really got me giggling how much we talk about the magic of first teammates and how special that relationship is (lando and carlos, yuki and pierre, basically max and daniel) and then there’s 2007 rookie lewis hamilton who entered the sport and immediately pissed off his first teammate, fernando alonso, a TWO TIME WORLD CHAMPION so much they became one of the most infamous purely toxic and intense teammate rivalries of all time.

I think everyone who is so upset about F1 Academy needs to take a breath and remember this is not the only series they are racing in.

The end goal is not to take some 16 yr old girl and just shove her into an f1 car and call it a success. The goal is to get these women up the formula 1 ladder and do it in a realistic manner. Most of these girls are competing in their various f4 seasons at the same time. Or others like lia block do rally cross, doriane pin was supposed to race in le mans, chloe chambers is killing it in America! The goal of f1 academy is to fucking normalize women being successful in motorsport and giving them opportunities to be successful!

Like when talking about f1 academy we talk about how the cars are 'to slow' but the important part is they are in the cars and getting that practice and those points and the cost isn't coming out of their pockets. F1 academy is getting these girls into f1 teams development programs. Which is huge because if you look at it you'll realize both Bianca Bustamante and Maya weug are the first women in their teams respective programs!

They are getting access to equipment, facilities, trainers, and some of the best teams in the world for motorsport and all of this is in part to f1 Academy. And this series is allowing them to get a majorly important thing, say it with me now, SPONSORS! Because let's be real if they didn't have the publicity of f1 academy they likely wouldn't have some of their life changing sponsorships.

Anyways this makes no sense but everyone should shut up and go support these ladies because there's a chance the future female f1 driver is out there watching right now and she deserves to feel inspired, represented, and supported from the very beginning

did not intend to disappear for two months but i decided to use the off season to relax and get situated with going back to school after a few years off. work was also crazy so i was trying to balance all of that with writing but it was too much. so a new schedule i will probably stick to (we shall see lol) is writing during race weekends and taking a break when there is no grand prix going on.

What is with the practically psychotic hate for Lance Stroll? I'm not even his fan- more indifferent- but the hate he gets is sickening. Like just see the recent 'Never have I ever' vid- so many top comments on youtube, instagram etc. are just spouting shit about him (attacking his looks, calling him window licker wtf etc.) based off the 'Never have I ever stood up someone question' (and of course they conveniently ignore all the other drivers that also said they have because it's trendy to hate on Stroll).

Of course, standing up someone sucks but first of all we have no context at all, and more importantly, it's clear the commenters don't actl give a shit about that because they're only hating on Stroll. This is literally just one instance of the way these F1 'fans' are so quick to seize any opportunity to put down Lance. Honestly, it's so off-putting, pathetic and sad.

I’m a bit too young to have been a Webber fan, so not sure how he was perceived when racing. I get the sense that he was a bit too ‘serious’ for the general public to really embrace him. No hate to Mark, but there’s a sense that he was always a bit of a ‘wet wipe’ and in more recent years, that he’s got a bit too big for his boots. He’s not seen as the Everyman and is very much perceived as the ultra-wealthy class. Which turns off most people.

Daniel has, strangely, never really been viewed that way despite being a driver when F1 was even MORE about wealth and expense than when Mark was racing. Like, objectively he is ALSO part of the ultra-wealthy class, but he’s not perceived that way. I hope I’m explaining this well enough, but there’s just this vibe here when people talk about Daniel vs. Mark and even Oscar. It’s: he’s one of us and they’re one of THEM. I really doubt that Oscar will ever reach the same level of national treasure that daniel still is to us.

A lot of it is probably personality based: Mark was seen as too serious and depressing (lol sorry Mark) and Oscar is seen as too introverted and middle-of-the-road. There was/is just something about Daniel that’s difficult to put into words for Australia. The exuberance and love for life that he has really really got into people’s heart and was seen as such a representation of Australian pride that it’s no wonder he’s still seen as so influential. I’ve heard people joke that he’s our “favorite son” but that is honestly exactly how I’d describe it.

Ironically, I also think him being done so dirty at the end of his career and just taking it on the chin has solidified his place in people’s hearts: no complaining, no vindictive tell-all interview, just came home and lived his life. Maybe it has to do with Australia’s “tall poppy syndrome”, but we love an underdog. And I think there’s this tender feeling towards daniel now specifically because he DIDN’T get a happy ending. Oscar, yeah he might win a WDC and, of course, Australian’s will be proud of him but then that’s his story kind of over, you know?He’ll be adulated, but he won’t be loved like Daniel. Daniel is ours.

My impression has always been that even Australians who don’t necessarily watch F1 still know who Daniel is and like him for how he’s represented Australia. Don’t get me wrong, I know Oscar has a lot of die-hard Aussie fans, but I don’t feel like he has reached that beloved status outside of the f1 audience. I love how you say he’s Australia’s favourite son because I know a lot of people who were at the aus GP this year said there was so much Daniel merch at the race. I think Aus GP is the only event where you can still see Renault merch because of Daniel.

I think it’s also because Daniel is so proud to be Australian. iirc whenever he’s been asked about why he’s always so happy, he’s always said it’s because he grew up in sunny Australia and I think the fact that he always goes back to Australia in December and him making that effort to stay connected to his roots there when he could have been off to some fancy holiday instead. There’s so many comments here and there on Reddit about someone seeing Daniel drive down the highway in his old hilux. I think it truly shows how Daniel loves being one of yours and why he’s likely still going to be the face of motorsport in Australia for years to come even if Oscar will very likely have more wins than him by the end of the year.

like it or not daniel is a driver with a legacy, and to watch him leave the sport without the actual goodbye he deserves feels wrong.
