In the shadow of a ruined building, she found herself. As awareness kicked back in, the first thing she heard was a thundering rhythm in her ears. Her own heartbeat. Her whole body trembled as the adrenaline wore off, and the weight of the intense exertion hit her body all at once. She nearly collapsed, her body falling against the hefty iron of her weapon.
It was like this sometimes. She often found herself in unexpected places with long gaps in her memory. Her head was a mess. There were often long stretches where she forgot her own name. Forgetting was scary. She had no idea how long it had been, or what she had been doing. Lucidity offered little comfort from her fear, and judging from the blood all over, she was pretty sure things had gotten violent. It always seemed to when she blacked out. Her gaze settled on her hands, soaked in still-warm gore.
She really was a monster. Her nerves seemed to reach for something. A fear response, but her body was too exhausted. Someone had probably seen her as an easy mark. Threatened her. That was probably what set her off. Flight turns into fight, and her adrenaline goes into overdrive. She tried to remember the events, but just couldn't grasp it. Another gap. A miserable noise escaped her throat. Forgetting. Was it scarier than knowing she was a monster? She wasn't sure.
Her weapon was thrust deeply into the earth, and in her current state she probably wouldn't be able to budge it. She pushed against it, tossing herself back a few steps away from the carnage before her legs gave out and she collapsed to the ground. She would probably be unable to move from that spot for a while. A pang of nervousness sprang up in her heart. What if a vulture mistook her for a corpse?
Oh, well.
It was only then, finally able to rest, that she considered her memory a bit more. Come to think of it, what was her name again? The question was a very scary one to consider. If she forgot her own name, who even was she? Just a monster. If that's all that she was, why even stay lucid? It would be better to just fade into oblivion and accept it. She didn't want to be a monster.
Suddenly, she remembered. As the terror faded, more mundane sensations returned. The ache in her muscles, the burning in her lungs, and the tug on her neck. An old tape recorder hung from a lanyard around her neck. It was the most important item she owned. A memento of someone she couldn't recall. She lifted a lethargic hand and clicked the play button. The tape whirred to life, and she heard a familiar voice on the tinny speaker.
"Hello. You're Etsuko Terosore. If you're listening to this, that means you may have forgotten. I know forgetting is scary, but I promise you will be okay..."
His voice continued with the familiar spiel, and the memories rushed back. As a monster, it was hard to remember back then with true clarity. She remembered the lab, and she remembered being afraid. She remembered feeling other things, but it was hard to recall those feelings. It had just been numbness and terror for so long now. As for him, she couldn't even recall how long ago she lost him. Just that she did, and now all she had was his voice on tape. That the world became a lot more frightening and confusing once he was gone.
Etsuko struggled to sit up. She remembered now, at least in part. She couldn't allow herself to believe he was dead. As she had done so many times before, she resolved to find him. To claw back some semblance of sanity in this broken world. Because she wasn't a monster. There was a time when she wasn't, and maybe there could be a time where she wasn't again.
But it would have to wait. Exhaustion held her like a big, angry fist. She collapsed back onto the bloodstained ground. She just needed to rest awhile. Then she could go out and find him.
"Just for a while..."
And then she drifted off into a dreamless sleep. A twinge of some forgotten emotion bloomed in her heart. She truly hoped that she still remembered when she woke up.

Second Chance Love Ch. 5
Chapter 5
After taking a couple of days to rest, Ava was returning to the castle with Mitsuhide. "Are you sure you're feeling alright?" Mitsuhide asked Ava as they made the walk from his manor to the castle.
"Aren't you the one who was trying to get me up and about?" Ava replied.
"Yet you still fainted." He reminded her.
"I'm…doing better." She answered. "I won't…I won't say I''m fine…because I'm not. But I am better…besides I think it will be good for me to get back to work."
Mitsuhide nodded. "Too bad I will be losing my assistant."
"Like you really needed me." Ava replied. "I didn't even do much for you…I know it was all about you helping me…thank you."
"I don't know what you mean. You were helping me a great deal." He countered.
Ava sighed and shook her head. Mitsuhide always claimed to have ulterior motives when it came to his work, but Ava was able to see through him. Though he had the worst reputation amongst the Oda forces, his kindness rivaled Hideyoshi's. Where Hideyoshi's kindness had been open, Mitsuhide's was more subtle and hidden behind a mask to look like selfishness and deceit.
"You appear lost in thought, little one." Mitsuhide said, pulling Ava from her thoughts.
"What? You're not reading my thoughts?" Ava replied, a hint of snark in her voice.
Mitsuhide smiled. She was becoming a bit more herself every day it seemed. "Maybe I want to hear your thoughts aloud for a change instead of just reading them."
Ava rolled her eyes and shook her head. "No point in me voicing more of these thoughts. You would just deny my observations anyways."
The pair went back and forth a bit more before finally reaching the castle. By the time they did, Ava was in rather good spirits. They parted ways, Ava going to join her fellow seamstresses and Mitsuhide going to report to Nobunaga.
When Ava walked into the room the other seamstresses greeted her warmly. "Welcome back, Lady Ava!"
"We have all missed you a great deal."
Ava gave them a small yet tentative smile. "Thank you. It's nice to be back." She replied. "What can I help with?"
"Before we get to that, we have something we wanted to give you."
Etsuko, the head seamstress said, holding out a small box.
Ava took the box. "You guys didn't have to do anything special for me."
"Well, when we were informed of your return…and of your news, we wanted to do something special." Etsuko replied. "It's just some things we thought you might end up needing."
Ava opened up the box and felt tears of happiness stinging her eyes as she looked inside. There were several items, pieces of baby clothing, but then there was something that truly caught her eye. The familiar green fabric of the kimono she had made for Hideyoshi peaked out. She pulled it out to see a tiny haori coat.
"We know you had made that kimono for Lord Hideyoshi…we were able to go to the merchant and get the fabric to match. If you look there is also a haori coat of the same fabric in there for you." Etsuko explained.
"Thank you." She choked out between tears. She was both happy and sad. It was truly a thoughtful gift and it made it feel even more like she got to keep a part of Hideyoshi. "I…I love it.Thank…you all…so much."
The other women were moved to tears as well, but they could see the smile on Ava's face. In just a few moments, Ava was setting the box aside and hugging each of them. Once they got all of that out and Ava had collected herself, they got to work. A group of travelling performers would be coming through and they had placed an order for new costumes. It was a large order and it would take all of the girls pulling together to finish it in time.
As Ava sat, working on one of the pieces, she couldn't help but to think how good it felt to be working again. To be sewing and making clothes. It felt especially good to be making clothes for a group of performers. She knew that the costumes would be used in many performances that would bring joy and laughter to the faes of those who saw it.
What Ava was not fully aware of was the fact that a smile was slowly working its way across her face. Nor was she aware of Mitsuhide observing her from the shadows, his own face showing a warm smile.
"The lass is looking much better." Masamune said from his place beside Mitsuhide. "Seems getting back to work has been good for her."
"She just needed to rediscover life." Mitsuhide replied. "Perhaps one day that smile will be bright again."
"The fact that it's even coming back at all is thanks to you." Masamune reminded him.
Mitsuhide shook his head. "No. I still think Hideyoshi's last gift to her has more to do with it."
"I still say you could make her happy and take some of that happiness for yourself for once." Masamune countered. "It's clear you two have a connection."
"As long as she can smile again, that's all that matters." Mitsuhide replied. As long as she's alive in this world. I don't care the reason she smiles…just as long as she does.
The pair stayed observing for a moment longer before heading off to get some more work done. Mitsuhide had more information gathering to do, while Masamune went to the kitchen. He had to prepare for the evening and he wasn't about to let just anyone make dinner.
After putting in a full day with the rest of the seamstresses, Ava was feeling pretty good. She stretched as she stood up, trying to get rid of that working all day stiffness. She was about to pick up the box when Ranmaru was entering the room. "Lady Ava, Lord Nobunaga wants to see you." He announced.
"Oh, okay." Ava replied. She hadn't been expecting the summons, but after thinking about it, she should have known better. She bid the other seamstresses a good night and picked up the thoughtful gift they had given her.
"Here, let me cary that for you, Lady Ava." Ranmaru said, smiling.
"I can carry it. It's not that heavy." Ava countered.
"I know, but just let me help you." Ranmaru replied. "Besides, you've been working all day."
"And you haven't?"
Ranmaru smiled. "Okay, but I'm not pregnant. So come on, let me help."
Ava relented and allowed Ranmaru to carry the box for her. "Alright."
"Yay!" Ranmaru replied, taking the package. "I had wondered what the other seamstresses had been working on. So, they made you a gift?"
"Yes, some baby clothes." Ava answered. "And a new haori for myself."
"That was super thoughtful."
"Yes…it was." Ava agreed.
"We're all so happy that you've come back. Everyone has missed you." Ranmaru told her as they continued the walk to the audience hall.
"Is that why Nobunaga has asked for me?" Ava inquired. "He missed me?" She was having a hard time believing that.
Ranmaru gave her a cheeky grin. "You'll just have to wait and see."
They were soon arriving at the audience hall and walked inside. Ava was greeted by a feast and all of the warlords…with one empty spot.
"Wha…what's all this?" She asked.
"Your welcome back to the land of the living party." Mitsuhide answered, that scimitar smile on his face.
"I told you everyone missed you, Lady Ava." Ranmaru added. He was then taking her by the hand. "Come on, Lord Masamune has been preparing this feast all day."
"And I made all your favorites, Lass." Masamune added.
"Your absence has been felt, fireball." Nobunaga spoke up.
Ava allowed Ranmaru to pull her into the room and to her usual seat. She knew that had things gone differently, she would have had a new spot, next to Hideyoshi. But his place at Nobunaga's right was conspicuously empty. While Ava felt a pang of sadness in her chest, the knife didn't stab as hard as she had anticipated.
"I…thank you." She finally said after a moment.
"Well come on lass. Dig in or else I'll have to come over there and feed you myself." Masamune playfully threatened.
Ava gave him a glare. "I can feed myself." She replied. "Even
Mitsuhide didn't go that far." She was then picking up her chopsticks and digging into the tray that was set before her.
The banquet went on for quite a while. There was still a slight cloud over the affair, but it didn't feel as heavy as it had. Ava felt like she could bear things a bit more now. She even found herself able to smile and laugh with the men who had taken her in. The men she had come to care for and see as her family.
It didn't escape the warlords' notice however that Ava's smile and laughter were still not as bright as they once used to be. She had remarkably improved, but she was still not the same Ava as before. Perhaps she would never be the same again. A love and a grief like that truly change a person.
When the evening was winding down, Nobunaga was turning to Ava.
"Your room is as you left it, should you wish to return to it, Ava." He said.
Ava seemed surprised. "Oh…uh…thank you." She said, seeming hesitant. It hadn't really occurred to her that returning to the castle truly meant returning to the castle. Of course, now that she was a bit better and was no longer Mitsuhide's assistant, there wasn't a need to stay with him.
"Is something wrong, Ava?" Nobunaga asked.
"I…uh…I just didn't realize…and I didn't bring my things back with me from Mitsuhide's manor." Ava answered, coming up with the first excuse she could think of.
"Is that so?" Nobunaga replied.
"I wouldn't mind hosting you for one more night, little mouse." Mitsuhide replied.
"You can bring your things tomorrow." Nobunaga replied.
"R-right." Ava agreed, though she wasn't sure why, but the idea of leaving Mitsuhide's manor left a sour taste in her mouth. After the banquet ended, Ava was walking through the castle town beside Mitsuhide. She was silent, lost in thought.
"Something the matter, little one?" Mitsuhide inquired.
"Just…thinking." She answered.
"You've been acting rather odd since Lord Nobunaga informed you that you were free to move back into the castle." He observed. "Did it not occur to you that you would be returning?"
"I guess…I just…I don't know. I didn't think about anything." Ava answered with a shrug. "I mean…it makes sense…and I know you have many other things to do besides looking after me."
"But?" Mitsuhide prodded.
"I…I don't know. Just…you…you've been really…comforting to me these last few weeks." She confessed.
Mitsuhide chuckled. "You're probably the first person to ever say that about me." He replied. "And I've been rather harsh with you, I thought.
Forcing you from bed and practicaly throwing you in the bath."
"Well, yeah, there's that." She conceded. "But there's also letting me use your lap as a pillow every night. Then there was when you let me use you as a punching bag literally and figuratively."
"Are you saying you've found yourself growing fond of me, little mouse?" He asked, his tone teasing.
Ava let out a groan. "Maybe just used to you."
Mitsuhide chuckled. He would never admit to what Ava's confession did to his heart. He would never tell her or anyone how it felt to have her admitting even in the most roundabout of ways that she enjoyed being near him. That she found comfort in him.
"Should you wish it, you are always welcome at my manor." He finally told her.
Ava looked up at him in surprise. She then turned away, her cheeks reddening ever so slightly. Neither of them acknowledged the tender look in his amber eyes. "Th-thank you…Mitsuhide."
Mitsuhide wanted so badly to reach out to Ava and pull her into his arms. Thankfully he had plenty of practice and self-control. Else he might give in to these desires. All the feelings she was having right now were nothing more than a friend taking comfort from the closest source it was offered from. Granted, he would be whatever she needed. He would never admit it aloud, but he would give pull his heart from his chest and give it to her should she ask for it.

Wolves don’t Party with Sheep
I got this request last week, and I thought it was a neat idea. Thanks @etsuko-99 for sending me the ask.
When the Akuma alert sounded, most of the class had been at the end of year party at the park. They had been planning it for weeks and had been careful not to reveal its existence to the class problems aka Marinette, Chloe, and Nathaniel. The three had been has exiled from the rest of the call all year for their bullying of Lila and mean accusations that the girl was lying.
Class president? They voted to replace Marinette the first day of school.
Class picnics; the three weren’t invited.
Field trips; they got Bustier to exclude the three in the beginning of the year. Not that it mattered anyway; all the wonderful trips they had wanted to take had fallen through. They never had enough money to take it. And they never did the required paperwork.
Birthday parties; they weren’t invited to anyone’s in the class. No one went to Nathanial’s birthday party. Or Chloe’s. No one even bother to accept Marinette’s birthday party invitations, she mailed out a month ago. They even missed the required RSVP date on the front on purpose. The invitation was clear, if you don’t confirm your planned attendance, you can’t come. Then they told Marinette they were going to a party for Lila instead.
No one wanted the drama. No one wanted Lila to feel like she wasn’t welcome. And if the three found out, then maybe they should’ve been nicer.
Again, everyone from the class who was invited showed up apart from Adrien to Lila’s dismay. Alya assured the tearful girl that Adrien was probably just busy at a photoshoot, he’d be there if he could.
Lila had just stepped away from for a moment to take a call from Prince Ali when the Akuma alert sounded.
It was a socialite hurt by the malicious lies her so-called friends said about each other by each other’s back decided that everyone should be forced to reveal what they really think. The Akuma was called Two-faced (As soon as Two-face from Gotham heard about the new villain, he contacted his lawyer; someone was getting sued.) Every time someone talked; the world would hear their inner voice say what they really thought about you.
“We should wait for Ladybug,” Alya said. “She’ll be here soon. Nino, turned down the music we don’t want to attract the Akuma’s attention.”
“You don’t kiss me enough,” Alya’s voice was suddenly heard throughout the party, though the girl’s mouth was shut. “You’re amazing. I love how much you dream. You’re a little naïve. We’re perfect for each other. But what’s a girl got to do to get to third base?”
Nino blushed a scarlet red. There were snickers from the fellow students.
“Babe, a little awkward; maybe no one should talk.” Nino said. But as soon as his mouth closed. “I’ve already named all of our children.”
The laughter that resulted from this laughter the couple paralyzed.
“This is so amazing,” Rose burst out. As soon as she stopped talking. “Juleka? Look at me! I have been flirting with you for three years. You know what I got for it? Nothing. Do you like me or not? You think you got it bad, Alya. I once showed up at her house drenched in rain, in a t-shirt, and Juleka didn’t bat an eye. Stop complaining. At you got a boyfriend who wants to kiss you. All I got from Juleka was insecurities.”
Juleka looked torn between wanted to die from embarrassment and looking utterly pleased with the situation.
Alix snorted, “Still think it’s amazing.” She mocked. Her eyes widened when she realized she spoke. “Rose, you’re the definition of a ditzy of blond. I can’t believe we’re friends.” There were gasps. Rose looked at Alix with hurt eyes. “Honestly, I can’t believe your friends with me. You’re nice, girly, and super sweet. A freaking ray of sunshine. Everything I’m not. I love you for it. I kind of hate you too. You’re the daughter my wishes she had. I can’t stand you sometimes.”
“Ouch!” Kim said and gasped. His inner voice added. “This is way too serious for me. I should’ve just hung out with Ondine. And how is no one talking about how killer Max’s ass looks in those jeans?”
The questions was met with blinks.
“Damn, I owe Luka ten bucks,” Juleka slipped out. She quickly covered her mouth but she couldn’t stop what came next. “Luka dislikes all of you. It’s why he left Kitty section. He’s thinks you’re all gullible idiots. He always told me to watch my back around you. After what happened with Marinette, I see why.”
Mylene frowned. She thought Luka left the band because he didn’t have time for it anymore. “That’s really mean.”
“Truthfully, I saw it coming,” Mylene’s inner voice said. “What’s a guy like that doing in a band called Kitty Section? I mean really. But yeah, I totally called in it Kim being a little into Max. Like back in third grade. The Chloe thing was a massive attempt to hide his crush. I get it. Max can do better than a Neanderthal.”
“Hey!” Max glared. “Like you’re one to talk!”
“Have you seen Ivan,” Max’s inner voice hissed. “He’s a future UFC champion. You’re a future kindergarten teacher. Mylene, beauty, Ivan, beast. It only works out in Disney movies, honey. Besides at least Kim’s funny, and cool, and nice, and hot. Wow, I can’t believe he likes me. I’m a geek.”
Kim grinned, “I like that you’re a geek.” His inner voice, “He’s thinks I’m hot. He think I’m hot. He thinks I’m hot. …I wonder if Nino would be cool with a joint wedding.”
“NO!” Nino and Alya yelled together. Their inner voice, “NO!”
After that everyone was too scared to speak; scared of what they really thought be heard.
That when Lila came back to the party. A happy grin on her face. “Sorry everyone, Prince Ali was insisting I attend his ball. I hope he’s isn’t going to purpose again.”
“You’re all a bunch morons,” Lila’s inner voice echoed through the park. “But useful ones. I’ve never even met Prince Ali.”
Lila paled, “I didn’t say that!”
“Crap,” Her inner voice cried. “What the hell is going on? Do you know how hard it is to keep my stories straight? How hard I work to get these sheep to believe me? Well, not that hard. They’re idiots. I few grand tales and practically believe I shit gold.”
The class stared at her horrified.
“It’s not me!” Lila stomped her foot.
Her inner voice cried out, “Don’t look at me like that. You’re the dumbasses who believed me. It’s your own fault. I only told you what you wanted to hear. Add a few tears and you did whatever I wanted.”
Alya gasped, “Marinette was right.” Her inner voice, “What have I done. My blog is ruined. I’ll lose all my fans.”
Lila fought not to glare, “Marinette’s a mean bully,” She whined. “Remember? She’s been so awful to me since I got here.”
“She called me out on my lies,” Lila’s inner voice snickered. “I warned her I’d get her back. I told her I’d take all her friends away. She should’ve believed me. You guys are idiots who believe everything I saw. Oh, Marinette picking on! Why doesn’t Marinette like me? Did I do something wrong? Waa! Waa! Now I’m here and she’s not. So there! I won!”
Lila finally picked up one what was going on and covered her mouth. The class remained silent torn between wanting to scream at the girl and keep what they really thought secret.
At that moment, Marinette, Nathaniel, Luka, Adrien, and Chloe strolled to through the park with ice cream cones in their hands and big smiles on their faces. They talked pleasantly with each other, stopping when they saw the party streamers and the class.
Marinette didn’t blink twice, “Another class party?” She said sweetly. “Our invitations must have been lost.”
Her inner voice was cold, “Doesn’t matter. I wouldn’t have come to your party if you paid me. Why do you think I put the deadline on the invites? I knew you’d pretend to forget to RSVP. I only invited you to my birthday party because my mom made me. Something about being nice or whatever.”
The students of Bustier’s class reared back as if struck.
“It really pity you can’t come,” Chloe drawled. Her inner voice, “In addition to forgetting to RSVP, you must have forgotten that Marinette’s knows Jagged Stone and Clara Nightingale and a bunch of other celebrities; all of which are going to be at the party.”
“They’re having loads of fun here,” Adrien said brightly. “The party looks great.”
His inner voice was a lot colder, “I told them! I told Marinette, Chloe, and Nathaniel every time you had this party, and every other party, a picnic, a guy’s night, a girl’s night, anything. I told them Alya was the one who got Bustier to not let them on the class trips. Why did you think I never showed up to any events? They’re my friend I showed them the group texts where you all did nothing but insult Marinette. You were bad friends. You trusted a perfect stranger over freaking Mariette Dupain-Cheng. That’s why I stopped returning your texts, Nino! Why I stopped returning all of your texts! We’re not friends anymore.”
Mouths dropped. To his credit, Adrien let his ground and just sent a cold glare to his classmates.
“Mom saw the texts, Juleka,” Luka shook his head. “She’s disappointed in you.” His inner voice, “So am I. I couldn’t believe it at first. How could my own sister be so cruel? So vile. I know Lila didn’t get into your head. But I think feared did. You were scared these idiots in your class would turn on you too. You knew it was wrong treating Marinette the way you did but you did it anyway. I don’t recognize you anymore. I don’t even want to look at you right now.”
Silent tears slipped down Juleka’s cheeks. Rose did her best to comfort the other girl.
“We should go,” Nathaniel told his friends. “There’s nothing for us here.” His inner voice, “Honestly you guys ditching us was the best thing that could ever happen. I have best friends now. Chloe, Adrien, and Marinette are literally the freaking best. I told them how much I liked Marc, and they listened. Chloe actually ended up locking in a supply closest but it all worked out. We’re dating now! I only got a little claustrophobic too.”
“You locked them in a closest?” Marinette pinched her nose. “That wasn’t the plan. It’s kidnapping.”
Marinette’s inner monologue, “I’m not going to jail for you! Oh who am I kidding? Of course I’d go to jail for you. Better be for something cool.”
“It will be,” Chloe preened. Her inner voice, “You’re the best friend I’ve ever had. I’d pick you over all high-end couture in the world.”
“I’m not bailing you out for less than a felony,” Adrien chimed in with a smile. His inner voice, “Chances are I’m going to be right next to you.”
Marinette rolled her eyes, “Nathaniel’s right. We have to get ready for our trip. And my party.” She said. Her inner voice. “Thank you Alya for getting pushover Bustier to remove us from the class trip. Now while you guys are headed to the amusement park. We’re going to Metropolis, and Gotham, and New York City. We’re going on the best trip of our entire life while you guys watch Kim puke up fifty chili dogs… Again.”
Still the class was too scared to speak. Apart from Lila who glared angrily, “Oh please, like your birthday party will be any good?”
The five looked at her and the class with smirks.
“Oh course not,” They chimed together. “It’ll be a small get together.”
“If you call a thousand people small,” Adrien’s inner voice said. “I still can’t believe Marinette has so many friends. People are coming from all over the world for her birthday. Prince Ali’s going. My dad’s going! And he barely remembered my birthday this year. Like what the fuck! How did Marinette become the favorite child? Fine, though, I stole her parents. Also her room.”
Marinette side-eyed him. She knew had been finding more and more of Adrien’s stuff in her room. But she thought she was imagining things. Chloe did the same. Then the top bunk was always made. Again, she let it go. He slept over a lot. Chloe did too. Then he took over a drawer or two for some of this things. Again, not surprising. Chloe did the same; except she took over half of Marinette’s closet. Sometimes she’d come home and he’d be hanging out in her room playing video games. It was fine. Chloe tended to do the same; except for it was laying on Marinette’s bed on her phone.
…Wait, what?
“Jagged Stone performing for his favorite niece Marinette,” Chloe inner voice sang. “Clara Nightingale’s performing. Luka’s singing. They both invited all the celebrities they knew. MDC’s party. Did you hear about that?” The class gasped in shock. “It’s trending literally everywhere. Marinette Dupain Cheng’s party. It’s practically a red carpet event now. By the way Adrien, Sabine and Tom like me best.”
Again, Marinette had to side-eye her friends. Did they move in when she wasn’t looking? How did they move in? When did they move in? For god’s sake’ yesterday, she caught Chloe working behind the register while Marinette’s parents worked in back. She caught her dad teaching Adrien how to bake cookies and croissants.
“Peter Parker’s going,” Luka’s inner voice added on. “Marinette and him met each other at camp. And where Peter Parker goes, his parents follow. His parents: Tony Stark and Steve Roger ring any bells. And if Iron Man and Captain America’s going, the rest of the Avengers follow. They all RSVP’d.”
“Harry Styles,” Nathaniel’s inner voice repeated like six times. “If I wasn’t dating Marc, I’d go for it. Like, you have no idea; how much I’d go for it. Marc’s concerned. …He should be.”
Marinette smiled as her inner voice spoke what she was always too nice to say, “You were terrible friends. You turned against me for basically no reason. You threw me away. You followed Lila Rossi, the world’s biggest liar, because she told you grand stories and promised you things and opportunities. I’m happy you’re not going to my birthday party. Because you’re going to miss the chance to meet all those celebrities Lila lied about knowing. The chance to talk shop and create connections with the rich and the famous and be famous yourselves; the real reasons you ditched me. Most of the guests don’t know. But that’s fine because I’ll have real friends at the party; and you won’t be among them. Because you’re not real friend. You’re mindless, gullible sheep. …And Adrien, Chloe, I swear to the all gods, if you think you can just take over my room, you got another thing coming!!”
Both blonds didn’t bother to even pretend to look remotely shamed or scared. They just smirked.
It was at that moment, the Akuma two-faced came crashing into the party. All the documents, those in the class and not, scattered off screaming. The five took that opportunity to transform.
Ladybug, Chat Noir, Queen Bee, Viperion, and Renard Rouge came swinging to the scene.
Alya couldn’t believe her eyes. She had been replaced. How could Ladybug just replace her? She didn’t even have the guts to tell Alya!
Fury overcame her, “Ladybug!” The glasses-wearing screamed. Her inner voice, “Look at me. How could you do this? Why?”
Ladybug looked at her teammates. They nodded her a: Go for it. Ladybug swung over the the reporter. “What, Alya?” Her inner voice, “Why are you bothering me now?”
“You replaced me,” Alya stomped her foot. “I’m the fox hero. Not that poser.” Her inner voice, “I’m a much better hero than he’ll ever be. I should’ve been made permanent. I should’ve been made an official partner of you and Chat Noir.”
Ladybug glared, “You posted lies on your blog. You never fact checked. And my sources told me you frequently took part in bullying of three students.” Her inner voice, “You’re a bad journalist. Why did you think I stopped giving you interviews? All those lies you post from Lila Rossi about her, about me. You never even bothered to research anything. Then you ice’d out Marinette; the sole reason I even bothered to give you a chance. You and your classmates really hurt her and the other students. You were mean bullies. And you’re unworthy of being a hero.”
Alya froze. “But, I, it’s not fair!” She cried. “I didn’t know Lila wasn’t telling the truth.” Her inner voice “Crap! I forgot you knew Marinette. She probably told you everything. Ugh, why does she always have to be right all the time? It’s so annoying. At least Lila was fun. Besides, Marinette never even bothered to offer let me meet any of her celebrity friends. Or even mentioned she knew them And that’s so not cool. What kind of girl does that to her bestie? If Marinette had just told me she knew them, I’d have never believed Lila.”
Ladybug just stared at Alya in disgust, “We’re done Miss Césaire.” Her inner voice, “Forever.” Then she was gone.
When the Akuma was defeated, and Ladybug put everything back to the way it was. The students didn’t know what to say or do. Lila had taken the time to vanish form the party. The five continued they stroll through the park. Unfortunately, they had to walk past the class party again.
“Hey!” Nino called. “You guys can come join us if you want.”
“We’re really sorry,” Rose yelled.
Juleka didn’t say anything just looked at her older brother with pitiful eyes.
Alya rushed over, followed by the other students. “Girl, you were so right about Lila. She’s such a liar.” The classmates nodded. “I’m your bestie. I should’ve never forgot to RSVP for your party. If it’s not too late, I’d love to go. Maybe we can even join you on your trip overseas. I’d love to go the Daily Planet.”
“Yeah, me too!” Nino grinned.
“Count me,” Alix cheered and high-fived Kim.
Marinette looked them up and down, “It’s too late. Far too late,” She told them. “To go to my party, to go on the trip, to get back into my good graces, to be friends again. We’re not friends. And we never will be again. None of you be celebrating my birthday with me.” She gave them a cold smirk. “Wolves don’t party with sheep.”

How to Handle a Nico - Dinner at the Nishikino’s
Primary Pairing: NicoMaki Words: ~4.1k Rating: K Time Frame: Late in Maki’s 1st year and Nico’s 3rd year in college. Story Arc: Stand Alone
Author’s Note: This chapter was assembled from a patchwork of about a dozen instances I wanted to include and thus wrote each separately. And somewhere along the lines, MS Word decided not to sync between my PC and mobile devices, so I ended up with two, slightly differently edited versions. Thus, here’s hoping my self-purported prowess with prose was successful in stitching this scene into a sensible structure. Please forgive any unsightly seams.
Nico couldn’t remember the last time she had been this nervous. No, wait, just a few days ago, her first date with Maki. Well, first official date, not counting all of the not-actually-date-but-technically-were-dates from years prior. Unfortunately, that was quickly falling into second place as she approached the gate to the Nishikino home.
Perhaps the date had been easier because she knew Maki, knew Maki liked her, knew Maki liked spending time with her, knew Maki wanted to date her, and was fairly confident Maki was attracted to her. She had known all of these things even before they started dating officially. As such, looking back, she wasn’t sure why she had been so nervous for their first date, because with the exception of one little hiccup named Etsuko, it had all gone splendidly.
But the parental Nishikinos were more of an unknown. Nico had met both of Maki’s parents a handful of times throughout the years, but had never really gotten to know either. She was all but certain she would have little problems with Maki’s mother as she had apparently been talking behind the scenes with her mother about her and Maki’s developing relationship. And she had been quite supportive of Maki’s time as a school idol, so Nico didn’t think she would object to her intended career choice.
Maki’s father on the other hand… Nico remembered quite vividly when he almost made Maki quit being a school idol after her grades slipped the tiniest of bits; not even enough for her to drop from her position as top of her class. Umi had been the one to stand up to him, which made sense insofar as she understood having parents with high expectations. Still, looking back, Nico couldn’t help feeling a bit of regret that she hadn’t been the one to protect Maki. Sure, she had offered her support, but…
“Good evening, Yazawa-san.” A voice came over the speaker.
Nico jumped. Had she even pushed the button to announce her presence?
“Yes, good evening.” She replied as she recognized the voice of the Nishikino estate manager.
“Ojou-sama has informed me of pending arrival, though as always, you are most welcome here.”
“Thanks.” Nico replied as the buzzer sounded to indicate the gate was unlocked.
One gate down, literally. Nico thought as she made her way toward the front door. Though part of her wished Maki had been the one to answer the intercom, she was nonetheless thankful that it had been a member of the house staff with whom she got along well. At least it hadn’t been…
“D-Dr. Nishikino?” Nico sputtered as the door suddenly swung open to reveal a towering, bespectacled man who immediately fixed her with a cool and calculating gaze.
Damn. Why had she stuttered? This wasn’t the first time she had met Maki’s father, and if all went well tonight, it wouldn’t be the last. You can do this Nico! Sure it wasn’t the man she expected and she was caught a bit unaware, but… Gah! Stop being intimidated. You’re here for a reason! And that reason is Maki-chan!
“Yazawa-san.” Maki’s father stated flatly.
“Hi…” Nico cutoff by clearing her throat. “Good evening.” She corrected, offering a polite bow. “I’m…”
“I’m afraid my daughter will be unable to entertain your visit tonight.” Dr. Nishikino interrupted. “We are expecting an important guest who should be arriving presently.”
I’m an important guest? No, wait, of course I am! I’m Maki’s girlfriend now. So, buck up and tell him that.
“Yes, sir, that guest is me.” For emphasis, Nico indicated the stylish dress she had picked out specifically for the occasion. “I’m Maki’s date.”
“…” Dr. Nishikino raised an eyebrow but remained steadfast in his position.
“Nico-chan!” the voice of an angelic savior came from behind the barrier of the paternal Nishikino. “Papa, let her in.”
Dr. Nishikino stepped aside and…
Holy… Nico had to make a conscious effort to avoid letting her jaw hit the floor. Not that Nico, at any point, had forgotten that Maki was beautiful, but when the redhead went all out, it was all she could do not to stare. Though elegantly modest, the deep purple dress still managed to highlight Maki’s best features.
“You’re early.” Maki said, bringing Nico back to reality.
“I’m sorry, did I take you away from your precious piano?” Nico couldn’t help teasing a bit, figuring the younger girl had wanted to arrive at her parents’ home earlier for a few moments of nostalgia with the instrument she grew up playing.
“Yeah, actually.” Maki admitted as she glanced away sheepishly.
“Well maybe after dinner, you can continue your concert, but with an audience?” Nico pointed herself as if it wasn’t already obvious who she meant.
“I’d like that.”
“You look lovely, by the way. Purple always looks good on you, Maki-chan.”
“Thanks.” Maki replied as pink dusted her cheeks. “You look good too. I like when you leave your hair down. It makes you look more…” She trailed off.
“More?”
“Sorry, I meant…”
“More mature?” Nico completed what she believed to be her girlfriend’s thought.
“Uhm… yeah…”
“I’ll have you know Nico is always mature.” She squared her shoulders and placed her hands on her hips pridefully.
Maki raised an eyebrow in a way that left no question as to her linage.
“Anyway, I haven’t seen that dress before, is it new?”
Maki nodded. “Mama and I just got back a little while ago from picking it out.”
Huh… Mama and I were also just out shopping for my dress. Nico thought to herself. And, wait a minute… “We match.” Or at least they matched in the way their old idol costumes matched in overall theme and enough details to be an obvious set while maintaining enough individuality to be unique as well.
“We do?” Maki glanced down at herself before back at Nico. After half a second, she smiled. “Yeah, we do. What a nice coincidence.”
Nico found herself wondering if the coincidence was perchance planned by a pair of meddling mothers who meant well. She made a mental note to ask her mother about the issue later, if for no other reason than to thank her for the cute gesture.
“So, dinner isn’t for a little while yet” Maki continued “but they might have appetizers ready already so why don’t we head to the dining room and I’ll quick check?”
“Lead the way.” Nico decided not to bring up how she still got lost in the huge house, even after visiting frequently over the last few years.
“You coming, Papa?”
Nico realized she had all but forgotten the paternal Nishikino was still there. Stealing a quick side glance, she found him quietly observing the couple. If she was reading things correctly, his aura had warmed somewhat, though was no less calculating than before; gears were obviously grinding behind his stoic expression.
“Your mother and I will meet you at the table.” Dr. Nishikino stated. “I’ll go find her.”
As Maki took her hand to lead her through the house, Nico noticed her grip was tighter than normal. A lot tighter. Maki was more nervous than she was letting on. Just how worried was she about her father’s approval of their relationship? Nico already knew Maki’s mother was wholly supportive, as was her own, but the only things she really knew about Maki’s father were that he had high expectations for his daughter and was not particularly fond of idols.
“Wait, Maki-chan,” Nico said, stopping in the hallway before they reached their destination “hold up a moment.”
“Eh?” Maki uttered, not seeming to notice the change and almost yanking Nico’s arm out of the socket before being held to a halt. “Nico-chan?”
“What’s wrong?”
“Wh-what do you mean?”
“Maki.” Nico fixed her girlfriend with a steady stare. The redhead returned the gaze, though was far more furtive, and when she began to fidget with her hair, Nico reached out and gently touched her hand. “What’s wrong?” She repeated.
Maki released a puff of air. “I’m nervous, alright? I… I just really want Papa to like you.”
“I’m nervous too.” Nico admitted, her thoughts racing through things she could say to calm them both down. “But you know, he didn’t turn me away at the door, so that’s gotta count for something, right?” She paused for a moment. “Well, technically, he did, but that was before he realized why I was here, but he still let me in, so that has to mean he’s willing to give me a chance, right?”
“I just… I know he’ll bring up idols, and…”
“Maki-chan.” Nico took a step in to close some of the distance between them. “Nico didn’t become the No. 1 Idol in the Universe without learning a thing or two about reading her audience.”
“…” Maki’s expression wasn’t one of disbelief but of continued concern.
“Look, I’m not going to lie to your father about my career of choice, but I’m also not going to try to convert him into a fan or convince him that idols are the most amazing thing ever, even if I believe that myself.”
“I know…”
“And I am attending college and aim to get a degree.” Nico continued. “Sure it won’t be a fancy medical degree like yours, but I’m getting it while still being an idol. So that’s also gotta count for something, right?”
“Papa does respect hard work.”
“And Nico is a hard worker.”
“I know.” Maki affirmed, dropping her hand before leaning her head into Nico’s hand. “Nico-chan is one of the hardest workers I know when it comes to working toward her goals. It’s always admired, and envied, about you.”
Nico scoffed. “You say that as if you don’t work hard as well, Maki-chan.”
“Mmm…” Maki hummed in a tone that implied she was paying attention to something other than the conversation at hand.
Hand… Maki closed her eyes and nuzzled her cheek against Nico’s hand, causing her to open her fingers to increase contact. It should be fine here, right? Nico moved in the rest of the way and tilted her chin up. Maki followed her hand as Nico guided her down. Their lips touched and…
“Oh dear…” A startled voice uttered, causing the couple to jolt away from each other. “I’m terribly sorry to interrupt, Ojou-sama.”
“I-It’s f-fine…” A blushing Maki stumbled through.
Nico recognized the woman one of the newer members of the Nishikino house staff. She was responsible for general assistance wherever needed.
“Welcome, Yazawa-san.” The woman said with a polite bow, but when she righted herself, her expression was thoughtful. “Although, now that you’re dating Ojou-sama, perhaps Yazawa-sama is more appropriate?”
“Just Nico is fine.” Nico assured.
“Right, anyway, I’m on my away to retrieve some bottles of Cloudy Bay at the behest of the master.”
“White?” Maki inquired.
The woman nodded. “We’ve prepared a delightful shrimp pasta for the main course.” She turned to Nico. “Ojou-sama has informed us of your talent in the kitchen, so we hope to meet your standards, Yazawa-sama.”
Guess the new title is going to stick. Nico thought to herself. “I’m sure it will be great.”
“The caprese salads should be ready if you wish to head to the dining room now.”
“Tomatoes, of course.” Nico couldn’t help commenting.
“Yes.” The staff member confirmed. “We have also been informed of one of your preferences, so for dessert, we will be serving traditional crepes with lemon and sugar.”
“Sounds delicious.”
The woman smiled before bowing again to excuse herself and hurrying down the hall.
“Is there anything wrong with your father requesting white wine?” Nico asked, trying to gauge her girlfriend’s reaction.
“I don’t believe so.” Maki shook her head. “White is better paired with seafood, after all.”
“Yes, but…?”
“No, sorry, I didn’t mean it like that.” Maki shook her head again. “Cloudy Bay is actually one of Papa’s favorites. He’s quite fond of the New Zealand area in general.”
“One of his favorites? That’s gotta be a good sign, right?”
“I hope so.”
Nico took a deep breath, held it for a moment, then released it slowly. “Well, the salad is apparently ready, so we may as well get to it.”
Maki nodded before taking Nico’s hand once more to complete their journey to the dining room. Nico noted, thankfully, that her girlfriend’s grip was far more relaxed this time around.
Upon arrival, the couple was greeted by the Nishikino estate manager who showed them to their seats. Shortly thereafter, Maki’s parents arrived and took their own seats. Next the chef and her assistant from before arrived with the first course. Finally, the first bottle of wine was uncorked and the meal was underway.
“So, Yazawa-san,” Dr. Nishikino stated, drawing Nico’s attention “you’ve known Maki since high school, am I correct?”
“Yes.” Nico affirmed. “It was Maki-chan’s first year and my third.”
“I see. And were you one of the girls who helped convince her to become an idol?”
Well, that didn’t take long for the subject to come up. Nico thought to herself. Straight to the point, I guess, unlike a certain dishonest daughter of his…
“Actually, it was the other way around.” Nico replied.
“Oh?”
“I was in a disillusioned and jaded state back then, after my first attempt at forming a group fell through.” Nico admitted. “And it was Honoka and Maki-chan and the others that pulled me out of my funk and helped me remember why I adored idols so much and wanted so desperately to be one.” She couldn’t help smiling as fond memories flooded her mind. “I really do owe them all a debt of gratitude for that.”
“I see. And you are still an idol now?”
“Part time.” Nico nodded. “I was able to find a small production company that was willing to work around my classes. It fills up my schedule and keeps me busy, but also lets me keep my foot in the door.”
“Because you intend to go full time even once you’ve earned a degree?”
Nico wasn’t particularly fond of the wording of the question and had to resist the urge to call it out; had it been Maki and they were in a more casual setting, she likely would have done so.
“I do.” She said aloud instead. “And once I retire from being an idol, the degree will help me find other employment.”
“And what type of employment might that be?”
“Something still in the industry, if possible.” Out of the corner of her eye, Nico caught a suppressed expression of surprise on her girlfriend’s face. Understandable, as it was news to Maki as well. “Choreographer, trainer, costume design, heck maybe even a producer, someday. Basically, I’d like to pay forward my debt by helping the next generations of idols.”
“And one is able to earn a living in such an industry?”
“Others have before me; I believe I can as well.” Nico gave another glance to the redhead beside her. “I may not have the skills to become a life-saving doctor like Maki, but I can still do my part to make the world a better place; one smile at a time.”
“Medicine, law, business, engineering,” Maki’s mother suddenly spoke up “these are noble pursuits and necessary to sustain life. But poetry, beauty, romance, love, these are what we stay alive for.” She smiled at Nico. “I believe Mr. Keating’s words hold true for many things. Music, painting, writing, really the arts as a whole are what make life worth living.”
“Mr. Keating?” Nico inquired.
“The lead character of Dead Poets Society.” Maki responded. “We should watch it sometime, Nico-chan; it’s really good.”
“And it is because the arts are so important” Dr. Nishikino continued “that my husband and I strive to support them as much as possible. In fact, we will be attending a performance of The Barber of Seville late next month and have not even started sending out invites to fill our box. You two are more than welcome to join us.”
At this, Maki’s eyes lit up. “Next month? When?”
“I’ll message you the dates later, but it’s a weekend so you should be able to work it into your study schedule.”
Maki turned to Nico with an expression rivaling the one she wore when December started. “Do you want to come with me?”
Nico smiled at her girlfriend’s excitement and word choice. “I’d love to. But where have I heard that title before?”
“From my playlist.”
“Tchaikovsky?” Nico made sure to pronounce the name as correctly as she could.
Maki shook her head. “Rossini.”
Nico racked her memory. “Cinderella?”
“Yes, different opera, same composer.”
“One smile at a time, you said?” Maki’s father suddenly stated.
“Oh, yeah.” Nico recalled her words from a few minutes ago.
The barest hint of something tugged at the edges of Dr. Nishikino’s lips. “Well, if nothing else, you have succeeded in making my daughter smile.” He nodded toward Maki, directing Nico’s attention back to the mentioned reaction. “And as my wife and I can attest, that is not always the easiest of tasks.”
“… P-Papa…” Maki offered a mild protest as pink dusted her cheeks and her mother chuckled.
Nico couldn’t help a smile of her own as she turned back to Maki’s father. “I think I’m up to the challenge.”
“Indeed.”
Wait… wasn’t this a bit hypocritical? Nico suddenly thought. Why claim to be a patron of the arts while simultaneously disallowing one’s daughter from being an artist?
On occasion, Maki had bemoaned being railroaded into the medical career while her dreams of being a professional pianist were dismissed as a passing fancy. Yet she hadn’t acknowledged the contradiction. Was she even aware of it? With the level of reverence Maki held for her parents, Nico could easily imagine her remaining oblivious; well, that and Maki’s overall naivete in many aspects of life.
Should she tell her? Was it even Nico’s place say such a thing? Nico was no stranger to speaking her mind when it came to her own interests, or those of her siblings. And she was dating Maki now, which meant defending her girlfriend’s best interests also shouldn’t surprise anyone. Or at least what she believed to be Maki’s best interests, as her parents obviously felt differently.
“On a related topic, Yazawa-san, Maki has told us much about your shared love of music.” Dr. Nishikino continued.
Nico derailed her own train of thought and refocused her attention on the conversation at hand. “It is one of our favorite subjects to discuss… or argue over.”
“And you often listen together while studying.”
“I believe music helps keep us in a good mood, which then helps us study.” Nico explained.
“I think we can all attest to the positive effects of music.” The Nishikino matriarch said.
“Indeed.” Her husband agreed.
“And Maki-chan has helped expand my appreciation of other genres of music.” Nico turned to her girlfriend. “And I’d like to think I’ve expanded hers as well.”
Maki nodded an affirmation with a smile.
“Maki also has told us that she often helps you study.”
“She does.” Nico confirmed. “Maki is incredibly smart. Even if she doesn’t know the answer to a problem, she is often able to logic things through and help guide me in the right direction. Honestly, if I didn’t already know she was going to be a doctor, I’d’ve suggested she become a teacher.”
“Now that would be an interesting career choice.” Maki’s mother said thoughtfully.
“Hrm…” Her father seemed less than convinced. “So, do you help her study in return?”
“Well…” Nico started.
“Nico-chan helps in other ways, Papa.” Maki offered. “Even if she isn’t able to help me with a given topic, she helps ensure I take regular breaks so I can come back with better focus. She makes sure I’m hydrated and helps track my nutrition and is quite insistent on keeping a decent sleep schedule. Honestly, she’s better at taking care of me than I am.” Her eyes widened as her admission registered in her mind.
“That’s right,” Her mother continued with the thoughtfulness from earlier, though Nico was sure she detected some teasing undertones “wasn’t it Nico that saved Maki from herself back on her birthday?”
“Mama…” Maki was losing a battle in trying to keep down another blush.
“Maki is very diligent in her studies.” Nico stated. “And I’m happy to help where I can.”
“Hmm… sounds like another couple we know, right Dear?” Dr. Nishikino sent a sly smile toward her husband, the teasing more obvious now.
“… Perhaps.” Maki’s father conceded.
Was it Nico’s imagination or did she just catch another glimpse into the source of some of Maki’s behavior? The Nishikino patriarch wasn’t the easiest to read behind his stoic mask, but his daughter wasn’t always straightforward with her emotions either and Nico had figured her out fairly well by this point.
As far as Nico was concerned, the rest of dinner went quite smoothly. Once Maki’s father got past his initial questions, he remained mostly quite. It ended up being Nico and Maki’s mother carrying the bulk of the conversations, which honestly didn’t really surprise Nico all that much. Maki’s mother inquired about Nico’s family, though Nico suspected she already knew most of the things anyway and it was more for Maki’s father’s sake. Still, Nico wasn’t about to pass up the opportunity to brag about her amazing siblings and about how proud of them she was in taking care of the household and themselves in her absence.
After dinner, Maki’s parents excused themselves to finish up the day’s emails and paperwork. Nico couldn’t help but wonder if that would be something Maki would end up doing once she became more involved with the hospital administrative duties.
As for Nico herself, she joined Maki in the Nishikino music room for the previously promised private concert. There, she had happily settled into the best seat in the house, next her girlfriend on the bench. All in all, it was a wonderful conclusion to what she believed to be a wonderful night. However, as confident as she was, she still wanted to be sure, so she made a mental note to ask the one she believed would know best, or at least better than herself.
“So, how did I do?” Nico asked, once she was sure they were well beyond earshot of anyone even remotely associated with the Nishikino residence.
“You were perfect, Nico-chan.” Maki responded with a smile that sent a warm feeling through Nico’s chest. “I think Papa likes you and is fine with us dating, and we already know how Mama feels.”
Thank the gods… Nico thought with relief. And with that load off her mind, “Of course I was perfect,” she decided to get in some teasing of her own, after spending the evening watching Dr. Nishikino do so “Nico is always perfect.” She grinned and held up her signature gesture.
“Id…” Maki’s typical retort was interrupted by a yawn.
Nico laughed before continuing the tradition. “You love it.”
“… Maybe…” Maki managed to get out as her energy seemed to be leaving her rapidly.
Nico leaned her shoulder into her girlfriend. “Steady there, Maki-chan, you going to be alright getting back to your dormroom?”
“Eh? But, I thought…”
“You thought…?”
“I thought I was going to your place?”
“Well you can, obviously you’re always welcome, but…” Nico motioned to Maki’s outfit, taking the moment to enjoy the view as well “I figured since you don’t have a change of clothes, you wouldn’t want to put this back on in the morning.”
“It’s fine…” Maki stifled another yawn. “I just want to go home…” She blinked and shook her head. “I mean your home… Yours… yours and Nozomi’s, I mean… ueeehhh…”
Nico chuckled. “It’s your home too, Maki-chan.” By the gods did she want to kiss the redhead whose cheeks were now matching her hair, but even this late at night, there was a risk of being seen. Later. She promised herself. “Nozomi and my names may be on the lease,” she said instead “but that doesn’t make it any less home to you or Eli.”
“T-thank you…”
“You don’t have to thank me for that; that much is normal for couples, right? But you know, Eli does leave a lot of stuff in Nozomi’s room…” Nico thought aloud “perhaps I should clear out a drawer and make some room in the closet for you.”
“I’d like that.” Maki smiled. “I’ll be sure to bring some stuff over soon.”
“Good. For tonight, you can borrow your usual sleep shirt and we’ll figure out something else in the morning. I think the outfit I lent you the other day is clean, but if not, maybe Nozomi has something that will fit you.”
Maki nodded.
“Then it’s settled.” Nico took Maki’s hand as they boarded the train together. “Let’s go home.”

ɪ'ᴍ ᴛʜᴇ ᴛʀᴜᴍᴘ ᴄᴀʀᴅ!? (Ch. 4)
“The new Guardian members, in other words, the fifth and sixth Guardian, is...The Red Joker: Hinamori Amu! The Black Joker: Kanade Haruto!” Haruto’s face went blank at the announcement. Everyone started talking excitedly.
“The J-Joker? What the heck is that?!“
*To The Royal Garden* “What do you mean what?” Hotori looked at them, looking genuinely confused. Like he didn’t just go against their wishes.
“Oh, we’re having brownies today.” Nadeshiko slipped in. Like that was the proBLEM.
“I love the brownies that Nadeshiko makes!” Yaya cheered, stuffing her face with the chocolate delight.
“Not that!” Hinamori let out a loud yell, “You guys just brought us into the Guardians without permission, and what’s a Joker?”
“What? You don’t know? It’s a trump card.” Kukai held up said card and showed it to them.
“Trump card?” Haruto asked.
“That’s right!” Kukai pointed a finger at them.
“Hinamori, you have three Guardian Characters. That’s amazing, and that’s why you’re a Joker. Haruto, we just didn’t know what to name you. That’s all there is to it.” He took a bite out of a brownie as the situation was in wraps.
“That doesn’t help!” Hinamori yelled at him.
“The Joker has a special role to play.” This caught their attention.
“Special?” They asked.
“We Guardians always seem like we’re partying it up, but really most of our work is pretty boring.” Yaya slid in the conversation with a pout.
“So basically, all the Jokers have to do are the special missions.” He was chewing the rest of his brownie, still pointing a finger at them.
“Being a Joker sounds so nice.” Yaya complained.
“You’re right.” Kukai joined in.
“Anyway.” Daichi took their attention
“Here’s our cape, Amu! Haruto!” They help up a red and blue cape for the Jokers.
“Anything but that!” Hinamori yelled.
“It’s okay, Hinamori-san, you only have to wear it for official functions.” Hotori reassured. Then, with a sparkle, “Let’s work hard together.” He had sealed the deal.
*Skip*
Haruto was laying bed, cuddled against a stuffed sheep he’s had since childhood. His gaze landed on the cape hung with his uniform.
“Guess you didn’t have to stress so much about it, since you didn’t really have a choice, huh?” Reo floated up to him and snickered.
“Yeah, I guess. Not like I can just quit after they announced it to the entire school. Just imagine the rumours that would fly.” Haruto felt a shiver run up his spine.
‘Though, I guess i’m not that against it…’ A smile appeared on his face.
“Kids! TIme for dinner!” His mom’s voice rang through the house.
Getting on his feet he left his room and made his way to the kitchen. The plates were already laid out, his father already sat at the table.
“Welcome home, Dad.” He gave his father a smile as he sat down.
“Hey bud, how was school?” At the mention of school, Haruto’s smile got bigger.
“It’s been pretty good, actually.” This peeked his parents interest. His mother gave him a curious look as she sat down next to her husband. They were used to “Good” “Fine”, but they never heard anything different.
“Did something exciting happen?” His mother asked.
“Haruto made some friends!~” They looked towards Etsuko was hopping down the stairs with a grin on her face.
“Really? That’s great hun!” His mother gave him a proud smile which he blushed at.
“I actually ended up joining a club with them, too.”
“Really? What club?” His father questioned.
“They call it ‘The Guardians.’ It’s kind of like a student council.”
“Oh! I was Guardian too when I was you age.” His mother looked at him gleefully.
“R-Really?’ This shocked him. He actually didn’t know how long the Guardians have been a thing at this school, he figured it was fairly new.
“Yep! I was the Queen’s Chair! Those were the days.” His mother gained a nostalgic look on her face, staring off into the distance.
“That’s great and all, but can we eat? I’m starving!” Etsuko complained, accompanied by a loud growl.
“Of course.” Their father said.
“Thank you for the food!”
Haruto got distracted by a vibration. He checked his phone to see he had gotten a message for the Red Joker herself.
Hinamori:‘Something so weird just happened.’
Haruto: ‘What?’
Hinamori:‘You know that weird cat guy that tried to steal my eggs?’
Haruto:‘Yeah? What about him?’
Hinamori:‘He just appeared at my window, gave me a bag of snacks, bit my ear, then declared us enemies!’
Haruto could hear her yelling through the text messages.
Haruto:‘Well it’s nice that he gave you snacks? Why did he bite your ear? And by “us” do you mean the two of us?’
Hinamori:“He must of have done it because of the tart, or something. He said he was gonna tell me something and just ended up biting my ear! He said if we stayed in the Guardians, we’d be his enemies???’
Haruto:‘You’re easily lured, aren’t you? Well it must be something between him and Hotori-kun.’
Hinamori:‘I am not! How was I supposed to know he was gonna do that?”
‘He was at your window, I don’t think anyone but you could of heard him.’
Hinamori:‘....’
Hinamori:‘Shut up.’
Haruto: ‘Good night Hinamori-san lol’
Hinamori: ‘...Night.’
*It’s a new day!*
“Nice day, isn’t it?” Nadeshiko said peacefully, sipping at a cup of tea.
“Indeed, perfect for training subjects.” Kiseki agreed.
Haruto stared at them oddly. Somehow Kukai dragging Hinamori across campus was seen as being peaceful.
“I’m going to pick up the pace!” Kukai shouted as he zoomed on by.
“So, I’m a Joker too, right?” Haruto asked.
“Yes.” Hotori confirmed.
“Then am I gonna have to do that too…?” Haruto was worried. He wasn’t all that fit, there was no way he could handle that.
“Not unless you can do character transformation.” Nadeshiko informed.
“O-Oh, that’s good…” Haruto looked down at his biscuit (or are they cookies? I don’t know) in fear. ‘I’ll just keep that to myself then.’
“Amu-chan, keep fighting!” Yaya cheered as they ran by again.
“W-Wait! Why are we racing all of a sudden?” Hinamori yelled cas she clung to the rope.
“If this is enough to make you give up, the you won’t be able to complete the Joker’s special missions.” Daichi told her casually, as Kukai gleefully dragged her around.
“You keep saying special, but just what these special missions, anyway?” Hinamori asked exhaustedly. Haruto watched also, curious to what his “duty” would of been.
Kukai slid to stop and dropped the rope. Hinamori fell into him, hands on his chest as he steadied her. Haruto could faintly see a blush appear on her cheeks as she looked at him.
He felt a small pinch of envy appear, but it left as quickly as it came. I mean, yeah, it would be nice to do that but it’s just as nice to sit next to friends, having snacks. It’s all good.
Hinamori quickly jumped way from him, which he kinda just smirked at. She crossed her arms in the Hinamori way, ” So what are the special missions?”
“X Egg hunting. That is the joker’s special duty.” Kukai answered.
“Kanade-san, have you fought an X Egg before?” Haruto’s attention was taken by Hotori.
“Um, I’ve fought a couple. I didn’t really know what I would have done if I won, so I kind of just ran away…” Haruto was lying. He was able to change them back with character transformation fairly easily, but he wasn’t going to tell them that.
“Since you’re a joker also, you’ll be helping Hinamori-san with finding them and help her purify them.” Hotori instructed.
“Don’t worry about it too much though, we’ll be there to help too.” Nadeshiko gave him a reassuring smile.
‘I really wasn’t all that worried about it, but thanks I guess.’
“I’m glad Hinamori-chan is a Joker with me,” The three Guardians looked at him questioningly, “Alongside her, we can help people believe in their dreams again. I think that’s so amazing.” He looked down at his hands with a blush.
They looked at him with shocked faces, before each one was adorned with a bright grin.
“That’s a great way to look at it, Kanade-san.” Hotori praised, as Nadeshiko nodded alongside him.
“Yeah! It’s like were heros!!” Yaya yelled.
“Yeah. Heroes...” Haruto blushed.
*Ding Dong Dang Dong* *Time skip*
Haruto was walking through the halls when he heard excited chatter. Walking to the noise, he saw a group of girls hanging around a board, and one with pink hair caught his attention.
Pushing through the crowd, he reached Hinamori who was staring at a poster in disbelief. The poster was a news article that said “Lovey Dovey with J!?” and had a big picture of Kukai and Hinamori holding onto each other on it.
“As expected of Hinamori!” Someone said.
“You just got joker’s chair, and now you’ve taken Kukai’s heart, too!” Someone else squealed.
“Hinamori-chan...I-Is this true…?” Haruto asked quietly, shocked at what he was seeing.
She tore the poster down and crumpled it to a ball, “No. Of course not.” She cooly said, walking away.
“Cool and spicy!” They chanted.
Haruto quickly ran after his fellow Joker, to walk alongside her.
“She’s great!”
“He looks so cute in the royal cape!”
“What unbelievable jokers!”
“So cool!”
Whisper spread through the student body as they walked down the halls together. “You’re doing it again, Hinamori-chan…” Haruto said, looking at her worriedly.
“It’s not like I mean too. Another facade has been created.” She said sadly.
Walking into the classroom, they were greeted with a couple of girls talking to each other.
“No way! Is it true, Yuki?”
“You’re transferring overseas so suddenly?”
A girl with dark green hair and blue eyes gave a sad nod.
“Really?” “Where are you going?” More girls crowded around her.
“America.” She answered.
“That’s Haroba Yuki?” Hinamori question softly.
The girls surrounding Haroba tried to reconcile her, “Cheer up. Even if we are separated, we’re still friends.”
“Yeah, that will never change.”
Haroba only gave a small nod.
Haruto’s eyes widened as he felt something. He gave a look towards to Reo who only nodded at him.
“Give me your new information.I’ll call you.” A girl said
“Liar.” This took everyone by surprise.
“Character change.” An ominous voice rang out.
“Huh? Whose voice was that?” Hinamori started looking around furiously.
“You heard it too, Amu?” Ran said.
“It must be…” Haruto mumbled.
Haroba threw her stuff to the floor, causing everyone to back up.
“Liar! You will change! You will change and forget me!”
“Yuki, we would never…”
“That’s mean, saying that.”
Haroba pushed them to the side as dashed out of the classroom, the girls calling after her.
Haruto’s eyes noticed something, a small little egg trailed the girl.
“That was…” Haruto started.
“An X Egg?” HInamori asked, “Then the voice was…”
:Amu!” Ran said to her.
“Right.” Haruto and Amu ran after the girl and her X Egg, but stumbled into someone.
“I’ll go on ahead, HInamori-chan.” Haruto said, running to the side of the collision and towards where he saw her run off to.
As he neared closer and closer to the egg, his earring glowed brighter and brighter. He ran into a plain-like place and heard a loud scream. Haroba was looking face to face with the egg. The egg began to crack and the light left her eyes. As the X character came out she completely collapsed to the ground.
It turned and faced the other Guardians, when they got there Haruto doesn’t know, but whatever.
“Destroy!” Long strands of english letters attacked the Guardians and they all lept out of the way.
“Reo, let’s character change.”
“Right.”
Diamond shaped ribbons appeared in his hair and and a black choker with a moon trinket on his neck. He held out his hand, and with a poof of purple sparkles and white and purple megaphone appeared in his hand.
“Lunala Roar!” Haruto held the megaphone to his mouth and with a loud scream, purple rings flew from the megaphone and towards the X Character.
“Uh-oh.” The character flew out of the way of the attack, before flying out of the area with a “Yahoo.”
“Oh no you don’t you little punk! Get back here!” Influenced by his chara change, Haruto let out a war cry before launching himself after the chara.
Jumping from tree to tree, he chased the chara with determined roars. The chara stopped at a building and threw the doors open. Haruto could faintly see the back of Hinamori in it.
Pushing himself to go faster, his legs burned at the sudden exercise he was getting. The chara started attacking Hinamori who ran further into the building.
Running into the building, he was suddenly accompanied by the King and the Jack, “Hinamori-san!” Tadase caught her attention.
“Tadase-kun, Kukai, Haruto…” She said in surprise, looking at the three boys.
“Be careful. That’s an X Character, born from an X Egg.” Hotori warned.
“An X Character?”
Responding to Hinamori’s question, the character looked at her with it’s big grin, “Yes, I am an X Character!” It shot the ominous letters out again.
Haruto jumped out of the way, as Kukai and Hotori got behind the chairs with Hinamori.
“Over here, you little mongrel!” Haruto drew the attention from the other Guardians.
The Chara shot the dark strands of the English alphabet towards him.
“Full Moon Shield!” He yelled into his megaphone once more, but insteads of rings a purple shield covered the area in front of him and protected him from attacks.
A bright light shone behind the seats, probably Hinamori. He hoped she would hurry, because he can only hold these attacks for as long as he can yell. Thankfully Hinamori lept out from the seats as Amulet Heart and got the X Characters attention. She jumped and tried to catch it with her hands, but it dodged every attempt.
“I don’t want to change!” He could hear the voice of Haroba’s inner thoughts from the chara.
“It’s fine! It’s fine to change!” This caught the chara off guard and gave Hinamori the time to use her finishing move.
“Negative Heart: Lock On!” Putting her hands in the shape of a heart, she thrusted them outwards. “Open Heart!” Pink hearts began pouring out of them, purifying the X Character.
A small stewardess appeared where the X character once was, “Attention, please. Thank you, Amu-chan. Thanks to you, I’m at ease.” She said.
“You’re who Hatoba-san really wants to be?” Hinamori asked.
“Yes. But it’ll still be a secret for now. I’ll be sleeping for a bit longer, until Yuki-chan realizes it herself.” The chara answered, before going back into her egg with a “See you again.”
Haruto let out a sigh of relief as the character change released. He was glad it was all over. He hoped nobody brought up his personality with the character change, though…
The Guardians followed the egg back to its owner's body, where it flew back into her chest.
Haroba let out a grumble as she got up, “What am I…”
“You collapsed here.” Nadeshiko told her.
“Are you dumb?” Hinamori took her attention, “No matter how far you go, you’ll always be connected under the same sky. Your friends will always be your friends, no matter where you are. Isn’t it okay to change?” Hinamori scolded the girl with her hands on her hips.
“Well something like that. I was afraid to change, too, you know. Let’s get along together from one scaredy-cat to another.” Hinamori held her hand out with a smile and a wink,
Haroba looked at Hinamori in awe before taking her hand, “Yeah.”
“Ah! Class is gonna start!” Haruto yelled.
“Later! I’ll be going ahead of you guys!” Kukai yelled, sprinting off towards his classroom.
“Kukai, that’s not fair! Don’t leave me behind!” Yaya yelled, chasing after him.
*Time Skip*
Everyone was sitting in class staring a man with brown frizzy hair, kept in a low ponytail. He had rectangular glasses and dark green eyes. The name on the board said “Nikaidou Yuu.” He also had two big stacks of books on the desk.
“While your homeroom teacher is on maternity leave, I’ll be taking over the Grade 5 Star Class-
“Sorry we’re late!” Hinamori slid the door open, walking in alongside Haruto and Haroba. While she walked up to the teacher she tripped on the ledge and fell over. This also knocked the new teacher down as well, along with books and papers.
“This is the second time today.” She mumbled, sitting up.
“Oh, I met you before. You’re a teacher?” She questioned.
He gave her a close eyed smile, “Yes I’m Nikaidou Yuu. Now that I have a chance to greet you properly… Hello, Himamori Amu-san, Kanade Naruto-san.”
“Himamori?”
“Naruto…?” They mumbled together.
He began to get up, “Anyway, first period’s-”
He stepped on a piece of paper and slipped again. The whole class started laughing at him.
“He’s quite the character.” Hinamori said, to which Haruto nodded at.
‘This man is our new teacher? He seems quite nice, actually.’ Haruto thought to himself, excited to see what this man will bring to the rest of the school year. Hopefully all good things.

Yeah so like remember when I said I wasn’t gonna post the Yoki ni Hakarae! translation? I lied, I’m doing it anyway because this is a cool song. And it’s stuck in my head. Constantly. This song is about the Keroro Platoon anticipating the time when they can stop working their asses off and make someone else do it...or something. That’s what I got out of it. There’s like no concrete context to this song. Shrug Fun fact for some clarification about a word in this song: the shachihoko is a mythological creature that’s basically a tiger-headed carp. It’s said to be very fierce and temple decorations are often modeled after them. This song has a thing for fish in general. I want seafood now. As always, comments/corrections welcome. I intend to get to another song eventually. I’ve got my eye on Christmas Kerol...

How to Handle a Nico: Reassurance
Primary Pairing: NicoMaki Secondary Pairing: NozoEli Words: ~3.7k Rating: T? Time Frame: Late in Maki’s college career and early in Nico’s idol producer career Story Arc: Stand Alone
List of all HtHaN scenes
Author’s Note: Not too long ago, a comment over on AO3 made mention of liking how I portray Nico demystifying Maki, “breaking her behavior and responses down to a science” and that got me thinking that the reverse is true as well. Maki also analyzes and learns Nico’s behavior and responses. She may be a bit slower in figuring things out, but she is just as driven in her desire to learn everything she can about Nico.
On thinking more about this topic, I realized that a lot of the scenes I have been writing as of late have been more or less using Nico as the audience surrogate. And while I think that’s fine, I would like to turn things around every so often and write a scene or two that focuses on Maki’s perspective on things.
The moment Maki entered the room, she knew something was wrong. “Nico-chan?”
“Maki-chan!?” Nico jolted before looking up at her girlfriend. “I didn’t hear you come in.” Her hand moved to do something on her laptop before she flashed a smile and her signature gesture. “How were classes?”
No. That wasn’t right. Maki pursed her lips and furrowed her eyebrows as she moved across the room.
“Maki-chan?” The raven-haired girl’s smile faltered, just a bit at the lack of response.
The redhead knelt behind her girlfriend, draped her arms over her and nuzzled her nose into her hair.
“You don’t have to lie, you know.” Maki said softly.
“Wha…?”
“That was probably fakest smile you’ve ever shown me.”
“Oh…” Nico’s shoulders slumped.
“What’s wrong?”
“Noth…” The older girl cut off as the younger girl grunted disapprovingly. After a moment, she sighed. “Sorry, Maki-chan, I… I guess I just don’t want to make you worry.”
Maki pressed herself more against her girlfriend’s back. “I’m already am worried.” She admitted, her mind running through memories of how she had watched her girlfriend ride an emotional rollercoaster for the last couple of weeks. And while she was more than happy sharing in the highs, she was feeling increasingly helpless during the lows. “Tell me, please.” She requested. “If there is anything I can do to help, anything at all, please let me know. I want to help, Nico-chan.”
“You really don't get it, do you, Maki-chan?”
What? A flash of panic skittered across Maki’s consciousness. What didn't she get? What had she missed? Did she do something wrong? Was Nico upset?
“You’re doing it right now and you don’t even realize it.”
“Huh?”
“Just keep doing what you are doing.”
“Hugging you?”
Maki could feel the other girl chuckle under her.
“Well, that too. But what I mean is… keep being you, Maki-chan. Continue to cheer me on. Stay by my side. Just… uhm, how did that song go from the Phantom again?” Nico pondered for a moment. “<Love me, that's all I ask of you.>” She couldn't help singing the lyric in English.
“I do love you, Nico-chan.”
“I know. And I don’t think I could ever tell you properly how happy that makes me. So, like I said, just keep doing what you’re doing, because I love it.” Nico leaned back against her girlfriend. “I love you, Maki-chan.”
A warm feeling spread through Maki. No matter how many times she heard Nico say it, she doubted she would ever tire of it. Still…
“I just…” Maki struggled for a moment to find the best words to express her concerns. “I wish I could do more. You…” She was about to list off all the things Nico did for her when she was interrupted.
“Maki-chan.” Nico said firmly. “Not once have I ever thought that you don’t do enough for me. Not once have I thought, ‘Gee, I wish Maki-chan would do more in our relationship.’” She took her girlfriend’s hand, raised it to her lips and placed a gentle kiss on the back of it. “I love you, Maki-chan and I love all that you do for me.”
“… Sorry…” Maki heard herself say before she thought better of it.
Nico chuckled again. “What are you apologizing for now?”
“I wanted to reassure you because you looked upset when I came in, but you ended up reassuring me instead.”
“But you did reassure me. Weren’t you paying attention?”
“Wha…?”
“You saw that I was upset, didn’t buy my attempt to hide it and came over to comfort me. You reassured me and didn’t even realize it. Geez, you’re dense sometimes.”
“Mmmph…” Maki felt a pout come to her lips.
“You reminded me that no matter what, I have your support. And the support of many others.” Nico explained. “I’d forgotten that for a moment.”
“What the heck?”
Nico sighed. “Because I stupidly started reading some forum threads.” She motioned to the laptop in front of her.
“I don’t get it.”
“Remember that deal I was trying to set up with that other small production company?”
“The one that fell through?”
“Yeah. Anyway, it seems Etsuko somehow found out about it and has spent the day stirring up the embers of anger with my old fans who still feel betrayed. There’s a full-fledged flamewar spreading across several idol sites.”
“Hasn’t Etsuko done enough to you already?” Maki wrinkled her nose while saying her name.
“Apparently not.” Nico shrugged. “But it’s alright. You can’t have a fight on a forum without two sides and that other side is made up of those who still support me. I really am blessed to have such loyal fans.”
“Yeah, you do have some great fans.” Maki agreed.
“And that thing falling through isn’t even that big of a deal.” Nico continued. “Sure, it would have been nice, I mean connections are connections and alliances are alliances, but it’s not going to break us. Egao Jōshō will still become the No. 1 Idol Production Company in the Universe.”
“You mean it isn’t already?” Maki couldn’t help asking, allowing a hint of teasing into her tone.
“Nope.” Nico responded with a surprising amount of sincerity, enough that it made Maki second guess her teasing for a moment. “But so long as amazing people like Hanayo, Tsubasa,” she hugged Maki’s arms “and you are around, we’ll get there. I know we will.”
“Mmm…” Maki tilted her head down to plant a kiss on top of the other girl’s head.
Nico began to twist around and push herself towards her girlfriend. Maki sat back and allowed the other girl to slide onto her lap. From her new position, Nico wrapped her arms around Maki’s neck so she could pull closer. Maki responded by turning her head to meet the incoming kiss.
“We’re home!” A voice announced from the entry.
And just like that, the spell was broken. Maki pulled away, immediately lamenting the sigh Nico released before rolling her eyes.
“Welcome back!” Nico called, getting to her feet. She turned to her girlfriend and offered a hand. “Let’s go greet them, shall we?”
Maki nodded quietly, accepted the help up and allowed herself to be lead toward the door.
“Hey, you two!” Eli greeted with a smile as the couple came around the corner. “We have a surprise for you!” She indicated a long and slim, but sizable box leaning against the wall.
“Elicchi noticed this while we were out shopping today.” Nozomi explained, already moving to open the box. “I consulted the cards and they said it would prove useful.” She slid the item out of the box before turning to reveal it.
“A keyboard?” Maki stepped forward to get a better view.
“It’s a little beat up because it was used, but I tried it before they reboxed it and I think it sounds alright.” Eli turned her attention to the redhead approaching. “Still, we should probably let you, our resident pianist, make the final decision on whether we keep or ret…” She cut off as she suddenly found herself in an unexpected embrace. “Xорошо?” She uttered in confusion.
“Thank you.” Maki murmured before letting go. She turned to find Nozomi already grinning and holding her arms wide. Suddenly aware of her emotionally charged behavior, she blushed.
“You’re welcome, Maki-chan.” Nozomi said, as the younger girl sheepishly moved over to hug her as well. “So, do you want some help setting it up?”
“Yes, please.”
With all four girls working together, it took less than five minutes to get the device up and running. Immediately on powering up the keyboard, Maki began pressing keys to listen to the sounds they made. Eli had been right, despite the external casing being a bit banged up, the sound quality was surprisingly good so the internal components were fine.
“Are you going to play something, Maki-chan?” Nico asked, obvious anticipation seeping into her voice.
Maki looked up to find an expression of excited expectation on her girlfriend’s face and she couldn’t help meeting the smile with one of her own. The older girl knew how to cook, willingly did house cleaning duties, took care of her when she was sick and overall did many things to look out for Maki’s wellbeing. And while Maki’s abilities to reciprocate in those departments was lacking, there was one thing she knew, for certain, she could do that never failed to make Nico happy; play the piano and sing. Or maybe that was two things, but whatever.
“Definitely.” Maki agreed as her mind began shuffling through what she knew she could play from memory.
One song, in particular, repeated itself in the cycle; the one Nico had brought up earlier. She did a quick mental check to ensure she remembered all the lyrics and chords. But, it was a duet, in English… Would Nico pick up on that? Did she know the words to her part? Wait… in the play, the song ended with the two characters kissing! Eli and Nozomi were here! Would Nico still want to… yes, of course she would want to; Nico loved public displays of affection. And Nozomi would definitely tease them about it because that’s just what Nozomi did. Still… it did seem to be a fitting song for the situation… and she hadn’t sung a duet with Nico in far too long… and it would definitely make Nico happy…
Swallowing her embarrassment, Maki began to play. “<No more talk of darkness. Forget these wide-eyed fears.>”
Nico’s eyes widened with recognition. Maki could tell by her expressions that the older girl was quickly reviewing Christine’s part in her own mind to prepare. She fidgeted with her phone, likely considering looking up the lyrics. However, when she smiled, Maki knew she was ready.
“<Say you’ll love me every waking moment.>” Nico sang, moving to a position opposite the keyboard from her girlfriend, maintaining steady eye contact the entire time. “<Turn my head with talk of summertime.>”
For someone who had likely only heard the song less than a dozen times, Maki had to admit she was impressed with how well Nico performed the part of Christine. Though she didn’t play an instrument, nor did she write songs, there was no question that Nico’s musical knowledge and prowess easily rivaled that of Maki’s. Well, actually, there were a few songs that Nico had written mostly on her own, and she definitely had helped refine many of the songs Maki and Umi had written back in high school. And, if she put her mind to it, Nico probably could play an instrument if she wanted.
Nico giggled a bit when Maki substituted her name for Christine’s and it was enough to bring Maki’s focus back on the duet they were sharing. By the gods, she loved that smile. Nico’s smile was undeniably genuine now, not fake like she had tried to show earlier. This was the smile that had worked its way deep into her heart years ago. Seeing that, Maki was certain she had made the right choice in songs.
“<Anywhere you go, let me go too.>” The couple sang in unison as the song approached its conclusion. “<Love me, that’s all I ask of you.>”
As they held the note for the required number of beats, Nico reached up to Maki’s cheek. The redhead responded by leaning forward, across the keyboard. Finally, they ended the song and their lips met.
“<Bravi! Bravi! Bravissimi!>” Nozomi intoned in Italian.
Maki tore away from her girlfriend, almost throwing herself off balance with how quickly she stood up. Silently, she cursed the blush she knew was already flaring across her cheeks. Gods, she hated this part of herself. Nico’s lips turned down into a frown. No. That wasn’t what she wanted. She wanted to see Nico smile again. But what could she… well, the kiss had ended prematurely… again… and she did like, no, she loved kissing Nico… but Eli and Nozomi were watching…
“Geez, thanks Nozo…” Nico began to grumble.
Oh, what the heck. Maki crushed down her embarrassment once again and reached forward to place her hand on her girlfriend’s cheek. The raven-haired girl’s eyes widened again, this time in surprise as she cut off what she was saying. Before she could decide against it, Maki leaned forward and pressed their lips together. She felt Nico stiffen for the briefest of instances, but then she relaxed and wrapped her arms around the taller girl’s neck to pull her deeper into the kiss.
Closer. More. Nico.
Maki shoved all thoughts of the audience aside and let herself get lost in the moment, almost tipping over the keyboard as she tried to get even closer to the girl she loved.
After a little while, it was Nico who began to break away, and with no shortage of reluctance, Maki allowed her. Ah, that was more like what she wanted to see. Nico’s eyes were unfocused, her breathing was heavier than normal and she even swayed a little unsteadily, all proving how deep she had dived into the moment with her.
Maki couldn’t help glancing over at Nozomi, who thankfully remained quite this time, though Maki decided she could do without that overly-satisfied smile. Eli looked like she wanted to say something but was unwilling to be the one to break the silence.
“Mmm…” Nico hummed contently as she came back to reality. She smiled as her gaze met Maki’s before murmuring. “That was lovely.”
“Quite lovely indeed.” Nozomi agreed.
“Uhm, yes.” Eli spoke up. “That was a lovely song, though I cannot place where I might have heard it before.”
“Oh, it’s from Phantom of the Opera.” Nozomi explained.
“Ah, that’s why.” The blonde nodded. “I’ve never seen the show, just heard some of its music here and there.”
“Well, perhaps that’s what we should watch tonight.”
Maki couldn’t help wincing a bit and quickly tried to hide it.
“You object, Maki-chan?” Of course, the ever-attentive spiritual girl would notice.
“No, I just, uhm…” Maki fumbled for an explanation. “It’s not that the movie is horrible, just that… well, I grew up with the Broadway production…”
“Grew up with Broadway?” A quirky expression crossed Nico’s face. “Maki-chan, the movie came out when you were only, like what, five…”
“Eight.” The redhead corrected.
“Whatever.” The raven-haired girl dismissed. “Anyway, you would have grown up with that as well.”
“Not really.” Maki shook her head. “My parents love the theater and took me to see shows on Broadway when they traveled to New York on business. They wanted me to appreciate the theater and the arts as much as they do. And the movie is just… I dunno… Butler’s voice is too…” what had that one reviewer called it? “rock ‘n’ roll? I mean I know The Lord Lloyd Webber…”
“The Lord Lloyd Webber?” Nico raised an eyebrow.
“Technically, the Right Honorable The Lord Lloyd-Webber, but…”
“Huh… royalty…” Nico shook her head.
“Nobility.” Maki corrected. “And he’s a life Peer, not a hereditary Peer.”
“Whatever.”
“Anyway, I know he liked Butler, but it’s just not what I’m used to. The Phantom is supposed to have a smooth, powerful and seductive voice. And…”
“Yeah, well not all of us can just go see Broadway plays whenever, Maki-chan.” Nico pointed out. “So, the more widely available Hollywood production is good enough.”
Nozomi giggled. “Nicocchi, have you forgotten you’re dating someone who can take you to Broadway whenever?”
“I… no!” Nico protested. “I’m sorry, Maki-chan.” She glanced apologetically at her girlfriend. “I didn’t mean that like it probably sounded. And I wouldn’t want to take advantage…”
“I want to go.” Maki interrupted. “I love Broadway. And I would love to go with you sometime, Nico-chan. We could see any show you want, even if I’ve already seen it; especially if it’s Phantom.”
“Really?” Ruby eyes sparkled.
“Honestly, when we all went to New York as µ’s, it felt strange not to see a show.” Maki remembered the trip they had all taken a few years back. “But I didn’t know if anyone else would want to go, so I didn’t bring it up.”
“Sorry, Maki-chan,” Nozomi spoke up “I didn’t realize you felt that way. I would have gone with you.”
“Same here.” Nico added.
“I would have gone as well.” Eli chimed in. “I’ve seen some of the dance numbers in online videos, but seeing them in person is an entirely different experience.”
“Maybe…” Maki’s mind raced with ideas. “Maybe we could all go sometime?”
“All four of us?” Nozomi inquired.
Maki nodded. “We could join Papa and Mama the next time they go for business. There’s plenty of room on the plane. We could get a box to ourselves.” Amethyst eyes lit up. “Maybe we could even get Box 5!”
“We wouldn’t want to impose.” Eli said.
“You wouldn’t be.” Maki shook her head. “As I said, my parents love the theater. But they really love sharing that experience with others who might be interested. They bring friends and business partners and such all the time. And they’ve told me before that I could bring friends if I wanted. I guess I just haven’t had friends who were interested in theater before.”
“Maki-chan.” Nico’s shoulders slumped in an exaggerated display of exasperation. “How many musicals have we watched together?”
“I, uhm… a lot?”
“And you didn’t know I liked musicals?”
“Well, yeah, but the stage is different from the screen…”
“Yeah, it’s live.” Nico grinned. “And what have I said about listening to recordings of my idol music versus seeing a concert live?”
“Live is better?”
“Exactly. And Eli is a former ballet dancer, so we know why she is interested.” Nico motioned to the blonde who nodded affirmation. “And Nozomi… probably just wants to check out the chorus girls…”
The purple-haired girl giggled.
“So, you guys want to go?” Maki asked tentatively, despite pretty much knowing the answer. When the expected three confirmations were given, she smiled and continued. “I’ll ask my parents when they’re heading over next.”
Nico practically skipped around the keyboard. Once on the other side, she threw herself at her girlfriend in an excited tackle hug. “This is going to be awesome!” She bounced up and down happily, pulling Maki along with her movements. “I’m going to have to check online to see what shows are running.”
Maki couldn’t help but laugh at her girlfriend’s exuberance. And knowing that she was responsible for Nico’s excitement made her all that much happier.
“We’ll leave the planning up to you then, Maki.” Eli glanced at her girlfriend, who nodded. “We’ll see whatever show, or shows, you two want.”
“In the meantime, are you really that opposed to watching Hollywood’s version, Maki-chan?” Nozomi asked.
“Not really, I guess.” Maki twirled a strand of her hair around her finger. “If Eli hasn’t seen either the movie or stage version, seeing the movie first might be the better order to do things.”
“Alright then, I’ll see if I can find it one of the services.”
“I’ll go make dinner.” Nico said, turning toward the kitchen. “Would you be so kind as to provide some accompanying music, Maki-chan?” she asked over her shoulder.
A smile pulled at Maki’s lips. “Of course.”
“I’ll…” Eli started.
“Elicchi.” Nozomi interrupted. “Please take your usual spot, relax and be your adorable self.” She smirked as her girlfriend’s blush. “I’ll join you in a moment so we can enjoy Maki-chan’s concert together.” She then began to fuss with the remote in order to find the movie.
Once her audience was ready, Maki began to play.
“So… Maki-chan as Raoul, huh?” Nico mused as she crawled under the covers to join her girlfriend. “Would owning a hospital today be a kind of modern equivalent of a viscount?”
“Maybe.” Maki replied. “I’m not sure, really.”
“But Nico thought Maki-chan knew all about royalty and stuff.”
“Nobility.” The younger girl corrected again. “And I don’t know everything. Though I think I remember Mama or Papa telling me that members of Nishikino lineage were included within the Kazoku.”
“So, I’m dating someone of royal blood?” The older girl suddenly sounded excited.
“Noble. And maybe?” Maki conceded. “But I’m not entirely sure. I’d have to ask them again to remember what rank we may have held.”
“So, Nico really does make a good Christine.” Even in the dimly lit room, Nico’s smile shone splendidly. “Not only are we both amazing singers, but we are both dating royalty.”
“Nobility.” At this point, Maki figured the other girl was doing it on purpose to annoy her.
“Though given the choice between Raoul and the Phantom…” Nico continued, apparently ignoring the correction. “I don’t think I’d take either.”
“Oh?”
“Yup. Nico is quite happy with her choice.” That said, Nico pulled herself closer to her girlfriend and snuggled into her. “Nico-nii’s Maki-chan really is the best choice.”
Maki’s heart skipped a beat and warmth gathered in her cheeks. Strange. Even though they had been dating for a few years now, Nico still managed to have that same old effect on her.
“Hee… is Maki-chan blushing?” Nico propped herself up on her elbow so she could lean over the other girl.
“I… hey…” Maki turned her head. “D-don’t look at me…”
Nico laughed.
“Mohhh…”
“Anyway,” Nico settled back down beside her girlfriend “thank you, Maki-chan, for a wonderful evening.”
“Mmmm…”
“Today was kind of rough and that whole flamewar forum thing didn’t help.” Nico continued. “But then you came home and reassured me that, all things considered, I’m doing pretty good.” She smiled. “Really good, actually. Really, really good.”
“I’m… glad I was able to help.”
“You did.” Nico confirmed. “More than I think you realize.”
“Hmmm…” Somewhere in the back of Maki’s mind, she felt like had considered something like this before; if just loving Nico was enough. After a few moments, she realized she wasn’t going to remember and decided to just be happy that Nico thought it was enough, even if Maki still wanted to do more.
Well… there was one other thing she knew she could do that made Nico happy… though, maybe happy was the wrong word, but…
“Maki-chan?” Nico asked as the other girl turned toward her.
“Nico-chan…” Maki let her desires color her tone as she pushed herself up to a position over the other girl.
Nico reached up to pull Maki down into a kiss. As their lips met, the pleased sound Nico made let Maki know her actions were appreciated.
Author’s Note Continued: I swear this scene was not originally intended to turn into a discussion about the Phantom of the Opera. I had Nico say sing that one line initially just as a reference to the fact that the couple often watch musicals together. Then my µ’s muse started working a bit of overtime and the scene almost quadrupled in length. Not complaining, mind.
And I guess there is now a keyboard in Nico and Nozomi’s apartment. I have little doubt it will come into play - pun intended - in a future scene or two.
And there is a New York trip being planned. That has also been added to the notes for a possible future scene or two.
And now I need to double check to see if the Original Broadway version of Phantom is still on my iPod so I can listen to it the next time I drive up to the cities.
