TiE Retail SIG: Jumpstarting the Retail Entrepreneurial Ecosystem, 21 Apr 2012 TiE Retail event held on April 21, 2012 saw the launch of TiE SIG (Special Interest Group). This group will become a platform for retail entrepreneurs to network, listen to industry experts, interact with leaders and takeaway best practices on being successful in the retail industry. This group will see participation from successful retail business leaders, retail consultants, and venture capitalists, and will provide opportunities to have direct communication with eminent experts and have other mentoring sessions. The event saw an active participation with a packed hall of more than 150 members. S. R. Gopalan, President, TiE Bangalore gave the welcome address and Hemu Javeri, Ajoy Krishnamurti and Sherif Kottapurath launched the SIG Retail. Keynote was given by Dr. Gibson G. Vedamani, Industry Expert and Mentor. The subjects for the panel discussions were “Is Indian e-commerce eco-system ready for the next growth wave?” (Panelists: Vaitheeswaran, Indiaplaza, K, Ganesh, TutorVista, Bharati Jacob, Seedfund. Moderator: Ajoy Krishnamurti) and “How can new-age physical retail co-exist and flourish with the e-commerce generation?” (Panelists: Kabir Lumba, Lifestyle, Kiran Nadkarni, KaatiZone, Ajith George, Sysfore. Moderator: Hemu Javeri). Amuleek Singh Bijral, Founder, Chai Point shared his story. Ajith Mathew George of Sysfore who was part of the second panel shared his experience: “Retail industry has matured so much in India and the organized retail sector which is only 5% of the total size is growing at a very fast pace. The physical retail which used to depend a lot on people is now adopting to industry best practices and technology to bring in more efficiency and to compete against the rising cost of real estate, people issues, pilferage, inflation. The industry has widely accepted the fact that technology will play a vital role in all the future growth. Some of the key areas where technology will be critical are: just in time sourcing, inventory management, efficient forecasting, pricing and promotions, multi-channel sales and business intelligence. Even for start-ups it is advised to look for open source based retail solutions which are more affordable. It is easier to implement a process if you are using it from the initial stages of the business. It is important to understand that the business formats and items are all changing according to the market dynamics and any solution adopted should be able to adapt to such scenarios. Mr. Kabir Lumba of Lifestyle spoke about the growing competition among the organized retailers and the importance of right pricing of the products. He spoke about the emphasis the group gave in the last couple of years for streamlining their existing business and increasing the revenue to over 2000Cr. The most important aspect for them was not to just open stores, but increase profitability from their existing stores. He highlighted the successful implementation of an integrated ERP solution across all its stores. Their priority even today is not e-commerce or other channels, but more revenue from existing stores, better customer service and offering the right kind of products to the consumers. Mr. Kiran Nandkarni, spoke in briefly about his stint as VC in previous roles and then about his journey as an entrepreneur. Kaati Zone, under his dynamic leadership, has grown to establish a strong brand presence in the region. They offer a very standardized menu, ensure the same taste and quality for every item they offer. Item standardization is one of the key aspects they have taken care of by adopting various processes internally. The second most important success factor for them is their quick service of orders; time between order taking and order delivery is optimized and customers are very happy with the short delivery.” The event concluded with Dr. Gibson Vedamani, Hemand Jhaveri, Ajoy Krishnamurthy & Sheriff Kottapurathu leading the “Mentor Interaction” & “Investor Interaction” sessions mentioning about the leadership for the SIG group.

India Retail Forum 2011 (IRF) 2011:
20 – 21 September, 2011 (Day 1)
Retail Funding: Everything you always wanted to know about funding and evaluation
Ajith Mathew George, Director – Projects of Sysfore Technologies, who was at the India Retail Forum (IRF) 2011, held in Mumbai at Hotel Renaissance, said the panel discussion set off with a great point – “Grow or Die”. Over 60% of the panel believes that even if you don’t grow as planned you will die. He shares more of his experience:
“Mr. Hem Javeri of Forum Synergies quoted that a lot of retail in India is currently unviable.  Mr. Sandeep Naik of Apax Partners commented that the biggest mistake all the retail chains make is the massive roll outs without stabilizing or optimizing their current business model. He also highlighted that most companies forget to understand the pulse of their customers. This is critical especially for the apparels or fashion industry as customers dump products without any mercy.
Treat fund raising on a need and not as a milestone was the advice from Mr. Kapur.  Mr. Monish Gujral had a different view and a request for equity partners voicing the point that they should share the passion of the founders of the company.
Mr. Hem Javeri played a very good role as the moderator not only in setting the base for the panel, but also by mixing questions between the equity partners and retail companies.”

India Retail Forum 2011 (IRF) 2011:
20 – 21 September, 2011 (Day 1)
FDI in Retail: Understanding the issues
One of the major discussions of India Retail Forum (IRF) 2011, held in Mumbai at Hotel Renaissance, was on FDI in retail. Ajith Mathew George, Director – Projects of Sysfore Technologies, who was at IRF 2011 shares some views:
“Mr. Abheek Singhi pointed out that organized retail in India is still a single digit figure less than 5%. He added that after liberalization the SSI sector only doubled in each decade since the 80s and hence there is no need to worry about FDI liberalization. FDI in China, Brazil and Thailand has shown growing tax revenues for the government and has also removed tax evaders.
According to Mr. Ajit Joshi, it is mostly the Indian IT supporting retail globally and oversees players are not going to bring in major tech break-through to retail IT. FDI in retail means involvement in every aspect of the lifecycle of retail sector including supply chain, manufacturing, logistics, warehousing, IT, store design, etc., says Raj Jain of Walmart.
The traders association represented by Mr. Bhartia and Mr. Viren couldn't justify the opposition made by them against FDI in retail. Rajiv Kumar, Secretary General of FICCI said it may take minimum of 2 years for the Indian government to make a decision on FDI in retail.
NDTV anchor Manvi Dhillon did a wonderful job in maintaining a lively panel.”
Post-script:  FDI in Retail continues to be a contentious issue in India. Since the conference, the Government of India announced  measures  to enourage more FDI into the Retail sector. It has subsequently put these measures on hold due to objections from Opposition parties, and certain sectors of India society.

India Retail Forum 2011 (IRF) 2011:
20 – 21 September, 2011
Pre-inaugural and Inaugural Sessions
India Retail Forum (IRF) 2011, held in Mumbai at Hotel Renaissance this year, is considered to be one of India’s leading retail events. IRF 2011 brought together the most innovative and successful retail brands, companies and minds from across the globe and the entire retail support universe, including retail real estate, design & architecture, merchandise & services, visual merchandising, security and technology. Ajith Mathew George, Director – Projects of Sysfore Technologies, was at IRF 2011 and shares his experience:
“The venue had multiple halls for running parallel sessions for attendees to explore opportunities of their interest. The pre-inaugural session saw Ireena Vittal – Principal, McKinsey, and Professor Piyush Sinha – Chairperson, Centre for Retailing, IIM-A, discussing the impact of Macro Economic Indicators and trends on individual retail businesses. Ireena’s thoughts on realizing consumption through reliable and successful channels of communication to the customer and how the information is valued by the customer, and Piyush’s factual points on current retail industry and opinion that ‘retailers should be ready to fail or to change at this stage’ made this a very interesting session.
The inaugural session was moderated by Kishore Biyani of Future Group, Bijou Kurian – President  & CE – Lifestyle, Reliance Retail Ltd and Thomas Varghese – the giants of Indian retail. The gathering was welcomed by Jayant Kochar – Chairman, Images Group. Kurian spoke on ‘the opportunity among chaos‘ whereas Thomas Varghese expressed his appreciation for the government initiative to bring in changes to FDI in retail sector. Biyani is positive that rural retail will be the next big focus for all the existing players.
Attendees YashwantM, anish_trivedi, ajithmg, chigateri, bobby_varghese, sysfore, akinak87 made the event trending in twitterverse with live tweets on discussions on e-commerce, multi brand FDI in retail, rural retail, retail technologies, concerns of small retailers, data mining, social media, online and offline retail, etc.”
