MISCONCEPTION #4: Felting is a craft. MY TAKE: To some degree may be... Though there is no clear definition and lots of overlap between the terms “crafts”, “fine crafts”, and “art”, there are subtle differences that distinguish the three. CRAFT - is an activity of making things by hand - a loose definition that can also describe a fine craft or an art piece. Craft, however, is an activity, accessible to anyone, with results that can be easily replicated. Think of scrapbooking, knitting, or your kiddo’s /niece’s/nephew’s traced hand turned a turkey tail as a Thanksgiving decoration. All are fun activities. Felting can be crafty as well. What defines craft as”fine” is its quality of a finished piece and a maker’s original vision. For example, Easter eggs decorated from a coloring kit bought at Target would not be considered fine crafts. 😏Though your own designs painted on eggs with a precise skill might. 💪 There are unspoken standards (more about standards in a separate post), that separate some crafty felted items from fine crafted. When would felting be considered an art form? When a maker’s statement, vision, idea, or emotions are expressed through the felting medium and made with a certain degree of quality and skill. Also, fine crafted things tend to be focused primarily on a maker’s skill, while artwork is likely accompanied by a vision/statement- and often abstract- in addition to refined making process. When you see felted creations, think of what it may represent. A crafty thing, a fine craft, or a piece of art? The answer may be in the eyes of a beholder.
