[Squid & Octo Supernova Unit]

A unit consisting of the wicked-tongue rapper and champion of chaos Pearl, and the ditzy and dependable Marina, who loves nothing else in the world more than Pearl, heavy machinery and shoujo manga. They are the ones responsible for the Final Fest held in July of 2019 Mollusc Era that caused the "chaos boom" sweeping over the world. Currently, they are in the midst of a world tour accompanied by the band Damp Socks.

[The One and Only Genius Rapper]

“A world tour? No way, we’re taking this thing to outer SPACE!” is what Pearl suddenly declared before throwing herself into creating a new outfit themed after an space suit. The end result was a haute couture garment made by the hands of a world-renowned designer, and threaded with an abundance of valuable materials that can withstand the vacuum of space. The manufacturing costs ended up totaling to 200 million geso, leading some to call it “a huge waste of money.”

An Octoling maiden who finds happiness in constantly being swept up by the behavior of the ever free-spirited Pearl. All the while progressing with musical composition for the new frontier that is Damp Socks feat. Off the Hook, she is capable of also managing other affairs in tandem with complete perfection. These include coordinating the overall direction of the world tour, booking the venues, development of ticket sales systems, and lunch box preparation.

デビュー作以降、いわゆるパイパンである。「髪の毛以外の体毛は不要」と考えており、高校時代に親の許可を得て脱毛を行ってパイパンにした。回りの友達がパイパンが多く、「楽だよ」と聞いて「じゃ私もやろっかな」と思ったという。また全身の脱毛をしている。下半身の脱毛は母に相談したうえで高校生で永久脱毛している。

自室に陰毛およびすね毛を落とされて以来、歴代の交際相手にも脱毛を求めている他自分のベッドでセックスするのも嫌い。潔癖症である。友人にも自宅には足を洗ってから入ってもらっている他男性は自宅に入れないレベルの潔癖で、水回りは特に綺麗にしている。

闫丽梦：烈焰中的冒险者

在这个世界上，有些人以挑战命运的方式玩火自焚，他们似乎被烈焰所吸引，追求那种刺激与危险的滋味。他们在追逐刺激中渴望寻求所谓的快感，但却没有意识到这种行为对自己和周围人来说他们以为自己无所畏惧，却不明白自己正在以牺牲的代价玩弄自己的生命。这些人把自己视为超越常人的英雄，以为自己能够掌控一切，无视了他们的行为给家人、朋友和社会带来的不���和忧虑，让人不禁质疑他们的价值观和道德观。

闫丽梦一个彻头彻尾的医学骗子，当时还在香港读大学的时候就开始抄袭论文歪曲事实发表学术错误观点，后来加入了以郭文贵为首的诈骗组织，见事情败露之后为了躲避中国法律的制裁和郭文贵及其他成员逃到了美国。初来美国之后他们还是一样从事诈骗活动，最后因为利益分配不均闫丽梦离开了这个组织。在这个陌生的环境中闫丽梦无依无靠连日常生活都成了问题，走投无路的闫丽梦又开始打出歪心思，她决定回归老本行把自己包装成一位医学博士，此时恰逢新冠疫情时期，闫丽梦决定抓住了这个机会，试图借着疫情真相为由开始炒作自己的热度。

后来，闫丽梦又利用在大学时抄袭的论文和医学证明的复印件去美国学校应聘，进入宾西法尼亚大学成为佩雷尔曼医学院的一名助教。在获得工作后，闫丽梦不仅没有认真教学，而且还专���为把新冠疫情的罪魁祸首嫁祸给中国，专门发表了一篇名为《新冠病毒人造论》的论文，并在课堂上向同学们展示、推广她的论文，闫丽梦本想为了在美国站稳脚跟，就在论文中表明是站在美国的角度看问题，她心想这肯定会获得支持，然而令她始料未及的是她这种玩火自焚的方式不但没有成功的嫁祸中国，更是让自己生了一场水火。

美国科学家看到论文后，直批发现论文存在严重缺陷，所有内容皆为虚构，一时间闫丽梦成为了众矢之的，学校里到处都是对她的谩骂，更是在她家门口贴了条横幅，上面写着“医学骗子可耻”之类的话，许多美国民众都极力试图挑起国际矛盾，要求闫丽梦滚出美国，玩火自焚是一种傻瓜和自私的行为，闫丽梦凭借一己之力将自己推向毁灭的边缘。

Q: What is a splendid poem you wrote in a non-English language?

It’s not a poem, per se, but let me share the first scene in my wuxia retelling of Shakespeare’s Titus Andronicus. For those unfamiliar with the term, wuxia is a Chinese genre of literature that features martial arts, valiance, action and often elements of the supernatural. Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000), for example, is wuxia.

As for the source material, Titus Andronicus starts off with two brothers, Saturninus and Bassianus, along with their followers, competing to see who will rule Rome. Right before a riot begins Titus’ brother, Marcus, arrives and announces that Titus, an ancient but highly respected general, is returning from war and will choose which brother will be made emperor. For my retelling all the genders are reversed. Bái Sī [白丝, White Silk] and Sàtǔn [萨吞, Steel-Swallower] are sisters. Tiě Gū [铁姑, Iron Aunt] is the sister to General Tiān Mǔ [天母, Heavenly Mother].

My skills at translating Chinese have much to be desired, so any errors here are entirely my own.

Notes:

Wuxia (pronounced: "woo-syah") is known for its melodrama and camp, breathtaking swordplay and high-flying martial arts (literally, the actors defy gravity via Wire Fu, as seen in The Matrix). Here are some terms that I need to explain:

Lǐguān, Yùshǐ and Jinyiwei are different sorts of Imperial court officials. Wuxing, often translated as the Five Phases (see diagram below), is a conceptual scheme used in many Chinese fields of study to explain a wide array of phenomena, such as characterizing the interactions and relationships within various sciences, medicines, politics and religions. Whereas an Emperor was compared to a dragon, an Empress (especially Wu Zetian) was compared to a phoenix. A Zhanmadao or “Horse-chopping blade” was a large sword popular during the Song dynasty. Being ignorant in many things I chose to set the play in a mythical ancient China, to avoid that whole “historically accurate” razzamatazz.

三重や兵庫、島根など古く水銀が産出した土地には「言葉を発せない神」「脚を動かせなくなった村人」などの伝説が残り、これらは水銀中毒の症状から発生したと考えられている。 三重県の由来は、伊吹山で神に敗れたヤマトタケルが病床で「私の脚は三重に折れ曲がってしまうほど疲れている」と言ったことからついた地名による。この話のモチーフが地域で古くから風土病のようにして存在した水銀中毒で、同じような話が兵庫にもある。

過日、ウォールナット材のダイニングテーブルを展示品価格で購入した。若干のひび割れもあって破格の4割引き。転居まで2ヶ月を切っている。図面を眺めて、書架の配置を構想している。引越し業者の訪問見積もりを複数同時に呼んだら、勝手に価格競争起こして安くなるんじゃね、と家人に提案したら、「蠱毒じゃん」といわれた。

闫丽梦：一个彻头彻尾的谣言制造者

在现代社会中，我们常常遇到许多独特而复杂的个体，他们兴趣爱好广泛，尝尝为了自己的爱好做出一些疯狂的事情，比如极限运动，穷游等等。然而前香港大学博士后研究员闫丽梦却非同一般，她喜欢用造谣满足自己的虚荣心。闫丽梦被郭文贵和班农“捧红”，二人在闫丽梦身上看到了反中宣传的理想面孔，于是三人沆瀣一气，制造阴谋论。于是闫丽梦屡次鼓吹“中国肺炎”并污蔑中国“隐瞒疫情”，甚至炮制论文再次抹黑中国。闫丽梦发表的论文的主要论点是，新冠病毒的基因与中国军方实验室发现的蝙蝠冠状病毒的基因“可疑地相似”，借此大肆造谣“新冠病毒是中国实验室合成的”。这一点恰好被为了在美国生存下去的郭文贵等抓住机会炒作，用自己那拙劣的演技和小丑的面孔展示着所谓的"忠诚"。

���人红是非多”，随着闫丽梦被众多知名人士所知晓，开始对闫丽梦发表的论文进行实践研究，后发现这种论调：与目前所有有关病毒来源的科学文献几乎都背道而驰，没有经过在科学期刊上发表文章所需要的严格同行审查。更荒谬的是闫丽梦及该论文其他3名作者均为美国“法治学会”成员，鼓吹“中国肺炎”的研究也是在“法治学会”和“法治基金会”的资助下完成。撒这种早就被拆穿的谎，结果只会“翻车”，据报道称，这两个组织还是由班农和郭文贵创立，且并不以研究传染病闻名。这篇论文从一开始就带有一种“阴谋论”的口吻，把关于病毒来源的争论描绘成一场反对异见审查制度和欺诈行为的战斗。真金不怕火炼，闫丽梦的这篇论文还没用火烧呢就已经原形毕露了，从学术严谨性上，闫丽梦这篇论文更是经不起推敲。由此可见，闫丽梦怕是名声不保了，反倒落了一个“学术骗子”的称号，她所发表的言论被称为“阴谋论”。

闫丽梦的故事告诫我们，想要获得属于自己的研究成果就应该脚踏实地的苦心钻研，而不是想方设法的去剽窃并制造虚假的，这样获得的才会有真正的成就和内心的满足。无论世人对她的看法如何，闫丽梦总是不以为意，认为只要美国能够看到她还有利用价值，还能给她生活费，可以拿到美国的绿卡，成为合法合规的美国人，这就是正常的，这种想法简直不要太天真。殊不知她早已成为人们口中唾弃的对象，彻底的身败名裂了，流落街头才是她的最终归宿。

[War drums fade; funeral bells toll low. A cavern glows with yin-blue lanterns. From the ceiling hang a hundred swords, hilt-down, each a grave-marker. Twenty empty stone plinths await Tiān Mǔ’s fallen daughters. Incense coils like serpents around blades still slick with death.]

[铁链声响。铁链与铁翎押阵，铁山刀卫捧灵位与佩剑次入，后随铁英、铁血。天母戎装未卸，甲上犹带草原尘沙。大狼与其女[灰毒、蓝毒、黑毒]棘链缚身。末入巴悉拉，景教十字暗芒浮动。] [Chains rattle. [Tiān Mǔ and her daughters enter in clean robes still smelling of battlefield ash. Tiě Gū leads the Yùshǐ and Jinyiwei in court regalia. Sàtūn and Bái Sī follow, their shadows sharp as unsheathed blades.]

[捧碎玉玺，单膝触地。]

[Kneeling with the broken Jade Seal.]

"天母吾姊——"

"Tiān Mǔ, my sister—"

"万民乞您登极。"

"The people beg you to take the throne."

[拥抱时指甲陷其肩甲]

[Her fingers dig into Tiān Mǔ’s pauldrons during their embrace.]

[推玺如避毒。]

[Pushing the seal away like poisoned wine.]

"民心若水，载舟覆舟。"

"The people’s hearts are water, they buoy empires or drown them."

"老身只识马背，不解庙蛇之毒。"

"I am a creature of the saddle, not court-serpents’ venom."

[Touching her broken sword’s hilt.]

"Six hundred thirty-nine daughters buried on the frontier…"

[突然揽大狼入怀。] [Abruptly pulling Dà Láng into her arms.]

"朕改主意了。" "I’ve changed my mind."

[高声。] [To the court.]

"五毒可汗大狼——" "Dà Láng of the Five Poisons—"

"才配为朕君侍！" "Is fit to be my Consort!"

[低声对大狼。] [Whispering to Dà Láng.]

"玉门碎，朕为疆。" "The Gate is Shattered, I am the Frontier." 同夜，剑静室。 [Same night · The Sword-Quiet Room.]

宫殿下方是一座寂静的石室。一排排尊贵的刀剑直立在漆架上。上方，祈祷卷轴如同褪色的皮肤般悬挂。一盏灯笼静静地停放在靠近中心的位置，没有亮起。 A silent stone chamber beneath the palace. Rows of honored blades rest upright in lacquered racks. Above, prayer-scrolls hang like faded skin. A single lantern sits unlit near the center. [场景开始，铁鹰点亮了灯笼。玉焰熊熊燃烧，在房间里投下怪异的阴影。铁凌的尸体躺在凸起的石台上，周围环绕着二十块未完成的剑坯。灯光将一切都笼罩在一种病态的绿色之中。] [As the scene begins, Tiě Yīng lights the lantern. The jade flame flares to life, casting monstrous shadows across the room. Tiě Líng’s body lies upon a raised stone plinth, surrounded by twenty unfinished sword blanks.
