Week 9 - 22/MarĀ
Feeling: CANāT BELIEVE ITāS ALREADY THE FINAL LESSON
Itās the presentation day today, a chance to listen to other groups to introduce and talk more about their newspapers.
Looking back to the previous lessons, I found myself really enjoy and I always look forward to having the next lesson, there is always something new to learn.
- Definitions of design
- Definition of research (not only the common primary, secondary & tertiary research, but also observational research)
- Different levels of visual messages
- Context (important to consider while designing)
- Purpose of critiques (attitude of giving and receiving)
I love doing the class exercise and activities, I feel like this course is experiencing and exploring more than just simply telling conceptual ideas, which makes this course really fun and attractive.
Thank you!!

Week 8 - 8/Mar
Feeling: satisfying
Our newspaper is out!!
Tina and I feel so satisfied with our work, we both paid our greatest effort to the outcome. Today we have read each othersā newspapers in class and gave them feedbacks, I enjoy reading them a lot, there is so much to learn from.
I like to layout of our newspaper, neat and tidy, easy to read and it looks like a newspaper. Our peers have gave us many feedbacks, some mentioned that the message deliver is clear, the colour scheme is calm, composition is easy to read etc. Other than that, some also mentioned that they like the Letter from the Editor part, it makes readers feel warm and the topic of the newspaper less boring.
To do better next time, I think we could add more colours on the first page, like pictures or some decorative elements. Many of the feedbacks are pretty much similar, like adding graphic to attract our readers, some also suggested to make the name of our newspaper stands out more.
Overall there is more to improve, but I am already satisfied with our work and feel really proud of our teamwork. Yayyy!!

Week 7 - 1/Mar
Feeling: smooth
Had many discussions with Tina today, we are required to fill in the google slides as a group. Our ideas are very similar, therefore there arenāt disagreements when discussing on audience, context and the container.
For the audience part, we are clear about what we want our readers to know, and how we want to influence them. We aim to inspire our readers and encourage them to make changes. Our target audience are adults suffering from stress (especially working class) and people who donāt feel like they are on the right track. By understanding what is lifelong learning, readers will be able to realise the importance of it, we hope this will further increase their willingness to make some changes in their lives.
Talking about the context, Tina and I both agree that our readers may undergo the process of deep thinking while or after reading our newspaper, therefore it is recommended to read in a comfortable environment where there is no interruptions, so that our readers can have their own time and space to think. Week 6 - 22/Feb
Feeling: surprised
Making my own field notes is more fun and interesting than I imagined haha
I seldom just draw and record down what I see, it is a very special experience. We watched a video for the first field note, it was not easy as there are too many things to record down, so I can only choose whatās important and significant to record. Things canāt be too detailed, if not Iāll miss out many things in my field note, sometimes Iāll have to depend on my memory when Iām too slow.Ā For the second field note, I chose to observe from the window in my room (actually it will be just the same for most of the windows in my home, same direction looking at the same view anyway). It was rainy and people were with their umbrellas, I was never aware of number of people walking pass down there at the park, so I decided to observe on something I usually wonāt notice for the field note. I recorded the colours of umbrellas that people uses, also whether they are walking towards this building or away from it (people with body are walking towards, only legs are walking away). I tried to record the environment, but I was only halfway through, I guess I was just too concentrated on observing people and forgot about the scenery. Anyway, itās a fun experience, it makes me calm by doing one thing concentratedly.

Week 5 - 15/FebĀ
Feeling: long lecture today~
The main topic of the class today is basically talking about the levels of visual messages. After all the explanations, I have concluded the definitions of those levels in a simple way...
Lv.1 Representation: basically representing something visually
Lv.2 Symbolism: representing something in a simplified way
Lv.3 Abstraction: representing the significance of something in a more simplified way
As a CD student, we often create visual messages in graphic way,Ā I found this lecture very useful and meaning. Level 1 should be easy to achieve for not only CD students, but also for most people, it is the basic to represent something (like an object), for example by simply sketching and drawing it out. Currently I believe I could only reach level 2, I love doing graphic works like logo designs, I believe my ability is more than just representing something with my work, I inserted more meaning to it instead. Now, level 3 will be my goal for the following time, wish I could achieve this level soon in the future, I believe achieving that will equip me well for being a graphic designer one day.

Week 4 - 8/Feb
Feeling: so tiredā¦didnāt sleep well last night
This week we submitted our symbols in different sizes, and also 2 versions: colour, black & white.
Many details can be observed from the sizes and use of colours. Some symbols work in any sizes, while some may work better only in specific size. The colour choice is also important, it is more appropriate to pick a colour related to the topic (which is kind of difficult for lifelong learning) but it is definitely better to pick a colour that will make people relate to their topic. A fun observation with many founding, I always love to see othersā works, it gives me so many inspiration!!

Week 3 - 25/Jan
Feeling: sad⦠having lesson at home⦠sigh
The class was divided into two parts, class critique and conducting group research.
Class critique: footprint has the strongest sense of showing the topic, but the circle one seems to be more interesting with the idea. The circle is formed by little circled that are closely connect together, except for the two circles that represents begin and end are just only touching one another. It symbolises the start and end of our lives, while those connected circles symbolises our life journey, including the challenges we overcome, the milestones we have reached etc.
Group research: effective discussion, we have discussed on the target audience of our newspaper and the research questions, which will be focused during the process of creating the content of our newspaper.

Week 2 - 18/Jan
Feeling: very enjoyable Ā >_<
Appreciating othersā works gives me inspiration
It was so much fun to look at othersā works, it allows me to know how people think and develop their ideas. As each group has different topics, I was able to learn what people will imagine and link up to their chosen topic. Some groups has fascinating and bold ideas, bring me many inspiration and surprises at the same time. The lesson was so much fun, I really enjoyed it!!

Week 1 - 11/Jan
Feeling: EXCITED
Welcome to my blog, this is Melody Chan! I am going to record my CD2 learning journal here, by tracking what we have done in class and my personal thoughts.
We have discussed about definition of design in class, many of us have mentioned something related communication, communicating with our target audience, communicating with clients⦠The firstĀ ācommunicationā I have done during this class is to decide on the topic with my group mate, Tina. Iāve picked Lifelong learning, we think this is something deep and meaning; Tina picked Cooking, which is something fun and interesting. After a long discussion and comparison between the two topics, we have decided to work on Lifelong Learning by Rock Paper Scissors (hahaaa) looking forward to working with Tina together later~
Canāt wait to see the final outcome of our newspaper!!
