bobby stopped cleaning his gun to look up at sam, incredulity in his eyes as he was confident he did not hear him right. it wasn't often that there was a case that left bobby stumped and he'd needed a break from digging through his old books. cleaning his guns had always been his go to when he needed some time to think and his mind wouldn't quiet down enough to let him do it without his hands doing something. sure enough, sam's asked the question. there's a chance that he was somewhat serious -- or simply trying to break the silence and lighten the mood a little. the kid's always been sassy, sarcastic and at times, damn hard to read.

❝ i think it would just be whatever we identify it as. otherwise -- everything in the sky would be an fo. birds, airplanes, kites, bees. ❞ there was a hint of a smile on bobby's lips as he answered before turning his attention back to the gun in his hands. it was only then that he realized how lost he had thought he'd been. not a speck of dirt or gun powder to be seen. he found the spots that looked worn down and started to apply some gun oil to it. he's still at a loss of what the hunter that called him yesterday was chasing after, but sam's given him the perfect opportunity to give his mind a break and come back to it with a fresh mind in a little bit.

❝ any idea on where in the hell it's from? it doesn't look familiar. ❞ without knowing where to start, looking through his old book for some of these symbols would take more time than they had before more people died. leave it to them to stumble across yet another thing that a seasoned hunter didn't even know where to start with it. with all of his experience between hunting himself and helping countless other hunters out of tough spots, it was getting more frustrating to run into lapses in his knowledge. ❝ better yet, does your angel noggin understand anything it's sayin? ❞

❝ power company says its gonna be another god damn four hours, at least. leave it to rufus to not have a cheap generator for this place. ❞ the surly old man attitude was in part brought on by the fact that he didn't have his own home to go back to. calling his now dead, long-estranged friend's cabin home while he collected copies of all of his occult books had left little to be happy about. now, he and dean were surrounded by said books and enough candles to fuel a firefighter's worst nightmares in an attempt to get information about taking down the leviathan. bobby's eyes aren't what they used to be, especially with small fonts by the candlelight... and they still have jack squat about what they could use to make dick roman tick.

at least they had a landline, one that he'd rigged to take his cellphone calls as that had died hours ago. he pulled a cold beer out of the fridge on his way back to the small kitchen table, exasperation wearing both his patience and motivation thin. one glance at the book as he cracks open his new beer and he's resolved. he'll light up one of the burners and fix something to eat. ❝ when's the last time you ate, dean? think i've still got a can of chili. chef's specialty. ❞

providing comfort to dean wasn't an easy endeavor by any means. the elder winchester had shouldered the responsibility of keeping himself alive since his earliest memories... and anyone that knew john winchester knew that he wasn't the coddling dad type. dean's mistakes because he was a god damn kid that should have never been put in any of the situations he was in the first place were meant with discipline, not sympathy or understanding. all of those years ago, that was what bobby and john had a falling out about... which was something he lived to regret rather quickly. meant virtually no opportunities to give the boys moments to be normal kids.

they dynamic of protecting sam at all costs had bled into their adulthood when sam had joined in on the crusade against the yellow eyed demon after the death of his girlfriend. it was nice to see them together again, but tragedy came quickly. he watched the boys deal with their dad's death poorly and then watched dean completely crumble apart when that damned special child stabbed sam in the back right in front of them. bobby had been destroyed too, but he'd tried gentle coaxing and tough love to try and get dean through it, hoping to hell he could ensure he didn't lose both of them.

no surprise, nothing worked. dean snuck off and sold his soul for sam's life. got a shit deal too, because the crossroads demon knew how desperate he was. that was months ago and the three of them were no closer to getting a lead on saving him from it than when bobby had realized what happened when sam had shown up alive. he assumed whatever tiff he had missed between the two brothers had something to do with that. sam was nowhere in sight and dean had a bottle of whiskey in front of him. bobby placed one of the greasy bags from a local burger joint on the table in front of dean on his dusty table.

he grabbed a beer from the fridge and cracked it open, taking a seat across from dean. ❝ probably not a good idea to keep up the liquid diet. ❞ he has to ease into it if dean's going to be even a little bit forthcoming with what he's feeling.

❝ i ain't makin' no damn face. ❞ there definitely wasn't marked difference in his expression from before and after brooklyn said that. she must be imagining things. at least that would be the story that bobby was sticking to. in reality, he had a bad feeling about all of this. leave it to a winchester to get themselves sucked into something most hunters hadn't dealt with before. the world seemed to have a fucked up desire to keep one upping himself. every time he found out the world was much more twisted than he thought, something else happened to make it that much worse.

bobby had been scanning books for hours and was still coming up empty. his chair scuffed against the hardwood floor as he stood and swapped the book he had been pawing through for an older and dustier one. ❝ i need another beer -- and some potato sticks. you want anything? ❞

he was far too old to still be dealing with this shit, but he had always found resting difficult. it meant that he was going to be left alone with his thoughts, which he had tried to avoid since his early childhood. either way, he wouldn't fully be happy so he chose to be someone that helped other people. ❝ an' i'm supposed to just take your word for it, boy? hate to break it to ya but i ain't that gullible. give me one good reason to trust you. ❞ bobby didn't trust anyone, even those he knew for a long time. at least not until he tested them a few different ways first. paranoia was a major side effect of doing this for so long, of being fucked over by humans and monsters alike his entire life.

❝  i'd watch who you're talking to like that bobby. ❞ john seethed. he knew that he hasn't been doing the best for the boys but he tried his damndest. he needed them to be able to protect themselves from monsters, because he hadn't been able to protect mary from them. he needed to follow leads on the demon that had killed mary and save other families from the destruction in his own in the process. whenever they passed through, he tried to drop off the boys at bobby's or pastor jim's to have a more stable few weeks than being left in motel rooms with enough food and money to eke by. ❝  i don't need to drop the boys off here if you're going to scream in my face when i get back. ❞

he was no longer surprised by winchester antics, particularly the rudeness. it wasn't uncommon in the hunting community and bobby had been rather used to harsh words his entire life. somehow, it never seemed to get easier, and his temper flared as easily as it ever had. with negan, though, bobby had learned that returned anger only seemed to amuse him or make him damn near homicidal. his general rule was to not aid in the revenge warpath either of the winchester twins had set themselves on.

❝  you know what, bite me rufus! i'm trying to help you out here! ❞ they had always had a bit of a friendly banter to their relationship, but while they had somewhat reconnected because of his help with the winchesters, there was always a bit of malice to his words against bobby. he would never stop feeling sorry about what had happened between them in the first place, but at the end of the day the vetala had killed his daughter... not bobby. and he had needed to come to terms with that to fully move on. ❝  ya might want to find somewhere else to bury your bodies. ❞
