The words just rolled off her lips: my dear, sweetie, darling. All apt descriptions, if she did say so herself. So what if each time, Vi would stutter and stare and flush so deeply that her cheeks matched her hair? It made Caitlyn’s stomach turn into a warm pit, and she needed just the right word to get the most consistent effect from her girlfriend. Luckily, she was a woman of science, and this experiment is very humane. And although Vi may complain, she definitely would not protest. Caitlyn was sure of it.

sometimes i think about girlfriend in her interactions with people who have regular names and like. my gf is trans. i really think she could've spent her whole life thinking mommy mearest/daddy dearest were actually named their parental titles so when she renamed herself she took after what she genuinely thought the family naming conventions were. maybe her full name is daughter girlfriend dearest.

Chapter Twelve: De-escalation

“I didn’t even want to come and see you. I wanted to talk to Shiva. I thought you’d be able to talk to her for me,” Willis explained, “Let me out of the car, so I can—.” Alan raised a finger to quiet Willis down. 

“Okay… Say you kill Mark and Mommy Dearest, right? What happens when you get caught and go to jail? Best case scenario is Melissa getting him after he’s in the system for a few hours, maybe a few weeks. Worst case scenario, they place him with a trafficker or a serial killer or maybe some kind of pedophile—.”

“Alan—.”

“No, you shut up and listen to me. Worst case, right? Maybe he turns bad. Maybe he can’t handle the shitty hand you dealt him. Maybe he turns to drugs and alcohol. Maybe he becomes a killer. Or some kind of freak. Maybe he just snaps and doesn’t make it to adulthood… They say they won’t release you to go to his funeral. And it’s your fault… 

“Another scenario: You fail. Ma and Mark fucking kill you and bury you where they buried your girlfriend and her unborn child. Your son will never know what happened because Melissa will be too afraid to tell him. Rightfully so. Unless they kill him just for fun. Mark loves killing little children. He says the cries make him laugh. Either way, your kid grows up without a father because you’re too stupid to get away with it,” Alan replied.

Willis lay back in his chair. “Why do you care what happens to me or my son?” Willis replied. 

“When you kill somebody for the first time, something in you dies. You don’t get it back even if what you did was justified. And trust me, I want Ma and Mark gone as much as you do. Best case scenario, you do get away with it, but you’re never right again… And it ruins your relationship with Jason forever. I might be a killer… I might not be. I won’t say yes or no… But I will tell you one thing, Billy. What’s been done to you makes me sick to my stomach, and I’ll be damned if I watch you throw your life away and become like them,” Alan explained. His eyes softened as he looked at Willis. “I beat the crap out of you a couple of times. I scared you. I called you names… But have I ever lied to you?”

The question made Willis feel five years old again. His bottom lip quivered as he turned to look out the window, and Alan grabbed his face with a single hand. “Look at me. Have I ever lied to you?” Alan asked. Willis shook his head. “I’ll handle Ma and Mark. I didn’t protect you twice. There won’t be a third time. Besides… Ma can’t do anything to me,” Alan paused and a smile broke through his mostly unemotional gaze and there was a sweetness in his tone. “I know where the bodies are buried… And they can’t move them all.” 

Willis leaned forward, his face in his hands as he burst into tears. “My kid… I left him at the hospital,” Willis wept. Alan nodded and started driving toward the hospital without another word.

Willis looked at Alan, watching and waiting for Alan to say something. “Come in with me,” Willis requested. 

“Is Dad in there?” Alan asked. Willis chewed his lip. “Tell him I’m outside. If he doesn’t wanna see me, I’ll leave. If he doesn’t mind me being here, I’ll come in with you.”

Jason wandered outside without a jacket to smoke a cigarette. Alan laughed. “That one’s yours. Isn’t he?” Alan asked. 

“Jesus Christ… That’s Jason,” Willis whispered as he rushed over, taking off his jacket to cover Jason up. “Come on. Let’s get you somewhere warm. Are you nuts? Where’s Lissy and Gramps?” 

Jason blinked hard. “Sleep… I wanted a cigarette,” Jason whispered. Willis picked Jason up, and Jason winced. 

“I’m sorry, Pete. I had a bad day, and I should’ve been by your side. I was so mad I forgot what was most important. I should’ve stayed with you instead of spending the whole day trying to get into trouble. I’m so sorry,” Willis apologized. He kissed Jason’s temple. “Come on, let’s see your Uncle Alan in the car. Let’s sit with him.” 

Willis set Jason down and they got in the car together. Alan turned around and shook Jason’s hand. Alan smiled. “Wow, you’re his—. I—. Seeing you up close is crazy. Billy, if you mess this up—.” It was the first time Willis ever saw Alan at a loss for words. And emotional. “Gosh doggonit.” Alan turned away as tears welled up in his eyes. 

“Do you want a cigarette?” Jason asked. Willis rubbed the back of Jason’s head. 

“He has a concussion,” Willis whispered. 

Alan turned around. “Yeah, I’ll take a cigarette. Whaddaya got?” Alan asked. 

“Winston blues,” Jason replied. 

Alan grinned as he took a cigarette. “You got a light, little fella?” Alan questioned. Jason took Alan’s cigarette and held it to his. Alan glanced at Willis, who shrugged. “I’m trying to quit, but I can never say no to a free cigarette.” Alan held the cigarette between his lips while he texted Melissa to let her know he had Jason and Willis out front. 

“Yeah… I’m gonna try to quit, too. Figured I’d stop after I finish this pack,” Jason confessed. Willis smiled. 

“Willis? Shiva?” Alan asked, trying to be discreet in front of Jason. Willis shook his head. “You sure?” 

“Yes, I’m sure,” Willis replied as he pulled a picture out of his wallet and gave it to Alan. He looked at it and compared it to Jason. 

Jason’s head drooped forward, and Alan took his cigarette. “If you were gonna have kids, you should’ve had more than just one. Doesn’t he get lonesome?” Alan asked. 

Willis squinted at him. “Why do you care?” Willis questioned in reply. 

“You don’t think I wanted kids? I knew I had to spare any kid I would’ve had the messed up life we did. So, I didn’t have any… I couldn’t give them anything better than what we had… And I never could tell you I was sorry for hurting you all the time,” Alan looked away. “I’ve done some horrible things in my life, Willis… And that last time we saw each other… I’m so sorry about everything.” 

Melissa ran outside, combing a hand through her hair as she leaned in Alan’s passenger window. Alan blew smoke out of his window, removing his cigarettes before holding a finger to his lips. “He’s sleeping,” Alan replied. 

“Let me in the car,” Melissa giggled as she rubbed her forearms to stay warm. Melissa got in the car and rolled the window up before hugging Alan. Alan tensed before wrapping his arms around her. 

She kissed his cheek. “Aww, come on. Cut that out, Lissy.” He pinched her cheek. 

“Why do you have two cigarettes?” Melissa asked. 

“Jason fell asleep,” Alan answered. Melissa turned around and shot Willis a look, and he turned to look out the window. “He’s quitting anyway… Come on, you’re acting like you never experimented. Remember in seventy-seven when you had that bad—.” 

Melissa cleared her throat. “I remember that,” Willis laughed, “We fingerpainted to In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida and you told me God was in the music… I just thought you were being cool.” 

“See what you started, Al?” Melissa replied. Alan held back a laugh. “Billy, it was one time. I dropped acid one time.”

“That’s a lie,” Alan chuckled. 

“And how do you know that?” Melissa asked. 

Alan put one of the cigarettes out in the ashtray. “Gay bar in eighty-four,” Alan replied. 

“What were you doing in a gay bar?” Willis asked. 

“Billy,” Alan replied. Willis’ eyes widened. “This little family reunion has been cool and all, but Dad’s probably gonna tell me to leave if he—. Shit.”

Pete made his way over and knocked on the window. “Alan?” Pete questioned. Melissa rolled the window down and smiled. 

“Hey there, Dad… I was just bringing Billy back. I don’t wanna—.”

“Get out of the car. I wanna talk to you alone for a minute,” Pete interrupted.
