Are your thoughts really YOUR thoughts? Most thoughts just show up in your mind out of nowhere, you can't control them. Of course, if you want to think about something specific, you can do it. But most of the time, you are not making an effort to think about a specific subject, you are simply receiving thoughts from who knows where; what I like to call "automatic thoughts". This is why you shouldn't feel bad or scared when you have dark thoughts, we all have them and you can't control whether you get them or not. What you CAN control, however, is how you react to those thoughts: you can choose to act on them and express them or you can simply observe them and let them go. A lot of people communicate most of the thoughts they have without first analyzing whether they are their own thoughts or simply automatic thoughts. What do I mean by "your own thoughts"? Well, thoughts that align with the values, philosophies, principles and goals you have or aspire to have. So the next time you have a thought, especially a negative or hurtful one, think whether it is your own before expressing it or engaging with it in your mind. Will expressing it help you become the person you want to become? Is it going to hurt other people? What am I hoping to achieve by expressing it? Is it aligned with my values, principles and philosophies? Is it going to help anybody? This is why I think it is really important for everybody to practice mindfulness meditation. By observing your thoughts regularly, you can learn to differentiate between automatic thoughts and your own thoughts, and by creating this awareness, you create a checkpoint between the thoughts you have and the thoughts you choose to engage with and express, and also, by choosing to engage only with thoughts you identify with, you end up cultivating them and "starving out" the other ones, which in turn leads you to be somebody that's more coherent and aligned with the person they want to become. THE PATH Everybody has their own path to walk. It is normal to lose focus every now and then. When we lose focus, when we lose the bigger picture... things may seem pretty pointless. Like we're headed nowhere fast. Sometimes we seem to be going through pointless soul-draining trials whose only goal seems to be to destroy us. But that is never the case, every single experience but especially the challenging ones have made you the person you are right now as they taught you skills and lessons that you required in the future to get to where you are and to where you wanna go. So if you feel like nothing makes sense, ask yourself the following questions: am I doing what I want to do, or am I stuck in a habit/commitment? What is this situation triggering within me? What can I learn from this situation? The trials will always be there, that's one of the unmovable foundations of life. We cannot change that. But what we can change is our perspective on them, we can choose to participate consciously and try to learn as much as possible. There is no stronger joy than personal evolution. Learning to understand and overcome your faults, confrontations and obstacles while remaining understanding and loving to yourself is one of the most fulfilling quests to embark on. So if nothing makes sense, just remember that there are always pieces to be added and that everything will come together in the end for you, just like it always has done before. Your mind is like a garden. On a garden, everything can grow, beautiful flowers and delicious fruit trees but also invasive weeds and parasitic plants. Good plants, like good thoughts, require a lot of effort and consistency. However, bad plants grow without our effort or awareness, much like bad thoughts, emotions and attitudes in our minds. This is why I believe that we should treat our minds like a great gardener would treat his garden. We should pay attention to every corner of our mind, nurturing the good ideas and feelings, while also removing the bad ones before they're fully developed and have the possibility to multiply, cutting them out at the roots. At the same time, you should be wary of who you let into your mind, as it is extremely easy for ignorant, jealous or insecure people to plant bad seeds or try to destroy all the effort you've put into cultivating what you need. But much like on a garden, it is up to you to let them in or keep them out. So don't invite people who don't deserve to see its beauty into your garden. Taking care of your mind can be exhausting and tedious at times, but it is also very rewarding and necessary; just like in a garden, leaving it unattended will result in the overgrowth of restricting, ugly and negative things. So remove all the negativity, stay away from bad influences and nurture your mind, treat it with love, care, patience and diligence every day. A healthy mind is the best thing you can work towards. I've seen a lot of people that feel sad, angry, overwhelmed and powerless due to current world events. And to those people I just wanna say: You are completely justified in feeling this way, the world we live in is a terrible place and it is becoming more evident every day... Disease, racism, injustice, pedophile rings, environmental disasters and corruption, just to name a few things that have been brought to our attention recently. It's understandable that we could feel overwhelmed by all this, HOWEVER, the fact that we are experiencing all of this and being outraged by it at the same time is a good sign, a sign that people are becoming more and more aware of these terrible things happening all the time in the world, a sign that we will no longer tolerate these things and that indifference won't be an option anymore. Big changes are coming up and dealing with this terrible world won't be easy. Things are gonna be chaotic and uncomfortable for some time but just trust that this is necessary for the birth of a more empathic, more caring, more loving and overall BETTER WORLD. So instead of being overwhelmed because this old world is dying, be EXCITED about the unprecedented GREAT NEW WORLD ahead of us. The phrase "we can't change the world unless we change ourselves" is now as relevant as it has ever been so if you find yourself feeling powerless over the things you have no control over remember that there are things you CAN control, starting by yourself. Look for the things you can improve within yourself to make this world a better place and also figure out how you can help the people around you. "Once you stop learning you start dying." -Albert Einstein This quote does not only apply to academic learning. Every single day brings new learning opportunities through experience, people, accidents, thoughts, art, books, the internet, news... You can never get to the bottom of the barrel as it is constantly expanding; every answer shines the light on a thousand new questions. One of the undeniable purposes of life is exactly this: learning. First you learn about basic perception through your senses: seeing, hearing, tasting, touch. Once you've figured that out, you can start learning about feelings and the basic aspects of the world like the creatures and objects that inhabit it and the laws of physics they are subjected to. Eventually you start "learning" in the conventional way, going to school and learning endless amounts of facts and concepts. Beginning in childhood, you start learning about relationships: family, friendship and love. Having a basic understanding of that, you learn to see, analyze and understand the connection between people, you start learning about society. From that point on, you start questioning who you are and what your place in this society is and you start learning who you are and who you want to be. The point of it is not to learn everything so you don't have to ever learn anything else again, but to never stop learning. If you think you've learned everything about the aspects I just mentioned, I am sorry to break it to you but you are already dying... The universe is constantly changing and expanding and it doesn't wait for anyone so if you're not keeping up, you'll be left behind. "Only when we are brave enough to explore the darkness will we discover the infinite power of our light" -Brene Brown Everybody has some form of darkness within them. Most people try to bury this darkness, ignore it, hide it from everyone and themselves. However, this can be very bad because you can't control what you can't see. Do you wanna have a mysterious monster in a dark room and just wait for it to attack anytime? Or would you rather have a well tamed monster and make it work for you? Once you are aware of your demons, they can have no control over you. So explore your darkness. "We all live under the same sky, but we don't all have the same horizon." -Konrad Adenauer I love people that wanna do what has never been done, go where no one else has, reach new heights. Everything is impossible until that one "crazy" person comes along and does it. And it's not because they're better than everybody else, it's because they just don't accept the limitations set upon them by everybody else. Every single person can change the world, do the unfathomable. YOU can be that person, start by destroying your self imposed limitations and go from there. You will be surprised how many things you thought impossible were simply so in your mind. And if you can apply that in your own life, what's stopping you from applying it in the world? Expand your horizons, life starts once you go beyond your comfort zone. "Rather than being your thoughts and emotions, be the awareness behind them." -Eckhart Tolle This is my favorite quote of all time. It is just SO powerful. What this means is that you cannot control what you think or how you feel, it just comes to you. You can, however, control how you react to those thoughts and feelings. Instead of immediately acting on them you can choose to recognize them, sit with them, feel them, accept them, understand where they are coming from and then detach yourself from them. You are simply sitting in a theater, watching thoughts and feelings play out. Most of us are tricked into thinking that we ARE those thoughts and feelings, but to do that is just as ridiculous as going to the theater and thinking that you are the play. So don't be the thinker, observe the thinker. A Better Future? I was talking with a friend the other day about how the educational system in most countries has failed fundamentally. From early on, we are taught that we have to learn in order to pass the exams in order to progress to the next grade, to be able to graduate, to then be able to go to college and then to be able to get a job and not be a "failure". We are never taught to learn in order to be better, to expand our horizons, to broaden our minds. Another aspect where I think we are failing is that we are not teaching VALUES and PURPOSE in our schools... what is the point of having all of this knowledge if you have no perspective on how to use it for good, beyond your monetary gain? Many people do everything right according to the system: they get good grades, get into a good university and then get a good job but they STILL feel UNFULFILLED and that's because life is much more deeper than just earning money. I believe in a future where the educational system teaches love for learning, fundamental values and how to find what drives you and then encourages you and gives you all the tools and resources required to move in that direction, achieve your goals and also pushes you to think beyond yourself and how you can use your natural skills and drive to make the world a better place. I don't pretend to have all the answers but I definitely think that we need to restructure the system according to our ideal world. How can we expect a better future if our educational system is not aligned with our goals? Set YOUR Target Every single day people wake up and go to a job they hate, to talk with people they dislike and do things that do not matter for 8 hours straight, only to go back home to watch some TV and see the latest drama to forget about how shitty their life is. And then on the weekends they meet up with people that they don't really like to maintain a certain image. And the system we live in is designed to make us believe that this is not only okay but something to strive for. Eat, sleep, work and repeat for 300+ days a year only to have two weeks off to "relax", although most people can't even truly relax because they are haunted by the idea that after their two weeks are over, they have to go back to slaving away to increase the numbers in their bank account and have this illusion of safety. This pandemic has shown us that it is merely that, an illusion. Because once shit hits the fan and businesses aren't allowed to function, when people start dying left and right, when you can't go outside... that's when you realize that all the work you've done amounts to numbers on a screen and is totally worthless on the larger scale. This is a chance to reconnect with what is truly important to you. Is that job really more important than spending time with your loved ones? Is that career you are pursuing gonna fulfill you in a deep and meaningful way or are you just doing it to be safe? Are your "friends" really your friends or just people to kill time with? Are you using your time wisely or just wasting it watching trash on the internet/TV? Were all those hours of work worth it? Do you have enough material things to convince yourself that you are happy? Was all that time and effort you spent trying to project this image of yourself for other people worth it? If the answer to those questions is "no", don't you think you deserve better? OF COURSE you do. So take some time for yourself and figure out what is truly important to you, what deeply motivates you and what you really want out of life. You don't have to settle. You don't have to do what everybody else is doing. There is an alternative: DO WHAT YOU WANT TO DO! Set YOUR TARGET and SHOOT YOUR SHOT! "Man is so made that when anything fires his soul, impossibilities vanish" -Jean de La Fontaine Every second brings endless possibilities. The only restrictions on your life are the ones YOU accept. The world is currently a dream destroying machine and the only people who can realize their dreams are the ones that ignore everybody and everything that's telling them a million reasons why they shouldn't pursue them. The people who give up on their dreams to go for the "safe path" never seem happy, do they? Nobody's ever went the safe way and been happy about it, so what is even the point of playing it safe? Think about how many opportunities you've missed so far because you let other people or even yourself convince you that what you wanted was impossible. Why can't you be that person? Why can't you do that? Why can't you go there? Why can't you have that? Most times, the answer is you. Do you want to be a dreamer forever filled with regrets and "what-ifs" or an achiever? It's on you to make the jump. Find your dreams and make them a reality.
