୨ৎ Summary: Ellie hated you, like in a way she felt her guts turn when she saw you and your friends laughing and talking in the school halls. Lucky for her, you guys got paired up for a biology project. She hated the idea and she knew that the next four weeks were going to be hell for her. But you proofed her wrong, showing her that you’re more than what people think you are.
୨ৎ———୨ৎ
If you found comfort in one thing, then it’s art class. Not only do you get to show off your skills, but also is Mrs. Linton a literal angel. To you this woman feels somewhere between a big sister and a mother, just someone who gets you and compliments your every outfit. To that does this room have a certain atmosphere that you can’t really describe, but it made you feel save and comforted, like you couldn’t make any mistakes in here.
Or maybe it’s all the pain fumes getting to your brain.
While your hands were busy sculpting the stubborn clay into a face the conversation between you and your friends was flowing and somehow you felt good again. Just maybe it’s not all that bad and you just needed to calm down. “I still can’t believe you and Nick are dating now.” Those words caught your attention, seeing how Chloe beamed as Cat spoke. Those were definitely some news to you, the same guy that continuously tries to flirt with you is now dating Chloe? Interesting development. If the shoe fits…
“You’re dating Nick?” You asked, your voice sounding more shocked than intended as you dig your fingers into the clay face nostrils.
Chloe’s scoff-laughs, the way that would make your skin crawl if you weren’t her friend. “Didn’t you read the group chat?”
“No, sorry I was a little out of it yesterday, went to sleep early.” The girls around you just laughed, explaining the whole situation to you. Sure, you were happy for her, but you also had a bad feeling when it came to that guy.
As you finally finished your clay face, getting up from your seat to wash your hands you stand right next to Dina, who was desperately try to get paint off of her jeans, cursing under her breath. You watched her struggle, getting rid of all the clay from under your nails. “Do you need help?” You asked as you dried your hands on the paper towels. She looked up at you, her eyes filled with desperation. “Please.”
You chuckled, examining her jeans. If you knew one thing then it’s how to get paint stains out of your clothes, having your own clothes be victims way too many times before. “Mhm, Is this acrylic or oil paint?”
“Acrylic.” You hummed and nod towards your table. “Nothing some hand sanitizer can’t fix.” Making your way to your desk with Dina in companion, you could feel your friends looking at you confused. Some else certainly also had their eyes on you, looking even more confused than your friends and it’s no one else but Ellie. Her eyes locked with Dina’s, raising an eyebrow with her lips curling in disgust almost. Dina just shot her a glare.
Your hands rummage through your bag, trying to locate your hand sanitizer. “Fuck, I can’t find it. Does any one of you have some sanitizer?” Your friends just look among themselves, shrugging and shaking their heads. The sigh that escaped your lips hardly covered up for the eye roll you tried to suppress. You were sure one of them had some, but they’d never be willing to give it to someone like Dina.
“I think Ellie has some,” Dina then said, making you turn around to her. “Great,” you smiled and gesture her to walk back to their table. Somehow you could already taste blood on your tongue, knowing Ellie is already annoyed at you.
With your hips swaying and your boots clacking against the ground, you could practically feel Ellie’s annoyance. Maybe it was because you’re too perfect. Maybe you were too hot to handle. That’s definitely it. You had to bite your lip to try and cover your smile as those thoughts crossed your mind, knowing if you ever said those out loud Ellie would try her best to prove you wrong.
“Ellie, you’ve got some hand sanitizer, right?” Dina asked, taking her seat next to Ellie. With an annoying undertone and a hardly suppressed groan at your mere existents she got out the small bottle of hand sanitizer. The packaging was green with a small dinosaur on it, making you smile a little. Watching her hand it over to Dina you stretched out your hand. “Let me do it for you,” you said with that sweet, sweet smile of yours.
Taking the sanitizer, examining it for a second you notice Ellie’s eyes looking at you like she’s about to bite you—not in a good way. “Of course your hand sanitizer would be decorated with dinosaurs.”
“Whats that supposed to mean?” Ellie’s voice was agitated, fitting right to the expression on her face. Which was also kind of contradictory hence her naturally cute face. Small nose, big eyes and pouty lips: cute. Technically she’s just a slightly intimidating toddler.
You squatted down, pushing Dinas legs apart a little to apply the sanitizer on the paint splotch on her thigh. “Damn, take me out to dinner first,” Dina spoke, making you giggle as you started rubbing at her thigh with a paper towel. “Is it hot in here or is it just me?” You said as you jokingly fan your face with your free hand, making Dina laugh heartily. “Oh that’s you,” she said with a playful wink.
You finally successfully assassinated the paint in Dinas pants, getting up again. “Oh, I know I’m hot, you don’t need to tell me. But so are you.” With a playful wink you handed Ellie her silly sanitizer back, walking away.
Dina turned to Ellie, watching her eyes follow you, her eyes furrowed. “Well I think she’s nice.” Ellie’s eyes snap back to Dina, her lips parting in disgusted confusion and scoffed. “It’s all an act.”
“You’re just too negative.” Dina rolled her eyes, picking up her paint brush again. But Ellie just sighed, running a hand through her hair as you took back your seat and cross your legs, making the leather of your boots squeelch. Ellie cringed, her eyebrows still in that constant furrow. “Who wears boots in the summer anyway?”
It’s just her luck, sharing both biology and art class with you.
“Be honest, who was the last person you made out with?” Jennie asked as your group walked out of school, the day finally having ended. You laughed, shaking your head. “No way I’m telling you that.”
“Oh come on you’ve been so secretive about your love life it’s driving us crazy! You’re a bad bitch, don’t tell me you’ve got nothing going on for you.” You smiled at Michelle’s comment, shaking your head once again. But then your eyes found her.
Ellie stood by her car, some beat up truck she got from her dad on her 16th birthday. You quickly excused yourself from your friend again, untangling your arms from theirs. “Sorry, I’ve gotta discuss something again, I’ll see you tomorrow.”
The girls watched you walking away, sighs and looks being exchanged. “That’s like the hundredth time today that she’s running after Ellie,” Jennie said as they all slowly walked down the steps of the school. “That dyke put a spell on her, I’ll tell you that,” Chloe says as she heads for her car.
Yeah, she’s definitely using that word too freely, because you still caught her saying it but chose to ignore it.
“Ellie!” You called out as you walked up to her, having to interrupt her conversation with Jesse. Her eye roll was not to miss, making it take everything in you not to sigh in frustration. Why the fuck did she hate you so much?
“I’m gonna get the brine shrimp eggs now, so please make sure to text me so I can have your contact saved on my phone, since I need to send you the pictures at least. Plus, we need to discuss when you’re coming over to actually do the project with me.” As you spoke Ellie didn’t even look at you, suddenly seeming to be very interested in her nail beds.
“Yeah, I’ll text you,” she said with her usual dismissive voice, making you actually frustrated this time. “Please actually do, I want this to work out.” Finally your eyes met, seeing her flat expression made you feel so much worse.
You never did anything bad to her—not directly at least— and yet she treats you like the worst person on this planet. “Alright,” you sigh as she doesn’t even say anything anymore. “I’ll just… yeah, I’ll go. Bye.” You turned on your heels, walking away towards your car.
“Bro,” Jesse said, lightly punching Ellie’s shoulder. “Hey!” She gasped and held her shoulder dramatically. “What was that for?”
“Why are you being so mean to her? She’s obviously trying to make this work! You’re out here acting like she’s the worst person ever while she’s out her being actually nice to you.” Jesses words were true, a little too true and Ellie didn’t like that. Because never in a million years will she admit that you’re nice. To her you’re still a bitch and nothing will change that.
“Oh don’t you start again, you and Dina already lectured me earlier.”
“Maybe because we’re right.”
“Sure, whatever man, just get in the car.”
The blue lights, the buzzing sound of the water tanks being cleaned and warmed made you some how feel comforted. A father was standing there with his son, the boys little fingers pointing at the guppy fish he wanted. A smile made its way on your face as you watched and walked through the store, perhaps a little distracted and tempted to get a buddy for Lacy.
Suddenly you heard a voice from behind you as you stared at the betta fish they kept. “Looking for something specific?” A male voice asked, making you turn around.
“Oh, no yeah, I’m just here for some brine shrimp eggs. I got a little distracted by this beauty.” The guy smiled as you talked and pointed behind you, but you immediately notice him eyeing you up and down. Sometimes you think you’ve got main character syndrome or maybe men really seem to be drawn to you like moth to a flame.
“Would you be interested to taking one home?” He leaned nonchalantly against a tank, crossing his arms over his chest. “No, no, I’m afraid that my little lady at home will get into a bitch fight if I get her a sister. Even if it’s tempting.” He chuckled, his eyes traveling up and down your body again.
“Well, I could at least show you to those eggs you wanted.” You nod, taking on his invitation and started following him as he walked towards a wooden stand with cardboard packages of eggs. He hands you a small blue package, smiling as you examined the box.
“You need them for a project or something?” You nodded, still looking at the box, trying to look as invested as possible so you don’t have to hold eye contact with him. “Yeah, testing their behavior in different salt water levels.” He hummed and took a small step towards you, but you quickly looked up, shooting him a friendly smile.
“Thanks,” you smile as you hold up the eggs. “I’ll just,” you point behind yourself at the register, turning around to see the register empty. Right, of course. “Right behind ya,” he said and followed you to the register.
As he rang you up and you pulled out your wallet you felt his eyes on you, in a way it was really uncomfortable. “That’d be 10 bucks.” You hand him the bill and before he could say anything else you made your way out of that store.
Awkward.
Meanwhile Ellie had her fun, playing some games in her room with Jesse as they munched on some ramen noodles. “HA HA!” Ellie shouted as she defeated Jesse in Mario cart once again, making him throw his controller onto the bed. “I’m just so goated!” That earned Ellie a shove from him and a grumble. She just laughed at him, pushing him as well, which ended in them full on tackling each other and almost knocking over their ramen.
It didn’t take long for Ellie to end up on the floor, laughing hysterically, Jesse sat in the edge of the bed, holding up his arms triumphantly. “I’m actually the goat!” He croaked as he flexes his arms, earning a kick against his leg from Ellie.
“At least I got a trophy for my wins,” Ellie said as she pushed herself up from her rug, the one she got when she was 7, which explains why it looks the way it does now. But she couldn’t throw it out, no matter how much Joel pushed her to do it. It’s literally the solar system, what do you expect?!
“A digital one,” Jesse said as he slid down the bed, taking a seat on the floor as well. “For my victory I want you to finally man up and text y/n.”
Hearing your name alone made Ellie’s eyes shoot up at Jesse, glaring at him like he just said the most ridiculous thing ever. “Why are you bringing that up all of a sudden?” She ran a frustrated hand through her hair, like the mere thought of you stressed her out. She already knew that this project will end up in giving her a bunch of gray hairs. “Besides, I’m not going to ‘man up’, I’m a lady.” She tried to flick her hair behind her shoulder, though without success as her short hair just fell back into her face.
Jesse chuckled, rolling his eyes at her dumb antics. “Because, Ellie. You’ve been avoiding and mistreating that poor girl for the past few days.”
“Yesterday was like the first time we talked, besides, that still doesn’t explain your sudden change of topic.”
“Just do it bro, you’re acting childish. Also, I kinda wanna see those shrimp she was talking about.”
Ellie laughed and took a pillow from her bed, throwing it at him for calling her childish. That really just proved his point. “So that’s why you’re bringing this up, because you want shrimp? Don’t get your hopes up, those fuckers are just some minuscule, see through things that you can’t eat.”
“Aw man, got me there,” he said as he threw the pillow back at Ellie. “You’re still not getting out of texting her.” Ellie groaned and dramatically fell back onto the floor. It’s not that she’s unmotivated for the project or is too lazy to do anything, she just doesn’t want to speak to you.
Jesse picked up her phone and tossed it at her. “Now text her.” With a reluctant eye roll and a groan she picked up her phone and opened your contact. “Fuck you,” she grumbled at Jesse and began typing.
Ellie:
Hey it’s Ellie
After she finally typed out a message to you she showed her phone to Jesse, making him smirk and reach over to pad her shoulder. “See was it that hard?” She sighed, rolling her eyes but not being able hide the small smirk that made its way onto her lips. “No, but that still doesn’t change the fact that I don’t want anything to do with her.”
“Stop being so negativ. It’s not like you have to be best buddies with her. Just do the project and you’re done.”
“That’s easy for you to say.” With dramatic theatrics she laid back down onto the rug, closing her eyes. “Not everyone is like Cat, you know,” Jesse said and laid down next to her.
“I know that,” she sighed, her voice small, like she wasn’t sure if she told the truth. Maybe you weren’t too bad, but she couldn’t bring herself to think better of you. It’s this mental blockage that stops her from seeing you like everyone else. Even if you were nothing like Cat.

Thank you all for all the support I’ve been getting!!! I’m still trying to figure out how to work this and all, but I think I’m getting the hang of it.

୨ৎ———୨ৎ
Ellie was glad to finally be able to lay all sprawled out on her bed, sighing into her pillow as if she just had the most draining day of her life. Maybe she had.
But her mind wasn’t leaving her alone, only orbiting around the damn biology project. You two haven’t even started yet and it was already all she could think about. But it was the usual for her, always seeking for the perfect grades, preferably with minimal effort.
Just the thought of having to spend time with you, watching those stupid sea creatures, it taunted her. How your friends called her those words without second thought and the way you just laughed along. In reality you really were just some evil bitch to her, hidden beneath silk fabric, lace trimming, pink glitter, too much perfume and golden jewelry.
Gosh she hated this, but she hated your stupid friend even more. Every time that word fell from their lips like it was nothing, she wishes she could just swing at them. Let their faces bleed and make them cry out of shame and broken bones.
Her hands clutched the green fabric of her bedding, holding back the scream in her throat to not scare her parents. But all she wishes for is to wipe that cock sure smile of your face and make you feel the reality of the word. She wanted you and your bimbo friends to know what she felt like, how those words hit her deep in the chest.
Like you felt any different…
Dropping your bag onto your floor and lying down on the bed with an exhausted sigh. The laughter from your friends still ringing in your ears. The white silk sheets with pink flowers on them feeling all too familiar to your touch. You felt terrible, like it was all your fault. Hearing your so called “friends” talk like that about Ellie… it certainly didn’t feel good.
It’s not like you could’ve done anything, right? Right? If you spoke up you knew that the others wouldn’t have taken you seriously or worse, they’d think you’re weird. Weird for defending the gay girl. Weird for not being on their side. So you just smiled and laughed, just like you always do.
You puffed out air and turned your head over to your aquarium. Your little betta fish swimming with no care in the world. No grades, no reputation to uphold, no hiding your true self and no homophobia.
“Oh to be you, Lacy,” you whispered under your breath, closing your eyes and wrapping your own arms around yourself.
Self-pity monday or something like that…
It was odd to think about the fact that not a single one of your friends actually knew you. They couldn’t see past your glitter eyeshadow and perfect smile. If someone asked them about you they wouldn’t be able to say anything about you. Fuck and if they knew, they’d think you’re weird. Because honestly, deep down you’re also just a nerd. A girl who loves sea creatures, video games, comics and fantasy novels.
Maybe this project wasn’t too bad. Maybe it’s a way for you to get to know someone else who isn’t shallow and obsessed with popularity. Maybe you could befriend Ellie.
All your mornings start the same, gossip and drama, like it’s the only thing those girls know. Standing by the lockers and nodding along, adding your own comments and pretending to fawn over whatever boys they’re talking about.
But your attention was taken by auburn hair slamming her locker shut just a little too hard. Your eyes locked for a second, but she was quick to walk away and head towards whatever class she had next. You looked between your friends, quickly trying to make up an excuse to leave. “I just remembered, I have something to discuss with Mrs. Linton. I’ll see you at lunch,” you said, quickly blowing them a kiss and making your way toward Ellie without them noticing.
“Ellie?” You said as you jogged up to her, trying to get her attention. “You didn’t text me last night. I was planning on getting the brine shrimp eggs today, so I was thinking you could come over to my place so we could set this up together.” You pulled your lips into a sweet little smile again, trying to get her to agree to your proposal.
But she just shrugged, like she always does. Damn. You’re out here trying to be kind. Everyone else would have already folded, giving into your sweetness. You knew she didn’t like you, but she could at least try and make it seem like she did. “I can’t today, just do it by yourself and send me some pics.”
“Oh come on, we can go out, buy the shrimp and maybe get a coffee together. Or tea, if you like that better? I’ll pay.” Apparently batting your eyelashes and smiling didn’t seem to work on her, neither does your cute tone and offer. Because she stopped, turning to you.
“Look, I’m not doing this. I don’t want to be your friend, there’s nothing I want less than that. Whatever game of humiliation you’re trying to play isn’t going to work on me. I’m not your guys’ experiment.” Ellie’s words came out sharp, biting and you just gaped at her. You shook your head, unsure of what to say.
“It’s not like that, I just want-“
“I don’t like you.”
“Oh,” you said like you didn’t already know. Maybe you needed rejection, but not this harsh. But if she going to play this way, you’re not going to back down. You’re not going to be anyone’s toy either. “Fine, but we still have to do this damn project. So either you cooperate and at least do some part of this thing, or I’ll actually do nothing and just make you do all of it.”
Ellie sighed, pinching the top of her nose bridge like a cartoon character and nodded. “Fine. I’ll come over every two days and examine their behavior, but no bullshit. And tell your little friends that I’m not their lab monkey.”
You listened to her words and only felt more confused as she added the last part. “I’m my own person you know, not everything I say is backhanded and my friends have nothing to do with this.” At your explanation Ellie just waved her hand, dismissing your words.
“Yeah, yeah, whatever you say.”
You just watched her walk away, annoyed at her snarky words and yet also feeling let down. Nothing you said was supposed to be mean or backhanded, you just tried to befriend her. Her words made you wonder, just why she hates you so much and why she can’t even trust a word you say. Either she heard bad shit about you or maybe she’s just a bitch herself.
Maybe that’s why you’re where you are, because you’re not cut out for this, non of it. Maybe you’re never intended to have any actual friends. Maybe no one will ever understand the real you.
You turned around, the heels on your knee-high boots being obnoxiously loud. Yeah, that’s probably one of the annoying things about you.
Too extra for people like Ellie, too “weird” to be yourself around others.
Sitting in class with your pen twirling in your hand and your seat neighbor, Nick, sitting a little too close to you. So trying to listen to what your english teacher is saying is getting increasingly harder as Nick is literally breathing down your neck. You tried to ignore it but when you could feel his arm almost pushing against yours you turned to him, giving him a questioning look, mouthing “what?”
He smirked and leaned into your ear. “Are you free this Saturday?” You raised an eyebrow, already scared of whats to come. “Why?” You asked as you try to refocus on your teacher. “There’s a party at my house, I want you there.” You closed your eyes at his words, taking a deep breath.
If there’s one thing you despise then it’s parties, but you always go anyways, because you don’t want to let anyone down. “I’ll be there,” you said simply, trying to stay as vague as possible. But your answer made him smile nonetheless, though were you already regretting it.
The day seemed to drag on way too slow. The same old stupid conversations, the same judging looks from your friends at people who didn’t deserve it and boys-talk. Day to day you grow more sick of this, but you endure.
“Endure and survive.”
“What?”
“Here,” Ellie said, showing Dina the comic she was reading. “I like the quote.” Dina just chuckled at her, shacking her head as she takes another bite of her sandwich, ignoring how Jesse is staring at it. “Because that’s what you do daily; enduring and surviving.”
“Don’t get all deep, Jesse.” Ellie put down the comic, leaning back against the tree. “God, summer is like my arch nemesis”, Ellie groaned, taking off her short sleeved flannel.
“Uhhh, free striptease from Ellie, everyone!” Dina teased and poked her wife-beater hugged side. “Only for you guys,” Ellie said while wiggling her eyebrows, making her friends laugh. She smiled and shook her head, but that quickly dropped as she heard those voices flowing through the air again. The sound of shoes that are way too high for school and unnecessary laughter.
“I wonder when their vocal cords give up from all their laughing,” Ellie said as she watches your friend group strut over the school grounds. Jesse chuckles, shaking his head as he crunches on his chips. “How’s your bio project with the little Barbie doll going anyway?” Dina asked as she leaned into Jesse, stealing one of his chips.
Ellie groaned, rolling her eyes and throwing her head back dramatically. “Don’t remind me. She said she wants to buy those dumb shrimp today and asked if I wanted to join her and get coffee, but I said I can’t. I honestly can’t stand her for more than a few minutes. Plus, I just know there was something more behind her invite, like some weird public humiliation ritual she and her friends planed out.”
“Oh, don’t be so negative, maybe she was just trying to be nice.” Dinas words were genuine, but quickly dismissed by Ellie. She’s totally convinced you’re some super villain and are out to get her.
“Yeah right, like she’d ever want something to do with me, the “dyke.”” Jesses padded her shoulder sympathetically and Dina shook her head, reaching for another one of Jesses chips.
“You’re just scared it’ll be like the last time.” That earned Dina a scowl from Ellie, but she threw her hands up defensively.
“Hey, I’m just telling the truth. You’re trying to convince yourself she the pure evil because you’re scared of letting anyone else in.”
“You’re scared of falling in love with her,” Jesse added, giving Ellie a taunting look. She threw her granola bar wrapper at him and stuck out her tongue like a child.
“Never in a million years would I fall for her. She constantly stinks off floral perfume, smiles too much and treats people that aren’t her friends like shit.”
“She invited you to get coffee with you, that doesn’t sound like she’s treating you like shit.”
Ellie just scoffed at Jesse again, rolling her eyes and stuffing her things into her bag. “Like that makes a difference. I can’t stand her, period.”
“Sounds like we hit a nerve there,” Dina said, picking up the wrapper and throwing it back at Ellie.
“You didn’t do shit. I just want to do this project well and not be best buddies with y/n. But if I suddenly start turning into a pink marshmallow with glitter on, then be aware that she put a spell on me.” Her friends just laughed, pulling her to the ground and making her join a group hug.
You sat with your group on the stone ping-pong tables, just listing to them as they talked, throwing in your own little comments here and there. But your mind was distracted, watching Ellie and her friends from afar.
It was save to say that you were jealous. Jealous of how close they were. Jealous of how free they seemed to be and jealous of how they actually knew each other.
But your thoughts were quickly disturbed by Jennie squeezing your cheeks and making you look at her. “Are you listening?”
“What?” You asked and they all laughed, making you smile in confusion. As Jennie let go of your face you could still feel her long nails against your skin.
“About Nicks party this Saturday, we were planning to get ready at my place, do some pre game and then take an uber to his place,” Chloe explained, chewing obnoxiously on her gum. You nodded, agreeing to the idea, even if a little reluctant.
“Sounds good,” you said and the others squeal. “Deal it is!” Dana said, taking a sip from her humongous Stanley. The conversation went on, the girls talking about what they’re going to wear and which boy they’re going to get with. You just zoned out again, your eyes slowly tracking back to Ellie and her friends, watching Ellie throw a wrapper at her friend. A small involuntary smile crept onto your lips.
“Whatcha smiling about?” Michelle teased, poking your side with a smirk. With a shake of your head and a confused “huh” sound you look at her, making them all laugh again.
Thankfully coming up with random excuses was your talent. “I was just uhm, I was thinking about getting a tongue piercing. What do you guys think?” Some interested sounds went through the group and quickly a passionate conversation started, on which piercing was best and what piercing suited who and how Chloe’s belly button piercing was healing.
You were just thankful for them not catching onto your lie. But this time instead of staring off into space (at Ellie and her friends) you actually join the conversation. “I was thinking a daith would be good, to help with my migraines.”
Maybe it wasn’t too bad. Maybe they were all just girls. Or maybe you’re trying to convince yourself that you don’t need anything else than this.

୨ৎ———୨ৎ
Mondays are ought to be boring and long, the time seems to drag on even if you try your best to distract yourself from the yawn that is called school. So you’re more than lucky to be sitting here, in your last period of today.
Your friends laughing and gossiping around you, nudging you as boys look over. Your own lipstick painted lips are pulled into a smile, acrylic nails tapping against the table with one hand and resting your chin onto the other.
People stared, some didn’t care and others envied you. It’s what being popular is all about; being envied. You’re beautiful, you’re charming and you’re wealthy. What isn’t there to envy?
But others judged too, not envying you, but despising you. Others are Ellie. Who sat in the back of the class, seeing how you twirled your fingers in your perfect hair and how your legs crossed beneath your pink dress.
The sight of you and your friend group made Ellie feel weird, like a deep pit in her stomach. Not because of jealousy, but because of irritation and disgust. She hated how shallow you seemed to be, how you didn’t care about anyone who seems to be less than you. How your friends didn’t seem to shy away from stomping on others, degrading them and calling them things that would surly punish them in the after life.
It’s rarely that the sound of the bell ringing, and announcing the start of the class, made Ellie happy, but this time it does, because it means the laughter died down and the attention was on the teacher.
Ellie didn’t know how to feel about biology, it’s interesting sure, but nothing could top physics for her. Probably because she had her head all up in the stars. Literally. If you asked her any space related question, she would know the answer. Though, the same goes for dinosaurs, but she was rather low key about that one, since she’s grown… well a little embarrassed of that. Though nothing was stopping her from wearing dinosaur underwear, since no one got to see them anyways.
The teacher started talking and Ellie was already just doodling in the side of her notes. But something suddenly caught her attention the word “group project” and the collective groans amongst the students. The teacher just laughed, almost like an evil protagonist in a kids show.
“You guys get to choose the topic,” cheers were audible throughout the class, “but I will be choosing the partners!” Now cheers were turned into groans again.
Ellie just sat back, not caring about the aspect of random partners. Honestly, she was actually quite glad she didn’t have to choose by herself, because non of her friends were in this class with her. But when Mr. Fitz started calling the names, one by one, she still got nervous. “Y/n L/n and…” he looked around, deciding on whom should join you. Since Ellie wasn’t called yet, all she could do was hope he wasn’t going to pick her, because she certainly was not in the mood for doing the whole project by herself.
“Ellie Williams!” He then called out, to her luck. You turned around to look at Ellie, shooting her a smile, but Ellie just slouched down in her seat, wishing to disappear completely.
Your friends around you laughed, pocking your side and saying things like you could just lean back now and give Ellie all the work. You laughed it off, shaking your head. “You could probably ask her to do it in exchange of a kiss,” Chloe said and jokingly made a kissy face. “That dyke would probably do anything for a pretty girl like you,” she added. You kept on smiling and shaking your head, even though you felt terrible at what she had said, but are too scared to turn around to Ellie and even mouth her an apology. Instead you just sat there, letting the words hit yourself deeper than you wanted them to and just endure it.
Mr. Fitz started explaining the expectations for the project and the duration. Four whole weeks. Soon enough everyone should take their seat next to their assigned partner, to discuss their topic. So you took your stuff, making your way next to Ellie in the back. “Hi,” you said, showing your pearly whites through a sickeningly sweet smile as you put down your bag, which jingled with charms, and laid down your note book, all pretty in pink.
Ellie watched you unpack, trying her best not to roll her eyes at you. Though you could definitely feel her subtle annoyance and honestly, you can’t even judge her for it. If you were her, you’d definitely feel annoyed at yourself too. She probably thought you were some evil bitch. “So…” you said, dragging out the “o”. Ellie breathed out a long breath through her nose, sitting up in her seat probably.
“Any ideas for our topic?” You asked, clicking your pen open and looking right at Ellie. She shrugged, her eyes fixed onto her empty papers. “Maybe, how plants grow under different light conditions?” She said, not looking at you. You hummed, writing it down on your notes, with your handwriting all neat and perfect, right beneath “Biology Project Ideas” written in pink. “Or, how effective are different hand sanitizers or soaps?”
“What about…” you thought for a moment, tapping your pen against your chin. Ellie groaned quietly, running a hand through her hair. “Let’s just do it like your friends said, I’ll do the work and you lean back.” Her proposal confused you and you immediately shake your head.
“No! I’m not going to take advantage of you like that. I want to do this project too.”
“Do you? I honestly don’t mind doing it alone. I’d rather that, than constantly being annoyed by you.” The last part was mumbled, but the truth. Even if she didn’t actually want to do this project alone, she would truly rather have that than having to explain every single step to you.
You ignored her words, shaking your head again and furrowing your eyebrows slightly, making the pink glitter on your eyelids almost disappear. “I’m not stupid, you know.” That made Ellie scoff and you just looked at her, still furrowing your brows. You were used to people thinking you’re a dumb little bimbo, but you’re on a mission to proof her wrong.
“We’re going to do this project together, whether you like it or not.” Your voice was firmer than intended, which just made Ellie roll her eyes again. With every single word that came out of your mouth, Ellie grew more and more annoyed. Not because of what you said, but because it’s you who’s’ saying it. She hated you, as simple as that.
“I was thinking: How different salt levels affect small water animals. You know, watching small creatures living in different levels of salt water. Seeing how they live in those circumstances.” Your words caught Ellie’s attention, having not expected of you to say something… intelligent.
“That would be quite complex to do, recourses and all.”
“We’ll use Brine shrimp, they’re not that expensive and easy to track. Plus, this project will definitely give us a good grade.” You shrugged, writing down your own idea. Ellie hummed as she watched you write it down, surprised with your actual knowledge. “Fine, we’ll do that then,” she said and you smiled at her, nodding and underlining the idea on your paper.
You continued to make the plans for the project, who gets what and where to keep the shrimp. “I can keep them in my room,” you said. “I don’t mind, I know how to take care of them, I’ve got Betta fish.” Ellie raised an eyebrow at you, chuckling at your admission. “Didn’t peg you for a fish gal.” You laughed and wrote down all the things you needed for the project.
It was surprising for Ellie, seeing you actually being nice to her. Though, she still didn’t trust you. That’s what people do, being nice to others for a good grade, you’d be foolish if you weren’t.
“You can just come over to my place very two days or so and then we can work on the protocol and essay together.”
Soon enough the bell rang, announcing the end of the class, making everyone get up and gather their things. “Alright, here’s my number, text me and I can give you my address.” You quickly scribbled down your number on a piece of paper, handing it to Ellie before packing up your stuff and getting ready to leave the bio lap with your friends.
Chloe wrapped an arm around you, laughing at some stupid joke Michelle made. “And how’d it go? Is she doing the work for you? Did you have to send her nudes to do so?” Michelle asked from the side, making Chloe laugh loudly. Ellie just watched from behind, her frown already making its way back onto her face as you just laughed along with them.
There was this pit again, the feeling of hatred and disgust. It’s so strange of them to assume the worst of her just because she’s a lesbian. Not that she wasn’t used to it, being talked about this way, but it never got better. And the way you just stood there, not making a single move to stop it. Yes, it did make you seem evil. And she knew this project would be hell, because spending more time with you ment getting closer, even if it’s not purposefully.
It happened to her before and she’s scared it’ll happen again.
Her eyes followed you and your friends out the door, a sigh leaving her as she was the only one left in the bio lap. Of course it had to be her, she always gets that lucky. Now she just had to figure out how to do this damn biology project, without any hate crime getting committed. Maybe she just has to actually try. But she knew it was no good. She had tried before, trying to get along with the “popular” people, but it ended horribly.
She was foolish for believing that Cat actually wanted something to do with her. Last year she was in basically the same predicament as now; being paired up with one of the popular girls for a project. Surprisingly enough everything was going fine, her and Cat seemed to really get along. She was funny and seemed to actually want to spend time with her. Then she kept coming over, wanting to be alone with Ellie. She was touchy and nice, how was she supposed to think she wasn’t feeling like Ellie? Because Ellie started catching feelings, hard and fast. Which ended in one evening, where she actually got the courage to do something, to kiss her. Well the next day the whole school knew and that was the started of pesky bullying. Slurs and dirty looks being thrown her way, the girls wanting her to change somewhere else in PE. Yeah, it wasn’t fun. Even if it cooled down now, the bullying never really stopped.
She slung her backpack over her shoulder and walked out, making her way through the halls, still hearing your laughter echo. Thankfully she’d be home soon.
