The fact that Harry is reading Rainer Maria Rilke and casually quoting him like that 🤯

So, I went in search of the quote having no knowledge of Rilke at all, but I found so much more, and it’s so interesting.

These are quotes taken from an article called The Difficult Art of Giving Space in Love: Rilke on Freedom, Togetherness, and the Secret to a Good Marriage, where the author takes a Rilke anthology and breaks down the thoughts. It’s really interesting, because it’s so centered on caring for a long term relationship and ensuring it’s longevity and happiness and it just… makes you think about what Harry is reading and why.

My conclusion: Maybe “Do you protect each other’s solitude?” is a phrase Harry learned from therapy, or maybe he reads Rilke just for the betterment of his person.

But it’s such interesting phrasing that it’s by no means spontaneous, and that has me wondering why he’s working on things particularly related to ensuring a long term relationship (in Rilke’s words: a marriage) flourishes in its solitude, individuality and distance.

hi!! im in a bit of a rut with my writing and since i get most of my writing advice from this account, do you have any tips for writing for arguments? it seems like an easy thing to write for, but as it turns out, writing good people as angry but not toxic-harmful is harder than it looks askjhjkas

How to write an argument

What is it about?

this can often be answered with one instance/one thing they argue about

but remember that most arguments have an underlying issue

something they actually fight about, something that made them angry or anxious enough to get into an argument, sometimes about small and unimportant things

in short: arguments are often proxy wars for other problems

toxic vs. non-toxic

when people are in extremely emotional situations they tend to act irrational and say things they normally wouldn't - the good and the bad ones

the differences between them:

a non-toxic person has a much higher threshold to saying things that deliberately hurts the other person, there would need to be extreme stress for them to do that

for a toxic person, this would come much more easier and quicker, they don't have to be provoked that much or at all to lash out

a non-toxic person would realize what they did immediately and feel genuinely bad about it, because hurting other people is not what they normally do and nothing they want to do; they would apologize very genuinely and they would know that the other person is definitely within their right to not accept that apology; they would give them their space and only try to make it up to them if the other person still wants them to be around

a toxic person would probably not feel bad, but within their own rights; if they apologize, it's more like an act involving gaslighting, telling the other person 'I'm sorry, but...' and basically faulting the other person for making them like that, for provoking them

Summary

people tend to not be their best self in an argument and much more controlled by emotions

there are often other underlying issues that suddenly come up in an argument, even if that argument wasn't originally about this topic

to keep it non-toxic, you could have your characters genuinely apologize and respect the other's wishes

they could also walk away from the argument to calm down and then come back later to rationally solve the issue

you may have encountered this question before, but what advice would you give to avoid 'info dumping' in world building?

I feel like there's a thin line between stopping the narrative to educate readers on sth happening and overwhelming them with information mid-narrative. Any tips?

Managing the flow of information in worldbuilding can be tricky but crucial for maintaining reader engagement. Here are some tips to avoid info dumping:

Integrate information naturally. Rather than stopping the narrative to explain details about your world, try to weave them seamlessly into the story. Show rather than tell whenever possible. For example, instead of describing the history of a city, have characters interact with elements of that history, or have a character bring it up in dialogue.

Focus on relevant details. Only include information that is essential to the plot or character development. Ask yourself whether the detail you're providing is necessary for the reader to understand the current scene or advance the story. If not, consider leaving it out or finding a more subtle way to introduce it later.

Drip-feed information. Instead of dumping large amounts of information all at once, sprinkle details throughout the narrative. This keeps readers engaged and curious, as they gradually piece together the world without feeling overwhelmed.

Use dialogue & interaction. Characters can be great vehicles for delivering information about the world in a natural way. Through dialogue, you can reveal aspects of the world while also developing character relationships and dynamics.

Show, don’t tell. Redundant as this piece of advice is, it's important to keep in mind. Rather than explaining the intricacies of your world directly to the reader, demonstrate them through action, dialogue, and description. Let readers experience the world alongside your characters.

Start small. Begin with small details and gradually expand the world as the story progresses. This prevents overwhelming readers with too much information upfront and allows them to become familiar with the world at a comfortable pace.

Trust your readers. Readers can infer information from context clues (sometimes information that the author themself didn't actually think about). Trust them to pick up on subtle hints and nuances without needing everything spelled out explicitly.

Use back matter. Consider including supplementary material at the end of your book, such as a glossary or appendix, for readers who want to delve deeper into the world without interrupting the narrative flow.

Remember, worldbuilding should enhance the story, not overshadow it. Hope this was helpful ❤
