🌟 New
The character limit has been raised from 500 characters to 1,975 characters for all replies on web! No more having to string multiple replies together to say what you want. Thank you to everyone who tested this first in communities!
We started enabling some of those long-anticipated community discovery features for a subset of users! Anyone currently in a community, plus a small and random percentage of all users, will see a new dropdown option on search that lets you browse communities related to your search term. We will also show a sidebar of “Related Communities” on the web for some folks. Communities that are free-to-join will be ranked higher, so if you are the admin of your community and want to get your community in front of more eyes, consider changing your join setting from “invite-only” to “free to join.” We also leverage the tags (in addition to title and description) that you’ve set for your community to rank results, so update those if you haven’t yet!
When you engage with your first community, new signposts will guide you through the experience.
🛠 Fixed
When purchasing items in TumblrMart, important elements will no longer be missing or obscured.
🚧 Ongoing
No ongoing incidents to speak of right now.
🌱 Upcoming
Over the next little while, we’ll slowly increase that percentage of random users until all users are able to find communities via search.

🌟 New
When a community post gets 10 reactions (not counting reactions from the post author) the post author will now receive a notification about those reactions. We want to give some kind of notification when you’re getting reactions, but not for every single reaction (that could be a deluge of hundreds of notifications in our big communities). Let us know what you think!
Community admins and mods will now be asked for a reason when they moderate a comment.
Logged out users, likely new visitors to Tumblr itself, can now start requesting new communities to be put on the waitlist. They will be asked to log in or sign up before finishing.
To celebrate the new folks joining Tumblr from Brazil, we have launched a lot of communities features if you’re in that country, such asrecommended communities in the For You feed and related communities carousels when searching and viewing tag pages in the mobile apps.
🛠 Fixed
Dismissed “Check out these blogs” recommendations are now dismissed forever.
New custom domains were not receiving renewed SSL certificates, and thus not properly accessible. This has now been fixed, and new SSL certificates have been granted to the affected domains.
Archives and custom pages on blogs with custom domains were broken. This has now been fixed.
On web, some dialogs did not disable our keyboard shortcuts while they were open. For example, you could like a post with the ‘l’ key even though a dialog was open on top of the post! This is now fixed.
On web, we were displaying an option to block a community in Activity, which is not actually possible, and has now been removed. Instead of blocking a community, you can simply leave a community.
The community tags section has been updated to make it clearer that they will aid in discovery of your community.
We’ve made a few small design improvements throughout communities. Less wasted space FTW!
🚧 Ongoing
We’re aware that some ads may interrupt background audio on iOS and are working on a fix! We have also received reports of a weird “cricket-like” sound in the app, which we think is related.

We’ve removed the ability to anonymously submit posts to blogs, for blogs that had submissions enabled. Going forward, you must be logged in to submit posts to a blog, and you cannot do so anonymously, like you can with asks.
Community admins will now be asked for a reason when they remove members from a community.
We have some exciting new API documentation for Tumblr Communities!
🛠 Fixed
Previously, on Web, when you looked in the notes view of a post in your queue or drafts, it would say that you can’t reply to or reblog the post. This is true — because the post is not live yet! — but the previous explanation was unclear. We’ve made it clearer now.
You’ll now a see a preview of the image you uploaded or picked when setting a community avatar.
Blog archives were briefly loading as if the blog didn’t exist. This has now been fixed.

🌟 New
Posting in communities no longer counts towards your overall 250 posts/day limit (500 for those with Tumblr Premium), instead we’ve made posting in communities a new, separate 250 posts/day limit (also 500 for those with Tumblr Premium).
We’ve launched an option to make communities free to join and added a “Copy link” option to the community menu to make opening the floodgates even easier.
If you’re banned from a community, you’ll now see “You’ve been banned” instead of “There’s nothing here.”
In a community post’s meatballs menu, “Delete” has been replaced with “Moderate post,” where you can now select reasons for why you’re removing the post and add an optional note. At this moment, the removal reasons you provide won’t be visible to anyone yet. In the future, the person who posted the removed post into the community will see the removal reason as well as any included note.
On public communities, all users can now access the list of admins and moderators.
🛠 Fixed
For a short time Friday and Saturday last week, posts that were moderated in communities were still surfacing in the feed. We’ve fixed the issue, and moderated posts are now filtered out of the feed again.
We fixed a bug that was preventing communities from being deleted when the last member left, and we’ve cleaned up any communities that had no members. The names they were using are freed up for new communities.
We’ve made sure that community notifications are displayed properly, and with the proper icon, across all platforms.
We found an issue that briefly prevented Tumblr Premium users from fully creating communities. This has been fixed, and all affected communities have been fully created.
We fixed an issue that briefly removed the ability to backdate posts late last week.

🛠 Fixed
It was difficult to read long alt text on the web, and this has now been fixed! Please keep in mind that alt text should be a brief description of your image, as if you were describing it to someone over the phone, solely to make your post accessible to folks using a screen reader.
On the web, it was previously impossible in many cases to add a Read More block to the top of a post, and now you can!

Inside communities, we’re continuously rolling out a variety of styling updates, most notably a redesigned header when viewing the community on a mobile phone or mobile browser.
The push notifications signaling that a blog you follow is posting again after being away for awhile have all been updated to include the name of the blog that’s posting again.
🛠️ Fixed

We’ve just launched Blaze Pro, a self-serve and stand-alone advertising platform for Tumblr!
The unified Blaze dashboard from the web has now joined the apps! First, make sure your app is up to date, then visit your blog (tap the snowman icon at the bottom-right), and tap the flame icon near the top.
To avoid confusion with Communities, Community Labels are now Content Labels, and Community Guidelines are now User Guidelines.
Also, the Community category of the support form has been re-assigned to Communities. Please feel free to use that for any questions, concerns, comments, or bugs regarding Communities.
We’ve added Community Invitation push notifications to our mobile apps! When someone with push notifications enabled in the latest app is invited to a Community, they will now receive a push notification instead of a message from Tumblrbot.
We’ve added “This ad has autoplaying audio” to the available reasons when reporting an ad!
🛠 Fixed
An update for the Android app to stop ads with autoplaying audio is rolling out, so please update as soon as it’s available for you!
You can once again navigate between images in a photoset from the lightbox when viewing a blog page directly, such as staff.tumblr.com.

Hello there! So I just made a community and wanted to ask a couple questions.
How will I be able to let people see my community during this beta test and in the future?
Will the cap be removed or be severely bumped up once the beta test is done?
If a community acts out will there be an option to report them?
Answer: Hi there, @lovelyeevee234!
Some great questions here. Let us answer them one by one.
How will I be able to let people see my community during this beta test and in the future?
Right now, communities aren’t listed anywhere. They’re invite-only and “hidden” by design to keep the test somewhat constrained. But in the future, there will be rich discovery experiences just like we have for posts and blogs on Tumblr today! We’re building this stuff as quickly as we can.
Will the cap be removed or be severely bumped up once the beta test is done?
Our hope is to remove the cap entirely. The cap exists as a kind of bottleneck to keep our experiment limited for now, and we already expanded it from 25 to 500 per community. However, the cap could come in handy for communities managed by a small number of people—or those that actually want to be small, which we’ve heard feedback about. The most likely outcome is that the cap will become optional.
If a community acts out will there be an option to report them?
Yes, we’re building moderation features for inside communities now. We are also building moderation features for communities themselves—so they can be reported the same way posts and blogs can be reported. Communities, overall, have to adhere to the same guidelines as everything and everyone else on Tumblr.
Thank you for your questions, and keep 'em coming folks.

🌟 New
The first cut of settings for communities is now available. Admins of communities can change the name, tagline, avatar, header image, tags, and description. You can find a link to these settings in the sidebar for your community on desktop, or in the context menu on mobile.
The community invite popup has been given a design refresh, include a counter of how many invites you have left.
Communities now display whether they are public or private in their header.
Community admins can now promote members to moderators. Moderators can delete posts, and we’re still building out the feature, so expect to see things change in the next few weeks!
We’ve updated the blog posts API endpoint to add the options to specify a sort order and an “after” time, to complement the current option to show posts from “before” a specific time. When using “before”, and by default, posts are sorted in reverse-chronological order (“descending”). With “after” and “sort = asc”, you can sort posts from oldest to newest instead, starting at a certain time.
🛠 Fixed
Since secondary blogs cannot post to communities yet, your primary blog will now always be selected when posting to communities.
Certain activity coming from communities, such as mentions in posts and comments, and soon invitations, now count towards your unread activity total.
🚧 Ongoing
We are aware of ads auto-playing audio in the Android app, sometimes quite loudly, and are working on a fix!
🌱 Upcoming

With communities are group tumblrs finished? can group tumblrs be turned into communities? also will tumblr notify a user if their community idea is rejected? what about communities that have multiple purposes, can communities join together if they have the same goal? or will Tumblr make the communities decide on who can survive?
Answer: Hi there, @richardmurrayhumblr!
All important questions, so we are taking them one at a time.
With communities are group tumblrs finished?
Absolutely not. In fact, the code behind group blogs is what is powering communities right now! But they have very different purposes and only overlap in some ways. We have no plans to remove group blogs.
can group tumblrs be turned into communities?
Because group blogs and communities do share a lot of code right now, this is something we’ve been thinking about doing. Some of the inspiration for communities has come from group blogs that are run as a way for people to get together in one space and share content—that is exactly what we hope for communities, too. We can’t say when we’ll get to this, but it’s an interesting idea.
also will tumblr notify a user if their community idea is rejected?
This waitlist is temporary, so we’re not sending out notices for the communities we don’t approve. We may not even get through all of them before we open up creation for everyone, in which case, the ones we didn’t approve can be created then!
what about communities that have multiple purposes, can communities join together if they have the same goal? or will Tumblr make the communities decide on who can survive?
That’s an interesting idea! We’re not really sure yet. The way we’ve envisioned it so far is not to try to enforce the notion that there is “one community” about a given subject. Instead, there can be dozens or hundreds or even thousands of communities about a given subject, and each of them will probably be a little different in their own way. That’s how communities of people on Tumblr already behave, most of the time. We’re just building an easier way to structure them.
That said, we are very interested in adding ways for communities to link to each other. So if there are a bunch of communities about the same subject, they can form some kind of ring or cluster together.
All great questions—thank you for getting in touch. Keep 'em coming, folks!

On web, notes navigation has received a refresh, with improved spacing and color highlights that make it easier to know exactly what you’re viewing.
For the first batch of new communities, we were auto-adding new admins into the public Communities Feedback and private Admin Zone communities. Now that the volume of new communities has increased exponentially, we’ve decided to stop auto-adding people to those communities. Instead, soon we hope to make the Communities Feedback community free-to-join, and send admins an invite link to the Admin Zone so they can choose if they want to join. In the meantime, if you have any questions/problems/feedback, please reach out to Support.
