"There is 15 cases in Udmurt. In the absolute inflection in the singular, the case suffixes are added to the stem, and in plural, to the plural suffix. Cases: Nominative, Accusative, Genitive-Adessive, Ablative, Dative (Allative), Elative, Inessive, Illative (in the possessive inflection: Inessive-Illative), Egressive, Transitive, Approximative, Terminative, Instrumental, Abessive (Caritive) and Adverbial. Nouns, adjectives, pronouns and numerals can have a possessive inflection. Possessive suffixes include information on the person (1st, 2nd and 3rd) and number (Singular and Plural)."

Writing system and pronunciation

These are the letters that make up the alphabet: a б в г д е ё ж ӝ з ӟ и ӥ й к л н о ӧ п р с т у ф х ц ч ӵ ш щ ъ ы ь э ю я.

Ф, х, ц, and щ are only used in Russian loanwords and names.

Grammar

Nouns have no gender, two numbers (singular and plural), and fifteen cases (nominative, genitive, accusative, ablative, dative, instrumental, abessive, adverbial, inessive, illative, elative, egressive, terminative, prolative, and allative).

There is no adjective declension. Personal pronouns can only inflect in the allative out of all the locative cases (the latter seven).

Verbs are conjugated for tense, mood (conditional, imperative, and indicative), person, and number. Some dialects also use an optative mood.

Dialects

There are three dialects: Northern Udmurt, Southern Udmurt, and Besermyan. The standard language is based on both Northern and Southern Udmurt.

There are minor differences in phonology, morphology, and vocabulary.
