🇺🇸FDA advisory: avoid this potentially radioactive frozen shrimp🇺🇸
this is NOT yet a recall, but the FDA is recommending these products be recalled. when this becomes a recall, I will make a recall post. you may have seen this in the news as an advisory about walmart shrimp, but it is NOT just walmart. it is currently unclear where else this shrimp has been sold.
and to be clear, the levels of radioactivity are relatively low, but these products were exposed to insanitary conditions that permitted contamination with cesium-137 in the first place.
I (rune) encourage you to read the advisory for more context and information. the investigation is ongoing, the advisory is being updated, and the list of affected products will expand.
August 19, 2025 FDA is actively investigating reports of Cesium-137 (Cs-137) contamination in shipping containers and frozen shrimp products processed by PT. Bahari Makmur Sejati (doing business as BMS Foods) of Indonesia. The U.S. Customs & Border Protection (CBP) alerted FDA to the detection of Cs-137 in shipping containers at four U.S. ports (Los Angeles, Houston, Savannah, and Miami). FDA collected multiple samples for radionuclide analysis, with results confirming the presence of Cs-137 in one sample of breaded shrimp. All containers and product testing positive or alerting for Cs-137 have been denied entry into the country. The agency continues to coordinate with CBP to prevent any contaminated products from reaching consumers and is working with Indonesian seafood regulatory authorities to investigate the root cause of the contamination.  Although testing to date has not confirmed the presence of contamination in any product in commerce, the product appears to have been prepared, packed, or held under insanitary conditions whereby it may have become contaminated with Cs-137 and may pose a safety concern. To date, FDA has learned that Walmart has received implicated raw frozen shrimp, imported after the date of first detection of Cs-137 by CBP, but from shipments that did not alert for Cs-137. FDA has recommended Walmart recall this product.
the shrimp came from an indonesian company called pt. bahari makmur sejati (doing business as BMS foods). products that tested positive for cs-137 contamination did not wind up on US shelves, but that does not necessarily mean that none of the cs-137 contaminated products wound up on US shelves. the products experienced insanitary and potentially dangerous conditions regardless.
right now the shrimp is for sure sold at walmart, but like so many other food safety situations in the united states, there is no immediate list of everywhere the affected shrimp products are sold.
Consumers should not eat or serve certain lots of Great Value raw frozen shrimp from Walmart:   Great Value brand frozen raw shrimp, lot code: 8005540-1, Best by Date: 3/15/2027  Great Value brand frozen raw shrimp, lot code: 8005538-1, Best by Date: 3/15/2027  Great Value brand frozen raw shrimp, lot code: 8005539-1, Best by Date: 3/15/2027.  If you have recently purchased raw frozen shrimp from Walmart that matches this description, throw it away. Do not eat or serve this product.
there was previously a list of states where these products were confirmed to have been sold by walmart, but the list has since been removed from the advisory. multiple updates have been issued just while I have been typing this post. it is critical to understand that even if the list of states goes back up, it is not a comprehensive list of where the affected products were sold.
there is no comprehensive list of where the affected products were sold yet. walmart is just the first confirmed affected retailer.
FDA will continue working with industry to trace all implicated products processed by PT. Bahari Makmur Sejati through the supply chain to gather as much information about them as possible and take action as appropriate. Product information will be added to this advisory as it becomes available.
products from pt. bahari makmur sejati (doing business as BMS foods) have been barred from entering the US until the source of contamination is identified and addressed.
If you suspect you have been exposed to elevated levels of cesium, talk to your healthcare provider.
for updates on this situation, as well as more information about cs-137 or the currently identified products, check the FDA advisory link. all quotes are liable to have changed in the source by the time you see this post.
extra tidbit: bmsfood.com is currently advertising their shrimp as being able to help prevent cancer. so...about that...
thanks for reading, stay safe and take care!

The point is that mutual aid, like charities or private action, is not a sustainable or effective substitute for government resources and programs. A whole lotta leftists really wanting to go the classical liberal Victorian route but with that progressive veneer.

The issue with the AI soulmate thing to me isn’t even like, the AI part. It’s how it represents like, totally giving up on connections with other people. And like, to some extent I do get that, when people are dicks to me I have a hard time wanting to open myself up, too. But this cannot possibly be a tenable solution, you know?
This feels to me like a logical end result of a lot of other converging factors that have coalesced to make it so that AI is like, naturally more attractive than any other means of finding a partner. Like, on the one hand, a lot of these people are (presumably? HOPEFULLY?) naive and somewhat undersocialized. Socializing is an iterative process that takes time and labor, and a lot of younger people who are primarily used to social media dynamics don’t understand like, working and even getting along with someone you don’t really fuck with. But also that means you don’t get a ton of opportunities to like, feel your opinion about someone change. You realize oh wait maybe I was kind of a douche and this person’s actually really cool. Maybe they’re even hot. That doesn’t happen if you’re quick to ghost.
But also like, why wouldn’t you ghost? Again, there are so many hours in the day, and countless people in the world. When you have so many options before you, why would you want to take your time with each one? For people who have specific relationship goals, why NOT maximize your odds of finding the person for whom everything is effortless? Swipe through profiles, don’t waste your time with weirdos, anyone who gives you the Ick, you only have so much time and money! But also save time by memorizing certain maxims: Never date anyone who talks about their ex in too good or too bad terms, never date a guy who wears this cologne, nurses are red flags, etc.
But don’t forget you’re being judged too, so make sure you present as your BEST POSSIBLE SELF at ALL POSSIBLE COSTS! Don’t upload pictures of yourself being happy if you have a double chin. Make sure you wear makeup even if you’re buying toothpaste at CVS. You should casually show everyone you have money but don’t flaunt it too much so make sure you’re photographed at this trending restaurant so everyone knows you’re with it. Don't forget you have a shelf-life because someday you will NOT BE YOUNG/HOT ANYMORE so you HAVE TO HURRY because WHO WILL WANT YOU WHEN YOU'RE NOT YOUNG/HOT?? But also if you say something weird or accidentally rude, double down because if you make a mistake you’ve ruined the permanent first impression everyone has of you because nobody really wants to give you a second chance and once you’re a bad person that’s it.
But also like, when do you get to mess up? When do you get to test out a joke, test out an anecdote, when the fear of failure and subsequent judgment dogs at your heels (and like, it’s not even an inaccurate fear)? And if you can’t even do that, when do you get to be vulnerable? When do you get to actually fuck up? Of course it makes complete sense that the ideal partner would then be this thing that REPLICATES human interaction without ever putting you at any risk, and which you can correct. No no, fawn over me in THIS way. Laugh at my jokes THAT way. Confess your love for me in the specific way I fantasize about. Save me from the agony of asking another person to fulfill those fantasies for me. Save me from the agony of having to reciprocate that devotion. What's better than this robot that exists to love me, to praise me, to tell me I'm adored with no expectations of reciprocity, no discomfort of intimacy, no risk? This thing that is totally incapable of leaving me, of judging me, of saying anything unexpected that I can't swiftly correct. It's ideal compared to having to face (what feels like, and I'm sure occasionally absolutely is) perpetual public scrutiny.
I’ve said in the past that we do nobody any favors when we talk about how nonsensical it is that anybody would use AI. It makes perfect sense to use AI under these conditions! The harder part is convincing literally anybody that the risks of reality are worth it and I do think a big part of it could be like… seeking out and allowing for benign, positive interactions with strangers and allowing yourself the possibility of changing your mind about the people you’ve known for a while

any thoughts about vivziepop's "Homestuck"?
You are not compelled to form any opinion at all about this matter before you, not to disturb your peace of mind at all. Things in themselves have no power to extort a verdict from you.

I don't think it's entirely fair to say that it's a unique aspect of age or site culture when people on bluesky reply to algorithmic feed posts as if they are personally being spoken to, because it's pretty common, it just manifests differently based on behaviour encouraged by site format
the version of this encouraged by tumblr's design is definitely that thing where someone sees a post in which op is describing a behaviour they hate, which prompts someone who doesn't know op to say "but I do this" because, if not exactly coming off as targeted at you, the dash format does encourage people to read every post as "from my friend" or "from someone my friend knows"
and of course that usually ends catastrophically because a complete stranger just entered a conversation with someone by opening on "hello, I do something you hate, do you like me"
