if you’re vietnamese as well or know a lot about the culture, you’ll notice that minh-quynh phuong is not exactly a traditional/typical name. after a ton of incidents with her adoptive family minh wanted to have her vietnamese side to be more apparent than her family name ward. growing up, she was just minh ward. so as soon as she was able to she changed her last name ( her excuse to her family was that she didn’t want her professional successes attributed only to her parents’ and brother’s status and wealth ). even though she did extensive research on choosing additional names and a last name, she didn’t feel any of them. due to growing up away from any vietnamese culture in an english speaking country she didn’t think it was fair of her to choose a traditional vietnamese name.

so she chose names she simply felt fitting and put them as her secondary name ( like mary-ann, but minh-quynh ). that’s how she got minh-quynh phuong. traditionally minh, quynh, and phuong are vietnamese first names.
