Because my friend suggested me to check that out if I wanted to post my original stories there... and it's also a good excuse to ask about these things since you're like my go-to person for finding good fanfic websites and all of the sorts 😂 and as usual, have a nice day!

Hope you and yours are hanging in there too! It may be tough right now, but we can all get through this together.

Anyway, to answer your question...

Fictionpress.com is a “fork” site run by the same people who run Fanfiction.net. It was created as a result of people having posted original works (such as short stories and poetry) on Fanfiction.net, and those works having been summarily banned from FF.net when they first started changing the rules for Fanfiction.net back in February 2003. I wouldn’t truly recommend it, unless you’re already familiar with Fanfiction.net’s system and are comfortable with the idea of stricter posting guidelines.

I’ve also had bad experiences from back in the day using FF.net, before they paired off the original works to Fictionpress. Several of my works from back in the day were deleted back then. (Good thing I had backed up my work!)

The FF/FP moderators also tend to be aggressive in regards to adult material, so I would only really recommend writing on Fictionpress if your material is “kid-friendly.” Also, it’s not a terribly popular site to use, so I don’t know how you’re gonna get people to read your work.

Ultimately, though, from what I can see of the various tags, the site is definitely past its prime now, with a much less active user base in the past month. And I honestly can’t remember the last time I was recommended a story posted on Fictionpress.

But! I have a few suggestions in its place.

Believe it or not, AO3 also provides an option to post original work. Not a lot of people realise that or avail themselves of the “Original Work” tag, but it is there! So, if you already have an AO3 account, you can easily post your original stuff there too. Despite that, at my current glance at the tag, there’s more than 85k pieces of work under the tag! It’s also a highly active tag, as the first 5 pages of results offer pieces that have just been updated today!

And, with AO3′s history of protecting transformative works and their extensive tagging system, I’m completely confident that your work will be seen by the people who are looking for the particular tropes or style of work your piece will fall into. You have a better chance, oddly enough, of having your work discovered and enjoyed there.

Alternatively, if you want to (possibly) monetise your original works or are considering eventually becoming an independent author, I recommend using either Smashwords or Kindle Direct Publishing. I’ve had very good experiences with both of them.

Smashwords is an independent ebook distributor that will make your work available to places like Barnes & Noble’s online store and Google Play. I first used them to release my poetry collection back in 2015, and I honestly can’t recommend them highly enough if you want to consider getting started as an indie author. They make tracking downloads and getting your royalties a snap. They also run regular site-wide promotions that you can enter your books in to give them a boost in promo.

Kindle Direct Publishing primarily works with Amazon, but gives you the option to also publish in paperback form as well. You can also use KDP to make the book available to Kindle Unlimited subscribers on Amazon. I’ve been using them since 2018, and I’m very happy with the quality of their paperback production, though their system takes a little bit of practice to get used to.

(You can also make the ebook free on both sites, and KDP has a cover creator option if you’re not a digital artist... but I also have recommendations for that, if you’re interested.)

Basically, you have to ask yourself what you intend to do regarding your original work before tossing it up online. If it’s just something you want to throw out there and let people enjoy without thinking about how to promote it and without earning anything from it (beyond kudos and comments), then posting under AO3′s Original Works tag is your best bet. If you want wider distribution to online booksellers (and therefore people who might not be reading a primarily fanfiction-based website), Smashwords is a good idea to get you started. If you want to be published not just digitally but in physical form, go for Kindle Direct.

I know that was probably a much longer answer than you might’ve expected, but it’s all based on my longtime experiences both putting my work online (since circa 2000) and as an indie author (since 2015). I hope I’ve answered your question satisfactorily and given you some food for thought.

The character you own will always shoot automatically whenever an enemy passes by into your line of fire. Further, in the game, you’ll find more than a hundred different missions, nearly of the length of two or three minutes, during which you’ll face many hordes of alien enemies, also including a boss or two. That said, the most entertaining part of the game is without any doubt its multi-player mode where you can choose to go head-to-head against other real players.

6. Guns of Boom

This is a multiplayer FPS where two teams have a face-off over a wide range of settings. Both the relaxed action style and the graphics put in are unavoidably reminiscent and get you back to great PC classics such as the Team Fortress 2 or the more recent Overwatch. One of the main things this game has done well is the control system. The player can move your characters freely around the setting by using the left virtual stick while he aims with the right one. One doesn’t have to press anything at all to shoot: as long as the enemy stays in view and is within your weapon’s range because then you can automatically shoot at them.

7. Chain Reaction (Best Offline Multiplayer Game)

This is a strategy game for a range of 2 to 8 players. The objective of Chain Reaction is simply to take control of the board by demolishing and finishing off your opponents’ orbs. Players have to take it in turns so as to place their orbs perfectly in a cell. Once a particular cell has reached critical mass, the orbs further explode into the surrounding cells thereby adding an extra orb and claiming the cell for the player from the other one. A player may choose to only place their orbs in a blank cell or a cell that contains orbs of their own color, as and how they like it. When a player ends up losing all their orbs, they are out of the game.

8. Bullet Force

Bullet Force is a first-person multiplayer shooter game which involves players to fight battles in the form of teams namely: terrorists vs counter-terrorists. There is an offline practice mode available which can be used to fight strongly against the many waves of AI opponents. The controls in the game are aptly adapted to touchscreen devices. There’s also a virtual joystick on the bottom left part of the screen that helps control movement along with a button to crouch down. The game puts more than twenty weapons in totality your arsenal, including machine guns, rifles, pistols, shotguns, and many more exciting ones.

9. Counter Attack Multiplayer Game

This is a first-person shooter game. Here, there are two teams of up to five players each that battle it out. One of the amazing things about this game is that you can choose to completely customize all the controls. Also by default, you have a virtual d-pad on the left side along with the shooting and aiming buttons on the right side of the screen. In Counter Attack, you’ll find a few different game modes which will be exciting to discover as you play the game.

One of the benefits of being a hardcore fan of indie games is I’m more tapped into projects that might not be on everybody else’s radar. Case in point, the latest title from 13AM Games, Double Cross. I’d been following it for a little more than a year after discovering it thanks to the magic of the internet. At first glance I could immediately tell this project was a big step up from the relatively young company. While they had great success with iterations of Runbow and charmed many when they published the delightfully retro Pirate Pop Plus, Double Cross promised to be something on an even larger scale. This action platformer has interdimensional travel, tight platforming and a colorful cast of characters. Keep reading to see if it was able to cinch the place as my favorite experience yet from 13AM Games and Graffiti Games.

The story revolves around an interdimensional police agency known as RIFT. They’re charged with keeping exotic technology out of the hands of dangerous or primitive forces. Like their name suggests, they do so via portal technology that lets them travel to and police different worlds. On occasion, RIFT finds new recruits on these worlds, as is the case with our hero, Zahra Sinclair. She’s a spunky upstart with a lot of heart, and her usual approach is to tackle things head on. She’s supported by an eclectic team, including a hulking plant man that could put the Jolly Green Giant to shame, a sweet master of disguise and many more. While the diversity of the team is an asset, it also quickly becomes a problem. After the game starts, RIFT is suddenly under attack from a mysterious masked individual who seems to have insider knowledge about the security of RIFT headquarters. In other words, one of your comrades is a traitor. Thus, Zahra’s job is to look for clues as to the identity of Suspect X, and find evidence of their dangerous activities.

You do this by traveling to three vastly different worlds with three levels a piece. Upon beating each stage, you’ll be rewarded with a clue. Once you get one, you’re required to talk with your RIFT crew to find someone to shine a light on them. Once you’ve retrieved and deciphered all the clues from any of the worlds, you’re able to put together and submit a case to your boss, Valery Wiseheart. She’s a no-nonsense merwoman with a chip on her shoulder. Once you submit a case, you’re given a warrant for arrest, which opens up the boss fight in that world. Eventually you’ll piece together a picture of who Suspect X is, and once you do, you’re able to tackle the final mission. I will say, though I figured out their identity relatively early, I’d be lying if I said I knew what the final boss fight was going to be.

It’s a lot of fun to interact with all the characters in Double Cross. They all have a distinct personality and quirky traits. Good examples are your right-hand guy Skip, who loves collectables and helps monitor problems from the base. Or take the cat girl Ada Lovepaws, a premier tech girl with some mild maniacal tendencies. Then there’s one of my favorites, Sam Squatch, a sasquatch scientist with a goofy sense of humor. Put together, they all do a good job of coloring the flavor of the game universe. This is a lighthearted place where darkness hides beneath a veneer of normalcy. Whether you’re fighting through a goo-filled swamp, playing games in a robotic arcade or fighting dinosaurs in a barren wasteland, you’re sure to have a smile on your face. And that’s not just because of the plot, it’s also because of the gameplay found in the game.

All the platforming in the game revolves around a nifty device called the Proton Slinger. It’s a bit like an electrical grappling hook, and it serves a variety of functions. First and foremost, you can use it to zip from grappling points. Your positioning determines the angle you’ll go flying, and you can use it midair. The only catch is you only can bring up the targeting reticle for a few seconds, so you’ll want to get the timing down quickly. The other use for the Slinger is to grab projectiles and toss them at things. This is very handy. Sometimes you can use the technique to defeat foes, other times you can open up new paths with it. It’s pretty diverse, and I appreciated the novelty of it. Though it did remind me a bit of the egg toss in Yoshi’s Island, it was different enough to stand out.

Besides using the Slinger, Zahra can also defend herself with punches and kicks. When you start, you’re only able to do a combo of light punches or a spectacular heavy punch, but as you progress you’ll unlock new moves via the Upgradium system. Essentially these are purple colored crystals that are well hidden in every level. By collecting enough of them, you’ll level up and be rewarded with new skills. Some are permanent and always active, such as an aerial kick, while others can be equipped at your discretion from save points. There’s a wide variety of them, giving effects such as increasing the time you can have the Slinger active to improving your starting energy. There’s a ton of them, but you’ll only get them all by collecting every scrap of Upgradium. I got close to 80 percent in my playthrough, but I missed out on a couple really useful optional skills like a double jump.

Double jump would have been handy here.

If that wasn’t enough, whenever you defeat an enemy you’ll get rewarded with energy that fills up your meter. You can use different increments of meter for a few extra moves to help you out. For example, by holding A you’ll heal Zahra, or by pressing L you can emit a shockwave, pushing foes back for some breathing room. The coolest is using R to shoot a devastating fireball at foes, though I generally reserved that one for larger, more intimidating threats. Tying all the combat together is a handy dodge move that not only avoids damage but also fills up your energy meter a bit. While it may seem tricky that most every button on the Switch is used, in execution it all felt pretty natural.

What really drew me to Double Cross, as much as the platforming hook, was the presentation. Visually this is a lovely game, with bright, anime-styled art that wouldn’t look out of place in a WayForward title. Everything is bubbling with personality and style, most especially the character art and tremendous boss fights. I won’t spoil them, but every boss encounter is a treat and makes good use of the mechanics. There were only a couple of areas the art faltered. First and most importantly, I’m pretty certain Double Cross doesn’t run at 60 FPS, or if it does, it isn’t all the time. While this rarely caused performance issues, it was a bit jarring to the eye, giving things a blurry sensation. Another area was the background art. For a game this colorful and well designed, the backgrounds often felt flat and lifeless. And while that didn’t ruin the game by any stretch, it was one factor which prevented it from getting a perfect score. On the musical side of things, the game has a lot of high-energy tracks which do a good job of keeping you invested. Though I can’t think of any standout tracks, some of my favorite tunes came from the prehistoric Reptarria stages.

Pillar Panic almost made me lose my mind.

Though I enjoyed the game, there were a couple areas where it missed the mark. Firstly, though I loved the constant banter and humor that happens as you play each stage, it’s irritating that it pops up every time you replay a stage. This made Upgradium hunting a chore. All that I really wanted was a button to skip dialogue after playing a stage the first time. A much worse example is in the second stage in the Funderdome. It requires you to go through an arcade and get scores high enough to get onto the in-game leaderboards. The problem is, one of the mini games you need to excel at is called Pillar Panic. It forces you to swing in midair, avoiding the walls and floor spikes which instantly kill you, and swing through several checkpoints. You need to do this at least six times in a row. Exacerbating it is that once you start the mini game, the wall behind you starts chasing you, and it will crush you if you’re too slow. Worse, if you die, you have to start over from the very beginning. Suffice to say, this forced mini game almost made me give up in despair, but thankfully the other five you need to play were much easier, and I eventually got past it. Also, while I do thoroughly enjoy the platforming in the game, the combat is less satisfactory. Not because it’s poorly done, but more that it feels kind of tacked on. I would have been fine with Zahra only using the Proton Slinger to fight, not punching or kicking at all. I’ve seen some games have great success formulating all the combat around a simple mechanic, and I guess I just hoped for something similar here. That said, the combat does the job, it just doesn’t hold up when compared side by side with the platforming.

Overall, I was really impressed by Double Cross. It was an ambitious project from 13AM Games that succeeded in raising expectations for what you can expect from the team. While I’ve enjoyed the other titles from them, this one stood out, thanks to the clever plot, the characters and the platforming. Yes, it has some minor issues, but those can mostly be overlooked. For $9.99 you get at least 5-7 hours of game, and that’s if you just rush through. If you’re a completionist, there’s even more fun to be had, collecting all the Upgradium and achieving the various Commendations (basically in-game achievements). If you enjoy platformers and a quirky cast, you’ll enjoy this one. I’m impressed by 13AM’s latest outing, and hope this isn’t the last we’ve seen of Zahra Sinclair and the RIFT!

With about two-dozen politicians from nine different countries clustered around a committee table in London, NDP MP Charlie Angus somehow managed to get the last word.

“Perhaps the simplest form of regulation would be to break Facebook up or treat it as a utility,” said Angus, who was part of an “international grand committee” convened on Tuesday to investigate the scandal surrounding Cambridge Analytica Ltd.’s use of personal data from millions of people’s Facebook profiles without their consent for political purposes.

“It depends on the problem we’re trying to solve,” said Richard Allan, vice-president of policy solutions at Facebook, who had spent the preceding three hours parrying similarly pointed questions.

“The problem is Facebook,” Angus snapped back. “That’s the problem.”

Canada risks losing its artificial intelligence edge as adoption lags and the tech goes mainstream

The ones that got away: Why making it big in tech might mean leaving Canada

Like most committees, the talk was tough, and the three Canadian MPs present were among the toughest talkers. But their steely approach belied an uncomfortable reality back home: As the European Union pushes ahead with sweeping new privacy rules specifically designed for the era of big data, Canada lags behind, relying on an outdated regime enacted before data-hungry companies such as Facebook Inc. even existed.

“We have a national private-sector data protection law that was designed for the early days of electronic commerce when people were just trying to figure out how to buy shoes online,” said Teresa Scassa, Canada Research Chair in Information Law and Policy at the University of Ottawa. “We are in a completely different data environment now and what we have is legislation that is just not up to the task.”

Federal privacy commissioner Daniel Therrien, experts such as Scassa and a house committee on which Angus serves have all called for a rewrite of Canada’s data privacy law. Recent polls show Canadians are also clamouring for beefed-up legislation, but the early lessons from Europe’s stringent new rules show that the trade-off for keeping our browser history to ourselves is dampened investment and possible job losses.

Facebook and Google LLC may dominate the conversation when it comes to privacy legislation in Europe, but the laws are “targeted at every single business that uses data,” said Daniel Castro, director of the Information Technology and Innovation Foundation’s Center for Data Innovation in Washington, D.C.

The laws mean small businesses are dealing with high compliance costs and confusion about what their responsibilities are. In some cases, they are deciding to simply shut up shop.

“We’ve seen businesses shut down in certain areas, because it’s just not worth it anymore,” said Castro, referencing video game makers and U.S. news organizations that chose to simply block Europeans from seeing their websites, rather than comply with the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) that came into force in May.

In Canada, the rules for the private sector’s collection and use of personal information are set out in the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA) — legislation crafted in the late 1990s with an eye to both promoting trust in e-commerce and ensuring alignment with Europe.

Then, as now, reassuring the EU that its citizens’ information would be adequately protected in Canada was essential to safeguarding the flow of data between the two jurisdictions, said Michael Power, a professor of privacy law at the University of Toronto who helped design the original law.

“That was the whole impetus of PIPEDA,” he said. “But you know, we wrote that stuff in ’96, ’98, before internet web browsing, the dot-com boom, certainly before the rise of search engines and well before social media.”

By contrast, GDPR is a “third-generation statute meant to respond to the internet as it is now,” Power said.

Central to GDPR is “privacy by design,” a concept developed by former Ontario privacy commissioner Ann Cavoukian that calls for those rights to be considered at every stage of product development.

GDPR puts new restrictions on how much data companies can collect and for how long the information can be stored. It also significantly expands individual rights over that data, enabling Europeans to move personal information collected by one company to another company, and granting them “the right to be forgotten” or require search engines such as Google to remove certain personal content from its platform.

Also central to GDPR is “privacy by design,” a concept developed by former Ontario privacy commissioner Ann Cavoukian that calls for privacy rights to be considered at every stage of product development.

Those measures were among a range of recommended updates to PIPEDA made in February following a review by the House of Commons’ standing committee on access to information, privacy and ethics — on which Angus serves as vice-chair.

The committee also called on Ottawa to bolster the enforcement powers of the federal privacy commissioner, who, unlike counterparts in other countries, cannot make binding orders on companies or issue fines.

Yet no major changes to PIPEDA — beyond new provisions requiring companies to disclose data security breaches — have been put forward, even as other countries race to upgrade their privacy laws to GDPR levels.

Meantime, privacy concerns are reaching “crisis levels,” privacy commissioner Daniel Therrien warned. “Unfortunately, progress from government has been slow to non-existent.”

The lack of action is likely rooted in concerns that date back to when the law was first drafted, said the University of Ottawa’s Scassa.

“In Canada, there’s a real fear, as there was back in 2001, that small and medium-sized businesses will be completely overwhelmed by having to comply with stricter privacy regulations and that they simply don’t have the resources and money to spend on privacy compliance,” she said. “There’s a concern, too, that it will make Canadian businesses uncompetitive in North America, because they’re going to have a heavier burden of regulatory compliance than their counterparts in the U.S.”

According to Castro, complying with GDPR could cost a company millions of dollars, and the Financial Times has reported that Fortune 500 companies have earmarked US$7.8 billion in total to comply with the EU’s new rules.

Early research shows GDPR is having a tangible effect on reducing the amount of tracking software on the web, but the same data show small businesses are struggling under the new regime while Google eats up even more market share.

In Europe, small advertising firms have lost somewhere between 18 and 31 per cent in market share, while Facebook declined seven per cent. Google was able to increase its market share by one per cent, and at least part of the increase was due to the significant resources that it can throw at compliance, according to a study by Cliqz International GmbH and Ghostery, two European privacy companies.

Overall investment may be suffering in the wake of GDPR, too. A recent research paper by three U.S. economists found that new and emerging tech firms are struggling to raise money since Europe’s privacy rules came into effect.

The average amount raised by startups declined by US$3.4 million, a 40 per cent drop from before GDPR was put in place, according to the paper co-authored by Liad Wagman, an economist at the Illinois Institute of Technology. With some “back of the envelope” calculations, the paper estimates that the rules could cost anywhere between 3,600 to 30,000 jobs.

Though it may be too early to draw any firm conclusions, Wagman said “the results are supported by existing economic theories which show that compliance costs tend to reduce new venture formation and disproportionately impact nascent firms.”

Nevertheless, global compliance with GDPR — considered the gold standard of privacy protection — may be inevitable, said Anu Bradford, a law professor at Columbia University and director of the Center for European Legal Studies.

Deep-pocketed global firms such as AirBnB Inc., Microsoft Corp. and Google have already made changes to conform to the law, and have extended those changes into global policies rather than absorb the costs of maintaining multiple frameworks.

In addition, more than 120 countries, including India, Brazil and China, have aligned their privacy regimes to the EU’s in an effort to secure the flow of data with the EU. And powerful industry leaders such as Apple Inc. chief executive Tim Cook have thrown their support behind GDPR, urging the U.S. to adopt a similar policy.

“It’s the market incentives that are globalizing the GDPR rules,” said Bradford, who calls the phenomenon “the Brussels Effect. It is everywhere. So the ability to take advantage of lower standards when dealing with the rest of the world is really diminishing, because the rest of the world is following the EU.”

That leaves the U.S. as the “outlier,” Bradford said.

The U.S. has long been reluctant to conform to EU regulatory standards and tends to view privacy as a matter contracted between companies and individuals. In May, U.S. Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross wrote an op-ed for the Financial Times complaining that GDPR “creates serious, unclear obligations” for companies that could disrupt trade and impose unnecessary costs on businesses.

But scandals such as the one involving Cambridge Analytica, together with a restrictive new data protection law imposed in California, may soon push Washington’s hand, Bradford suggested.

“There is only so much space for the U.S. to say, ‘We’re going to do it our way,’” she said. “It’s hard to make a full-throated, free-market, no-regulation argument about data privacy in today’s political climate.”

The pressure for change is mounting in Ottawa too, though Scassa is skeptical that any new legislation will be enacted before the next federal election. Still, data privacy is increasingly a “hot button issue,” suggesting the government will have to do something.

“Canada doesn’t have to go full-on GDPR,” she said. “We just need to do something.”

Therrien, who has long pushed for changes to PIPEDA as well as new powers for his office to enforce it, believes a made-in-Canada approach that is scaleable to small businesses is entirely possible.

“I don’t think privacy and innovation and economic growth are in opposition,” he said. “The best strategy would be for Canada to seek to achieve both privacy and innovation at the same time and I think that’s entirely possible.”
