Solar System Diagrams - What Are They And How Do They Help?
The Solar System is nearly the only gravitationally binding system in the Solar Systems and the only objects which orbit around it, directly or indirectly, are the planets. The other objects which orbit around the Sun indirectly, are the asteroid belt, comets, and small Solar System rocky bodies. All other objects have free-floating movement in space. Although not a ring of stars, there is another large satellite in our solar system called Jupiter. Its gravitational pull pulls on all the other satellites.
Although not a planet, Jupiter is one of the largest planets in our solar system. It also has several moons which orbit around it. Some of those moons are very hot, like the Galilean satellites; some cool, like the inner planet Ganymede; and some, not so cool (and quite a bit bigger), like the Earth. The moons of Jupiter's outer planet Mercury are also thought to be influencing how much radiation reaches our planet, because they orbit close to it. They also act like snowballs, blocking out much of the sun's radiation as they move around. So, solar systems with numerous smaller Jupiter moons could get more of that radiation.
If we had two solar system objects closely orbiting each other, and one was a brown dwarf, which is an irregularly shaped dwarf, and the other a gas giant like Jupiter, they would almost certainly be tidally locked. They would also almost certainly not wobble as much as a real planet rotating on its axis would. There are many such objects within our solar system. The two closest are called Ophiuchus and Halimeda, and they are also very cold.
The third type of planetary motion is that of an object rotating close to the solar system. These objects would be very cold, and so very hard to catch in a photographic camera, as the light from them is very short. Yet, they would have a strong chance of being within our solar system if the outer solar system had many other objects like it rotating close by. One such object is Sedna. It is believed to be a frozen comet, and if there are other like objects close by, they will also have an impact on our solar system.
If all of these objects were rotating roughly in the same plane as our system, it would be like one huge spinning tornado. It would be very difficult to see any difference with a photographic camera, except perhaps in very faint red or green. It would be like watching a swarm of birds flying by. The objects closest to the system would be the first to appear, and then the next closest, and so on.
But, when you do see something like this in a photo, you can actually see the rotation of multiple objects within the single solar system, in the same photograph. They would look like little grains of sand, and they would be rotating very rapidly. You might think that it is just an airplane flying by, but it isn't. These grains of sand would also be rotating very rapidly, so that you could rotate a photo within the system, and get a very high resolution image of what you are looking at.
If you take a picture of your sun in the solar system diagram, and then projected it onto a sphere, you would be able to see the grains of sand on the sphere. If you were able to see the rotation of these grains, then you could learn a lot about the composition of that part of space. Knowing this kind of thing is useful for learning about space, for studying the solar system, and for planning a trip to see real solar systems. It is also useful to see if you are getting a good photo for your telescope!

However, there are also many theories that suggest that other, earlier formations were made before the solar nebula, at the time of the Earth's formation. This is particularly true for the moon, which received a great deal of material from bigger solar system planets.
