the elements and truth

sun and mercury

Air abhors lying, but that doesn’t mean it tells the truth easily. Evasion is a sign there’s a truth it doesn’t want to let out. Air can twist a question, an answer, a meaning without outright lying. Cunning with words, statements from Air must be read between the lines. Don’t assume. Stay sharp.

Fire would not think to lie, but that doesn’t mean it intrinsically values the truth. Fire is neither respectful, nor gentle with it. Fire wields truth like a weapon in the arsenal, a tool in the shed. It can be discarded easily, but why set aside something so useful? Don’t ask for the truth from Fire, unless you are willing to accept it.

Earth makes its own truth, but that doesn’t mean its conclusions are false. Rather, Earth creates the truth by force of will. The truth is malleable, workable. What Earth says comes true if they wish it. Earth does not so much lie as change the truth. Believe Earth. Earth will make it so.

Water believes the truth is relative, but their belief is not groundless. Believing in some things can make them more true, can bring them to life. There are half-truths that lead to greater truths. There are lies that are wisdom. Ideas can be understood that are neither true nor false. Worry less about the truth with Water. Let it fill the cracks between.

aquarius, libra and gemini

to many, the air signs may come across as preoccupied, detached, or aloof. 

unlike water and earth signs, stability in lifestyle, love and relationships, is not something an air sign finds crucial. This may be hard to understand for some, but it’s important to recognize an air sign’s love of change and and progression.

where many other signs concern theirselves with what is, air signs may ask what could be? or what would be?… or what should be? 

for gemini– we see a sign that feeds on new pursuits. this is a sign with an ever changing energy, one that becomes bored with the cold and dreary, and needs progression, growth, and challenge, both by the world, and other individuals. when pursuing a gemini, the number one rule is to keep them curious. keep their mind stimulated. you cannot demand their affection (this is true with all the air signs) rather, allow them to see what is special and unique to you, and if they’re interested, they will make it known.

for libra– the idea of something is always better than the thing itself. the libra is a true idealist and a true romantic. they are always concerned with “what could be” instead of “what is.” not the most practical person you’ll ever meet. a libra is very easily drawn to beauty and excitement like a fly. it is very easy for them to become bored by the cold and dreary. the libra does care for details. little gestures, tactful choices, words always matter. to pursue a libra, convince them you can offer them a life out of a movie. but you must deliver and you must be persistent. flirt with their mind, and you will have their heart.

for aquarius-- alot is always going on behind closed doors. unlike libra, aquarius is one of the most unromantic signs on the zodiac. don’t confuse this with being unloving or unaffectionate. the aquarius can be very loving, but it doesn’t come easy. this is an independent sign that will not commit to anything without knowing the other person’s intentions. so if you’re interested in an aquarius, you must be cool about it. take things slow. rely on good conversation and adventures. this is the most progressive sign so they will not be turned away by spontaneous decisions and ideas. validate that you are interested in the aquarius by being witty, social, adventurous, and easy going. 

remember, above all else, that air signs are intellectual signs. they are aroused by the mind above all else. these are an analytical group of people who love to fantasize about the future. so much so, that they are not always too concerned about what’s going on in the present.

How do you know if a scene is too dialogue heavy, and what can you do to change it?

You read it out loud and if it’s

repetitive

redundant

unnatural 

out-of-character

awkward/creepy/silly/boring when the scene doesn’t call for it

a mouthful; the other characters are just waiting for them to shut up

hard to remember where they are and what they’re doing besides talking

clear they don’t even need to be talking that much anyway (especially if it’s a stealthy, sneaky scene which seems obvious but apparently some writers need to be reminded, mkay)

then the scene probably needs help. You change it by reading it out loud (or listen to it being read out loud) and cutting/revising/adding the parts your ear hears as problematic. If you can, read it with another person.

How do you go about researching something you know nothing about? I had an idea I’m really exited about, a novel about figure skating. However I know next to nothing about the topic, and I’m not even sure where to start. (Not asking about specific research, just wondering about researching something you know little about in general)

Most subjects can be searched as “how to write___” or “writing a character that___” and key phrases like those.

Some subjects are best searched using only terms typical to the subject: medical, scientific, and historical subjects often fit this category.

Fantasy Guide to Addressing Nobility

It can be hard to remember how to properly address your noble or royal characters when writing a fantasy court. Here is a quick guide:

1. King/Queen:

Usually addressed as either “Your Grace” or “Your Majesty”. Consort (married to a ruler and not reigning in their own right) can be addressed the same. Sire or Madam can be used also.

2. Prince/Princess:

They are addressed as “Your Highness”. They are NEVER addressed the same as a King or Queen

3. Duke/Duchess:

These are addressed with “Your Grace”. This was a common term also used by royalty before Henry VIII got to big for his codpiece.

4. Earl (Count)/Countess:

Are almost never referred as the “Earl of Narnia” but “Lord Narnia”.

5. Lord/Lady:

An easy one. They are called “My Lord” or “My Lady”.

6. Emperor/Empress:

These may be equal to a King/Queen for status but the have a grander title. They are only addressed as “Your Imperial Highness/Majesty”
