In keeping with the rice theme of the past few days, here is some amazing calligraphy from a poster at the rice store! The characters on the top left read 新之助 Shinnosuke, which is a given name for boys. I love the loops, guys! I love the loops!
The suffix ~(之)助 -(no)suke is common in Edo-era names, but I've mostly seen it today in a jokey or nicknamey way. In this case, however, it's actually a stage name; the kid is a kabuki actor! According to the small text next to his head, he is known as 八代目 市川 新之助 Ichikawa Shinnosuke the 8th.
~代目 [だいめ] is a counter for generations. Kabuki stage names are passed down generationally, usually from the actor's father, grandfather, or teacher.
新 means new. Its read あたら.しい, あら.た, あら-, にい-, or シン.
之 is used mainly in proper nouns these days. In classical Japanese, it could mean “this,” or serve as the particle の (apostrophe+s) or “of.” It's read の, これ, ゆく, この, or シ.
means help, assist/assistant, or rescue. It's read たす.かる, たす.ける, す.ける, すけ, or ジョ.
I went down a mini rabbit hole and learned that this actor's first appearance on stage was at the age of 2 years and 8 months! That was under his real name, 堀越 勸玄 Horigoshi Kangen (let it be said: this family has style!). He was supposed to make his official debut and succeed the name in 2020, but it was delayed until 2022 because of the pandemic. He just turned 11 this March. You can watch this commercial here—it's cute!

Kanji of the day: 代
代 - Substitute, change, convert, replace, period, age, counter for decades of ages, eras, etc., generation, charge, rate, fee
Kun: か.わる、かわ.る、かわ.り、か.わり、-がわ.り、-が.わり、か.える、よ、しろ On: ダイ、タイ (Pinyin: dài | dai4 )
Pictophonetic: 弋 represented the sound (pinyin yì | yi4), 亻/人 (person) represents the meaning
(The phonetic compound is barely noticable anymore due to historical phonetic changes in Chinese.)
Originally this kanji only meant "to substitute", but it was further abstracted to refer to ages and generations (as in one generation "replacing" another) and is now commonly used as an indefinite generational counter (a person in their 30's = 30代, a person born in the 1960s = 60年代 )
Strokes: 5 Radical: 人 human

Different brow shapes in historic China. Which one do you like most?
(My favourite is the Moon curved brows and the Moth brows, although the Osmanthus leaf brow is what I picture when I think of the Tang Dynasty.)

Back today with a solid jōyō kanji name! The surname 宮代 is read Miyashiro, Miyadai, or maybe Miyayo (although that seems rare).
宮 is read みや, キュウ, グウ, ク, or クウ. It means Shinto shrine, constellation, palace, or princess.
代 is read か.わる/かわ.る, -がわ.り/-が.わり, か.える, よ, しろ, ダイ, or タイ. In addition to all those readings, it also has a variety of meanings. First is substitute, change, convert, or replace. Second is charge/fee or rate; these two meanings are sort of related, if you think of cost as converting money into goods or services. Third, it can mean period/age. This is why it’s also the counter for generations (for example, people in their 30s are 三十代 [さんじゅうだい]).
