Sharpwin Recap/Meta of Season 2 Episode 10 “Code Silver”

Y’all I can’t get over this episode!!!!!! It’s not an exaggeration when I say that I literally screamed through the entire last scene of tonight’s episode. I CAN’T GET OVER WHAT I JUST WITNESSED!!! Before I dive in can we talk about Freema Ageyman’s acting tonight?! She literally knocked it out of the park! One thing that I love about Freema is that she’s able to spell out what Helen is thinking so clearly without saying much at all and it’s INCREDIBLE. I said this in a crazed, manic and (misspelled), way on twitter tonight but I’m going to repeat it here. Can we all take about the confidence Helen exudes tonight while talking to Max?! She is literally a whole ass WOMAN and her facial expressions alone was putting on game and putting the ball in Max’s court!
I mean the man was literally stumbling over his words in her presence while he was awkwardly/basically asking her out on a date. I’m 1000% convinced that the events that unfolded tonight only deepened his love for her and it was so evident in their conversation. Before I continue to frantically type all of my incoherent thoughts about Sharpwin on this post, still reeling and majorly fanfirling about this episode, here are a two of my biggest takeaways from tonight’s episode and what I think it means for Sharpwin for the rest of this season.
Helen and Max seem to be fully aware of the fact that they have feelings for each other (are in love) but they don’t know what to do with it. In my previous metas, one of my strongest arguments for earlier on in their relationship was that it’s entirely possible to be in love/fall in love with someone without fully realizing it. For the most part, I believe that has been in the case for Helen and Max. Consciously they are not “fully aware” or better yet completely surpressed the idea due to outside circumstances (Max marriage to Georgia, doctor/paitient relationship, etc.) and yet in their subconscious, the depths of their souls, they totally were. That’s why all of their interactions have been laced with angst and SUBTEXT and their are endless “conversations within a conversation” between them. After tonight’s episode this essence of their relationship has shifted. Do you guys realize how monumental it is for Helen to willingly choose to stay at New Amsterdam? It’s not about titles but everything that we as an audience know about Helen at this point we would have fully expected her to leave New Amsterdam. (This might still happen but that’s another topic for another post.) After all of her hard work and everything she’s put into that department, Helen is not the type of woman to easily take a back seat and allow this dent in her career to happen. And yes, I’m sure other factors influenced her decision to stay at New Amsterdam but we can’t deny that one of the biggest reasons she decided to stay was because of Max. That’s huge y’all and in more ways than none that’s her openly accepting/ admitting to herself that Max means something profoundly deep to her that she would put her career on the line. For Max, he’s definitely aware but for him it’s connecting the rest of the dots. It’s like he has all these feelings and doesn’t know what to do with them. He vocalizes it but does it in a way where it’s still “safe.” There’s no denying that he loves her deeply. His longing looks and constant declarations of his need and want for her tells us that but it’s at the cusps still and hasn’t fully broken through where the realization he’s deeply in love with her has smacked him in the face. It will soon but either way, for both of them the angst will be on level 10 and they won’t know what to do with their feelings.
This season will NOT be about Max and a potential new love interest but will more likely be about Max being a single dad while dealing with his growing feelings for Helen that he refuses to act on. Ever since David Schulner’s interview so many people interpreted that interview like Max was going to have a potential new love interest. First of all, I usually take all showrunner interviews with a grain of salt. Second of all, that has never been my interpretation of the interview. If anything I’ve always interpreted the interview as Sculner giving us hints of the upcoming angst between Max and Sharpe and Max coming to the realization that he’s in love with Sharpe despite his best efforts to resist it. Now that this episode has premiered, I could be wrong but I would confidently put money down and say that my prediction is where the show is heading. Also, that doesn’t mean that Max potentially dating someone new is out of the realm of possibility but it’s the context in how he does it. If Max does decide to date you best believe it’s going to follow true romantic trope form and be under the guise of him trying to get over the woman he’s truly enthralled with.
With that being said, I’m beyond exited for what’s to come for the two of them. One thing I will say though in regards to Helen is that despite love, I hope she chooses what’s right for her and her career. She owes it to herself and is completely worthy of that! I also hope that Max will continue to see her wants and needs. That he’ll listen to her more and continue to trust her and most importantly continue to fight for the things that matter to HER!

Sharpwin Analysis 3x01
It’s been a while. Far too long actually. I hope you have been keeping well or at least trying to, in the midst of all this chaos that seems difficult to endure at times. If you’re reading this, I’m so grateful you’re still alive! Being alive is sometimes enough. Nevertheless, I’m kinda sorta back with writing my random Sharpwin analyses. I overthink and perhaps it serves me well in this area to share my deep thoughts with you.
I had my qualms about the show tackling the pandemic but I must say how incredibly pleased I was with the first five minutes of this episode. I was in a stream of my own salty tears just savoring how tastefully done that montage was. I tip my hat off to the writers, producers and actors of this show for navigating what could’ve otherwise been a disaster.
Moving on........
I’d start with my favorite part of the episode-the rooftop. Perhaps my favorite thing about Sharpwin has been and will always be how they find a safe place in each other. The strongest relationship has the deepest roots. And the roots only reach far and wide because of vulnerability-that willingness to be wide open with the good, bad and ugly.
The rooftop may seem like some random place to many. To me it isn’t. To them [Sharpwin] it isn’t. That rooftop isn’t just a place of isolation and solitude to feel the crisp NYC air hit your skin at night or find warmth in the heat of the day. It’s a place they share together. It’s a place that represents everything their relationship is and hopefully, will always be.
Max said it himself in the episode that the rooftop is the safest place in New York when Helen challenged him that he was in her spot. One could think he was talking about the physical place alone. I prefer to think he was talking about the person he was sharing that space with too. Helen knows Max is her safe place to land; her safety net. For Max, Helen is too. I know we’ve all complained about the one sided nature of their relationship, but given the upcoming storylines for Helen, one can only hope that we really see Max now being her “all of the above.”
In season 1, Helen used the rooftop to hide and Max had the same idea. How lucky they were to hide in each other and find a place where they could lay their deepest fears out in the open without fear of being judged or criticized! What I’ve come to appreciate is the sometimes silent understanding that often passes between them. An approval of sorts that says to the other person with merely a head nod or eye contact, “I see you and I understand you.” I know as an audience we sometimes want more words but some moments don’t need them. Non verbal communication could be just as strong as verbal communication (especially when you have the right actors.)
One of the most important things that happened on that rooftop was this, “How’s OUR Miss Luna?” Helen has been easing into this possessiveness of Luna since last season. Last season she called her “MY munchkin.” Though we haven’t seen them interact as much as we may have wanted, I reckon the use of a possessive adjective was deliberate. Maybe it foreshadows the trajectory of this season for Helen, Max and Luna or further along in the future. Ryan did say in several interviews leading up to the premiere, that Max would come to realization that he needs help with Luna-help that isn’t so far away (Georgia’s parents in Connecticut.) Further to that, Max will be thinking about a romantic interest at some point. There’s no one else who would fit the role of his romantic partner and a co-parent to Luna, better than Helen. The same Helen who wants to be a parent but doesn’t want to do it alone. I mean, it all makes sense, doesn’t it?
Then it was Max’s words.... “something better for Luna, something better for you [Helen]...” Even if Max doesn’t know (though I doubt that), he loves that woman in a way that feels permanent. It isn’t some fleeting desire that could change as fast as the the direction of the wind. He’s in it for the long haul. How am I so sure of that? That episode where they spoke about dying wishes proved that. Those words last night only reinforced that. Helen is not leaving his life. Not now. Not ever. Maybe he says these deep words without an awareness of the magnitude of what he’s saying (Again, I doubt that. I think it’s denial on his end and probably fear). But it’s deep. It’s so very deep. Has his heart been betraying him all this time exposing secrets his mind has yet to catch on to? Who knows?!
His confessions of:
“Because I love my doctor”
“But what if I want you?”
“I’m willing to partner. Be my partner.”
“But I do favor you.”
...have been speaking for him. Speaking for what his heart truly wants-Helen and only Helen.
His heart has always known. It knew since his eyes first landed on Helen’s sauntering gait across the floors of New Amsterdam in S1E1, and he turned to Dora after their exchange and said, “I like her.” It was only like then, but that like became love the more vulnerable they became with each other.
Did you notice Max asking Helen when her beeper went off, “Oh, so am I boring you?” When did he get like this? When did he become this person that thinks Helen Sharpe is his and nothing and no one else can have her attention when they’re together? Perhaps this is a harbinger of what’s to come since Cassian will be subject of her attention (and maybe even affection) for a short stint this season.
Did you see the way he looked at her as soon as the song reached “And I think to myself, what a wonderful world?” They are literally everything! I also loved how the camera keep panning to Max and Helen having eye contact. I don’t know if it’s just me but Sharpwin had a different vibe in this episode. I’m good with words but to try to explain it to you might be difficult. They felt solid? Stronger than ever? Like a real couple? It was just a stark contrast from season 2 for me.
Additionally, one of the things I noticed was Helen not being comfortable with contact, yet she initiated contact with Max when they stood outside Kapoor’s ICU room. With Max it’s different. It will always be different.
Sharpwin has that je ne sais quois. I’ve tried to use words to make sense of them but my best words would fail to encapsulate how special they really are. There is something characteristically organic about them that leaves me awestruck every single time. That is all Ryan and Freema. They make these characters come to life in a way that I think no two other people could. I’m honestly so grateful that the writers saw what they did in the pilot and decided to take a chance on them. They are the gift that keeps on giving.
Peter Horton (EP) said in an interview, “That relationship was a discovery for us. We never planned for them to have this longing for each other until we saw the pilot. The two of them just have this chemistry that is undeniable, so we just followed it.”
According to Peter Horton in another interview, “I think fans of that relationship [Sharpwin] will not be disappointed this season. I think they’ll enjoy the journey they go on, for better or for worse.” Make of that what you will but in the words of dearest Marlene, time will tell.

Wait I’m confused; when I looked up the definition of “sister wife” to make sure I completely undertood the definition of the phrase, it said: “ any of the women married to the same man. “ Which in Arrow’s case, it applies. I mean obviously we all know that technically Oliver and Nyssa’s marriage wasn’t legitimate since it was forced, but Nyssa likes to make a joke of the fact that it happened regardless. So what i’m trying to understand here is why is the joke so bad? It seemed pretty lighthearted to me and kind of added to the humor element of Nyssa teasing Felicity about being “married” to Oliver. Not trying to sound ignorant, I just really don’t understand how this could be seen as homophobic or awful.
Arrow 616 "The Thanatos Guild" Thoughts
Stephen affectionately called this episode “The Lollipop Guild” and I shall sweetly call it my birthday episode. And it was pretty badass, so let’s get down to it.
Nostalgia
I love the brother-sister banter. Kudos to Stephen and Willa for the callback idea to the pilot in the final scene.

It’s been awhile since we had a flashback. It’d be nice if it wasn’t Malcolm Merlyn.
Theroy scenes in the moonlight were cute until it got interrupted. However, Nyssa is consistently strong, and most times I love her snark.
I missed the way Green Arrow growled “Overwatch” on comms.
The Vertigo nod was good foreshadowing to 618 “Fundamentals”.
I missed a good ol’ fashioned sword fight, but the stunts cut too quick, yet the fighting grunts seemed delayed in ADR.
Perfect
Felicity came in with the sister-in-law saved. Loved it. Plus Olicity and Theroy’s glances were the definition of heart eyes emoticon in human form.

William and Thea’s dynamic is on point, and it will be missed.
Oliver called Nyssa out on her true motives.
A half of a whole Felicity to Oliver, Thea to Roy, and it’s symbolic of the vigilante lifestyle. Thea’s reasoning was the kick in the hunter green leather pants Oliver needed until Dragon gets in his veins that is.

The whisper of “Goodbye Speedy” made me a tad emotional.

He is everything she desires a rush of the wind driving down an empty road the smell of coffee in the morning tangled sheets and the sound of heartbeats
he is lost and alone and he doesn’t really know who he is is he made of her, of the people who raised him, of his family? or is he is simply a solider, a cog in the machine, the death giver?

He opened his eyes, one at a time, and gazed upon the stars above him. They seemed dimmer than they had before. Slowly, his other senses came to him. The smells around him were strange, bitter mixed with foliage. His body ached. He moved slightly, feeling the hard ground beneath him. He dragged his fingers through it, it was soft too. How could it feel so hard against his back, but soft on his fingers? This place was strange. Much different than the sandy landscape he was used to back home. He pushed himself up. A low grunt fell from his lips. Everything hurt.
He took in his surroundings. Things he had seen in books, things he knew to be grass, dirt, and trees as well as pieces of his mode of transportation. It was completely destroyed. He couldn’t remember how he ended up here and had no idea where here was. His clothing had barely survived the wreck; his pants and shirt were torn and he had nothing covering his feet.
Stumbling through the wooded area, he found himself on a dark road. A yellow line went down the middle. A vehicle sped past him. The sounds emanating from the machine were so loud, they startled him. More of the bitter smell came from the smoke of the vehicle. He covered his ears and walked faster. Another machine, this time with people hanging out of it, screaming wildly. He took off at a run. The breath was stolen from him. His bare feet pounded against the hard road until a loud roaring noise startled him to a stop. Bright lights blinded him before pain flooded him.

Here’s the thing about people with good hearts. They give you excuses when you don’t explain yourself. They accept apologies you don’t give. They see the best in you when you don’t need them to. At your worst, they lift you up, even if it means putting their priorities aside. The word “busy” does not exist in their dictionary. They make time, even when you don’t. And you wonder why they’re the most sensitive people. You wonder why they’re the most caring people. You wonder why they are willing to give so much of themselves with no expectation in return. You wonder why their existence is not so essential to your well-being. It’s because they don’t make you work hard for the attention they give you. They accept the love they think they’ve earned, and you accept the love you think you’re entitled to. Let me tell you something. Fear the day when a good heart gives up on you. Our skies don’t become gray out of nowhere. Our sunshine does not allow the darkness to take over for no reason. A heart does not turn cold unless it’s been treated with coldness for a while.
