All eyes are on the government. After three dizzying years of the Trump administration, the world was dealt a once-in-three-generations pandemic

Income inequality, institutionalized racism, and all-consuming capitalism came under closer scrutiny than time had previously permitted. Now more than ever (a phrase which seems to be used now more than ever,) voters are energized to exercise their vocal civic duties.

Brittanye Morris is a politician who works for those people.

Morris is currently running unopposed to become the Democratic District Court Judge for Texas’s 333rd District. As governmental change has permeated the popular lexicon more intensely, citizens have become more aware of the crucial role local government plays in shaping the realities of daily life. In her seat, Morris will oversee civil cases — disputes between citizens and organizations, like foreclosures.

Texans for Lawsuit Reform, a “non-profit research organization that provides objective analysis of the challenges presented by the Texas civil justice system,” notes the difficulties of this system which its participants inherit. In The Texas Judicial System: Recommendations for Reform, the organization writes that district courts, “which are the trial courts of general jurisdiction, sit in a spider web of districts having overlapping geographic boundaries. Often a single county is in two or three district court districts, with each of those districts being comprised of a different group of counties. This knotty trial-court structure is arcane and inefficient, and it invites forum shopping.”

The organization continues, “Among the structure’s many failings is the inability to effectively handle complex civil cases, which require significant and specialized judicial resources. While the federal court system and the court systems in other major states have special courts or procedures to handle complex or specialized litigation, Texas does not. Consequently, complex litigation in Texas often is conducted in trial courts lacking the knowledge or resources to handle that litigation.”

Morris brings fresh eyes, grit, and a wealth of life experience to this complicated position. Her website states that she is a Houston native “born and raised in a middle class household.” Her mother was employed as an educator in the public school system, is father is a retired police lieutenant. As a child, Morris was very active, participating in everything from debate to girl scouts. “I grew up in a very diverse area,” Morris told me. She was was a conduit to this variety, diversifying her interests and activities to occupy every arena.

Morris earned her Bachelor’s in government history (fact check) from University of Houston, and then a juris doctorate from from Thurgood Marshall School of Law at the prestigious Texas Southern University. “I guess I gravitated to it because it made sense,” Morrise mused, contemplating her interest in the major. “There’s a certain continuity to history, like math. It gave you a sense of understanding about backgrounds and about the formation of things. Government segued nicely into that because so much of history is surrounding the government or governmental structures.”

Her driving spirit mixed with her intellect allowed her to overcome the adversities she faced in achieving her educational goals. Morris recalled, “I actually attempted to work during law school the first year, even though it's not recommended. I nearly failed out.” While she knew her parents wouldn’t let her fail, they pushed her to earn her achievements. Morris financed her own way through law school by working at local post office for five hours most evenings.

“I realized somewhere in there that I really did like to litigate,” she recalled of the grindstone era. She learned that she liked property law, and began interning at a community college’s in-house counsel's section. From there, she worked for a bankruptcy trustee.

“During this time, he didn't have an opening for another staff attorney,” Morris intimated. In need of funds for her post-grad life, Morris took a job at the local attorney general’s office, (fact check) a position which she likened to traffic court, but collecting property taxes. “I would have stayed there, but there was no room for upward mobility,” she said. “You’re not going to get the trial experience, or you're not going to get actual litigation experience.”

“Obviously, you're not the good guy in this situation,” she conceded of the role, though she did gain an intimate knowledge of how officials can help their communities. “You have the ability to inform people to go seek counsel, or you have the ability to allow them resets that may very well save the home their grandmothers or whomever worked for.”

“I really feel like representation matters, and certain voices have been marginalized,” Morris said. Having built her own career of her own accord, she possesses all the grit and effort that endeavor requires. A life like this generally proves adventurous, experience-rich. Morris believes her background lends a core competency to her legal expertise. Rather than choosing to immediately foreclose a home, she can instead allow defendants more opportunity to recover — more time to explore options and acquire attorneys.

“I’ve been through situations to where you're working the best you can, and for whatever reason, your ends don't meet,” Morris stated, referencing her experiences working through law school. One time, she returned to her apartment to find her internet turned off. Assessing her expenses, she decided she could comfortably pay the bill. The next night, she returned home to find her electricity shut off. “That’s a different perspective than someone who had a life where things were afforded to them. You can understand the struggle,” she said. Morris asserted that judges must rule solely based on the law, and “your personal biases or prejudices do not come in, but you never leave your experiences at the door.”

Morris waited for her opportune moment to make a move on the position. “You want to be the change you want to see, of course, but to not do that in a strategic way does a disservice,” she explained. This year felt ripe with its intense focus on politics. “In our community in particular, more and more people are wanting more representation,” she said.

The hopeful political upstart faced obstacles straight away, butting heads with rigid local political structures by opposing the incumbent, a fellow Democrat. “Running against an incumbent from your same party is never a popular choice,” she allowed, matter-of-factly. Cut off from their support, she added that “You’re not going to get support from large donors or large people, because effectively you're the underdog. Very few people are willing to bet on an underdog fresh out of the gate.”

Instead, she went grassroots, an approach which made more ideological sense to her anyways. “What people tend to forget so often is that it's your community, your constituency, that gives you that seat,” Morris remarked. “It is not yours. It belongs to the citizens and the community in which you serve.”

Morris began attending town halls and civic club meetings across the county. She went to the neighborhood clubs and visited different religious organizations. “The courts are tools for the people to access justice. So in a true sense of that, then why not go into the community?” she asked.

Some people might grow jaded from opposing an opponent so imposing as their own political party, but Morris confidently assured me that she emerged from the experience with her optimism and excitement for government intact. “You can be cynical and say, ‘government sucks.’ What practical purpose is that gonna serve?” she asked. “What I took out of it is, the community will rally and people will support.”

As communities strive to establish diverse representation in their democratic systems, Morris noted, “It isn’t limited to people of African descent… Diversity is just that: diverse. We should strive to have all kinds of people on there. Our county is very diverse, very populous, so there needs to be representation of all kinds on the bench.” She brings her own experience and goals into the equation. As a District Judge, Morris intends “to create a judiciary that's going to be open, accessible, and transparent.” She also has plans to work with high schools to host teen courts and encourage students to embrace their civic duties.

Though she’s overcome obstacles from financing to party opposition, no victory has been greater than the ones Morris can claim from her own internal battles. She noted that the academic difficulty of transitioning from undergraduate to law school inspired fears, at moments, about her own abilities. “It was a really eye opening experience to question myself, for the first time, in a real candid way. I had never had adversity when it came to learning, or adversity in school,” Morris explained. “I've learned that tomorrow will worry about itself. You just have to worry about today and hope you may get to tomorrow.”

After all the strife associated with law school, as she was working in her unfulfilling post-grad role and struggling to make ends meet, Morris was also studying for the dreaded bar exam. Then she learned that she was suffering from stage four kidney failure. “Now you're studying for this bar. It's a three day test. And you're just like, ‘Oh, my gosh, what if I don't pass it?’” She recalled of her anxiety at the time. “I really had to compartmentalize everything and put all my effort into [the exam.]” Morris put the procedure off until after the bar, focusing everything she had on this final push. After passing the exam, she received her kidney transplant. “It wasn't easy by any stretch of the imagination,” she said, “but I think it's those trying times that really made me appreciate where I have gotten in life.”

I wonder how history will look back on this era. Sure, we’ll all remember the presidential elections of this past generation. Some might even remember the subtler conflicts — characters like Condoleeza Rice and James Comey and Mitch McConnell. But increasingly, as engaged citizens adopt the pragmatic approach to change which Morris has instituted in her own life, society is shifting its focus to the foot soldiers — those who run government’s daily machinations. In order for sweeping change to take shape and take root, our government needs an infusion of authenticity in the form of real people wanting to make a tangible difference. Morris is less talk and more action. She moves from a place of informed balance, equidistant from head and heart, but marrying the unique fires of both. Applied to our present context, this is the way our government was truly intended to function.

Upon contemplating how history might remember her campaign and judgeship, Morris decided, “Only history can dictate that. When you think about like the Great's of our time, they weren't that at the time.” While she doesn't consider herself the equivalent to a Malcolm or a Martin, she did note, “It wasn't until long after them leaving this earth that they both became historical icons.” As always, she focuses her energy where it’s feasibly useful instead. “For me, it's very important just to live in a way that I'll be proud of and my children will be proud of.”

While her career has proved momentous in its completely individual way, Morris believes the type of success she now enjoys is accessible to anyone, provided they’re prepared for a non-linear route. “Be open,” she espoused. “That’s the biggest advice I can give to anybody. I think we get so set on where we want to go that we aren't open to any opportunities and possibilities. It’s those opportunities, those possibilities and those twists and turns, that get you where you ultimately need to be.” Morris’s own life has already taken her so far, and she hasn't even graduated from her twenties. She is a force to watch, a flame ready to multiply.

THE BEST ROUTE TO THE FAMOUS RAINBOW MOUNTAINS OF PERU

Peru has some of the most incredible landscapes on our glorious planet, and some of the most impressive are the rainbow mountains in Cusco.

The first to be ‘discovered’ was Vinicunca, also known as Rainbow Mountain, whose iconic image is spread all over the internet and attracts thousands of tourists each year. It wasn’t alone, though.

Since then, two other mountains have come to the attention of locals and then the rest of the world. These are the rainbow mountains in Palccoyo and another named Pallay Punchu.

Each mountain is just as impressive as the other and they all offer a little something different. In this article, we’ll provide you with a description of each and tell you the best route to take to the rainbow mountains of Peru. You can use the information to help you decide which to visit or plan how you’ll get to them.

OVERVIEW

This is the most popular of all the rainbow mountains and is the most impressive. It towers over you when you get up close and is truly stunning. The hike is tough as there’s a steep ascent up to 5,200 masl, so the altitude will also have a big effect.

You’ll see wildlife along the way, like llamas and alpacas, and also the astounding rolling hills. When you visit Vinicunca, you also get the chance to add on a trip to the Mars-like Red Valley, which is an excellent sight to see indeed.

THE BEST ROUTE TO VINICUNCA

You can visit this mountain with a tour group or alone. You need to wake up around 3 am if you want to beat the big crowds. You need to begin by making your way from Cusco to a small village called Cusipata, which takes around 2 hours.

From here, you need to get to Pampachiri. If you go with a tour group all transport will be included, but by yourself, you’ll need to find separate vehicles to each place.

At the community, you’ll need to buy your ticket if you haven’t already, and will then start the three and a half hour round trip to Vinicunca and back. You should only spend around 30-45 minutes at the top to make sure you get back down to the vehicles before it’s too late.

Extra Note: You can also visit the Vinicunca rainbow mountain on one of the Ausangate trek routes. When you do this, you arrive before all the other tourists and get a fantastic private view.

PALCCOYO

HIGHLIGHTS

· Get to see more than one outstanding rainbow mountain.

· Visit the Checacupe bridge.

· Enjoy an off-the-beaten-path route.

· Take a more relaxing hike along a flat route that a person of any fitness level can complete.

· Observe flora and fauna only found in the Andean mountains.

OVERVIEW

This is a far less-visited rainbow mountain and you’ll likely only see 20 or 30 other people all day. If you like to avoid crowds, this is an excellent option. You’ll also get a fantastic view of not one, but various rainbow-colored mountains.

Along the hike, you’ll see small villages, Andean wildlife, and some incredible scenery. The hike itself is relatively easy to complete as most of the trail is flat. You’ll be heading up to 4,900 masl and the duration of the walk there and back is an hour and a half.

THE BEST ROUTE TO PALCCOYO

You can also visit this mountain by yourself or with a tour. Whichever way you do it, you’ll likely follow the most common and best route. After getting up early, you’ll need to board transport that takes you to the district of Combapata. Before you get to the village, you have to turn left at the Checacupe bridge.

The same car will then take you another hour and a half to a car park from where you’ll start the 40-50 minute walk to the mountain. People of any fitness level can enjoy this hike as it’s short and flat. Once you’ve spent all the time you want at the top, it’s time to head back to the vehicle.

PALLAY PUNCHU

OVERVIEW

This wonderful mountain is visited by very few tourists and is truly breathtaking. It really looks like one of the beautiful ponchos that the Andean people are often seen wearing, which is why it also has this intriguing name.

On this hike, you’ll reach 4,700 masl and there are a few difficult stretches. You’ll get to see some stunning parts of the Andes, including the mysterious Langui-Layo Lagoon, sharp mountains, and valleys of red earth. Once again, you can go by yourself or with a tour operator.

THE BEST ROUTE TO PALLAY PUNCHU

From the city of Cusco, you’ll need to make your way to the town of Sicuani. Then, you’ll need to catch a car to Layo. Once you get to this small town, there are a few ways you can get to Pallay Punchu.

Some of the routes are extreme and can be a little dangerous. For this particular mountain, we highly recommend going with a guide who’s an expert on the trails. You’ll be able to spend some time at the top and around the lagoon before you head back down.

To maximize your experience and ensure a great day, we recommend taking these tips into consideration before and during your day out.

TAKE PRECAUTIONS REGARDING THE ALTITUDE

Remember that you’ll be heading up to a high altitude on any of these hikes. For this reason, you need to take lots of care before and during the trip to avoid feeling ill or finding things too challenging.

When you book your tour or plan the route you’re going to take, make sure you make time to spend at least 2-3 days in the city of Cusco beforehand. This way, your body will have time to acclimate properly and you’re much less likely to experience symptoms of altitude sickness. Unfortunately, when people don’t acclimate as they should, they sometimes need to cancel their trip to the mountains.

GET SOME PRACTICE IN

Before you come to Peru, we highly recommend partaking in other one day hikes to get your body prepared. You can also spend some time exploring Cusco by foot before you head on one of the more difficult hikes to help your body become accustomed to exertion at this altitude.

DRINK PLENTY OF WATER

At high altitudes, it’s much easier to become dehydrated. Your body is working harder and you’re also much closer to the sun, which can also make you need to drink more water. Keeping your body hydrated is essential up in the mountains.

PROTECT YOURSELF FROM THE SUN

You are much closer to the sun up here, and you can get sunburnt in minutes, even if the sun is behind the clouds. Make sure you protect your skin from the UV rays by using a sun hat and wearing factor 50 or more sunscreen. You also need to make sure your eyes are protected with sunglasses.

PLAN AHEAD

We highly recommend planning your trip in advance. With this guide, you should be able to get a good idea of which mountain you prefer to visit. Book in advance to avoid disappointment at the last minute, which can happen, particularly in high season.

If you’re going to do one of the routes by yourself, make sure you’ve worked out exactly how you’re going to get from one place to another and plan your timing. You need to make sure you leave early for any of the mountains because it can be very hard to find transport back later in the day.

RAINBOW MOUNTAINS FAQS

WHEN’S THE BEST TIME OF YEAR TO VISIT THE RAINBOW MOUNTAINS?

The best time of year to visit any one of these mountains is in April and May or September and October. During these months, there are fewer tourists in Cusco, so this means there’ll be fewer at the sites, especially Vinicunca.

June, July, and August are very busy regarding visitors, however, Palccoyo and Pallay Punchu will still be relatively quiet so these are also good months to go to either of those.

From November to March, there’s rain most days and this can make the trails slippery. February is particularly wet and you need to have lots of waterproof gear and boots or shoes with very good grip.

WHAT’S THE TEMPERATURE LIKE AT THE RAINBOW MOUNTAINS?

At the top of the mountains, the temperatures can get very chilly, especially if it’s windy. When you’re walking you’ll get warm but will soon cool down once you’re standing still. It’s best to wear plenty of layers to take off and put on when needed and take a woolly hat, scarf, and gloves.

Vinicunca gets the closest because it’s at a higher altitude and close to the snowy mountain Ausangate.

AUSANGATE TREK – COMPLETE GUIDE TO THE HIGHEST TREK IN PERU

There are plenty of routes in Cusco that make a great alternative to the world-famous Inca Trail. If you compare them all, the Ausangate Trek is the highest and probably toughest, too. However, it’s also the most rewarding when it comes to scenery and natural beauty.

You’ll enjoy a large loop around the astounding and very imposing Ausangate mountain on an off-the-beaten-path trek that not many tourists venture on. This trek is perfect for those who like to get away from the crowds and enjoy a real adventure and challenge to see a lesser-visited part of Peru.

OVERVIEW

The Ausangate Trek follows a trail at a very high altitude, and most of the route is over 4,000 masl. The mountain itself is 6,384 masl and the trail goes all around the mountain and tends to start and end in Tinki or Upis.

There are a few variations of the trek, and we’ll go into more detail about them further on, but 5 days is the average and most hikers will cross the Palomani Pass and the Q’ampa Pass, both above 5,000 masl. You might head over more if you opt for a longer trek.

The trek is challenging but very rewarding, so all your efforts are really worth it. AUSANGATE TREK AT A GLANCE

· Difficulty: This trek is very tough in parts, especially when you head up to the highest altitudes. The terrain is mountainous and the air is thin, meaning you have to walk slowly and steadily. This trek isn’t a good idea for beginners and acclimatization is a necessity.

· Altitude: Nearly all the route is over 4,000 masl and you’ll cross at least 2 paths over 5,000 masl.

· Temperature: You can expect low temperatures of -15°C and even less in the evening. This is due to the high altitude.

· Weather: The climate is cold up here, and during the wet season (Nov to March) the trail can become slippery and muddy. However, in the dry season (Apr to Oct) it will be hard and dry.

HISTORY AND CULTURE

The mountain of Ausangate was of great importance in Inca mythology and was seen as a God along with many other of the tall mountains in the area.

Quyllur Rit’i is a festival that attracts thousands of locals each year who go on a pilgrimage and dance up in the mountains about 20 km north of Ausangate at Qullqipunku mountain. It’s always one week before the Corpus Christi feast.

GEOGRAPHY

Ausangate mountain is in the Vilcanota mountain range in the Andes in Peru. It’s in the department of Cusco and about 100 km southeast of the city of Cusco. The elevation is 6,384 masl and it can be seen from the city on a clear day.

WHAT MAKES IT SO SPECIAL?

This trek is fantastic for those who are interested in seeing how small communities live in such a remote part of the country. You’ll be able to interact with them and spend time with the people there. It’s like no other trek in the region due to the sheer altitude and feelings of isolation from the rest of the world. It’s perfect to get away from daily life and enjoy a real adventure in the mountains. And, of course, the Ausangate mountain is extremely impressive.

WHAT WILL YOU SEE ALONG THE WAY?

This trek is a little different from the majority in Cusco where you see many Inca archaeological sites; you don’t see any here. Instead, you’ll get the most glorious views of the landscape, see a lot of native flora and fauna, and see locals working and living off the land in these remote parts of the country.

You’ll see some amazing examples of Mother Nature’s work including Ausangate mountain itself, Rainbow Mountain, and some stunning lakes and glaciers.

CLIMATE

Remember that on this trek you’re going to be at a very high altitude, so you should expect to feel chilly most of the time. The air is usually still but rain can be a little sporadic and it’s always unpredictable when it comes to the weather.

WHEN’S THE BEST TIME OF YEAR TO VISIT?

The best time of year to do the Ausangate trek is during the dry season (April to October). This way, you don’t risk falling or slipping on wet, muddy trails and you won’t get rained on, probably. However, sometimes it might still shower, so you always need a raincoat. The skies will be clear and you’ll get awesome views of the landscape and Ausangate mountain.

WHAT TREKKING OPTIONS ARE THERE?

We’ve already mentioned there are various trips available, but let’s take a look at the 4 day Ausangate and Rainbow Mountain Route as an example of what to expect. This is one of the most popular trails to visit Ausangate and Vinicunca.

Day 1: Cusco / Upis / Upis Thermal Baths

On day one you’ll begin by heading to Urcos, the capital of the Quispicanchi province, and then continue to Upis (3,799 masl / 12,464 fasl), where you begin walking. You’ll see the Ausangate glacier right away and be swept away by emotions, meet local people in traditional clothing and see herds of llamas and alpacas along the way, have lunch at the Upis thermal baths (4,198 masl / 13,776 fasl) and where we’ll spend the first nice. You can enjoy the afternoon relaxing in the springs and enjoy the surrounding landscape.

Day 2: Upis Thermal Baths / Abra Arapa / Pukaqocha Camp

Today, you’ll begin walking to Abra Arapa in the company of Ausangate. You can observe the incredible landscape and maybe even see a condor or two in mid-flight. You’ll visit the lagoons of Yanaqocha (black lagoon) and Pukaqocha (red lagoon) and see several waterfalls, too.

You’ll be spending the night in Pukaqocha, so once here you can rest and explore the stunning surroundings and enjoy the lakes.

Day 3: Camp Pukaqocha / Abra de Pukaqocha / Camp Ananta

Day 3 is an exciting one. You’ll be heading to the Pukaqocha Pass (5,050 masl / 16,571 fasl) and get the most wonderful views of the mountain range and colorful lakes. You’ll then head down slowly to camp and take in the landscape, snap plenty of shots, and see plenty more llamas and alpacas.

Day 4: Ananta Camp / Rainbow Mountain / Quesiuno / Cusco

It’s the last day and you’ll be making your way to Vinicunca, or Rainbow Mountain before all the tourists get there. Enjoy the stunning view of the multicolored mountain and then head back to Cusco to your hotel.

WHAT TO TAKE

Use this packing list when you’re getting ready to leave for the trek to make sure you have everything you need to take with you. There’s no going back once you’re high up in the mountains.

· Tent – invest in a top-quality tent that isn’t likely to leak if it rains or tears in strong winds. You also want a model that’s quick and easy to put up and takedown.

· Sleeping bag – you need a sleeping bag that can resist very low temperatures to keep you warm on chilly mountain nights.

· Sleeping mat – if you’re a regular camper, you’ll know that the ground isn’t comfortable, so an easy-to-roll-up mat is essential. Opt for an inflatable mattress for more comfort.

· Thermal underwear – you’ll need it at this altitude to stop the wind from getting to your bones.

· Thin layers – we recommend thin layers for shirts, pants, and anything else so you can take them off and put them back on as your temperature changes.

· Thick socks – if your feet are cold, your whole body will feel the chill. Keep them wrapped up warm.

· Hiking boots/shoes – you need some quality footwear to help you walk on the mountainous terrain and to stop any slips and falls. We recommend worn in shoes or boots because a new pair isn’t always comfy, to begin with.

· Sun gear – even though you’ll feel chilly, you’re very close to the sun, so it’s essential you use factor 50+ sunblock, sunglasses, and a hat.

· Good camera – this one is a bit of a no-brainer, but you’ll want to capture as much of your mountain adventure as possible, so an excellent quality camera or a phone with a high-quality one will do the job.

· Plenty of food – if you go with a company, you’ll have all your meals provided for you, but you’ll still need snacks. Think nuts, energy bars, dried fruit, etc, to keep your energy levels up. If you go alone, take lightweight options that are easy to carry.

AUSANGATE TREKKING TIPS

We’ve compiled some top tips to make sure your trip goes as smoothly as possible and to help you plan the best you can.

ACCLIMATIZATION

We cannot stress enough the importance of getting acclimatized when you’re going to walk at such a high altitude. Failure to do so could mean you suffer from altitude sickness and can’t continue or can’t start the hike, to begin with.

We recommend you get to Cusco a few days before your trek starts to help acclimate properly. Let your body adjust to the altitude by walking around the city and going on other one-day hikes first. Visiting Humantay Lake is a good option.

FITNESS

You do need to be relatively fit for this trek. Walking at high altitudes takes its toll on anyone, so the fitter you are the better your body should handle it. We suggest you start a small exercise routine every day before you come and enjoy some hikes over a few days back home before you come to Peru.

HYDRATION

Drinking enough water is absolutely essential. At high altitude, you’ll tire quickly and need water to recuperate energy. You’re also close to the sun, even if you feel cold, and this will dehydrate you further. You can become ill quickly up here when you don’t drink enough H2O.

CAMPING GEAR

Any equipment you take with you needs to be able to withstand cold temperatures that go much colder than 0°C. Use a thick sleeping bag and a tent that can withstand plenty of wind and rain should it appear.

NAVIGATION

If you plan on going alone on this trek, you’ll need to make sure you have an excellent map and reliable GPS. There’s little to no cell phone reception up in the mountains, and the last thing you want is to be stuck in the middle of nowhere with no one to help.

TRAVEL INSURANCE

When you plan to go on a trek like Ausangate, you must get travel insurance. If you want to travel with a tour operator, they likely won’t let you on the trip without it. Health care is also very expensive in Cusco, so in the unlikely event you were injured, you might need to spend the rest of your savings on recovery.

Carp Fishing – Return to Crayfish Pool

Many years ago, I had fished a lovely lake on the Kingsmead complex known as The Crayfish Pool. Most of the old historic fish have gone and they have been replaced by new stock. In recent years, whilst fishing the adjacent Island Lake, I had kept an eye on the little pool, and sometimes after packing up next door, I’d have a walk around. It was always as stunning as I used to remember, but many of the big snags had been removed, so in some ways the lake looked different. I did do a couple of nights one summer, without success, and I received some severe punishment, a thriving crayfish population!

I left it for a couple of years, but as the start of this year I got the ticket back, partly because I wanted somewhere more local in case of any lockdown travel restrictions. My other ticket was an hour and a half drive away, so at least it gave me the option of a quick local night too. My good friend Gavin had fished the lake off and on for a while and was a brilliant source of information about the place. Whilst dipping in and out between fishing The Island Lake, he had indeed caught most of the better residents in the pool. He even managed to brace the two biggest in one memorable February session, an awesome achievement! I had seen photos of the two biggest fish, and they were both impressive to say the least. I particularly liked the fish called SP, Lord of the Lake, and a brute of a mirror that was renowned for an arm aching fight! The more I learned, the more excited I got and I couldn’t wait to get back for another go.

My first trip back was an eventful one, as around mid-May I took a break from my Essex syndicate and scheduled a two night session in. The lake was nice and quiet when I arrived, and after a walk round I moved into a swim on the car park side of the lake. In all honesty, Gavin had told me that the fish called SP, did the bulk of its captures from that end. I knew I wasn’t going to fish the lake hard, week after week, so in an attempt to target that one, I planned to get into to that end of the lake, if possible on every trip, to increase the odds in my favour as much as possible. I knew of one spot close to the right-hand bank, a pronounced hump that came off the bottom in what is a deep lake, with areas going down to over 15 feet. These shallower spots were what I was after, and with little weed at that time of year, I wanted to fish on hard spots, rather than the silt which made up most of the bottom.

In other lakes I generally look for silt, but here I knew the fish preferred to feed on the gravel, which in turn wasn’t as attractive to the ravenous crayfish. With one rod sorted I looked for another spot, and was rewarded with a rock hard drop out to my left, but nice and close in. I had already decided to go in fairly heavily with bait, as I knew the crayfish would demolish a fair bit of it. I had put my favourite Essential K5 boilies through the crusher, and mixed that with some bloodworm pellets and hemp, which I hoped being small items would take longer for the crays to clear out. I also baited with K5 boiles in 12 and 16 mm sizes, and fished two artificial boilies soaked in Salami oil. Gavin had warned me of the crayfishes’ ability to remove baits, so I tied both boilies on with 20lb line rather than floss, and ditched the rig putty in favour of Heavy Covert Tungsten Sleeves. It was all looking good and I sat back reasonably confident.

Shortly after someone else arrived and went into a swim on my right-hand bank in the corner, which is supposed to be a margin only swim. However, several leads and baits landed right over me and I guessed the angler in there hadn’t read that rule! There wasn’t much I could do except pack up early the following morning and leave. I wasn’t really feeling the love for it as much as I had hoped!

From then on, I travelled each week to the Essex syndicate, and I really began to get into my fishing on there. I was lucky to be able to string two night sessions together and whilst I could do that I could take the longer journey, and have a decent amount of time to get things going on there.

In August I had a family holiday, and on getting back with everyone still be off work and school it was nice to spend days at home together. I gave fishing a complete miss for a while and enjoyed the break. Knowing I could do a couple of single nights, I thought it would be a good time to head back over to the Cray, as since May I hadn’t heard anything about it, or even been over there at all. I dug out my artificial baits and prepared a load of crushed K5, and was soon unlocking the big gate into the little pool. It looked stunning, but I was a bit concerned with the green coloured water, as I was used to seeing it tap water clear. There were a couple of anglers on, but the bottom end was free again, and it was an easy decision to set up there.

I checked the notes on my phone and I still had the wrap distances stored, so I wound them up without the need for a marker rod at all. I was using a new braided main line from Gardner called Hydro Sink Noir, coupled with a rod length of 20 lb Mirage fluorocarbon, which is the ultimate in feel with zero stretch, so hoping both spots were still clear I sent them out to the spots. They were indeed, and both rods smashed down first cast. That was good enough for me, and I put in a big hit of the crushed bait and plenty of whole boilies in with a catapult. It was late morning and I guessed past bite time, so I wasn’t worried about the spombing disturbance as much. I sank the lines as I like to let them sink from the lead back, allowing the heavy Mirage leader to pull the braid behind it down slowly, giving my line lay the best in stealth properties.

The lake appeared fairly lifeless and the algae green colour of the lake didn’t look appealing, so I wasn’t overly confident. It was a surprise when only 30 mins after casting out and my spombing barrage had finished, I had a ripping take on the left-hand rod. Bites, as with everything are accentuated on braid, but this one tore line from the clutch as the rod tip pulled around almost down to the spigot. I picked the rod up, and the fish powered off to the middle of the lake on a run that was simply unstoppable. Its power was unbelievable, like hooking into a Polaris missile! I remembered Gavin telling me of SP’s fighting ability, and within 20 seconds I had no doubt as to what I was attached to. It changed battle plan after 3 or 4 long runs and went hard to the right towards a margin which I knew held some savage snags. I held on without giving anything, thankful for the braid, as I knew if it made it there it was game over. It was a stalemate for what seemed ages, until finally it turned and headed back out towards the relative safety of open water. I was grateful too for the strong end tackle, not subtle, but man enough to cope with this long fight. I was using a big size 4 Covert Dark Chod hook, and a 20lb hook link, with a drop off lead C clip, and I already had confidence that the lead had gone.

It was now close in, but staying deep, and it was a further 5 minutes of arm ache before I got a look at it. I saw the cluster of scales near the tail, and the distinctive round body shape, confirming what I already knew, it was the unmistakable SP. It wasn’t finished yet though, despite me praying for it to just give up, and twice having it over my outstretched net, only for it to power off again. Never had I known a fish this strong, and when I finally had it beaten a wave a massive relief washed over me.

She went 38lb 2oz and looked mint, although slightly pale due to the coloured water. I did a few self takes as quickly as I could, before watching her swim off into the pool I had first fished some 20 years before. With autumn not far off it was great timing, but I still packed up with a hint of sadness to what is a special place to me.
