Knitting for furby book outline
Tumblr media
At this point, I have gathered a pattern outline for this e-book.
As of right now, I have five items drafted (not final or written mind you) and plans for one more that'll serve as an easy starter project for complete knitting newbies to learn about stitch gauge (really important for furby items), how to cast on, join in the round, knit, and cast off in a shorter period of time while still having an end product for your furb.
NOTES ON LEARNING TO KNIT
This will not be a 'learning to knit from scratch book' it is intended as a pattern book that is accessible to all levels of knitter and all budgets. I do intend on having a starting chapter that will walk through supplies, pattern layout, and resources for readers.
That being said, this pattern collection could be a good way to learn knitting as the items are smaller but with standard yarn. and the patterns going in order of difficulty should be helpful.
I am one for making it work so I also want to provide guides for yarn substitutions, altering pieces that are too big, and editing patterns to make completely new pieces.
ON TO THE PATTERNS
the first pattern is not drafted so this is patterns 2-6 ( more may come soon or these may be different in their final written form)
2. CHONK SWEATER
Tumblr media
i have a few of these made in my handspun so they're p chonky, making it a quick knit even for beginners. there will be notes on measuring your furb and getting your stitch count based on your gauge.
3. CHONK shawl/ collar/ cape
Tumblr media
This is also really simple and quick ( its slightly more difficult due to it being knit flat and needing to do some seeming. This is also in some chunky handspun and needs to be sampled again (this one is a tad small). I will give notes on changing the length to make this a collar, a cape, or a shawl to fit your furbs needs.
4. Worsted weight dress
Tumblr media
This iconic witchy sweater dress is where the difficulty increases a tad, but the result is having more room to customize the garment. it is in a worsted weight so smaller yarn but not tiny. it does involve increasing and decreasing in ribbing which isn't hard but can have a learning curve. this pattern will include instructions on making the folded collar and accessorizing the garment.
5. Frilly Shawl/ cape/ collar
Tumblr media
This pattern is a sister pattern to the 3rd pattern, it's the same garment type but is a bit more involved. it uses fingering weight and optional mohair for a fuzzy look. this starts flat and is joined in the round to do ribbing, and then stitches on the end are picked up and increased to create a frill/ floof thing.
6. Clown collar
Tumblr media
this final pattern uses the same yarns, and techniques as the last pattern but in a different way. this pattern uses some seaming techniques and requires a folded hem (knit or sewn together). this can have as few as one frill and as many as you desire.
The mohair isn't held double so yarn subs will be a bit harder but not impossible. I'm trying to keep all of these yarns to ones that can be picked up at a big box craft store or an lys for accessibility but Mohair maybe the one outlier, but if the halo from the silk mohair isn't necessary for you then a fingering weight (4-ply ) should be okay.
Anyway thats the outline that i have so far, let me know what you think!

how did you do a new furby custom how
OK so the first thing that I ended up doing was drawing up some concepts of 1998 furbies that I liked as the 2023 furby.
The design that I ended up going with was the skunk just because to me that feels like the “furbiest furby if that makes sense
Tumblr media
So after I had my concept in mind, I started to skin the Furby, again. As you may have noticed in my previous posts, I had skinned this furby previously, which is why I felt more comfortable, making him into a custom.
After skinning, I did some minor disassembly, mainly taking off the ears and the eyes. I haven’t quite figured out a good enough way to takeoff the feet yet.
For the eyes, I wanted to try and take the paint off and prime them so I worked my way up from solvents finding that 99% IPA was the best, I took the eye paint off, and then proceeded to give the eyelid section a coat of black paint
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I then started on the face plate, painting, it, black, and giving everything a coat of Mr. super clear and while that was drying I started on the eyes and did my first test fit
Tumblr media Tumblr media
after finishing the eyes and leaving them to dry, I started on patterning the pelt,
I used standard methods, scanned it, and then imported it into inkscape where I cleaned it up and cut it out. It was pretty simple (only 3 pieces) so it was a very quick process to sew it and the faceplate back on, I was then able to do my 2nd test fits.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
After the 2nd test fit, I decided to try and work on the heart gem, it’s a bit finicky so I had to use a pretty thick embroidery needle to push and pick the fur into place but I got it,
I didn’t take any pics of reassembly because getting the ears back on is pretty frustrating, but here we are
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I was super happy with the final result, all and all it only took me 2-3 hours to complete and was pretty fun to do.
I wouldn’t say it was a very complex disassembly process, you didn’t have to deal with any eyechips to change the eyes, yet the eyes weren’t an accessible like on a 2005. The pelt was also pretty straightforward , only being 2 pieces before I modified it so it could be sewn In less than 5 minutes. All of the parts unscrew pretty easily and go back together really well, and the plastic takes paint amazingly. It’s a pretty solid base for customs
But ye, that’s how I ended up making Slunk. :p

Also! I had a lot of asks about my furby patterns for the 2023 furb among others, so I decided to do a couple digital patterns on Ko-fi
This is my first time selling patterns, but I’m kind of a perfectionist and try to get them nearly identical to factory ones so ye :p
These patterns are all the ones I personally use for my customs. I’ve got some pretty unusual ones like 2005s and shelbies! I should have some more up soon, including 05 baby’s and some cloths! (Like tropical furby shirt and Wizard cloak)

I am learning about furbies and their fellow friends, the shelby. Did you know that furbies live up to 125 years old?? Shelby can live even longer, for 175 years!
Furbies also literally NEED to bond with a complex lifeform to reach full maturity.
They originally lived on some islands in a underground ocean, but the species that bonded with the furbies, described as tall, slender and transparent, died because of climate change, so furbies had to migrate to the overworld.
Also furbies don't have the concept of gender and are canonicaly intersex

Funky little synapsids
Also here's a guide showing the differences between furbies and shelby:

The line "Furbies can be rude, Shelby can be even ruder" has me DEAD

Some recently-found Chuby Elf photos! The last one is just a picture from their website I saw months ago, though.
Chuby Elf came from a place called Dream Planet.

How to Skin (or Shuck) a Shelby (+ Push Start)
I’m not going to lie to you: It was super hard to figure out how to open my Shelby. It took me maybe an hour of solid Google-ing to find any information, and it culminated in precisely one defunct website from 2002 that, upon later Google-ing, I could not find again. I owe that website my life, and if anyone can find it again, I’ll be very grateful.
1) Peel back the fur
Tumblr media
You may have noticed all the screws on the bottom of your shelb. I don’t know what they hold in, but the good news is that you don’t need to either! Instead, you’ll want to comb through your Shelby’s fur until you find 5 screws: 2 lower on the back, 2 on the top behind Shelby’s ‘tennies, and 1 off-center in front of the ‘tennies. All these screws are slightly different sizes, so keep track of where they all go.
(This Shelby’s screws are very rusty, by the way. Yours probably won’t look quite so awful. They’ll also be very hard to find on shelbies with darker fluff)
Tumblr media
You should be able to pull the fur and it’s plastic backing away from Shelby’s body now. It’s glued on at the bottom, but the fur doesn’t need to come off all the way, so you can leave that alone.
2) Free the shell
Tumblr media
This one’s a little weird: When Shelby is facing you, you will find a screw on the left side of the body, screwed into the shell. Remove this screw and the piece it holds in. Do not repeat this step on the other side.
Tumblr media
Here’s what it looks like inside the shell. The tapered side ends just inside the piece that holds Shelby’s eyelashes/unibrow in, and is only attached by the one screw. Again, completely ignore the matching piece on the right side of the shell. Though it’s the same part, it doesn’t do anything.
Tumblr media
This piece is important to remove because it forms one half of the hinge that keeps Shelby’s shell from opening too far.
3) Remove the shell
You should be able to now wiggle the shell around pretty freely. To get it off, you need to rotate it 90 degrees and lift it over the ‘tennies. Rotating it is pretty tricky, because the fit around the base of the ‘tennies is pretty tight, but there’s a certain sweet spot that lets the shell rotate pretty smoothly. Just keep wiggling and twisting gently and you should be able to get it in the right spot, which looks like this:
Tumblr media
Then it’s just a simple matter of maneuvering the ‘tennies through the slot!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Congratulations, you’ve done it! You may notice that Shelby looks a lot different from a Furby. Specifically, the speaker, motor, and cam gears are absolutely buried under each other! While it’s nowhere nearly as easy, you can still push-start a Shelby.
+) Push-starting
Tumblr media
If you look in through the top of Shelby’s head, just about above the right eye, you should be able to see the cam. If you’re lucky, one of the 3-ish gears you’ll be able to see has a nub (very similar to the ones I talk about in my sync screw guide) that you can reach with a long, sturdy tool like a flathead screwdriver. With batteries in the shelb, gently push on the gear. Be ready to pull your tool out as quickly as you can, because just the lightest pressure can bring a Shelby out of a coma!
It is absolutely vital that you are gentle with these gears! If you apply too much pressure, you run the risk of warping the gear, and even the slightest scratch or bent tooth can permanently ruin these little bots. Use caution and never try to brute force plastic pieces!
Tumblr media
Thanks for taking the time to read my guide! If you’re feeling generous, you can donate to my Ko-fi! I really appreciate it, and donations will help me provide more guides and fun tech stuff in the future!
You’re also completely welcome to use the images or writing in this guide on other websites, or in your own guides! If you do so, please leave a link back to this post near the images.
