Iconic Personalities🌟- Featured & Helped by Different Types of Media

          Hello everyone! It’s Kathleen Heleina M. Eusebio, a student from National University Fairview. In our Media and Information Literacy class, we are tasked to have a research about three iconic or famous personalities in the field of accounting, business, and management who have been featured in print, broadcast, and new media. For this blog, I will first make a short introduction about these three iconic or famous personalities in the field of accounting, business, and management, so that we’ll get to know them first before proceeding to the questions that we are asked to answer in this blog.

          In the field of accounting, I found Luca Pacioli, the father of accounting. “His 1494 publication of Everything about Arithmetic, Geometry, and Proportions book and double-entry accounting book are considered as two of his greatest contributions in accounting. He also introduced the use of journals and ledgers in accounting systems and said that the accountant must not sleep until the debits are equaled to credits. The ledgers he introduced were based on assets receivables and inventories, liabilities, capital, expenditure and income accounts.           In the field of business, I found Bill Gates, who is hailed as one of the richest men in the world based on Forbes. “Entrepreneur and businessman Bill Gates and his business partner Paul Allen founded and built the world's largest software business, Microsoft, through technological innovation, keen business strategy and aggressive business tactics.           In the field of management, I found Henry Ford, the founder of Ford Motor Company. In our Organization and Management Class, Henry ford is said to be one of the contributors of Scientific Management Theory. He was also the first one to install the assembly line. “Henry Ford and other manufacturers fueled the American economy by improving productivity. They also raised standards of living by creating more high-paying jobs. It is important to highlight the fact that Ford employed a concept that revolved around mass production of inexpensive goods and high wages for workers ."           The father of accounting, Luca Pacioli, was featured in new media. In order for me to compare and contrast the way Luca Pacioli was featured in new media to other types of media, I search for the biography of Luca Pacioli and I also look for two different websites which are LinkedIn written by Tushar Rathod, a trustworthy accountant with four years of experience in finance and accounts, and Wikipedia. The founder of the Ford Motor Company, Henry Ford, was featured in print media, the Time magazine, but he also had his own magazine, the Ford Times magazine which has variety of topics that also includes the article "Assimilation through Education". The co-founder of Microsoft Corporation, Bill Gates, was featured in broadcast media, he has a three-part Netflix docuseries titled Inside Bill’s Brain: Decoding Bill Gates.  

            After searching for these iconic personalities in the field of Accounting, Business, & Management, and find out what type of media they are featured, I finally have ideas on how am I going to compare and contrast how they are featured in each media type. When I search for Luca Pacioli, I found LinkedIn and Wikipedia, there are differences because in Wikipedia, it is said that the book that was published that made him recognized as the father of accounting is all about double-entry bookkeeping, while in LinkedIn, it is said that it is all about double-entry accounting. It has different information that we don’t even know what is reliable or not, so I check the author’s credentials and chose to believe in LinkedIn because the author’s credentials are there, he is a trustworthy accountant with four years of experience in finance and accounts,  while in Wikipedia anyone can revise it. That’s how Luca Pacioli differs from other types of media when he was featured in new media considering that in print media and broadcast media, in order for a work to be published or showed, they have a lot of process and credible sources should be there, while in new media anyone can share their work and information without putting any credentials and credible sources. In terms of being reliable and accurate, new media has the least reliability and accuracy.  When I search for Henry Ford, I saw that he became the cover of Time Magazine, the information is limited because you need to buy the magazine to get all the information that is written on it. I search again for a magazine where Henry Ford was featured and there I saw Ford Times magazine but again, there is limited information, the only thing that is written there is the summary of what does the magazine contain. I still look for other print media where Henry Ford was featured, and I saw a newspaper article about how he introduced the assembly line. I think that’s how Henry Ford differs from other types of media when he was featured in print media, you need to pay first before getting all the information unless it’s given for free, while in new and broadcast media, there are only selected sites where you need to pay. In print media, you have the hard copy or the physical object where the information is written or printed so you can keep it, while in new and broadcast media, you can only see the information through a screen or hear it in a radio. When I search for Bill Gates, I saw that he has a docuseries in Netflix that shows the basics of Gates’ life: his childhood, education, Microsoft stewardship, marriage to his wife Melinda, and the charitable foundation they co-manage. I realize here that when it comes to entertainment, broadcast media is better than other types of media because people will be more interested and pleased when they see moving pictures. People will further understand the life of Bill Gates because they can see the emotions of the characters in docuseries, unlike in print media and new media, we have different interpretations of words and sentences.

          Although Luca Pacioli was featured in New Media, he showed his knowledge and skills by the use of print media. In 1494, he published his own books about double-entry accounting system and Everything about Arithmetic, Geometry, and Proportions. His publication of a book that described the double-entry accounting made him recognize as the father of accounting. Because of his use of print media, the systems that he wrote in his book are still use in modern accounting. A lot of accountants are still using journals and ledgers, but were improve because of the technology that we have in our generation, the use of digital technologies, also called as new media. In a docuseries of Netflix titled Inside Bill’s Brain, it shows how Bill Gates and his friend Paul Allen used new media to build their own company, Microsoft, that makes computer software. In 1978, their sales topped more than $1 million because of their use of new media. Microsoft Corporation said that technology is a powerful force for good and are working to foster a sustainable future where everyone has access to the benefits and opportunities created by technology.  Although he didn’t own the Microsoft Corporation anymore, Bill Gates and his wife have Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation where they bring computers and digital information to the communities they serve, so that they can provide technical training and support for library staffs in low-income communities and they are also excited to help libraries ensure that children and adults from all walks of life will have access to the wealth of information and understanding that computers and digital information make possible. In June 1915, the first Ford Time magazine was released. It has monthly publication where you can see commercial product, meant to promote Ford automotive products, the overarching theme was to get out and see our country by car. It helped Henry Ford to advertise his  automotive products through his magazine, the magazine also includes the article "Assimilation through Education" that explains why Ford saw it necessary for employees to learn English. Aside from Ford Times magazine and Time magazine, Henry Ford was also featured in a newspaper. By the use of newspaper or print media, one of the greatest innovations of Henry Ford had been featured, the assembly line. It has shaped the industrial world so strongly that businesses that did not adopt the practice soon became extinct, and it was one of the key factors that helped integrate the automobile into American society.

          No matter what type of media we have, we should be a media and information literate. We are responsible in sharing and getting information. We must know if the information that we share or get is reliable and accurate. As a responsible producer and consumer of information, we should be skillful in showing and making informed judgement.

Today we shared out PITCH ideas with the whole class.

UPLIFT - “raise the bar”

ITS?

I’ve looked into the general definition of ITS a lot through the semester so what does it mean for my PITCH idea? Let’s break it down into the three parts of ITS

Interactivity  - The incorporation and influence of digital technologies with exercise (Wikipedia, 2019).

Technology - The technological advancement that allows and encourages improvements (Men’s Journal, 2018).

Systems - The evolution of technology through a form of interaction (Wikipedia, 2019).The overall definition interaction between a person, digital technologies and exercise; step into the future.

So how and why does my idea relate to ITS? Why is it important?

It is digital virtual assistance, meaning it helps make daily tasks easier for the user.

It is an accurate progress tracker, meaning it reduces the bias, and room for error.

It is an improvement tool, meaning it is designed to benefit the user and their needs.

It calculates statistics, meaning it creates less work for the user with everything they need in front of them, even more accurate. (real time and post workout).

It creates less third-party involvement, no longer do you have to calculate rep maxes, percentages, weights - it does it all for you.

It is an educational advancement, it is a teaching tool more intelligent than anyone.

It incorporates the technology of the future, self-lacing shoes, wearable technology, this sort of technology is only starting out.

INSPIRATION

My inspiration initially came from my passion and love for the gym, sport, and fitness. I wanted my idea to reflect my character and I think a lot of who I am is based on my involvement in sport and exercise. Fitness is such a large avenue which is always being improved and new technologies added so where could I fit in. 

I originally looked into new technologies arising in the fitness industry and then looked at technology advancements that I personally used and this was the outcome. Then from there thought about what was missing to me personally in the fitness industry. 

Picture Number Three & Nine: Under Armour Hovr

Uses an embedded chip and the MapMyRun app to give runners real-time data on their fitness performance as well as post-workout statistics. (Under Armour, 2019).

Picture Number Four & Eight: Nike HyperAdapt

Built around the concept of an adaptive fit which basically means the shoe senses the contours of the foot and tightens the laces just enough to wrap it up snugly. It changes with the athletes changing needs. A cable tights the shoes when movement is detected. (Nike, 2019).

Picture Number Five: Map my Run

Is an accurate distance tracker that uses smartphones GPS. the app reports statistics in real time and can deliver statistics via voice prompts, letting the user know when they have hit predetermined kilometer markers without stopping to check a screen. (Map My Run, 2019).

Picture Number Six: Wodify

Is a CrossFit digital whiteboard system that registers athletes for classes, records workouts, results and remembers the past performance, all in the athlete's personalized profile. (Wodify, 2019).

Picture Number Seven: Reebok Lifters

Designed for weightlifting with a raised heel. They have a massive advantage, as it allowed you to squat deeper, a position through increased ankle range of motion. They are more stable than typically barefoot or minimalist shoes. (Reebok, 2019).

MY CONCEPT

An ‘intelligent gym shoe’ combined with data-driven coaching.

The ultimate gym shoe.

Designed for athletes, to track accurate progress and statistics around pressure, weight, agility and vital signs in real time and post workout. (Keller Sport, 2019).

It enables users to establish personal goal and share results in a 10km radius based on GPS.

FEATURES

Electric adaptable reaction lacing and a built-in sensor. These shoes can self lace themselves once the heel hits the sensor in the inside of the shoe. The lace engine is located in the cavity of the shoe. It electronically adjusts the lacing, pressure and fit the contours of the foot, using a lace cable to make such adjustments. (Nike, 2019).

Embedded chip. These shoes have a nano-sized chip. This sensor technology tracks movement, pressure through the heel, weight through the heel, blood pressure, overload and agility the body is under. It analyses and stores the information in the user’s profile inside the LIFT app.

USB - C charger. Technology needs charging in order to perform. They use and come with a common USB - C charger making it easy for the user to adapt. This follows the usability heuristics around technology which mean it sticks to normality and simplicity for the user. (Sullivan, & Lachman, 2017).

Battery percentage of shoes. The shoes have a small 15 x 25mm screen on the inner side of the right foot which with a double tap turn on. Connect to the shoes then display digitally the battery percentage of the shoes.

Ventilated upper. Keeps the foot cool and allows for breathability.

CMEVA molded sock liner. Adds compression within the ankle to stop the movement. Adds stability and control. (Keller Sport, 2019).

3D printed reinforcement. This enhances traction and durability of the foot.

Firm rubber heel and sole. Minimizes drag during lateral movements and adds support.

High abrasion rubber grips. Offers excellent traction and support.

Thin rubber outsole. Helps abrasion during activities. Lightweight yet covers high impact zones. (Reebok, 2019).

Drop in the midsole. This offers a stable heel with flexibility in the forefoot. (Reebok, 2019).

Company logo. 360 degrees reflectivity for increased visibility on low light nights.

Canvas material. Easy to clean and maintain while also being flexible, cushioning and versatile.

Couple other things Available in wolf grey, black or white. Weigh 290 grams. Women or men. 64 gigabytes

HOW IT WORKS

Firstly download the LIFT app - available for Apple and Android devices.

Bluetooth connects the shoes to the app. This takes a couple moments and all you do is open the app, turn-shoes on, keep them close together and wait for them to sync. Every time you turn the shoes on it will automatically connect with and open the app and start real-time collecting data.

In this, you can name the shoes, personalize your account with features like height, weight, previous results and statistics, add location and connect with friends nearby and see their results.

Next time you use the shoes, skip step two. Just double tap the 15 x 25 mm screen, located on the inner side of the right foot. For the duration of the workout, the screen will remain blue within white the battery percentage.

Put feet in shoes, once the heel hits the sensor they will automatically lace and increase and decrease pressure with movements throughout the workout. While the workout is taking place real-time data will be sent to the app which can be accessed.

Once the workout is complete, take shoes off. Double tap the screen to turn off.

Post workout statistics will be analyzed within a few seconds and will pop up in the app. In the app you can also see the statistics of other users in a 10km radius, using GPS.

The default screen is the dashboard/home screen. This will have general information about gym related news/headlines/workouts for the user.

The profile screen is the personalized screen for the user to add with their details, goals, and achievements.

The statistics screen will display real-life data and post workout statistics from the most recent workout for 24 hours.

The location screen is like a discover screen, it will use GPS mapping to connect and share information with others nearby.

The saved screen will be store all post workout statistics for two months.

The Streets of Gijón: from the Newspaper Archives to the Knowledge Graph

Mis Calles Gijón/Xixón is a Web application started as a personal project, motivated to support my curiosity when walking in the streets of my hometown. I always wonder who was the person, historical fact or place that shaped cities and understand the motivations to name streets after them, as part of a kind of tribute to preserve the history of places.

Technologically, Mis Calles is a Progressive Web Application, suitable for any mobile device, enabling the use of their location capabilities to enrich the user experience. The application was developed through a series of complex Python scripts, which allowed to automate the ingestion and processing of the information, coming from open sources. This automation is interesting since we could deploy a Mis Calles in any city in the world with just minimal adjustments.

The development process had the following steps:

Step 1: The streets and their location

The City of Gijón, through its Transparency and Open Data Portal, publishes two datasets that served to: (1) identify the streets of Gijón —list of streets, type (e.g., avenue, road, park, street, etc.), unique names (no acute accents) and numerical identifiers—, and (2) locate them on a map. The location of the streets is based on the dataset of streets and portal numbers, a table with thousands of coordinates corresponding to each street number (building) and street in the city (not the line or polygon).

Step 2: Generate the polygons on the map

After nesting the tables of streets and numbers, another script built the lines and polygons (in KML and geo-JSON format) shaping the streets, enabling the visualization on a map.

For this, each street is divided into odd and even street numbers. The odd ones are ordered in ascending order and a polygon is generated by joining all the points that form the coordinates. Once the script reached the biggest, it joins all the even points in a descending way until reaching the lowest. Finally, the polygon is closed linking the first point of the list.

This technique is precise in certain ways, but if the street has few registered portals it can give rise to polygons with curious shapes, as can be seen in Calle Mariano Pola, below.

Step 3: Description of streets I: Piñera method

Once the streets were identified univocally, including their approximate location, the streets were described based on the El Comercio's publication: The streets of Gijón, History of their names, a great work by Luis Miguel Piñera.

The portal offers open access to this publication but it does not specify reuse conditions. After several formal use requests to the City Council, and receiving no response (I am still waiting), I asked directly to El Comercio. They quickly agreed and wanted to take part in this project.

In early 2000, you would not expect more than reading that publication as PDF, so no efforts were made beyond the PDF file. With a scraping script, I automated the extraction of the main data of the work: a name of the person or event that named after the street, description, date of registration and previous names. The extraction was chaotic (e.g., changes in the expected structure, page breaks, figures, cites, etc.), and the result had to be double checked almost manually.

Another Python script nested the resulting tables: list of streets, geo-localized and now including a description. In the case of not finding the exact match between the denomination (e.g., comparison of 'LOS CALEROS' and 'CALEROS, LOS'), the script prompted asking for the right choice.

Step 4: Description of streets II: Knowledge Graph

Although the real value of the application comes from Piñera's historical investigation, several streets were not included. In this case, these entities are usually concepts or contemporary people that can be easily recognizable and whose descriptive information can be found on the Web. So, another method of finding information associated with those entities was searching the Knowledge Graph, which Google offers through an API.

The Knowledge Graph is a structure of information linked by semantic concepts —is what Google uses to show proper results. This graph contains information from open sources, such as Wikipedia. It includes metadata associated with the concepts that characterize them in depth.

This data source is really interesting to get information about places, events or people. The script queries the API recognizing the types of results obtained. The results also show the degree of success confidence. So in the case of finding a match of the expected type, the script stores the data in a table with the needed information: description, alternative title, URL of the entity (Wikipedia page), image URL and associated license, standardised entity type using schema.org (eg, CivicStructure or LandmarksOrHistoricalBuildings). For example, the result obtained for the entity'EUROPA' [Square], is:

Unfortunately, Google has removed the dereference and visualization of the Knowledge Graph entities —a few weeks ago, we could visualize an infobox with the information related to the entity. Anyway, this does not affect the application.

Step 5: Types of Entities

The Knowledge Graph, and its queries were the basis of the classification of the entities in an automated way. In the previous example, Europe is of type: Thing (thing, of course); Continent (continent); Place (place); and AdministrativeArea (administrative area).

Approximately, the 40% of the entities represented were classified automatically, always under human supervision, since there are confusing cases in which artificial intelligence can not do anything.

For example, Calle 'Cabrales' refers to the concept of 'Cabranes'. Within the Knowledge Graph, both concepts are identified and described as municipalities in Asturias, but actually, the street is named after a person.

Once all the tables were joined and nested (listing, geo-positioning, descriptions with the Piñera method and the Knowledge Graph, and types) I completed the classification using a subsequent semi-automatic homogenization of the types. For this, I used OpenRefine.

Finally, all the themes were defined in an intuitive taxonomy through a card sorting exercise. As a result, 1035 entities were grouped as:

(53) Concepts (feelings, jobs, physical elements)

(11) Explorers (historic conquerors)

(220) Geography (municipalities of Asturias, geographical features, populated places, etc.)

(113) History (historical events, people, landmarks of historical relevance)

(69) Business (people related to industrial and/or urban development)

(112) Letters (writers, thinkers, philosophers, etc.)

(105) Nature (fauna, flora, and other natural concepts)

(21) Nobility (monarchs and nobility in general)

(27) Organisations (companies and organizational entities)

__(94) Politicians (governors, military and councilors)

(79) Religion (religious people, places and concepts)

(73) Scientists (mathematicians, physicists and science or technology persons)

Also, taking advantage of other concrete types gathered by the scripts, I produced a second level of topic themes. For example, the subject Geography includes the following sub-themes: Country (27 entities), Geography of Asturias (66), Geography of Spain (44), Geography of Gijón (21), International Geography (13), Historical Places (1), Orography (48).
