i just think it's so cool that out of nowhere such a beautiful community that centers around something like dracula. i mean that's what fandom is at its core but with dracula daily the concept and idea of it is so silly that makes that realization about fandom and fan communities on the internet as a whole so blatant that for a moment you forget the bad rep, the controversies and all the negative things associated with fandom (not neccesarily because dracula daily doesn't have that, but because of the sillyness of it all, as i said) and you realise how special and incredible and just beautiful is the fact that we can connect in this way and have fun and be silly and make jokes and be a community. like damn. fandom is the best thing that the internet has to offer, and for me dracula daily exemplifies that so well.

now, more than ever, with the way that corporations and greedy billionaires are making the internet worse, and hate becoming in many corners the main currency, and ai slop overtaking, we should celebrate and cheerish genuine things like these that are spontaneously born out of love and passion because they remind us that the internet is not dead because we are still alive.

I actually think people who respond to institutional ableism by calling the person committing those acts "schizophrenic" or "retarded" are doing far, far more harm than good. Not just because the words hurt my fee fees. Consider:

Elon Musk does a Nazi salute, his fanboys claim it's because he's autistic, and the internet lurches toward pointing out, no, his behaviour cannot be explained by autism. The internet even spotlights some soc. med. accounts claiming to be autistic explaining how autism does not determine beliefs or explain his consistent pattern of behaviour before this event. The conversation ends. Excellent, no notes, exactly how this kind of thing needs to work out. There is no better conversation that can come from this situation on social media.

RFK Jr., current Secretary of Health and Human Services, has incredible institutional power. He can, will, and is affecting disability outcomes in real time. He says he believes autism is caused by vaccines and wastes an insane amount of money funding probably useless research identifying the "environmental causes," instead of building support services. He says that psychiatric medication, the kind that many schizophrenics essentially need to live, is addictive and harmful. He says he wants to round up all of the severely cognitively disabled people and put us in open-air prison "wellness farms" in a direct call to a bright, shiny, rainbow capitalist solarpunk chic return to institutionalization - he is thus threatening the direct abuse of compelled treatment laws.

This is, to be clear, one of the most serious threats to disabled people in recent American history. Someone who directly wants to harm us, and believes this will help us, has the wheel. This is how all of those scary Arkham Asylum health prisons you've seen in movies like Shutter Island and, uh, what's a movie tumblr's seen... probably Sucker Punch? Francis Ford Coppola's Dracula? anyway, this is how those "sanitariums" happened. The only distinction between this and Eugen Bleuler is that where Bleuler spoke like a fatalist, RFK Jr. and his supporters paint the exact same systems and fears with an optimistic brush by not precluding the concept that this might cure us, when we know it won't.

So how do people respond this time?

Well they see that RFK Jr. has a lot of radicalized, cult-like, conspiracy theorist beliefs, and because he believes things that are not true, they --

accuse him of being schizophrenic.

they say he's sick and needs help. he needs to be given the right meds. he needs to be in a padded cell.

this reinforces the idea that schizophrenics are nutso dangerous people who fundamentally lack the ability to have a say in our own treatment.

which is also, again, contrary to deinstitutionalization.

the very position one wants to have when opposing RFK Jr.'s institutionalist proposals.

This should be obvious because using the very diagnosis of people you allegedly want to defend (come on, no you don't, you think if it was just us specifically sent to those prisons that "at least normal people would be safer." i can see you, margaret - you care about cute level one autistic people only) as a slur is like... dude. Come on.

This is entry level basic "why can't I say the N word?" stuff. This is literally the most basic overt concept possible in any kind of understanding of human rights. You can't say the N word, or say that Jewish people will do anything for a dollar, or that womens' brains are smooth and fit only for the kitchen, for the same reason you shouldn't accuse RFK Jr. of being schizophrenic while defending the rights of schizophrenics:

Part of the reason I made this change was because I've heard a few warning bells going off regarding Substack getting cozy with Elon Musk and his version of 'free speech.' It's why I was looking for alternatives in the first place. I know a lot of great writers are on there because of the ease of the platform. Dracula Daily is on there! Even Robert Reich! But I worry about where the platform might slip as the next four years of the Fuckening wears on. And being a Patreon member is still very much free (likewise most of my material). It'll just be easier on my end to make a little money in the tip jar that way.

The Quatermass Xperiment

Writer Nigel Kneale may not have been happy with what Hammer Films did with his classic TV serial, but audiences loved Val Guest’s THE QUATERMASS XPERIMENT (1955, Prime, YouTube). It not only inspired a run of British science-fiction films but also led its production company, Hammer, to go further into horror with their revised versions of classic monsters like Dracula and Dr. Frankenstein.

When Prof. Bernard Quatermass’ (Brian Donlevy) British-American space rocket crashes in a British field, only one member of the three-man crew is discovered on board. He’s kept in hospital, but escapes (thanks to an idiotic wife) as he’s slowly transformed into an odd blob that threatens to shoot spores around the planet and absorb all life on Earth (which may explain the origins of Elon Musk).

One of Kneale’s chief objections was the casting of Brian Donlevy to make the film more marketable in the U.S. His Americanized Quatermass is far less thoughtful than the role Kneale had written for TV, but it works in Guest’s reimagining of the material. He’s brash and often ruthless, which Donlevy plays with authority. He’s certainly better than the other American import. Margia Dean was cast as the astronaut’s wife either because she had a long-term relationship with the film’s American co-producer’s, Lippert Films, or was having an affair with 20th Century-Fox chair Spyros Skouras, who wanted her to do most of her acting outside the U.S. Sadly, she doesn’t really do any acting. I mean, she moves across the frame and says words, but there’s no conviction behind any of it. Nor is there any attempt to explain her American accent. It’s a mercy that she disappears halfway through the film. She doesn’t even get a death scene, since there’s no life in her for her alienated husband to suck out. We’re just told she’s in shock (how could they tell?) and is left in hospital until she can find a more suitable career.

Fortunately, Richard Wordsworth is much better as the astronaut. Guest keeps his dialog to the minimum, but his gaunt face and physical commitment make him both frightening and sympathetic. He captures the essence of a man fighting against whatever is taking over his body. Jack Warner is also good as the police inspector who insinuates himself into Quartermass’ investigation, and there’s welcome comic relief from Harold Lang as the man Dean hires to get her husband out of the hospital and Thora Hird as an old drunk who spotted the transformed astronaut scaling a wall. You may also notice UPSTAIRS DOWNSTAIRS’ Gordon Jackson as a TV producer and a very young Jane Asher as a girl who finds Wordsworth sleeping by a canal.

Guest’s direction is intelligent and well-paced. The early scenes of police and military dealing with the crashed spaceship have a documentary feel, which helps ground the story, and he wisely substitutes suspense for gore. It’s also not too out there to suggest the film has s sexual subtext. The rocket ship sticking out of the ground has a distinctly phallic look. Lang gets Wordsworth out of the hospital easily because the male nurse on duty is busy trying to pick up two female nurses, And Donlevy’s bull-in-a-china-shop approach to his character points to a critique of toxic masculinity before the term was coined. At the film’s end, despite the destruction wrought by his earlier experiment, he’s planning to resume his space program. The last shot is of another phallic-shaped rocket about to take off and violate the natural order.

The Babygirlification of the Modern Vampire - marinashutup

The first half is mostly just her love of Baldur’s Gate 3′s Astarion, and Twilight’s Edward Cullen; but she actually starts cooking in the last ~15 minutes, about major themes about vampires & vampirism in general; and why audiences relate to monsters so much:

Toxic cycles of abuse & vampire guilt (30:58 - 32:56)

Considering the vampire cycle of abuse, is it really any wonder that so many vampires are angsty brooding and hate themselves? 

“This is the skin of a killer, Bella!” (Edward Cullen)

The overwhelming desire to drain innocent victims -like Elon Musk drains Diet Coke cans and Twitter's net worth aside--vampires are basically groomed into believing they need to be sadistic, unempathetic, tyrannical monsters. Sure, monsters don't have a lot of say in their nature, but the culture of  enslaving, torturing, and brainwashing certainly doesn't help.

This is also making me think a lot about the way that artificial family dynamics are replicated within vampire lore.

Cazador is described as the patriarch of his coven, and he repeatedly calls his Spawn his children. He uses infantilizing language, referring to Astarion--a 239 year-old man--as “boy” and “child.” The Zar family is also a literal family lineage of vampires, and there's a whole side story where you learn that Cazador turned his own niece at the age of 13 without her consent. Incidentally, she was kind of a bada** because she rejected the whole creepy family cult thing, changed her name, and refused to ever leave her room. Honestly, Queen Sh*t. 

In real life toxic family dynamics, abusive parental figures often think of their abuse as serving a greater good. In the minds of many abusers, corporal punishment functions as a way to correct perceived mistakes and reinforce desired behavior in victims. The schemas passed down from vampire Masters to their spawn are inherently rooted in a cycle of abuse. 

In vampire mythology, including Dracula, Interview with the Vampire, and Buffy, vampire lineage often requires that all vampires are both victim and predator. The original trauma of being preyed upon by a monster who has power over them, viciously attacked and turned against their will, is part of a cycle of violence that gets repeated every time a vampire feeds or creates another vampire. In many of these narratives, the dichotomy of vampire-versus-prey / Master-versus-Spawn mirrors the abuser-victim dynamic.

The Role of Choice (35:43 - 38:17)

The role of choice is the primary theme running throughout Baldurs Gate 3, but it's also a major recurring concept within vampire narratives. 

In Twilight, Bella spends three and a half long-winded books begging Edward to turn her, to allow her to exercise her choice, and become a vampire--and he just keeps edging her. There's a lot to be said about Bella's motivations for this, and whether or not her desire is valid or rooted in a teen girl's struggle with identity. The books don't really grapple with the weight of that choice in a satisfying or intellectually curious way, but it's undeniably a substantial part of the text. 

In Interview with the Vampire [the 1994 movie], after mortally wounding Louis, Lestat presents him with the choice he never had--

“I'm going to give you the choice...I never had.” (Lestat, IWTV 1994)

But the so-called “choice” that Lestat offers his targets isn't really a choice at all. Mortally wounding someone, and then offering them the option to become a vampire or die is a false dichotomy of choice, that Lestat manufactured to suit his own needs: 

"If I leave you here...you die.” (Lestat, IWTV 1994)

Like, sir!? Have you ever considered the third option of NOT bringing your targets right up to the point of death, and instead simply letting them go?! 

He targets Louis because he knows he's emotionally vulnerable. Louis’ grieving the loss of his wife and daughter, behaves recklessly because he actively wants to unalive himself. He begs for death, but when the moment comes, he hesitates.

"Have you tasted it enough?” (Lestat, IWTV 1994)

Lestat promises that the gift of Darkness will rid him of pain and grief, and Louis agrees, but only reluctantly.

When Astarion first meets Cazador, his experience mirrors Louis. He's similarly bleeding to death when he's given the option to die or become a vampire; a choice he references with a degree of sarcasm:

"Eternal life, or bleed to death on the street!” (Astarion, BG3)

Cazador also leaves out some pretty major details about the consequences of being a vampire spawn, and it's doubtful Astarion would have actually consented to being turned had he been informed of them. I think it's also pretty clear in the way that Astarion talks about his experience that the process of being turned was a major source of trauma for him, and not something that he would choose a second time.

"I don't want to turn into anything else.” (Astarion, BG3)

I think it's also clear in the language he uses to describe his experience that he does not enjoy being a vampire. He pathologizes vampirism with medical euphemisms, describing it as a “condition,” “complication,” and “affliction.” 

Even Cazador himself seems to struggle with the monster he eventually became. If you use Detect Thoughts while Cazador is asleep in his coffin, his thoughts betray an eerie internal monologue.

Abuse Survivors vs Abuse Perpetuators (42:19 - end)

Some survivors of parental abuse unconsciously replicate the same behaviors and ideals from their own abusers. That's why you sometimes see generational trauma pass down within families, from abusive parents to their children, to their children's children.

Astarion's romantic relationship with the player also morphs into this weird power dynamic thing--and, like, I get it, I get it! You can actually have him turn Tav into a vampire spawn. But it's pretty clear that he will then start thinking of you [Tav] as a subordinate.... 

But mirroring his transformation from human to spawn, Astarion's Ascension fundamentally changes who he is as a person--

"Something tells me he's not the same person we knew.” (Karlach, BG3) 

And what I think is so interesting about Baldur’s Gate 3 is that it presents players with the complicated choice between persuading Astarion from making a decision that would clearly damage his progress healing from abuse, and letting him make his own quote unquote choice to Ascend. 

To me, persuading Astarion NOT to go through with the ritual and save the imprisoned Spawn is an essential step in the character's healing journey. Instead of rooting his aspirations in the twisted ideals that Cazador and the vampires before him glorified, this decision shifts how Astarion views himself, and who he identifies with. Truly seeing and valuing the Spawn’s humanity is Astarion choosing to identify with Cazador's other victims and honor the humanity within himself by aligning himself with the Spawn. It means he too is a survivor worth saving. It means choosing to be better than Cazador-- choosing to form his own identity, and choosing to break the centuries-long vampire cycle of abuse. And that's really powerful. 

But of course, you can also choose to let your pansexual elf boyfriend double down on becoming a toxic Alpha Vampire Who Wants to Rule the World. Some players actually prefer letting Astarion Ascend, and live out his fantasy as a kinky vampire Top, creating a polycule of Spawn Submissives.

In Baldur’s Gate 3, you can make whatever choice you want. That's kind of the whole point.

Some crooks kidnap Dracula's daughter, although it seems like it was all an elaborate ruse to get some people for Abigail to munch who wouldn't be reported missing? Personally I think that a Blood Red Sky approach, where the vampire is present in an otherwise mundane crime thriller, would have been more effective personally, but we shall see when the movie comes out in April or so. :)
