Plot: At Tenikai General Hospital, Takao Ameku runs the Investigative Pathology department, with a keen eye and knowledge to crack the mysterious cases other doctors or even detectives can't explain.

Length: 12 episodes

Thoughts: (psyching myself up) Don't do "Hausu MD" jokes, don't do "Hausu MD" jokes, don't do "Hausu MD" jokes. RIGHT. I think I can do this.

So, within the first 90 seconds we have a kid with a strange disease no other doctor could identify, and someone is suggesting it might be Lupus. Kinda surprised we didn't have a painting of a cat with a cane calling himself Hausu M.D. and... FUCK. Well, look, they knew what they were doing, ok? While the "genius doctor lacking bedside manner diagnoses very hard cases" is very much the grumpy doctor played by Hugh Laurie, the rest of the show along the medical practice side of things also focuses on the forensics - she's a doctor detective, after all. As a fan of the show, picking this up was a no-brainer.

However, around halfway, my enthusiasm started to go a bit thin - of the first six episodes, five were dedicated to multi-episode stories, only the first being interesting. The cursed video episode was fun but a bit obvious, and the tomb curse... a bit of a dud. I generally don't like when more episodic shows that don't follow a plot abuse the multi-episode stories unless it's for a mid-season shift or the finale and this soured me on what should have been a slam dunk for this season, with a medical mystery gremlin who's not above taking advantage of her petite size to dress as a schoolgirl to infiltrate areas of the hospital she's not allowed in, which becomes a plot point in a good episode where she's in risk of losing her department as one of the patients from the first episode comes back with a lawsuit (not the guy with blue blood, that would be weird) over allegedly missing a diagnosis. I think it also fails to keep a consistent tone throughout the episodes, in one moment the aforementioned dressing in a sailor suit and trying to infiltrate a place she's not supposed to be in or going all out motorcycle into a barn fire action stuff, and then doing more dramatic stuff like the angel story, with consistent pace also seems a problem, feels like it's constantly rushing through parts of a plot. Speaking of consistency, while the show always had a somewhat janky feel, one of the last episodes seemed visually way off to me, in a very 70s "we chose to ignore character sheets and human proportions" way of fucking up and knew I couldn't be the only one.

As it is a show I was watching and writing a couple more sentences after each episode every week, maybe the multi-episode story format suits it better for binge watching - it started with a double episode, after all. If I ignored all other shortcomings and felt the show could be improved by that, one day I could return to it and put that to test, but probably won't be with the live action adaptation, although if in one hand having a longer runtime per episode could help, on the other hand, the mysteries in general aren't that interesting, and it might be beaten in production values by a JAV spoof. Who knows.

Recommended to: You want to see House as a cute young anime woman, even if it's better to just watch House M.D. reruns? Hey, it's your life. Want to see a medical mystery in anime form? Apothecary Diaries is on and there's still Black Jack.

Too reliant on multiple episode stories, surely not made for the 23 minute format.
