"Sofja Petrowna" is one of the few surviving accounts of the Great Purge in the Soviet Union actually written during the purge era. . Sofia's son Kolja, a faithful member of the communist party gets arrested, from that day on she doesn't see him again. She's powerless against the state. Her coworkers suddenly get arrested too or dismissed and Sofia gets mistreated because she protected a friend. But Stalin and his people wouldn't do anything wrong, right? . It was very surprising for me that the events in this book about this horrible time are not as hard as I know they actually were. The language is unremarkable and the characters are no new heroes, but it has the twist of reality. There's no straining after effects, but it portrays desperateness and dazzlement very well! It touched me. It's an contemporary document of crime, eventhough the characters are invented. . 1,5 million soviet people were inprisoned in the time of the "Great Purge".
