She couldn’t believe that they had made such a perfect little thing. She couldn’t take her eyes off of him and the perfect moment was made more so when Cason reached out and interacted with their son. She hadn’t ever seen anything that was so heartwarming before. It was a memory that she wanted to keep forever. A picture wasn’t exactly something she could manage in that moment. She turned her attention to the nurse, listening carefully as the explanation was given. She settled the baby against her and after a few tries it finally worked. Her eyes closed, the exhaustion hitting her hard. She couldn’t sleep yet though. They had to stay for at least the next 12 hours to make sure Elijah was okay and remained healthy enough to head home. “Think he has your nose.” She teased Cason softly.

Katherine knew what Cason was trying to do. It happened every time that they had some sort of school function or big event. Katherine wasn’t one to hold a grudge or not be polite and well mannered. Their son was the one that mattered the most, he hadn’t seen them fight and she made an effort to ensure that he didn’t. “He is the good thing to come out of the marriage.” She agreed softly as her eyes followed him across the field. “Doesn’t make a difference in how we ended up Cason.” She reminded him softly. It also didn’t change the fact that she was seeing someone else finally.

Katherine watched the way that Cason stood up and moved with a little shakiness. Warning bells went off in her head but with him gone, she couldn’t bring herself to leave. Someone had to stay and watch over Eli, make sure that everything was still okay. It was how hey had been running things. She gave their boy a smile and continued to brush some hair from his face. “Why don’t I turn on the tv? I’m sure there is some game on that you would want to watch.” She asked before getting a nod. Katherine turned on the television, bypassing any worry about paying for it and flicked through the channels before finding one of the games that she knew he would like to watch. She moved back to the chair and pulled her legs underneath her. Her mind wandered to Cason and she glanced towards the door.

She would just have to wait until he got back, or she could send Lola. She glanced over to the girl before deciding against it. If he wasn’t back in a little bit, she could send out the search party. Something was wrong but she couldn’t put her finger on it and she couldn’t exactly dedicate time to it right now. He may have really hurt her but he was still Elijah’s father and a part of her still cared for him. His well being was important even when she was pissed or thought that maybe he didn’t care enough about her own. She ran a hand over her face and sighed before looking to the tv.
She watched Eli fall asleep, taking comfort in having been able to speak with him, even if it had been a short while. He had woken up and that was more than what the doctors had been giving them as the week went on. Each day that had passed, it had seemed more dire and less likely that he was going to even actually open his eyes. Katherine felt the blanket over her shoulders and vaguely heard Lola speaking but the words didn’t register. She sat down in one of the chairs finally, falling asleep within minutes of sitting down. The adrenaline had run out for both adults and it had left them utterly exhausted.
“Hm?” She asked, sitting straight up. The dreams had been more nightmares and for a second, she thought that Eli hadn’t woken up at all until she heard his voice. She stood and made her way over to the bed, giving him a soft smile. “You’re father is right Eli. All that matters is that you are here with us now. We know that it isn’t something you would do. Don’t worry about it. You need to just focus on getting better okay?” She reached up and gently brushed some hair back from his forehead. “All we are going to do is focus on what the doctors tell us need to be done to get you better from here on out.”

Katherine had been there with Cason the entire time, everything else was so much less important. Nothing mattered as much as their son did. Katherine, for the sake of her own well being, had taken to talking to him, even if he couldn’t hear. She would tell him stories of when he was younger, head resting on the bed beside him. She would talk to him about how his favorite sports teams were doing, hand gripping his free one. She would make promises of what they would do when he finally woke up. Katherine didn’t hold back anything in those moments, wanting anything that could get through to get through. She wanted to give him whatever encouragement that she could to make sure that he kept fighting to come back. Eli was a strong kid, as stubborn as the both of them. She tried to keep holding onto that hope that he would wake up any minute.
It became harder to hold onto as time went on. Each day brought a fresh wave of despair and anguish. The machine was something that she heard whooshing in her ears when she stepped out to use the bathroom or get a coffee. She had stepped outside the room to cry, not wanting Eli to hear any of that when the doctors went rushing in. He was awake and trying to speak. Katherine felt her heart in her throat as she stood at the bedside, leaning down to kiss his forehead when Cason had straightened up enough to leave room. She could have collapsed then and there. “Hey baby boy.” She murmured gently. “Everything’s going to be okay. ” She repeated the reassurance, knowing that they needed it just as much. She reached out with her other hand and found Cason’s, squeezing it softly.
Katherine barely noticed the fact that Liam had left the room, her gaze never leaving Elijah. The sound of the machine was something that would be in her brain forever, haunting her nightmares as much as the sight of her boy laying in the bed all hooked up and supported was. It was a sight that no parent should have to see. She sniffled as she fought to keep too many of the tears from falling. Eli didn’t need to be hearing that if he could hear them at all. He needed to know that they were there for him and ready for him to wake up, to be able to take him home as soon as the doctor had given the okay. Katherine couldn’t even begin to think of any sort of lasting damage something like this could do. There was no telling how he would wake up. Or if he even would according to the doctor. It was a thought she couldn’t entertain right now. She needed time before being able to accept that possibility.
She glanced towards Cason for just a moment, the comment sinking in deep. He had to be okay, even when there was a chance that he wasn’t. Neither was going to take it well if Elijah came out of this not himself, if he came out with the sort of lasting repercussions that would affect the rest of his life. That thought alone had her rubbing her eyes, pushing back the tears the best that she could. She found a chair and sat down, her hand back against Elijah’s arm and her other moving in his hair. He had to wake up.

Katherine nearly collapsed down but managed, somehow beyond her to make it to the edge of the bed. It didn’t seem real, it felt like an absolute nightmare. The sound of the machine associated with the rise and fall of Elijah’s chest. Katherine was taking shaky, shallow breaths as she gripped his arm as Cason held his hand. She was crying but trying to keep a voice steady enough to speak. “We’re here Eli. Mom and Dad are here. Lola and Liam are too. We just...we need you to wake up. We love you. We can figure out everything else later. We just need you to wake up.” Katherine didn’t expect him to wake up in that moment but she needed him to know that they were there. He didn’t look himself, with all the tubes and wires, medications being run into him. It was a sight that would haunt her nightmares for the rest of her life.
She couldn’t even bring herself to ask Cason to stop when he moved over to Paul. It had happened while Elijah was at his house and there wasn’t an ounce in her to care about if Cason beat the man to a pulp because of it. It was probably better Liam was there so Cason didn’t end up thrown out of the hospital, unable to see their son. Katherine brushed some hair from Eli’s forehead, her eyes focused back on him. She couldn’t think about stepping away from the bedside right now.
Kat had gotten the call and felt panic welling up in her chest. She was shaking so bad that she couldn’t drive herself to the hospital, thankful to still have Matt there so she could arrive. She didn’t know what the hell was going on or what happened. He was just supposed to be at a party. Her heart was in her throat and her ears were ringing as she rushed into the hospital, looking around and trying to find out where her son was. She could hear Cason screaming out and her stomach dropped through her feet. She rushed over, ignoring everyone and anyone else.
“Cason!” He was fighting with some security guards and that just made her concern worse. “Where is he? What happened?” Her voice shook as she asked, hating that she didn’t know what was happening or that they apparently couldn’t see their boy. It didn’t mean anything good. She wanted to see Eli, needed to know that he was okay but the overwhelming information said that he wasn’t.

She heard CPR and overdose, the words not making sense at all. She looked into the department through the doors, hoping to see something but she couldn’t see a damn thing. She had no idea where their son was at, if he was okay, if he was even alive and the thought made her stomach roll again, threatening to lose all the contents. It happened a second later, thankfully a trash can close. Elijah was about as well behaved as a teenage boy could possibly get. When they were pulled into a separate space, individually to be asked questions, all Katerine could do was fidget and nervously glance towards the door. She wanted to know something, anything. She reminded the lady of that, that they knew nothing, even if he was alive or not, tears in her eyes. The talk with Cason hadn’t gone as well clearly but she assured the woman that they had never had any sort of issue like this, knowing where he was with and who he was with at all times.
Katerine returned the hug, holding maybe a little tighter than she meant to. Matt had thankfully stayed in the car for now, though he would have to come in soon enough if it was going to be a long wait. “No, they haven’t even let us in to see him yet. The doctor apparently said something about a drug overdose? I don’t know. I got the information from your father.” She rubbed her eyes, trying to keep from losing herself completely again. Someone came out to grab them and Katherine held tightly to Lola’s hand. Thankfully Liam had to wherewithal to grab Cason. A gasp left her as they entered the room to see Elijah intubated, a machine breathing for him. Her hand covered her mouth and she couldn’t stop herself from crying again.

She rolled her eyes with a smile still on her lips as Eli teased her about the relationship. “Oh please. You knew I had a few dates.” She would never keep that from him. “You know it’s important for me that you two have a good relationship for things to ever move forward. You are my first priority Eli.” She reminded him softly, glancing to him and letting him know just how serious she was about that. It was too late for him to keep it from Cason but she appreciated the effort that he was putting forward. “I’m not going to ask you to lie to your father.” She pulled up to the house just after Lola did. Hopefully things would be a bit more cooled down than last night, if she could keep that boyfriend of hers in check. That was a big if judging by last night.
She gave Eli a hug and watched him enter the house. She gave a barely there wave to Cason before getting in her car and heading off. It wasn’t something she was going to forgive easily and she certainly wouldn’t forget. She had Matt to get back to and hopefully she could take it all through with him and try to make sense of what she was going to have to do moving forward. Keeping things cordial was about all she could think of doing, limiting contact as much as possible.

Katherine could hear the kids bantering back and forth and it brought a smile to her face. A genuine one at that. She greeted them each a good morning with they arrived to the table, introducing Matt to them as she got the plates set. She made sure to keep things about as level as they could be, nothing really exchanging between the two adults besides some smiled and Matt pulling out her chair. She didn’t need to make any of them uncomfortable. The breakfast seemed to run by smoothly. “All right. Everyone grab their stuff. We gotta get you all back.” She knew there would be some groans, particular from Lola. Matt volunteered to clean up and wait while she got them back. She thanked him and waited for everyone to get ready. She reminded Liam to watch his mouth and be respectful around Cason.

Katherine helped him get the bed ready before checking in on Lola and Liam, finding them asleep too. She was thankful for that, thinking it was at least one less problem for her to have to worry about tonight. She got the house locked down and moved to her bed. She didn’t sleep well at all, too bothered by nightmares and the constant racing of her mind. She woke up earlier to the sound of knocking on the door, realizing that Matt had shown up before she could get the kids back to Cason. It would just be another thing for the man to be upset about. She answered the door with a smile, taking in the comforting hug that was offered before getting everyone breakfast ready. They could at least eat before heading back. She messaged Cason to let him know that the kids were all going to be back within the next hour.

He was acting more like an adult than his fourteen years really amounted to as he reassured her and tried to settle her. She knew she could never explain what had upset her, why the fight had thrown her more than any other had. Elijah would hold it against his father and she couldn’t do that to either of them. “Just don’t grow up that fast on me.” She responded instead. “Now I know you’re going to end up watching another movie. Since there isn’t any school tomorrow, I won’t give you a hard time. Just don’t stay up too late okay? We have to get you back to your dad’s tomorrow morning. Don’t want you dead on your feet or getting sick.” She had to try to get Matt to hold off until she had the kids back so it wouldn’t cause a bigger issue with Cason.

There was a difference between respect and pushing too hard. Katherine kept her mouth shut though, knowing that Elijah was doing it out of concern. She smiled softly and leaned over, kissing his head. “When did you go and grow up?” She asked softly. She didn’t bad mouth Cason in front of Eli, it wasn’t something she had ever done and she wasn’t going to start that sort of thing now. “Things between your father and I are...a little rough. I’m sorry it shouldn’t have happened at your game. I really am okay though, I promise. You don’t need to be worry about me like that Eli. It isn’t your job.” Despite what his father may have said, Katherine was the adult, the parent and it was her job to look after him, not the other way around.

Katherine shook her head though the smile remained. Elijah knew what bouandries he could push and what he couldn’t, this being one of them. There were certain things that were okay but there was no point in any of those gory, pointless horror movies. Everyone ate their fill and enjoyed the movie before Lola and Liam decided to go to bed. Katherine reminded her softly to be smart and safe, preferring that they avoid any of the more physical aspects of their relationship that night. It left her and Elijah relaxing on the couch. She looked towards him and offered him a soft smile. “Yeah, I am. I promise.” She didn’t need him worrying about her, didn’t need to add anything to his plate. He should be worrying about girls and his sports and school. There wasn’t a reason for her son to have to feel the need to look after her.

She winced when Lola said that Cason did it. The explanation though was understandable. She poured a little more alcohol into the cut than what was necessary. That was not a smart decision at all and admittedly, it wasn’t something that she wanted to think or hear about. Lola had been open with everything to Katherine because she hadn’t pressed or judged. She tried to make sure that Lola just made the right decisions. “Well, that was a ridiculous decision. It wasn’t right but I can’t say that I blame him either. You never talk to a father about his daughters sex life.” She chided, shaking her head and finishing off placing a small bandage over the wound. She glanced back to watch the two interact, a softer smile to her face finally.
It didn’t last long as she heard the knock. That was going to have to be up to Lola if she wanted to see her father. Katherine couldn’t make that decision. Lola answered the door and shut it fairly quickly. “All right, everyone on the couch. Movie night it is. Food will be here soon.” She knew she would have to order some more. Things had changed rapidly for the evening and she was rolling with the punches the best that she could. She went from an empty house to a full one and she didn’t know if it was comforting or not. Things would change again come tomorrow. She could worry about it then. Matt wanted to meet tomorrow morning to try to make up what had happened that evening but she would figure that out in the morning.

“You sure?” She asked as he made the suggestion, not wanting him to feel like he had to make him at choice because it was the normal routine. She was okay ordering whatever he wanted. A more genuine smile came to her lips as she watched him try to straight out his hair. It was a losing battle given how often Cason still ruffled it, sending it into an unruly nightmare all over again. “Junk food and Netflix sounds like the perfect sort of night. I’ll order us some pizza. Why don’t you get things set up and choose what you want to watch.” She left the choice up to him, she always had. There was a limit of course on what she would allow and he knew that. She called up and ordered the pizza and some salads.
The knock and the sound of Lola’s voice reached her from where she was standing, ordering the food. She moved to the door, worried about the fact that the girl could be here. “Lola?” She had the young man, who she assumed was her boyfriend beside her and the young man appeared to be bleeeing. “What the hell happened?” She ushered them both in and got the young man to sit down. She moved to the bathroom for a small medicine kit. She only had basic skills, enough for some field medicine that was needed. She could at least stop bleeding. “Are you okay?” She turned to look at Lola, more worried about her for the moment. She didn’t know the circumstances surrounding the two showing up at her place, worried that someone had hurt them or they had been in an accident or something else of a less than pleasant nature.

Elijah ran inside and got changed after greeting his sister with a big hug. They would have to really catch up later, a quiet promise to explain to her why he was leaving later once he got to the other house. He didn’t want his father hearing right now. He would understand but might not like it. He didn’t feel like having some sort of long talk or even argument with his Dad over it. They reached the house and he smiled. “I know Dad.” He almost rolled his eyes but managed to avoid it. “I love you too. I’ll be fine. You aren’t leaving me at some friends house. I’m with Mom.” He reminded him as he grabbed his bag and moved to the house.
Katherine watched the interaction, unable to hear anything that was being said between them. She smiled at the boy and welcomed him into the house. She had rushed to get herself cleaned up, trying to hide the evidence that she was crying. She already hated the fact that she had allowed Cason to get that far under her skin, she didn’t need her son worrying about it. She rubbed his back as they entered the house. The entire evening had been completely turned on it’s head multiple times and she had nothing ready for dinner. “Why don’t we call and order some food? We can stay in and watch a movie tonight.” She wasn’t going to ask what had chase the issue, knowing Elijah would tell her in time when he wanted to.

“I know that Dad.” He looked towards the man, knowing that what he was about to say was going to end up hurting his Dad and that wasn’t what he wanted to do at all. He wanted to spend time with his sister but his mom was more important right then. She had been more upset than he had seen her in a long time, the only other time was the actual divorce. He looked towards the house before looking back at his dad. “I don’t want to do pizza Thursday.” He spoke softly. “I wanna go see Mom.” The words felt a little heavy and even at his age, he understood that he could be causing some issue between the adults. He knew that things weren’t great between them, that his mom and dad had some sort of argument at the game. He had seen his mom cry a handful of times that he could remember and it was never for no reason. He was worried about her and wanted to make sure that she was okay.
