Sangaku Saturday #4

In the previous info post, we went over the debate on the religious aspect of sangaku, and the fact that the absence of prayers on these tablets was more puzzling to some than the mathematics. As such, the tablets are not ema prayer tablets, but donations, which usually don't feature prayers on them. Case in point, some consecrated sake and French wine seen at Meiji-jingû in 2016.

Beyond wishing for good fortune and health, such donations serve two very worldly purposes: to contribute to the life and prestige of the shrine or temple (having a famous contributor makes the shrine famous by association), and to advertise the donor in return, as their name is on display. See this large torii at Fushimi Inari Taisha paid for by TV Asahi (テレビ朝日).

With that in mind, Meijizen's cynical comment from 1673 that sangaku aim "to celebrate the mathematical genius of their authors" may not far from the truth. The authors of sangaku are looking to gain notoriety through the publicity that the shrine or temple provides. But was the bemused Meijizen the target audience?

More on that in a couple of weeks. Below the cut is the solution to last week's problem.

The solution to the first problem (below the cut in this post) is the key. Name K, L and M the intersections of the three circles with the horizontal line. Then, by using that previous result,

This gives us the means to construct this figure on paper using a compass and a marked ruler. Having chosen two radii p and q and constructed the two large circles (remember that AB=p+q) and a line tangent to both, placing M and C is done after calculating the lengths IK=CM=r and IC=KM=2*sqrt(pr).

祭神 熊鷹大神

熊鷹大神とは 、日本書紀にある 神功皇后に 征伐された 甘木朝倉の豪族 『羽白熊鷲』 だと思われます。 神功皇后が 羽白熊鷹を退治した所の 福岡県筑穂町の 老松神社の 宮司さんによると、鷲 ではなくて 羽白熊鷹 と 伝わっていると、仰ってますから、同一人物 だと 思われます。　世に憚って、鷲を鷹と言い換えたのかもしれません。出典：伊那の谷から古代が見える>稲荷 と 熊鷹大神 と 羽白熊鷲 と　https://utukusinom.exblog.jp/10199375/

千本鳥居をゆく

2017年、東伏見稲荷神社。

社殿裏にある千本鳥居。参拝路がまるで迷路のように入り組んでいる。

帰省途中に京都で一泊して夏の京都。 6/29: 伏見稲荷大社→石清水八幡宮 6/30: 八坂神社→知恩院→平安神宮→東山慈照寺(銀閣寺)→南禅寺→妙心寺 最強厄払い２トップ(石清水八幡宮と八坂神社）で茅の輪をくぐって夏越の大祓を請けたので今年後半は安心です。

JR奈良線伏見駅ランプ小屋　旧東海道本線

稲荷駅の外に残っている、旧東海道本線のランプ小屋。名前の通り、昔鉄道の保線や客車用に使うランプと、その燃料を保管していた倉庫です。

今でこそ奈良線の駅である稲荷駅ですが、その歴史は古く、最初は日本最初の路線である東海道本線の駅として開業しました。

日本最初の路線、といっても東京から神戸まで一気に開通したわけではなく、部分部分に少しずつ工事を進め、できあがったところから開業、といった具合で、最初は新橋〜横浜間が開業。その次は神戸〜大阪間、そして大阪〜京都、京都〜大津(現在とは場所が違う)の開業の時に稲荷駅も作られました。

こんな感じで部分部分にそれぞれ延伸していったため、東海道本線の中では静岡辺りの開業が遅めだったようです。

あと全通前は、今のように琵琶湖の南に沿ったルートではなく、琵琶湖はなんと長浜で一旦船に乗り換えて、大津まで船で横断するというスタイル。東京、名古屋方面から大阪に鉄道で向かおうとすると、長浜〜大津間でもれなく船旅がついてきました。

その後滋賀の辺りも鉄道が敷かれて、同時に琵琶湖横断ルートは廃止に。鉄道のみで東京〜神戸間は繋がりました。

明治期の東海道本線のルートは結構現在のルートと変わっていて、この稲荷駅を通るルートも然り、あとは関ヶ原から米原辺りのルートも結構今とは違っています。

線路を敷設した当時の技術ではそのルートでしかいけなかったけれど、後に技術が向上してもっと短いルートで敷設できるようになったり、逆に勾配を避けるために別ルートに付け替えたり。ルートひとつとっても色々な背景が見えてきて、ドラマよなぁ…！と思います。いや、興味ない人には全く惹かれない話なんでしょうけども。このランプ小屋を眺めながら一人で近代化のドラマを感じていました。付き合わせた友人すまん。

Hanazura Inari Shrine: A Stunning Shrine on the Cliffside 鼻顔稲荷神社：断崖に立つ絶景の稲荷神社

Hanazura Inari Shrine in Saku City, Nagano Prefecture, is famous for its brilliant red shrine building perched on the cliffs of the Yukawa River. The shrine’s unique architectural style, known as “kengai-zukuri,” is reminiscent of Kyoto’s famous Kiyomizu-dera, offering visitors a breathtaking view.

Founded during the Eiroku era (16th century), the shrine enshrines a spirit from Fushimi Inari Taisha in Kyoto. Its main deity, Ukanomitama-no-Mikoto, is believed to bless people with prosperity in business, family safety, and academic success.

The grounds also feature charming sights such as a “hugging fox” statue, symbolizing child-rearing, and the “paired trees,” known for bringing good luck in love. In February, the shrine hosts the lively “Hatsu-uma Festival,” where visitors enjoy a traditional Daruma fair and sacred fire rituals.

It’s about a 20-minute walk from Iwamurada Station. Don’t miss the beautiful cherry blossoms in spring or autumn foliage.

長野県佐久市にある鼻顔（はなづら）稲荷神社は、湯川の断崖に建つ朱塗りの社殿で知られています。まるで京都の清水寺を彷彿とさせる「懸崖造り（けんがいづくり）」の美しい神社で、訪れる人々に強い印象を残します。

この神社は永禄年間（16世紀）に創建され、京都・伏見稲荷大社の分霊を祀っています。主祭神は宇迦之御魂命（うかのみたまのみこと）で、商売繁盛、家内安全、学業成就などのご利益があるとされています。

境内には子育ての象徴とされる抱き狐像や、縁結びのご利益がある「相生の樹」など、見どころも豊富です。2月には「初午祭（はつうまさい）」が行われ、だるま市や奉焼祭が多くの人でにぎわいます。

アクセスはJR岩村田駅から徒歩20分ほど。紅葉や桜の季節もおすすめです。
