Russia has few serious competitors for the Darwin Awards this year. 🎖 ⚛️
Russian forces who occupied the Chernobyl nuclear plant stole potentially deadly radioactive substances from research laboratories, Ukraine's State Agency for Managing the Exclusion Zone says.
[ ... ]
It said the Russians entered a storage area of the Ecocentre research base and stole 133 highly radioactive substances.
So what is going to happen to these substances back in Russia? Some possibilities for the looters.
Use them to paint Latin Zs on their homes.
Place them next to their household shrines to Vladimir Putin.
Sell them as souvenirs on avito.ru or ozon.ru (Russian eCommerce sites).
Dump them down the toilet when they belatedly discover how dangerous they really are. Let the workers at the local sewage treatment plant deal with the radiation.
Those options may be too late for many of the radioactive occupiers of the site of the world’s worst nuclear accident.
Earlier this week, Ukraine's energy minister German Gulashchenko said Russian soldiers exposed themselves to a "shocking" amount of nuclear radiation, saying some of them may have less than a year to live.
"They dug bare soil contaminated with radiation, collected radioactive sand in bags for fortification, breathed this dust," Mr Gulashchenko said on Facebook on Friday after visiting the exclusion zone.
"After a month of such exposure, they have a maximum of one year of life. More precisely, not life but a slow death from diseases.
"Every Russian soldier will bring a piece of Chernobyl home. Dead or alive."
Russia has created a tremendous amount of bad karma with this brutal invasion. The brutality is matched by their own boundless stupidity.
It will be interesting to see if Russian medical authorities report a spike in radiation sickness over the next year or two. If Mr. Galushchenko (correct spelling) is right, it may take only a few months for such diseases to begin to show up among the Russians. Even those who do not show obvious signs of radiation sickness in the near future will likely experience an increased risk of cancer for the rest of their lives.

Despite the hell which Ukraine is going through, people have not lost their sense of humor there.
The Ukraine Ministry of Defense sent out the above tweets announcing the Russian departure from the contaminated Chernobyl exclusion zone.
Russia may have been kicked out of the World Cup and EuroVision, but they are still trying hard for the Darwin Awards.
FFS, it’s not as if the site of humanity’s worst nuclear accident was unknown. Even the older signs still visibly warn visitors about the danger.
