Inefficent Ways of doing Pre-Existing Things
A short dnd story of how I slipped flight through my dms wing-hating fingers
So, I was in a naval campaign with 4 other players awhile back, the party consisted of:
Malakai the Human Swashbuckler
Ferrus the Teifling Conquest Paladin
Greg the Tempest Barbarian
Lucile the Battle Master Fighter
And lastly, my character, Ami Nissa the Changeling Old One Warlock
My initial idea for a character was a Parrot Aarakocra, but our DM quickly expresses his hatred for flight in DnD, so I made my silly little genderless squid worshiper instead. The campaign went great for a good year or so before we hit level 9, and thats when I realized something about an Evocation warlocks get:
Ascendant Step
Source: Player's Handbook
Prerequisite: 9th level
You can cast levitate on yourself at will, without expending a spell slot or material components. (Thanks DnDWikidot)
Much earlier at Level 4, I picked up Sorcerer Initiate for some extra versatility, and grabbed the Gust cantrip to help push our boat on still days. Well, I had the idea that I could cast Gust on myself while levitating for a sort of 'Lazy, Infinite Flight' if you will. Well, after doing it the first time, the DM was *LIVID,* but I talked to him after the session, telling him that "Its slow, inefficent, and I cant avoid things easily." He soon (very reluctantly) agreed to let me keep this pesudo-flying, and Ami went on to almost never touch the ground again for the next 3 years of that campaign...
If you have any similar stories, please do tell! I love hearing about work arounds to imposed restrictions!
