make a card from it. Is it legit? Most likely, no. However, codes don’t give a shit.

Do they look good? Probably not. But they have writing on them to say what they are and that’s good enough for Sunburst. Slap that piece of shit on the podium, let’s go.

Will it make a miracle aura or a jeweling dress? Probably not, but that’s why we have Sunspots instead of Miracle Auras. And isn’t that Sunburst as hell anyway?

Happy 2 year anniversary, Sunburst!

I was going to draw something for this, but... my tablet died. Rip Silver, you will be avenged.

Anyway, Sunburst Idol Unit is officially 2 years old today! What started as me (gremlin) ranting turned into a nightmare that I have yet to wake up from! By which I mean I wouldn’t trade a moment of it for the world. I love ripping Aikatsu a new one while exploring these subtypes of characters that would never get a chance to shine in the pure series. 

Here’s to the next year and all the nonsense it’ll bring!

Sometimes you’re a little under-dressed to regain your S4 title, but that’s ok when you destroy your admin and make them regret ever picking up a mic.

So... what the hell is this nonsense?

I figure the first post should be about what Sunburst is. 

So... what is it?

Co-writer (Chelmite)’s take: 

Sunburst is both an unrequited love letter to a cultural phenomenon, and a cry of despondency at the same phenomenon. It is a labor of love crafted out of sheer dissatisfaction, and it is a reminder that just because something Is doesn't mean it has to Be. It is a plea that we take our own lessons to heart: that the media which teach us lessons be themselves subject to their own messages.

It's also a bunch of the most mismatched nerds ever stumbling ass-first into  fame, infamy, and family, and trying to fix way too much that's wrong with the world.

Gremlin’s take:

Sunburst is what happens when you get fed up with something you used to love and complain about it so many times to somebody that it becomes a Thing. When enjoyment becomes frustration, and then outright annoyance at what could have been. It’s a fix-it fanfic with a side of screw the rules, I have non existent world building anyway.

It’s what happens when you break down an Aikatsu protagonist into her base components and give them to two of the most not appropriate idiots there is, and then watch them grow a group together to take on the idol gods themselves.

I’m the guy at the clipboard still trying to figure out how the Aikatsu on Parade multiverse works. 

And that’s basically our specialties. Gremlin brings the idol, Co-writer has the music know-how. We both bring writing to the table in various forms.  Look forward to more nonsense between us.

Idol type: Cute

Color: either lilac or cherry red

Charm points: Wears skirts constantly. This includes his modified school uniform. He’s a gyaruo that… goes his own way when it comes to fashion since he loves cute things. Comes from a highly traditional family and has been trained to use a sword. Prefers not to, but he has kicked ass before and will do so again. But again, he prefers being cute and happy. 

Preferred brand: unnamed gyaru-style cute brand.

My OCs met

Me and Sunburst’s co-creator Alex were joking about Sunburst one night when both of us needed distraction. He asked me what Lena, my AiStars OC, would think of Sunburst.

Lena would fucking love Sunburst. 

And that’s how it began. How Aya and Ray watching Discipline Duo introduces Vaughan to Yotsuboshi Gakuen and S4. And how eventually, Lena and Sunburst’s paths meet.

They click. They click so fast, guys. A new S4 member feeling bitter and a bunch of wild, crazy punk ass baby idols just mesh. They start bouncing ideas off each other and of course, if you know Tsukamoto Lena you know of the infamous “I tried to punch Elza Forte” incident of ‘17. People are still talking about it, and making it into S4 has only slowly made a dent.

Well… turns out Sunburst is very much agreed on the “is punching a mega idol because of her shitty philosophy” issue and the answer is yes. Elza might have turned over a new leaf… but there’s a score to settle. 

Who wants payback? 

A collab effort springs up between Lena and Sunburst. It eventually forms a song we’ve tentatively titled shicchou/shit show. Because obvious reasons. Lena features in it with her metal vocals. But… oh, when to debut such a song?

How about when Elza and NVA hit Japan again? And why don’t we do it in a flash mob. The key is “kick it Barack” from Vaughan, which almost blows the plan up because you fucking memelord.

Anyway, that’s how my OCs met and collabed on a verbal shitpost to Elza Forte and Neo Venus Ark.

Last night my friend and I came up with the best idol two person unit. They’re also two members of a larger unit. Sunburst (the large unit) basically says fuck it to the established rules of idols and takes self production to a whole new level. They are the music, the costumes, and the lyrics. DIYkatsu this shit. 

Introducing Ray Jones. She debuted as a cool idol for Star Harmony Academy… but it didn’t feel right. Enter Vaughan McDouglass the genki pop idol with a blues edge.The two saw each other and something just… clicked.

“JOIN MY IDOL UNIT.” They both shouted at each other, neither actually having a unit to join yet. But damn if they weren’t going to make one! Somehow… how? IDK but they do and it’s awesome.

(Yes their names are great. There’s reasons. Good ones too. And yes beep beep is a male idol. Don’t like it tough that’s how Sunburst does things.)
