Archiving the Keep

As some of you may have noticed, the Plumb Bob Keep site has been down for several days. At this time, we do not know anything about the future of the site; we have no contact with Sunni's family, who pay for it. Since the future of the site is uncertain, we are calling for all hands on deck to help us try to archive as much of the downloads as possible: images, text, links and actual download zips. We will primarily be using the Wayback Machine, but as Google searching was only turned on in the last year, many things will not be accessible. Fire_flower has created a spreadsheet to help organize the effort and allow us to see where the gaps are. This will be step one of the process, before we dive into our personal collections.

Unconventional Lifetime Wants

Two more awesome people @lottes-little-place and @applewatersugar joined the translation team and will make Dutch and Hungarian speaking players happy.

Meanwhile, I want to tell you about unconventional LTWs.

Most of my new lifetime wants are straightforward -- do 200 of that or have 20 of those -- and as soon as you do that the want gets fulfilled. This is what we're all used to in Sims 2.

However, there are some LTWs that have a set of special conditions or less obvious fulfillment triggers, so it's sometimes worth to read the want's description in game. I know, I don't like to read too.

One example is the Wellness lifetime want where a sim has to do a bunch of fitness and health things: master meditation skill, learn happiness, get fit and so on. What may surprise you is that it gets triggered by a protein shake. Like, when you think you've done all the required things drink a protein shake, the mod will check if you really qualify, and will fulfill the LTW.

Why? It's a compromise to avoid lots of overrides and reduce the possibility of mod conflicts.

I hope that once you're aware of existence of these odd lifetime wants they won't confuse you and you'll get used to them eventually.

Build/Buy Mode Enabled on Community Lots

Community Skilling - enables your sims get skill points on community lots. By default they can’t gain them.

Sleep on Community Lots

Business Runs You - it will manage the employees, making them take breaks automatically, giving them reasonable wages automatically, etc

Autoyak - adds phone options to call friends. Automatically picks and chooses existing friends and calls until relations are repaired. This mode is required for the Business mod above.

I'm excited to see the new lifetime wants!

Lifetime Want Chooser

Hi all!

To start off this simblr, here's something I've just finished.

This is an object for the Sims 2 that lets you manually choose a lifetime want for your sim, instead of cycling one by one!

I made it while working on 50 new lifetime wants and realizing what a huge pain it is to go through them in testing. If only we could just choose an LTW, I thought. Well, :)

I just accidentally learned another thing

if you type the beginning of a cheat in the cheat box and press Tab, it will auto-fill with the next cheat in alphabetical order to what you typed

so if you type “setq” then hit Tab, it will automatically fill the rest in with the cheat “SetQuarterTilePlacement”

it even knows your shortcuts, example I have “snapon/off” and “moveon/off” set as shortcuts for SnapObjectsToGrid and MoveObjects, if I type “sn” then hit Tab it will auto-fill with my shortcut “snapoff”

you can also hit Tab when the cheat box is blank and it will filter through every cheat - those aren’t alphabetical for some reason, but only having to type “setq” instead of “SetQuarterTilePlacement” still seems pretty useful

Most Simmers I know: Okay so I have a different spreadsheet for every savefile to keep track of every single little detail, also here's my complex CC and mods sorting system - make sure you pay attention to load order or you can mess the whole game up. Yeah it took me about a week to completely do all my default replacements, but I was working fast so it might take you much longer. Do you wanna do an investigative deep dive into the game files and abandoned elements with me? Or maybe we can try out this fun new community challenge! Oh are you having trouble with your game? sims 2 corruption is wild like in strangetown there’s this poor dude called knut futa right. i mean already unfortunate on account of his name already, along with being a victim of serial killer olive specter, but that’s the least of this mans worries. this dude has the unfortunate distinction of being the most glitchy sim ever. his grave doesn’t even show up because his character file is so fucked he doesn’t even count as dead. he completely lacks any personality, interests, memories, genetics, age, anything, so the game treats the man as a baby despite him being a full grown adult so he just lies on the floor. any attempts to do anything to help him will fail. he cannot be interacted with. he cannot be aged out of his baby hell because the game will crash. his data is SO borked the community full of bonkers talented programming wizards CANNOT fix him. his data isn’t even formatted correctly. this poor man got hit by the game corruption beam and no one can save him. f in chat for knut futa.

A tip about lot skirt size

Just something I found out recently and thought I could share. So you know how many of us have a line like this in their Userstartup.cheat:

uintProp LotSkirtSizeIncrease 120

Which makes the whole neighborhood visible from all lots. It looks nice! But strains the texture memory pretty badly, especially with heavily decorated hoods. Forcing the view distance from the startup cheats also greys out the view distance setting from the in-game menu so you’ll be stuck with only one option.

But! It’s also possible to do this through Graphics Rules.sgr. There are lines that look like this:

If you haven’t fiddled them like I have, the numbers will be different. In any case, changing them here will directly affect the in-game settings for the view distance.

The benefit is, you can then swap between them easily in-game:

For example with the numbers I used, the medium setting now is what maxis used as extra large, the large setting basically does the job on most lots, and the extra large setting makes the whole neighborhood visible. So I can turn the view distance to extra large when I need it but keep it lower when I don’t.

Just remember to delete the line completely from the startup cheats for this to work. I hope this helps somebody!

Sims with No Interests in Complete Collection

Have you recently installed The Sims Complete Collection and noticed that your sims aren’t getting along with anyone? Well, it might mean you have a case of boring-simitis.

Interests were added with the Hot Date expansion pack so all your shiny new sims haven’t gotten any yet.  Most references I found said to send your sims downtown or to old town to generate new interests but this was so tedious to do to every single household in the game. So, I tried using move_objects on, deleting each sim to reset them and voila, interests! 

TLDR: Move_objects on cured my sims’ depression!

The Grilled Cheese Church Challenge

I call this a challenge for lack of a better term but these are essentially guidelines to create a community based around the grilled cheese aspiration. I wanted to create a community in an organic way without needing to memorize rules and restrictions. Basically you will recruit townies to your church in order to build a community.

Requirements

This challenge requires at least the Open for Business and Freetime expansion packs. Also, if you don’t already have the sim manipulator by Aaroneous then you should get it now.  Not only does this challenge depend on it a lot but it is an awesome mod that adds a lot of options to how you can play the Sims 2! You don’t need the Sun&Moon’s cheese press mod but it looks like fun, and after testing out some gameplay I will probably add cheese making as another optional element to this challenge later on.

Setup

The leader of the Church of Grilled Cheese is called the “Gouda”.

Create a sim with a neat and lazy personality.  This is the best personality for the cuisine hobby but if their one true hobby is not cuisine then use the sim manipulator to change it. This is the only sim you will create. All other sims added to the neighborhood must be recruited from townies.

Make sure your sim has a significant interest in the food topic. If they don’t, then use the sim manipulator to add interest in food and subtract that exact amount of points from any other topic.

Assign the grilled cheese aspiration as the Gouda’s main aspiration. You could use the ReNuYu Senso Orb but using the sim manipulator is much faster.

The Gouda’s main goal is to complete the lifetime want to eat 200 grilled cheese sandwiches but after that you can play them however you want.

When the Gouda dies the next Gouda is appointed based on merit and personality. Pick a sim among the community with high cooking skill, a one true hobby of cuisine, and an interest in food. Upon appointment, reassign the new Gouda’s main aspiration to grilled cheese. 

The Center for Grilled Cheese Sims

Purchase a community lot and build a store to sell grilled cheese and spread the word of cheeses.

You can make a restaurant once you have enough sims in the community to work as host/ess, chef, and waiting staff if you want. *Running a successful restaurant is tough so be warned.*

Staff can only be hired from members of the Grilled Cheese community.

I added the stockable cheese and bread mod to my game so I could sell them at the grilled cheese shop but this isn’t required.

Church Guidelines

Recruit new sims to the church by inviting townies to move in.

Make sure sims are a good fit for the church by talking to them about food. *While talking to them, click your sim to change the topic to food.*

You can try "talking about grilled cheese" but be aware that only  grilled cheese sims and nice sims will accept. Since this is the case, I’m not making�� it a requirement.

Make note of how much money they move in with. Once they have made enough simoleons they can move out of the recruitment home.

Recruits become true believers in grilled cheese by taking it as their secondary aspiration.

This will keep sims’ personalities unique and will hopefully keep gameplay from being too repetitive.

The cooking skill and cuisine hobby is not required for recruits. Recruits can have any personality and aspiration, they just have to be interested in food.

All works (art, crafts, and novels) must be dedicated to cheese.

Name books something cheesy *heh? ;)*, paint grilled cheese, make cheesy jokes, etc, etc.

It is suggested that all sims born into the church be given a cheese related name. 

Donations

Sims will pay dowries to the Church of Grilled Cheese to fund public works. Donations are not scheduled nor required. They donate what they can when able. You will probably want to keep track of donations in a spreadsheet or a notebook or use a mod that allows you to take money directly from another household. I suggest building a place of worship, learning center, or fun center to start.

Since these guidelines are pretty general, you can add challenges to this if you want. I think it would be interesting to try to play for 10 generations or integrate the cow plant in some way.  But that is up to you! I would love to hear any input especially since this challenge is entirely hypothetical and untested. So let me know what you think!

After playing this challenge for a few weeks, I'm feeling like its time to end the experiment. As I suspected might happen, the gameplay gets pretty repetitive, so I think this challenge would be better suited for a subhood, an individual household, or a short term challenge, and not so good as a way to build a neighborhood. I can only make them cook grilled cheese so many times before getting bored. I will definitely add a Grilled Cheese Church to the next new town I make though, as I think it is a fun and quirky way to add new characters to a neighborhood.
