it pains me that the finale fucked up the show’s core thesis of the duality of mob mentality and group survival so bad by making shauna into a dictator-like figure in the end. the show has been asserting since season 1 that these girls are doing horrible things because the group demands it. the wilderness demands it, and the group is the wilderness, and there is no real difference— but then we get to the finale and shauna is commanding with fear and intimidation when all the others are against her and sure, it’s not out of character for her, but it’s out of character for the show
shauna being antler queen could have been such a natural progression of her character development in a really interesting way. her being antler queen was always meant to happen, but they went about it in the most boring way possible. she’s been resisting the wilderness the entire time despite being a physical representation of its wrath and hunger. why have her do a 180 and take that power by force when we could have seen her slowly accepting it and basking in it, encouraging the others to bask in it with her? why even have her need to take it by force when the girls have committed so many collective atrocities and liked it?
to be clear: none of how the show chose to portray shauna as antler queen in the finale surprises me. they’ve been building up to this since the beginning of the season, so, yeah. saw that coming. but it disappoints me. the writing in the past two seasons was so interesting and nuanced that this predictable, lazy progression of events makes the entire season stand out as the worst so far and recontextualizes the entire show in a negative light. shauna as antler queen doesn’t feel earned or satisfying, it feels like a letdown, like the ending we all knew was coming to a doomed plotline
nobody misunderstands shauna shipman as a character more than the yellowjackets writers themselves
#shauna shipman#I have so many thoughts that I can’t express yet#this season just feels so tonally disconnected from the first two#yellowjackets#yellowjackets spoilers

YJ season 4 wilderness timeline better have Misty become Nat’s shadow, always a step behind her, always at her elbow. I want the devotion we saw in the adult timeline, and I want it dialled up to eleven because she’s a kid and she’s stuck in the woods with nothing else going on. I want people to ask Nat wtf is up with her and Quigley and Misty hears and is like “We have a bond you could never understand.”

misty as the final one standing. they're all going to hunt each other until nobody's left except misty will always be left. she's always been the outsider of the group. she was desperate to be one of the girls but despite what they all went through together in the wilderness, she's still the outsider and she is always going to be just that and this time it might actually save her life
#misty final girl is so deeply personal to me#this is the punishment for destroying the black box- she will always end up alone#yellowjackets#misty quigley#yellowjackets spoilers#the lingering shot of her face in the pilot is seriously why I believe this

nat being the one to find out abt misty destroying the 'transponder' is exactly how it was always going to go and i LOVE its where we ended up. its why adult nat is so cold and jaded and wary around adult misty, its why she knows inherently that misty cuts her battery cable, tampering w something again to be close to her. why nat is not completely surprised at misty spying on her in her hotel room with a camera. like sorry, since nat's s1 misty hallucination its always been them, intertwined in this resentful and twisted and devoted red string of fate they keep tugging and tugging on until misty eventually strangles her
#the way that Nat might be the only Yellowjacket who wouldn’t immediately tell the group bc she just can’t have any more blood on her hands#the adult Nat distrust of Misty makes so much sense#but teen Nat cannot be the direct cause of yet another death#natalie scatorccio#misty quigley#mistynat#yellowjackets spoilers#yellowjackets

I’ve thought extensively about how the three that want to stay- Taissa, Shauna, and Lottie- are the three that have their lives crash and burn in the adult timeline.
They were right when they said they can’t go back. They can never go back to the life that they had. They can fake it for a couple decades, with their picket-fence lives or harmonious community, but the moment that the Yellowjackets collide again, their perfectly constructed world crumbles.
#yellowjackets#yellowjackets spoilers#shauna shipman#taissa turner#lottie matthews#also something to be said about Natalie’s persistent optimism and empathy- you don’t survive the wilderness with those#Natalie scatorccio you deserved so much better

The only reason I know Mari is dead is because I just know she would’ve written a tell all bestseller novel about surviving the wilderness followed by a reality show and an infamous Oprah interview that rivals Prince Harry’s
#oooooh 8th survivor Mari who gets killed for breaking their pact of secrecy#Yellowjackets#mari ibarra

It’s less so a theory and more of what I think would be interesting- my first thought after seeing Lottie go to town on that man’s grey matter was prion disease, which can take years to incubate and is completely incurable.
Like Lottie dying of the physical consequence of what they did in The Wilderness would be such an interesting thing to explore. I don’t think it’s remotely likely but thematically it would go so hard
#unfortunately it would’ve been seen on the autopsy#but that’s another interesting layer- physical proof of their cannibalism#I think way too much about prion diseases that shit is terrifying#yellowjackets spoilers#Yellowjackets#lottie matthews

Tbh I feel like a lot of Yellowjackets fans that are obsessed with ship wars and “keeping characters accountable” are watching the wrong goddamn show. This is Hannibal, not The Summer I Turned Pretty. The characters are gonna be the worst possible versions of themselves bc that is the entire point of this season!!! Why are you watching if you’re just gonna comment “Shauna is insufferable and deserves xyz”, I’ve seen so many ppl say they straight up skip the adult timeline. I hate to beat a dead horse but this is the EVIL WOMAN SHOW. They do horrible evil fucked up things and spend their adult lives trying to ignore or offset them, and I for one relish seeing it.
#I love Shauna I love Misty I love Natalie I love Lottie I love Taissa I love Van#I love every character on this show bc they are WRITTEN TO BE FUCKING COMPLICATED#I like Ben! I’m sad about his death but also I’ve accepted that a long time ago so all the people acting shocked about it are surprising#maybe it’s just me but I’m watching the insane women show bc I fucking love insane feral evil women#and I resent the recent concept of ‘cheering for an evil person in fiction makes you a real life evil person’ get a fucking grip#shauna shipman#yellowjackets spoilers#yellowjackets

people are overlooking the obvious: many of the girls don’t want to be rescued because 1) they know what they’re doing is a crime 2) they found a new purpose in the wilderness that they aren’t willing to let go of. do you really think that shauna, who has been frantically journaling for months about how she deserves to be the antler queen, is going to let a few stray hikers take that from her now that she finally has it? melissa and the other girls see her the way she saw jackie. she would (and does) kill to keep that. that’s why she’s the most interesting character! she’s the one who spearheads their descent into total irredeemable madness.
#I’ve seen way too many ‘I hate Shauna this season’ MORE FOR ME THEN#I want melissahat to make her worse actually#shauna shipman#yellowjackets#yellowjackets spoilers

Ok so like am I the only one kinda alarmed by Jeff’s obsession with getting good karma. Like that’s step one of The Wilderness, seeking signs and benefits from sacrifice, even when sometimes it’s complete happenstance. I love this season’s theme of searching for meaning and a Greater Power, whether it’s Tai trying to invoke the wilderness through sacrifice or Jeff trying to absolve his guilt.
#jeff sadecki#shauna shipman#taissa turner#yellowjackets spoilers#yj spoilers#yellowjackets#also Lottie’s influence on Callie- I really think a plot beat might be how vulnerable Shuana’s family is to The Wilderness#which Shauna herself obviously views as the moral alibi to their horrific actions
