모란꽃을 좋아합니다. 서양에서는 장미를 꽃의 여왕이라고 하지만 동양에서는 모란을 꽃의 여제라고 하여 칭송했다고 합니다. 작약이라고도 하는 모란은 보면 볼수록 아름답습니다. 중국에서는 "모단(牡丹, mǔdān)"이라고 부르며, 한국에서는 "목단" 또는 "화중왕(花中王)"이라고 한다는군요.

The peony is native to Eurasia and western North America (news to me) according to Wikipedia. They’re long lived perennials sometimes shrubs, mine are herbaceous so, not a shrub. In China peonies were used to flavor food and they’ve been ornamental plants since ancient times. They’re also used as medicine in China, Korea, and Japan. Petals of some peonies are used to make candy, infusions “tea”, and an addition to salads and drinks. Native Americans used American peonies as medicine as well, they made a “tea” to treat lung problems. The root was also food and to treat respiratory ailments, nausea, and STIs.

There are three main growth habits.

Herbaceous like mine,

tree, which are deciduous shrubs

Itoh, a man made hybrid of the two.

There are 7 different types of flowers.

Single, Japanese, anemone, triple, semi double, bomb, and double.

Peony are a traditional symbol of China, specifically paeonia x suffrageticosa, a man made hybrid.
