"Yeah, and it was a heartbreak I couldn't have ever predicted happening. Like overnight. It's literally what happened. Laurel disappeared overnight.

And I never really felt that attached to someone. We were friends for a long time, and we grew closer and closer, and - I don't need to give you the whole backstory. But it definitely would have hurt a lot less if they didn't just ghost me. If they could've just told me to my face about whatever it was that made them think it was okay to just...

Vanish from my life. That's what made it worse. I had no explanation. Just unanswered texts and unreturned phone calls without know if for sure Laurel was alright out there. I don't even want an explanation for it now, it would be rubbing salt into an old wound."

"I don't handle bad experiences well. I shut down. Or I can lash out first, but I typically shut down and hide away. Then I mope about it like a kicked puppy. It's not fun for anyone, especially Ric, who can't even escape me when he's one room away from me.

And I guess Santi is spared of my whining for the unforeseeable future.

I do think Laurel in some instances gets a kick out of it, if they're not rolling their eyes at me, which I guess my emotional turmoil is amusing or something. Please to be of service."

He folds the paper down so his view was no longer obstructed, eyes landing on a familiar face that he liked to avoid where possible occupying the table nearest to his.

"Laurel," He says curtly, no warmth in the greeting. "I thought I could feel daggers my way, should have guessed you were here."

The unsureness that swept over him made the room feel smaller than it was, distorting the space he existed in as his mind had to re-register someone he knew in the present and merge them with someone he knew only in memory. Two distinct figures in his life had become one in the same and it leaves him with more questions than before.

He doesn't want to bombard Laurel or overwhelm himself, so he remains silent for a beat instead, taking in what they have to say while he brings himself to the bed, picking up the pictures to both make a space for himself to sit and to look through them once he had.

Spotting himself in certain ones as he shuffles through them felt like a strange interactive version of Where's Waldo? where what he was seeing was himself at ages that his mind had tried to block out.

And he was seeing Laurel in them too.

"You were a kid," He says softly to their reciprocated apology as he looks an image of her that showed the sentiment that he spoke. At six and seven and eight it was easy to look at sixteen and seventeen and eighteen and misconstrue being more grown than him as being grown-up, but it felt different at twenty-nine when he had lived through those ages himself.

( He wouldn't have known how best to handle a goodbye with an eight year old at eighteen, he's sometimes not even sure he's handling things as best as he could present day with his six year old. )

The question of when he had gotten out should have been the easiest one to answer, but like everything else in his childhood it was it wasn't how he should be.

He knew the age he had gotten out of the system, that was just numbers and dates, but he had no idea if he would ever reach an age where he felt like he had gotten the system out of him.

"I took off at sixteen. Absconded, I think that's what they called it. I knew no one was going to come looking, I realised at around nine that the whole permanent family thing was never going to happen for me and that's the first time I remember feeling true anger about something first instead of sadness."

He had no way of knowing back then the way that would shape the rest of his life.

"And I think even back then when I was a little nothin' who knew nothin' that I knew I was more okay with feeling angry than I was with feeling sad. That got me into all kindsa trouble over the years."

He's okay with being candid about what he knew was his worst flaw because he feels concrete in knowing that that wasn't him anymore. He had a handle on it, on himself, he hadn't lost his head or his temper like that in almost two years and he wouldn't again.

If he reminded himself of that fact at any given turn, he was sure it would solidify itself into a truth.

"I'm better with that sorta stuff now. I'm a better guy now."

Laurel was positive that she hadn't gotten it wrong — the realization had come on too strong and was sinking in further with every glance down at the picture and then back up at Dallas — but the confirmation still felt like it might knock the wind out of her.

Shame wasn't an emotion that Laurel took lying down. She was a justifier. Everything she did had its reasons, and remorse was a wasted endeavor.

But she didn't think she could find it in herself to dismiss this in the same way. She knew how to do it, the arguments she might make in her own favor, but the image in her hand — Dallas, slightly gap-toothed, beaming — all but begged her to reconsider. She'd run when she was eighteen (and twenty-two, and twenty-eight, and thirty-seven) because she'd felt like she had to, but she'd turned him into collateral damage on the way.

She thought she'd left something for him on his bed before she drove away. A teddy bear, maybe? But no note, no goodbye. She hadn't wanted to see the look on his face when she told him she was leaving.

Shame didn't even cut it.

Their hands slightly numb, they moved a box from the edge of the bed to clear a space to sit and threw some discarded pictures next to them further down the bed to wordlessly invite Dallas to join them. It was nice to have something to do with their hands, even just for a second, while they listened to him work through his memories like he was excavating them from frozen ground.

"You're sorry?"

It came out like a bark, incredulous and disbelieving, before they could stop it, and they immediately wanted to take it back, to ask for a do-over and start again, gentler next time.

"I just...no, god, I'm sorry. I didn't even say goodbye, I didn't..." There were a lot of things they didn't do. So many memories, good in bad, had been beaten and buried under the guise of growing up, maturing, moving on — in the name of starting fresh and of remaking themself in order to survive. It'd always felt like liberation before. Now, they weren't so sure. What had forgetting him freed them from?

Guilt, maybe. But all of her efforts to free herself of guilt meant nothing now, and what kind of happiness had she let herself forget for all of that nothing? "I'm sorry."

She shook her head and finally met his eyes; she'd been focusing on his chin for the most part. "When did you get out?" Funny that she chose almost the exact same verbiage as one might refer to a served prison sentence.

she seemed different than most days. 

not that she had ever been mean or rude to him, but there was something about laurel lynn, a hesitation that came over her whenever he was close enough. she’d been avoiding him like the plague these last few weeks, only choosing to hang out with him whenever they were around other people. as though that wasn’t awkward enough. everyone else paired off easily. micah and charisma, alexei and laurel lynn. they always left francesca and him, obligated to spend the entirety of the day appearing oddly suspicious around everyone else. 

they all hung out at a diner on the outskirts of the city last weekend. charisma and micah seemed to bring out the light in every situation, finding a way to unite them all together in laughter and playful banter. alexei was grumpy as ever, mostly murmuring to himself and clinging to laurel’s side. laurel seemed distracted, pretending to be busy whenever he tried to get her alone. and then there was francesca, visibly frustrated by the toll their little lie had taken on both of them. 

although he had yet to figure out why this bothered her so much, marcus had grown more vocal about his feelings for laurel lynn as far as francesca was aware. it’d taken weeks for him to figure out that he wanted more than friendship with the lively girl but now that he’d confessed it out to his best friend, it seemed she was going out of her way to make things happen between them. because today wasn’t only different as far as his crush’s actions wre concerned. today was monday and laurel lynn jacobs just so happened to be seated in the spot he and frances usually snagged up for study sessions. 

“hey.” he beamed, slowly setting down the pile of textbooks he’d carried over for his italian literature class. “how’re things goin’?” would she make another excuse and leave him deserted? he sure hoped not. 

“i was gonna study with frances but she’s —” he cut off as he felt his phone vibrate in his pocket. marcus smiled apologetically, retrieving his cell only to find a text from his best friend.

Around 150 anti-immigration protesters gathered in Dresden to disrupt the unveiling of Manaf Halbouni‘s “Monument,” a public sculpture dedicated to the people of Aleppo. The sculpture, which consists of three upturned buses fastened together with wire, refers to a photograph of a barricade built on the streets of Aleppo in 2015. According to Christiane Mennicke-Schwarz, the artistic director of the Dresden Kunsthaus, the opening was disrupted by chants of “traitors” and “get lost.”

Sotheby’s filed a second lawsuit over the sale of a group of Old Master paintings that it believes to be forgeries. The auction house filed a lawsuit against art dealer Mark Weiss and collector David Kowitz in order to recover the profits of the 2011 private sale of “Portrait of a Man,” which Sotheby’s attributed to Frans Hals at the time. In a statement, Weiss said that he “intends to contest the claim vigorously.”

The Louvre Museum was reopened less than 24-hours after a man attacked a French soldier with a machete. An Egyptian Interior Ministry official identified the attacker as 28-year-old Abdullah Reda Refaie al-Hamahmy.

German prosecutors announced that a 36-year-old Tunisian man arrested on terrorism charges is also being held for his suspected involvement in the 2015 attack on the Bardo Museum in Tunis.

The Bombay High Court rejected Chintan Upadhyay‘s bail application. The artist stands accused of murdering his wife Hema and her lawyer Haresh Bhambani.

American hedge fund manager Tom Hill rejected a £30.7 million ($38.4 million) matching offer from London’s National Gallery for the purchase of Pontormo’s “Portrait of a Young Man in a Red Cap” (1530), a decision he attributes to the fall in the pound’s value. The UK government is likely to refuse a permanent export licence as a result. An export bar was placed on the work in 2015.

Hundreds of artists, dealers, critics, and curators signed an open letter opposing President Donald Trump’s executive order banning non-US citizens from seven Muslim-majority countries.

A report by Bloomberg identified Oprah Winfrey as the former owner of Gustav Klimt’s “Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer II” (1912). The work was privately sold to an Asian buyer last year for a reported $150 million. An unnamed source told Bloomberg that it was Winfrey who purchased the work at Christie’s for $87.9 million in 2006.

A book of Tahitian photographs taken by Jules Agostini is thought to contain images of Paul Gauguin and his mistress Pahura. Two albums of Agostini’s photographs — a friend of the artist — were sold at auction in July 2015, one of which was acquired by art dealer Daniel Blau.
