open starter!

his head hurt, but that was nothing new. he pressed his fingers to his eyes, hoping to get momentary relief. he missed the safe and warm confines of a 3 A.M. bathtub.

he wasn’t sure how he ended up at the bar at every event or establishment he went to, but here he was. he didn’t really drink much, just enough to get him on a light buzz so he wouldn’t let his attitude slip with every stranger that approached him. he didn’t like getting into fights  that much anymore (his teenage self would be shocked). his coat was hung on the back of the chair he sat in, his nervousness making him a little hot and sweaty. he never knew why he kept coming to things when all he did was get overwhelmed, pretend he wasn’t, and then drink, but such was life.

he had noticed the 20′s apparel (a piss poor theme, he thought, he would have preferred a 70′s disco theme any day). but, if there was anybody around him, he didn’t notice. he was too occupied with staring into his glass and figuring out what he was going to do to make himself a little less red, a little less sweaty, a little less... this. he reached back to slip his hand into his jacket pocket, pulling out an orange pill bottle. prescription painkillers. he popped one into his mouth and swallowed it with a bit of... what did he order again? it was bitter, contrasting from his usual affinity to sweet and fruity drinks. he guessed he needed something a little stronger.

he noticed a shadow out of the corner of his eye, and supposed a person had either sat down next to him, or was in his general vicinity. ignoring would be rude, so he offered a simple, “good evening, or... whatever.”

Holy smokes! That last art piece you did! Are you self taught or did you take classes? I'm in class right now and no one bar the teacher can do that.

I visited art school for something about 3 years, but most things, especially the ones I do with ink, are self-taught. I once stumbled upon a book with different ink techniques, read a few pages and liked it a lot. Never been one to follow instructions so I just started imitating it and now, many years later, I’m posting Notte Stellata :)

I wish you luck! Most importantly, have fun with your art - that’s honestly the thing that matters the most. And screw instructions and rules and things like that if you notice that you don’t like following them!
